Sushi Umi

There is only a fixed menu, which means you don’t have many choices. The rice of the sushi is a bit hard and does not have that soft and glutinous aroma. As a result, the taste of the entire sushi will not be amazing. The chef has his own understanding of some dishes, a little special and different, but more of it is the bonus points of the ingredients themselves. It is not too impressive. Overall, it is not amazing and the price/performance ratio is not high. I only recommend it to sushi enthusiasts to experience it.

As soon as you walk in you are greeted by the hosts who walk you over to your seats and give a quick walk through of what you are going to be served, additional add-ons and a long list of alcoholic beverages (sakes, wines and beers) to choose from. It's a very intimate setting which is great with each chef serving up to 4 people. The whole experience was amazing and watching the chefs skillfully craft each piece of sushi was definitely a sight to see. The servers were very attentive and I almost never had my cup of tea empty. As for the food, hands down one of the best sushi I have ever had. Everything was fresh and the fish almost just melts in your mouth. Overall a great experience and will definitely be going again.

Awesome experience at sushi Umi. We did the lunch omakase which was really good (11pc sushi, hand roll and tamago). The chef was very knowledgeable and we had a great time learning about sushi, the different types of fish and all the thought and dedication that goes into preparing such a meal.

The best Omakase in Markham, very fresh and tasty food, the ambience is excellent, all staffs included the chefs are attentive to every details to ensure you enjoyed the meal.

Wife and I bought take out to go and it tasted great and at a reasonable price. We’re not a fan of the smell from the wrapping tissue that was used for take out container. I was reminded about the smell when I took out the cash I paid for a few weeks back today. It’s been over 2 weeks and I can’t believe the smell is still there. Washing the cash doesn’t even get rid of the smell. I would encourage the owner to change the practice because I wouldn’t go back for this reason.

Everything was amazing from the service, the atmosphere, and to the sushi! Definitely will come back again. Although the price is definitely on the high side, it was worth the experience. The chef was also very considerate of our meal, ensuring each of us were satisfied.

Amazing place for Omakase. We had an incredible experience here. As the restaurant is quite small, it feels very intimate - almost like a private dining experience. The wait staff are very attentive and accommodating - you really feel taken care of! The meal is prepared right in front of you by really skilled chefs. It is incredible to watch. The fish and ingredients they use are fresh and delicious. They also have a great selection of sake, and a sake flight if you’d like to try more than one. I would definitely recommend Sushi Umi to anyone who is looking for a more elevated Omakase experience.

Quite a disappointment considering the price. The sashimi is not fresh enough and the seasoning is a bit off. I ordered yamahuzu sake and they refused to have me take it home. You can put the sake here and drink it next time you come back, they say. I am sorry I am def not coming back.

We had omakase in many Japanese restaurants in Toronto. Umi is on top of our list. Their sushi are fresh and delicious. Services were excellent. The Chef Ivan was very friendly. The price is quite reasonable given the high quality of the food. I highly recommended this restaurant to anyone, especially if you live in uptown.

The omakase box was great! Sushi was fresh, but the wrapping paper for the takeout box ruined the experience. They used a scented wrapping paper with the smell of cheap perfume. That smell stayed on my hands for hours after and on my clothes for days. Would have been better just putting the boxes in plastic bags.

From the moment you walk through the door, the walkway to the entrance is unique and immediately sets the vibe. The food is amazing! Staff super friendly and we even received a slice of cake with a birthday sign on it compliments of the house! Definitely a great time and my taste buds had the time of their lives hahah.

The food was great, everything was fresh and high quality. The price is fair and within range to all other Omakase places in the area. The price is actually cheaper than Zen but just as good.

This place is small and only serves patrons on Omakase. The chef was very friendly and constantly asked us if everything was good and smiled throughout.
