We did takeout yesterday and it was exceptional. Crispy vegetable spring rolls, Hot and sour soup, Chicken in black bean sauce, veges with hot sauce and vegetable fried rice. All delicious! The Mandarin never fails to impress us. Thank you very much. Frances and Bill
I have been going to this restaurant for more than 30 years and today was the straw that broke my back. The deception, whether it be malicious or inadvertent, truly reflects the mandate of this restaurant. Prices fluctuate at a whim and are not transparent to the patrons. We did ask the server for the prices for sticky rice and declined as it was a “special price”. We were given an “old”menu at the table and upon cashing out, we realized that other items on a new menu were designated as “special prices “. Although a dim sum portion of roast duck was 15.95, a tiny squid salad, and fried squid were 11.95 each and the dim sum kimchi (all of these are served in tiny bowls) was 8.95. Making informed choices should not require you to ask the price for every single item, especially if are given an old menu. We asked to speak with the manager, and he avoided us as he walked by our table numerous times. It was only when we insisted to speak with him, did he stop. He told us he doesn’t care and welcomes us to write a review and he cannot help us in any way. The old menu merely have the items unavailable to us now. Totally false as the new menus had a disclaimer as to what are “specially priced items”. He was rude, unwilling to speak with us, and impatient despite completely aware and acknowledges that we have been there many times. There is no predictability in prices and his disinterest in what we had to say is indicative of potential lapses in the cleanliness of bathrooms, food preparation; service and the grocery store next door. Don’t dare me to write a review, because, against my nature, I will do so.
All this to say, i was frustrated to think that this type of service, deception and disregard for customers exists. I work in the industry and I totally enjoy the hospitality of so many excellent restaurants in this region, but this is the first time that I have had the inclination to call a sub par one out.
Visited in February 2023: This restaurant used to be our go-to place for dim sum, but I think quality has gone down a bit over the years. All shrimp dim sum tasted good if you do like shrimp, the rest was just okay. I think this restaurant needs a deep cleaning to fresh up the look.
Don’t eat here unless you want to feel sick immediately after. I’m not sure if it’s old food or too much MSG but you will need the bathroom within 30 mins & feel nauseous. This place really fell off.
The dim sum tastes very good, especially the BBQ pork rice noodles. The rice noodles are very thin and BBQ pork is fresh (plus there's good qty of it inside the rice noodles). The shrimp dumplings are also good (wraps also thin). I emphasized on "thin" because that's how "real" dim sum should be. $85 tx incl for 2, plus tip. (One suggestion: to include tea for free in the meal.to make the meal a bit less pricey)
Ordered their 23 dollar seafood plate and it barely had any seafood.their general Tao chicken tasted really bad. Even when I was picking up the food, the worker gave me the machine to pay and there was no option but to tip on the screen. He looked frustrated when I asked him to remove the tip. Definitely not coming back
We ordered the menu for four with a choice of soup, fried rice, one vegetable dish and three meat dishes. It was delicious, service was fast and friendly.
Ate here for the first time today with a friend who couldn't recommend it more. Everything we ordered came quickly and the service was friendly. The owner checked in on us on more than one occasion.
We've been going here (not the chain Mandarin) for >20 years. It was more consistent in quality than many of the places in Chinatown. Loved their dim sum & other dishes. We went twice for takeout during the pandemic & both times the food was unpalatable, & we tossed much of it out. It tasted like it was 1-2 days old & reheated in a microwave. That's 2 strikes & you're out. We won't go back again. We don't know what happened, maybe their chef left, but it's too bad.
+food is okay, although they said the food is freshly made but the inside of the shrimp dumpling is cold.
-old & awful environment and tablewares. -dim sum price is not clearly labelled, paid what they said. -terrible service, serving me the way like I owed them money. No wonder why the tip is included in the food, otherwise they won't get any.
My favourite Chinese restaurant. Been coming here for years! I have many favourite dishes but I'd recommend shrimp shumai since that's a special dimsum dish you wont find in other chinese restaurants. Service is also exceptional.
This is a late review. I have been there many years ago to have dinner with my closed friend. The owner and his employees were very nice and helpful. I was very impressed for their food and service then. I have tried to remember its name and eventually found it here. I wish the boss is still there and I have an opportunity to be there again to appreciate the service.
Have been going to Mandarin Ogilvie for many years. The quality of the food has been constant throughout the years. I have yet to consume anything that wasn’t absolutely delicious. The decor of the restaurant has become a bit shabby and could use updating but all in all I go there for good food - not the decor.
This is the best place to go for dim sum. The flavors are amazing and the atmosphere is very welcoming. Staff are kind and welcoming and are informative. I could swim in their chilli oil it's that good. This was my first time trying dim sum and I'm very happy to have tried it here. Thank you for the amazing food and experience ️ I left with a very happy and full tummy
Did pickup yesterday. Excellent food. We have been going to Mandarin Ogilvie for a long time. They are always willing to customize dishes for vegetarian diet or make them less spicy. Best hot and sour soup, stirfried eggplant,
The staff was very helpful but the food was very disappointed i order 2 combination plates and to be honest they worst Chinese food i ever had i very mad that I spend 40 dollares all I was trying to do is help local restaurant get back on there feet but this was no acceptable i won't be coming back
On top of my combination plate being just okay (I'm being polite), It cost me a fortune. The rice was the worst rice I've ever seen and tasted. It actually had no taste. I'll never order there again. Cost me 21.26$ for a combo plate and extra egg roll. About 5$ overcharged in my opinion.
Ordered a combo plate with general tao chicken. Portion was extremely small. 4 hard pieces of chicken. Was very disappointed. In my experience the worst Chinese food I have ever ordered.
Best dim sum in town but never the friendliest staff or fancy dinning room (they are loud and make you feel rushed. Lunch time during weekends is crazy busy but during the week it is fairly quiet. If you want awesome shrimp shumai or dumplings you can't go wrong, it is the best here in Ottawa.
I came here for dinner with a few friends. We ordered a platter that had the special chicken, sesemi beef, Chinese pancakes, rice etc. The food was delicious and more than enough to share. The waiters were very nice in recommendations and very friendly overall. I highly recommend
This restaurant might be the worst restaurant i have ever been in Ottawa. Main door and side windows were board-up by plywood. Side door was open, we ventured into a dark room then a small dinning room. Owner/waitress was not friendly greeting us, we sat down had a pot of tea and ordered Dim Sum and Beef Noodle with vegetable. Har-Gao was half cook and still cold inside. Waitress/Owner disappeared back to her table at the back of restaurant watching streaming video on iPad. Lunch cost $112 for 4 person, BTW Chinese tea cost $8/pot but most dim sum places were free. Food was horrible, service NONE!
