We had two Vienna schnitzels delivered. The schnitzels were flavourful, crispy and not greasy. Carrots and Caesar salad were good, home fries were done nicely.
Good schnitzels. Service was good. Prize is alright. If you are looking for a variety of schnitzels in KW, this is the place to go. I also recommend their goulash.
The food is overall, pretty good. The schnitzel was good (a tad on the drier side), but the sauerkraut was top notch. The appetizers (soup, salad, and garlic bread) were good. The sides were hit and miss: The perogies were surprisingly very good, but the cabbage rolls were very disappointing (served cold and just tasted bland). The mashed potatoes and potato salad were okay.
Everything was very, very simple and cute. I liked the variety of the schnitzels on the menu. Franz Joseph Schnitzel was really good, Cordon Bleu was okay. If I'm around and in the mood, I would go again and try more things there!
To me this is one of those places that just has what I need, old school charm, great staff, and perfect schnitzel. I have not been here in over 10 years and they did not disappoint, I enjoyed every moment there. It's almost October Fest and they are gearing up for the season, to bad I will not be here in a week. What a great experience, if you get the opertunity to have a meal here do not hesitate, just go, and get the schnitzel!
Very homey and cozy atmosphere. Our go to if we are craving some schnitzel. They have a lot of different varieties, so everyone can find something they enjoy. Food is always good and the portions are just right! Can be a bit loud due to small rooms, but manageable.
Metro was super accommodating for our last minute post wedding dinner of 12 people. The service, value and quality of our meal was outstanding. Everyone was happy with the meal and our server (in training - great humour).
Update Decided to try again and can report it is back to being very very good. Had 2 dinner there recently and it was quite acceptable again.glad they are back to really good food. Edit Late fall 2020 had a really bad schnitzel dinner. Really nasty Have not tried since Was the best.not so sure anymore. The best schnitzel in town. If there is better I have not found it.
Very traditional place. I think I counted more than 10 types of schnitzel on the menu. Everyone in my party of 8 really liked their dishes, so I can definitely recommend.
Excellent schnitzel! My personal fave is the champion schnitzel with extra gravy, spatzle and cesar (a creamy dressing that tastes homemade.two thumbs up!). If you haven't tried Metro, give it a shot. The restaurant isn't fancy, but, is quaint with large portions and great food!:)
Did I go to the wrong place? I was flabbergasted after reading all the good reviews. This was hands down one of the worst restaurants I’ve been to. Met a friend for dinner, dined in. The mashed potatoes were gummy, the schnitzel was bland, the gravy tasted like chemicals. The garlic toast and Caesar salad were good. It was also extremely hot and the flies wouldn’t leave us alone.
Disappointed! It has been about 3 years since I ate there last time. It was great then. But I had the Hungarian Goulash for $25.99. It was beef stew, mostly gravy, no Hungarian paprika to be tasted. I had 4 small Cubes of beef. The spaetzel was good but the “beef stew” was poured on top drowning it. The borscht was delicious. TERRIBLE COFFEE!
Schnitzel a bit overdone. A bit disappointed in spaetzle. Expected more noodle-like as in through an actual machine and traditional.it was kind of starchy. To compare, Concordia has the real deal. Prices high compared to other places too for the quantity and quality. It's just not the same as it was years ago.: (
Ordered delivery as I usually do roughly 1-2 times per week as we fell in love with the food. Unfortunately this experience was absolutely terrible. They gave my order to the wrong driver which left my family staving after waiting almost 2 hours. We contacted both metro and the delivery service and both refused to take responsibility and even offer an apology. Unfortunately with delivery services, even though you pay right away you do not get a refund right away. My family is starving and missing money from our pockets from this metro mistake
The only thing good here was the dome picnic table seat we were sitting at. This was a worse experience than eating a bag of Haribo sugar free gummy bears.
I have never been to a restaurant that tries to justify why they don't season any of their food. They literally put French fries out to serve that weren't salted, Mashed potatoes that were plain, Boiled carrots that were right out of the pot to our plates. The "Best schnitzel in town" builds you up to think its going to be an amazing experience of mouth watering of deliciousness but instead the most flavour you'll get is from their Kitchener tap water. I really hope they take this review seriously and ramp up their menu. I have been reviewing food for 6 years now and this by far is the worst restaurant I've ever visited. Literally tipped the waitress as a sorry you have to work here type of tip.
The service was so friendly, very welcoming too. The portions were huge and delicious though I definitely think I’d get something smaller next time because I got a combo platter and it was absurdly huge. All of the food was amazing and the Caesar Salad especially was phenomenal. My only complaint is that everything is quite dated, and the booths and tables definitely need updating because they are small and a bit uncomfortable. As someone who’s 5”11 it was uncomfortable and cramped, can’t imagine how it would be for anyone taller than me. That and we could feel every movement from the people behind us getting in and out of the booth. Will definitely be returning in the future that’s for sure!
Tried the Farmer Schnitzel and the potato pickle soup. I can’t move…if I had room I would have tried more. Best schnitzel I’ve ever had. I’d give it 6 stars if I was able!
It's nice to go to a restaurant that's been serving me delicious schnitzel for over 20 years. Reliably good, consistent meals. I love the red cabbage side, the Parisian schnitzel hot, not too heavily breaded with plenty of sautéed mushrooms and cheese.
Food is fresh, and comes with a real homemade flavour instead of being greasy in the way that restaurant food usually is. Because everything is made to order you can expect it wait a while for your food but it is completely worth it. They usually bring out your soup or salad first to help tide you over. I promise, you will be completely stuffed by the time you're done eating. The kitschy decor is perfect and adds a feeling of warmth and cozinesses. This restaurant is a Kitchener institution and I hope they never change it.
Used to LOVE this place. Sadly not anymore. We ordered the disappointing "Metro Platter for 2". From the extremely soggy fries to the what I'm assuming was boxed mashed potatoes, to the even MORE soggy pierogi's and the tasteless "garlic bread". Not to mention the 1/2 bowl of soup and overcooked dried out schnitzel, we will never return again. I will say that the cabbage rolls were covered in a tasty sauce. This has happened the last two times we ate at the Metro and we are over it. I feel this place has had its day and there is way better schnitzel and AUTHENTIC European food to be had in and around the Waterloo Region. Sorry Metro but you've lost your luster.
The food is always absolutely fantastic, and the portions are generous with reasonable prices. I could eat their side salad and bread for days. The atmosphere is also welcomely unique. Service is always friendly as well - although my only criticism would be sometimes it seems the servers can take a while to bring drinks or ask if you need anything. They look over-busy most of the time which I’m assuming is the reason, especially given the covid conditions currently. Will definitely be back again nonetheless! One of my favourite places in the city for authentic home cooked flavour.
Sauerkraut was on the sour side and need some sugar to get to German taste. Home fries great. Wiener schnitzel almost as good like my German born Mom use to make. Got a sample of cooked red cabbage. I could taste the apples that were added to make the delicious taste.
Ordered off Skip a while back and the food is some of the best in the city. It’s fresh and tasty and lots of it. Good value. I recommend the Champion schnitzel but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
Just look at the picture of my cordon bleu! I had never found one like this until I decided to try Metro. They do not use gruyere in the filling (only my Swiss partner would expect that), but for me it was absolutely delicious, as well as the sauerkraut. They have a long list of schnitzels to satisfy customers from different backgrounds. It's a small and crowded restaurant, so expect to wait some minutes, but it's certainly worth it.
Can you taste memories? I was first there 42 years ago when in university. Loved it then, love it now. It's still a dive but if you like the best schnitzel ever at low price the Metro is for you.
I was recently very pleasantly reacquainted with the Metro. I had been there in my twenties but somehow have not been back in a long time. I'm almost 50 now! I was looking for a family restaurant with a traditional menu - like the kind of great home cooked meals that leave your stomach settled and full, without being overly complicated or pretentious or overpriced. I found the perfect choice with the Metro.
I ordered the Vienna schnitzel with mashed and coleslaw, and my normally picky young daughter ordered ribs with veg (carrots). We split a Caesar salad. Our meals arrived quickly and looked great. The schnitzel was thin, tender, crispy and perfectly seasoned. The mashed and gravy were good as we're all the sides. The ribs were tender and tasty but maybe just a bit too saucy. We ordered strudel for dessert and it was great. Nothing groundbreaking here, just good food done right.
The Metro has obviously stuck with a formula that works. The interior decor and vibe is timeless and comforting. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The food is traditional German standards. The prices are fair. I know exactly what to expect when I return, which I plan to do a lot more often.
My first time every doing a review. My husband introduced me to the Metro years ago and every BIRTHDAY that was my wish, their food. Due to covid we ordered take out tonight, it was dry, burnt and in the garbage, he told me to call and complain, my answer, why. My family owned and operated a great restaurant for years, but not like the Metro where you could find nothing but the best schnitzel. Sorry Metro, but this girl is not ever coming back. Ok you say one time, no it is not, we had my husband/sister/and others and not always good, me, I could have had seconds, always good to me. Last time for me.
This restaurant has been on our list of places to dine forever all including my wife and two daughters always enjoyed what was offered. Over the past few years the quality along with the reverse price increase ie.size of perogie, portions getting smaller, addition of cheese once on garlic bread and light drizzle of ceasar dressing have made us second guess dining here since our last visit on the 25th of June 2021.
We eat in at the Metro at least once or twice every year. We ordered delivery last night and everything was perfect! All four dinners were great and there was so much food! I like that you can select when you want your meals delivered.ours came within two minutes of the scheduled time:) We certainly will be ordering from here more often during the lock down!
Edit: Ordered again about two weeks ago and as usual everything was perfect! Thanks Metro!
It's has the charm of a little German restaurant with a lot of personality. There's a good variety of menu items - especially schnitzels- with ample portion sizes. Would highly recommend you try this place if you're in the Kitchener area.
Great, warm, and inviting restaurant with many paintings and decorations that add character. Staff was extremely friendly, and the food was excellent. The schnitzel was tender, flavourful, and generously portioned. Just wish there were more beers on tap - which only had Pilsner
We had a very enjoyable evening here with another couple. Great place for conversation. The staff were excellent. The meal and dessert was great. Highly recommended.
It has really gone downhill. I have ordered a couple times this year with skip the dishes. Both times were not that good. Finding it very salty. Went there for Mother's Day and it was awful. I couldn't even eat the schnitzel. The breading was so salty it got worse as I tried to eat more. When the waitress asked if I wanted a "take out" I said "No it is too salty for me. " NO reduction on our bill. And we made the mistake of ordering 3 apple strudel to take home. There was absolutely NO Sugar in the strudel. We threw them out. Very disappointing and I won't be going back anymore.
Great Food. Slower service However, the food is delicious and plentiful. We dined at 4: 30 on a Wednesday, when it was mostly empty, and had a hard time getting our server. Went to pay at the front because she wasn't coming back to get our money. Again, that is minor compared to the absolutely wonderful meal.
Everything was amazing it was clean the food was good the service was good but it was a little bit expensive 3 schnitzel dinners the bill came around $70
The meals here are delicious, not to mention massive. Everyone in my group ended up taking half their meal home because they are so big. The mashed potatoes are perfectly seasoned and don't get me started on the stuffed schnitzel.amazing!
If you like schnitzel, then try the Metro. This is one of our favourite restaurants in KW and our favourite Schnitzel restaurant, period. Portions are large, and meals include garlic bread and soup or salad.
This is my second time going and I had the same thing as the first time that I went. The dinner for two schnitzel platter is amazing. It's arguably more food than two people can eat depending on how hungry you are but it's a lot. I think the value is pretty good too. The flavor is definitely great. I like that things are homemade there. You can tell. They recently increase their draft beer selection to include some lesser known Ontario beers which is a highlight for me. I'm not an expert on German food but this place has turned me on to it. Big fan. Recommended. Their apple strudel is very good. Different then any other type that I've had. But maybe the types I've had haven't been real strudels possibly? I trust this place over something cheap and frozen that I got from a box.
Service was decent. The waitress was polite but slow and there was only 1 other customer at the time. The food was terrible and expensive. I dont normally write reviews but felt it was important to save anyone else from eating there. I went with my husband and young adult son both of whom can eat! They both left half their plates to go in the garbage.
Meh! I order a combination plater / pigtail and schintzel. Let put this way, the pigtail was a waste of time. There was easily an inch of fat. They covered it on a mix of ketchup and little bbq sauce. The "schnitzel" was everythin but. There was no indication on the menu that indicated the items would be inside instead of on top. The spatzel was flavourless. This is our 3rd visit to this place. The first time it was bad. The 2nd it was fantastic. Today it was a complete miss. No consistency. Definitely NOT the best schnitzel in town.
We celebrated my Mother's 80th here! There was 13 in our group, we could not of asked for better service from the staff and the food was awesome! I would like to thank the Metro and their staff for allowing my Mom to enjoy her Day! I recommend the Metro to anyone who asks. Thank you very much!
I was so sad to have a bad experience here. This place was amazing back in the 90's and 2000's. Went here the other night and waited in the extremely small waiting area for about 15 mins before we were even acknowledged or greeted. Took another 20 mins for our order to be taken and another 10 on top to get a drink. The food was decent, but nothing like it used to be. The place's downfall is that they are always understaffed and therefore the wait-times are ridiculous. The food is still decent but could be a lot better.
The Metro has been a family favourite since I was a young child. The portions are always good, the meat is always fresh, never frozen and the staff is always happy to help with anything you may need.
Even friends and family from out of town love it when we take them there. We have never had an unhappy experience here!
A quaint little german restaurant, claiming to have the best schnitzel in kitchener.and they delivered. Servers were uninvasive but still friendly, knowledgable and prompt, and i left feeling not just full but satisfied and price was on par for what youd expect. 2 ppl had a starter salad a main dish and cesar to drink, plus an order of spatzel (german pasta dish) to split and with tip came to under 60$. And as a nice touch if youre not great at math there is a footnote on your recipt with percentages if you choose to leave a tip
Schnitzel of many varieties served here, and pretty good sausages. Portions can be absolutely massive. Atmosphere is a bit outdated, but perhaps charming in its own way. Food can take quite a while to be served, so prepare to wait. Once the food arrives, expect a satisfying meal, but nothing too outstanding in terms of German cuisine. However, there aren't too many other options in Waterloo/Kitchener, so in that regards, Metro may be your best bet. Service is fairly good, though the layout of the restaurant can make it difficult to get somebody's attention if you are tucked away. Can get quite warm during the summer.
