Worst branch in Ottawa. Staff are not helpful and will question your intelligence before telling you there’s nothing they can do to help you. Seriously question the capacity of staff here to support customers with basic banking problems.

Worst bank ever. No one is working at a reasonable speed. Too slow no one cares. Stay away from this location.

The level of incompetence that I experienced from the advisors at this branch is mind boggling.

The staff turnover rivals that of most fast food restaurants. As a result you are never dealing with the same advisor any time you call. The advisors that are there are not very knowledgeable and not very creative.
We dealt with this branch for a number of years, while we had mortgages on our principle residence and 2 rental properties. My wife also had all of her personal banking, RRSP, TSFA and the RESP for our son at this branch.

In 2018 the mortgages on all 3 properties were up for renewal. We were planning on structuring the mortgage renewals so that we could pull out equity to purchase a 3rd rental property. The advisor that we were dealing with would only recommend their FLEX mortgage program (with a secured LOC) and the suggested taking money out of the LOC for the down payment on the new property. I wanted to refinance the existing properties, taking cash out (adding to the principle balance). The LOC approach was 1.5% higher on interest than the refinancing approach. This approach seemed to totally confuse the advisor. Before him, another advisor was trying to convince us to sell the properties and put all of the money into a managed RRSP and TSFA. The advisors manage the investment accounts, not the mortgage accounts. So she would have gotten more credit for selling more investment accounts. We actually had to walk her through the projections to show how the rental property investments would be better than the RRSPs. The third advisor actually addressed the mortgage renewals but then 6 weeks later I got a call from Scotia mortgage office reminding me of the pending expiry date of the mortgage on one of the rental properties. I told them that it had already been renewed. They responded that they had nothing on file. It turns out the advisor forgot to file the paperwork on that one property. I went to the branch to resolve the issue. I was told that it would have to be treated as a new mortgage application and that rates had gone up since the original renewal application. I stated that that was not acceptable and that I expected them to honor the terms of the original renewal. Fortunately I had my copies of the original paperwork that the advisor had signed. I actually had to threaten to get my lawyer involved before the bank would relent and renew at the original terms. In the end we got fed up and pulled all of our business from the branch. Mortgages on 3 properties, RRSP, TSFA and RESP and personal banking were all pulled from Scotia and moved to CIBC; where I have had all of my personal banking since my high school days. I can say that my experience at CIBC has been much better and professional. The only thing that I will say about Scotia Southgate is that their tellers are pleasant to deal with. For that they get a 1, instead of a 0 on the STAR rating.

Horrible experience today 21st August 2020, harrassed, humilated and belittled by a belligerent staff named JAAD AL-TWAL over not pulling up my facial mask, despite wearing a complete faceshield on as well. This ignorance staff needs to re-attend classes on multiculturalism, customer service etiquettes and conflict resolution. Adedayo Owolabi.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Whenever I had problems they were very nice about helping me and checking in with me upon future visits.

I had a terrible experience at this bank with MULTIPLE members of staff. Their incompetence and lack of basic knowledge caused me months of stress and severe financial hardship! I would advise anyone to stay away from Scotiabank or, at the very least, this branch in particular.

Years ago, I met with an adviser to talk about investing for a down payment. We went over all of my information and, based on what I told her, she recommended putting my money in an RRSP. Over the next several years I continue to contribute to the RRSP, under the impression that I would be eligible to withdraw the money using the first time home buyers credit as advised.

This summer I was preparing to purchase my home, so I met with a different adviser to confirm that I would be able to withdraw the funds. She took down all of my information and similarly confirmed that I could withdraw all of the funds. I asked her to check with the branch manager Joanne just to confirm and she said the EXACT SAME THING.

A few weeks later, I closed on a house and called the bank to withdraw the money for the down payment only to find out that I was not in fact eligible to withdraw the money! I was left with the choice between withdrawing the money minus 20% tax, or scrambling to come up with the money elsewhere! I had to escalate this all the way to the Office of the President who offered to compensate me $300, to make up for the TENS OF THOUSANDS that I should have had!

The point is that 3 different employees (including the branch manager), on 3 different occasions gave me the WRONG information that almost caused me to lose my house. They have no idea what they are doing there and I would not trust them to handle even a cent of anyone's money.

When I tried to transfer my RRSP to a different branch it took them over 9 weeks to send in the paperwork and I had to call and leave several messages before they finally got around to it.

Horrible staffing the manager made me feel like a criminal I had alot money paid to me and they treated me as if I stole it. I went and got my cheques certified at rbc came back and they still didn't want to give me my money after an hour of arguing with the manager they finally cleared my money but to have to go through this at your bank #nogood I wouldn't recommend this branch unless you want to criminal for being successful. IM A BUISNESS OWNER AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BRANCH SOUTHGATE PLAZA OTTAWA ONTARIO.

Awesome branch manager.
I was dissatisfied with something, she followed up with me (without me asking for a follow up), and solved my problem.

I love coming to this location, particularly because of the teller Abbey. She's always cheerful, bubbly and genuinely cares. I've been to other branches before where the teller is obviously miserable with their life that they can't get rid of you fast enough. Not Abbey. She remembers you by name and asks about your day. She's funny and has a great sense of humour. Honestly, this woman makes my day. Other branches should take note on this kind of customer service. Being good to people really brings people in.
