Merritt Island Park

Love biking and hiking down the trails, but be mindful of danger. It gets sketchy at times

Nice place to hang out with family and friends. However, didn't like it when someone was having weed across our bench.

I walked for around 2 kilometers along the trail. It was paved, so accessible for someone with a walker. There were washrooms in the park, but they don't open until May 1st. I don't see any reason not to keep the washrooms open year round, as people might like to ski or snowshoe on the trail. The park is convenient to downtown Welland and the Walmart plaza. The island is very long and narrow. You can see 2 branches of the Welland canal, one on either side of the trail. There are unpaved trails branching off the main one which go down to the water, and lots of park benches and picnic tables. The only buildings on the island are a water treatment plant and a school. It's a nice spot to watch the birds and squirrels, get some exercise and see a bit of nature in the middle of the city. This section of canal is no longer used for shipping, so you could put in your canoe or kayak. I don't know if the water is clean enough for swimming though. The trail goes all the way from Port Colborne to St. Catharines and joins several other trails.

Wonderful park.great playground one for smaller kiddos and one for the bigger kids.lovely paved trails.water on either sides. Mile markers. There are bathrooms but they are closed after hours. Park is free.

Great paths both along the river, and canal. In the winter, it is great to feed the chickadees. We love this park.

Beautiful waking trails between the canal and the river, it has nice playground, my kids love coming here to chase ducks or throwing few peanuts for the squirrels.

One side a clear canal, the other side the Welland river rich in resources. So a very peaceful place

Even in winter this is a well maintained park for walking. Lots of birds and small critters. Playground stuff for the kids. Great for birders.

Wonderfull place. For perfection missing only the place to swim and a leashe free dog park. But I may be in minority on this subjects

Simple trail in the heart of the city, great for chats and having a seat in a nice park. Playgrounds for kids with parking. Some trails for easy biking too!

My family came for the playground but found a few components of the structure semi unsafe from the hard packed gravel base, the spinning wheel that you can smash into metal posts or fall on your neck, odd teeter totter, zipline that even some adults couldn't reach, a slippery ladder. Sigh. The park is in a great location and needs some $ to make it the jewel it can be. The canal trails do look nice.

Good playground for kids the selling trail is clean. This is pretty good for chilling on a sat/sun afternoon. But also good for biking and lounging on the shore of the canal. You can also bbq here.

Nice to be able to still go for a walk in the park and still be able to Social distance, beautiful trails

Its very Safe and lots of space to walk around the Trees and the VieW is fantastic with the rivers surrounding Your path.

Nice place to get away, walk the dog and watch some wild life. Also watch for the American Eagle on the river side.

Beautiful place between the Welland Recreational Canal, and the Welland River. There's a lovely paved path that runs from the park all the way down to where the recreational canal meets the new canal, or a lower path along the river made of mostly gravel. Upper path is well maintained even throughout the winter.

Great spot for a walk, run, or cycling! You're surrounded by nature and beautiful scenery. Amazing.

Arguably the best scenery in Welland.long trails that are well shaded make this a great spot for families and elders. Potentially busy location though.

There is a quiet and serene sense to this place where you can have a nice nature walk on the path, or bring a cup of coffee and have some solitude. Or you can meet a friend there and have an enjoyable chat while overlooking the still water. You could bring the family for a fun picnic and the kids can enjoy playing in the playground. There's even a couple of fishing spots there. There's lots to see. Lots of clean fresh air to breath in. A terrific place to contemplate life, love, self, whatever.

A beautiful place to explore. There is always wildlife in the river. There are walking paths that follow the canal and lots of green space for some down time.

Beautifully paved walkway along the canal. The city needs to remove/replace old "exercise equipment" along the way though. Could be dangerous!

Beautiful place! Great for dogs and a nice day out with the family. Lots of shade areas as well as sun. Great trails for walking and bikes.

This is our go to spot Whether it's feeding the ducks, walking the path or playing in the park, it's always the best place to enjoy your family or have some alone time

Great place for a walk with a nice long paved trail and a lower non paved trail along the river. Good playground as well.

My most treasured Niagara landmark for the past 35 years. Protect and keep Merritt Island beautiful.

The park was clean there are washrooms lots of play equipment for the kids picnic tables & benches to eat or just look over the water. Nice place if out for a drive that way.

I have a bad knee so a level paved path in the woods is very nice.overlooking both the Welland Canal and Welland River.nice park for the little ones too.
Wish there were better facilities like bathrooms and water fountains on the island.but all in all great

Nice walking trail. Gives you the feeling that you are right in nature even though you are still in Welland

So great for a quiet walk in the middle of the night, bringing your kids to play, exercise, scenery, fishing, kayaking, etc. The atmosphere is so relaxing. It's truly a gem.
