Pretty expensive here compared to the Freshco down the street. If you like PC products then shop here. Otherwise there are better stores elsewhere.

This place is a hidden gem. Great price on protein which is usually butchered in house. There is always something on sale.
And, because it's hidden off Merivale, it's not very busy.
Great Pharmacy too.

1 cash only, open at 5: 45 pm putting through a very large order for the customer ahead of me. As I had 15 or so items, decided to wait rather than use the self serve. Processing of the large order was done fairly quickly, so I placed my items on the belt. The customer ahead of me showed the cashier a card on her phone for the payment-cashier did not know how to process, so called for assistance-one employee came to get some clarification and had to call another employee and both had to figure out where the discount cheque book was kept-meanwhile I had been waiting 20 minutes and there were 3 other customers behind me. Another employee was walking around filling chocolate bar displays. After another 10 mins.this employee opened the next cash and the 3 people behind me rushed over with their order. As I was still waiting-an employee came over and helped me load my order back into the cart and proceeded to the next cash at which point two other customers were in that line ahead of me. At this point I was ready to leave my order and walk out. The first cashier apologised for the long wait - albeit that it was not her fault, as she was not trained on how to deal with these types of orders, but could have asked for another cash to be opened when she saw the size of the order and the time it would take to put it through. I found this to be a very frustrating ordeal. I do not care for the self serve option, but have used it when I only have a few items. Why only 1 cash was open at this time of day when people are stopping on their way home to pick up items, is beyond me.

Started to notice after doing my groceries here a few times recently that they’ve been selling food that’s almost about to expire with no discounts whatsoever. They have snacks that expire next week and I even bought cat food that expired last year without knowing so definitely check the expiration dates before buying anything here.

Small store. Very nice and clean but limited selection. Good for a neighborhood grocery store

If your looking for a lactose free alternative to butter their becel has a few brands. I love the oat one myself.

Great local grocery store. It doesn't have everything I need but it has all of the staples if you run out of something, and has a nice little beer and wine section too. Staff are friendly and helpful and I appreciate that many of them continue to wear masks and the hand sanitiser is kept full. The pharmacy is particularly great - they always seem to have space for walk-in vaccinations.

The prepared foods counter closes between 2-4 everyday day for some reason. So annoying. Friendly staff. Not many deals here

The employee went away from me instead of helping me out. Not ok at all. Besides that, the price is reasonable.

This independent always has AMAZING prices, provided that you get there at the correct time. For example, There are markdowns on perfectly, unexpired food that is ALWAYS available in the mornings and/or evenings! Amazing staff as well! Very clean and always an enjoyable shopping experience! Keep up the hard work guys and gals!

I was at the garden center.
Even though it's still early in the season I was able to get some healthy plants and flowers for my balcony.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. They are more than willing to help find an item or answer a question. The store is clean and the shelves are well stocked.

Good store, friendly staff, however a lot of products do not match shelf price or flyer price so pay attention. I am not a random shopper I have been shopping here for many years and this is an on going issue we have. At least 2x a week we run into some pricing issue.

Truthfully depending on what groceries u do get from here.can and probably be alittle pricey and sometimes unbelievable. But I find for there meats.light peppered steak nice pork chops nice ground beef really good prices.that's all I go there for really and the on sale that catches my eye.and Walmart and food bacis for the rest.think smart wen ur on a budget

Terrible service today. I stand for 15 minutes at a cash line up that is backed up. I observe only one cash open. There are line ups at empty - non staffed cashes with customers literally asking in raised voices for "more cashiers please! "
I walk over to an older female employee maning the self serve cash area. I ask her why there is only one cash open and nobody is responding to the loud pleas for more cashiers. She snaps at me that they have a shortage of staff, several employees have phoned in sick. I suggeset that the store may want to post a sign then asking for patience due to a staff shortage as a result of Covid. She totally ignores me!
Then, I observe the Storefront Manager with a clip board walk over to the only open cash. He does not look up at customers who are asking for more cashiers while he is there. He provides no explanation for the problem as customers are right there  pleading in a high voice for more cashiers. Instead he has his face down looking at his clip board ignoring the situation. I approach him and state that I have been waiting fifteen minutes in a line up with only one cash open. He doesn't provide a reason for the cashier shortage problem. He simply says to me that "he is here now". I have no idea what this means? I tell him that he is not the only employee in this store.
Finally, he mans an unopened cash and serves one customer and then walks away to the Lotto booth. Really? I then observe him unboxing plastic bags for the cashes. One would think that trying to get more staff onto the cashes might be a greater priority! Afterall, I observe three employees walking up and down behind the cashes looking as if they're busy, but in fact they're doing nothing but moving back and forth.
This was not a positive experience today at all.

The store itself has decent prices and deals. My only disagreement with it is that there are items listed on sale on the shelves that expire in mere days. Both perishable and shelf stored items.

I never shop at this location but stopped in to pick up a flash food item since I was driving by anyway. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. The only thing I found weird was the outside layout. The parking lot is at the side of the building. You have to walk around to get to the entrance. Most likely because of the size of the lot. It's good that there is a grocery store in this area though.

I dropped in to get a regular flu shot but the pharmacist said "We're only doing Covid shots today. We're doing flu shots tomorrow. We don't want to do two different vaccines and get confused. " I, who already have my covid boosters, was dumbfounded that they can't manage something as simple as a flu shot. Maybe it's for the best. If they can't handle two different vaccines in the same day, god knows what they'd fumble up in the back room and end up injecting into me.

I love shopping at Independent but you get greeted if your white. I can count on one hand the amount of time an associate has greet me and I'm there every week.
I find that the meats fresh, fruits and vegetables as well. Good place to shop but they need to work on customer service.

I shop here a lot, it may be little expensive sometimes but all i can say its worth to visit there

I genuinely never thought I would feel the need to leave a review for a grocery store but McDaniel's Independent deserves all of the praise I can give.

I have been shopping there for a number of years and am consistently impressed with nearly every aspect of my shopping experience. The store is always clean and organized, the staff always helpful and friendly, and there's always a great selection and stock. Plus, if you shop the weekly flyer you can get some excellent quality items for very competitive prices.

Beyond this, the store has clearly gone to great lengths to follow public health guidelines and keep their store as safe as possible.

Was here yesterday at 3 and the cashier Diane was very rude. I recommend using self checkout to avoid an unpleasant interaction.

Always happy and friendly staff. Says a lot about their employer. I always say:
"A happy employee is a productive employee".

Go to this grocery store weekly. If you want to see how to do Covid safe shopping right, go here. I've never felt unsafe at this store.

Only go there for convenience really has gone down over the years though I prefer loblaws and Fresh co better especially for the customer service.

Meat manager on the weekends walks around the store with his mask under his chin. Employee that does self check only wears a face shield. No enforcement of any protocols.

Friendly and welcoming. A great small shop which has everything you need without the hassle of the big box grocery store

Employees incredibly rude.countless members of staff being rude, evasive, dishonest, and seem largely either incompetent or apathetic in their jobs. I imagine they're not paid enough. Keep your head down and do your groceries before anyone tries to interact with you.

Every. Single. Time. I go shopping here, U2 is on the store speakers. Sometimes two tracks by the time I am done shopping. Management loves Bono.

Have used this Independent's PC Express Curbside pick-up service a few times now during the initial Covid weeks and find it to be excellent! Staff picks good quality fresh produce, pays attention to my substitution preferences, makes a personal call when order is ready to review any substitutions and will even make last minute adjustments. Totally contactless pick-up. A life-saver! Thank you!

Always helpful staff and organized well. Especially during this pandemic. I have a list ready before I shop and every time I go they have everything I need in stock. Thank you to the entire staff at McDaniel’s for being friendly, patient and thorough during these trying times.

This Independent is my grocery store and I love it.great people, great prices and everything I need in reasonable space.not too large, well stocked.in have been happily shopping here for 20 years.

I noticed how the shelves have been empty for nearly a week or hand sanitizer, toilet paper, hand soap, and disinfectant wipes and that's fully understandable at a time like this, but for one of your older cashiers to have a childish fuss over being a cash-only line and giving off the hand gestures of disallowing a goal is unacceptable and this is not an exception for poor customer service.

Doesn’t post holiday hours at store only online. Was there yesterday and didn’t think they were closed today as no hours were posted

Not happy today. I've been shopping at this store almost every week in the last 4 years, but today a staff member and not so gentle, stopped me at the door and asked me to leave my backpack besides the entrance door, saying it was not allowed inside the store. This was the first time it ever happened to me. All my belongings were in it and I always use it to carry my groceries, to reduce plastic bags and make it easier to carry heavy items when walking back home. It was not nice and I am sure they would not be responsible for my stuff in it, in case it was not there when I returned.

Great store with friendly staff and nice big scales at the self check outs, but they don't have the BBQ sauce I like.

I like the bakery discount rack. Always loads of goodies for a good price. Either eat it quick or freeze the balance.

Do you like quality groceries? If so you are in the right place! If grocery stores were car companies McDaniels Independent Grocer would be Rolls Royce (minus the massive price tag)

This fine establishment is my go to for all things food! I’ve heard it said that good groceries don’t come cheap, and that cheap groceries don’t come good, but this is clearly not the case for mcdaniels independent grocer!

If you are a student be sure to take advantage of the 10% student discount on certain days!

One of my go-to grocery stores in the area. I agree it's not as cheap as Freshco however the layout at this location is so much better. Overall, great selection and friendly staff.
