The Barley Mow

Had lunch at at the Almonte Barley Mow with friends. Food, atmosphere and server, Lynn, were awesome. Thanks for the great service!

The Barley Mow in Almonte is hands down the best place to eat in town. It has an authentic, old world, British pub atmosphere and the vibe there is great! On my first visit I was greeted by the friendliest bartender, Amanda and I was able to get an amazing table overlooking the Mississippi River. I had the poutine and my friend had a burger and chips and they were both exceptional with ample portions. I’ve been back many times since and have recommended this place to family and friends. If you’re looking for a restaurant that encapsulates the feel of what Almonte is historically known for then this is definitely the right choice.

The venue was great. Somewhat hard to find though. Additional signage on the street would be helpful. Service was ok, however ditsy waitresses didn't come to our table for the 1st half hour

Terrible service! Waited 5 minutes to be seated and then completely ignored for 20 minutes! Not a “we will be with you soon”, not an offer for a water…wouldn’t even make eye contact. Everyone else in the section was tended to and 3 parties that came in after us were served. The guests at the bar that came in after us even got food served before anyone even acknowledged we were there! We left and I told the server on the way out that we had been completely ignored for 20 minutes and she had nothing to say. Absolutely ridiculous and no excuse. No they were not busy… there 4-5 tables in our section and the the bartender who was serving customers other than us was cleaning glasses rather than acknowledging a paying customer.

Food was good staff are pleasant and the atmosphere was very nice with the patio beside the water

9 of us went to Almonte on Saturday for an offroad tour. We went to the Barley Mow but the patio was full. We were going to wait but then some seats at the inside bar opened up and a few tables so we sat down. We waited at least 15 minutes to even be acknowledged and the bartender didnt look up once at us. So we got up and left and got a box of fries instead. Probably missed out on $400 at least. Poor service indeed.

Really nice staff and good food. Nice to have the patio open already. One thing, you need to answer your phone! Or put a message on it saying no reservations….

We were celebrating a birthday and our area of the restaurant was full with our friends and family. The food was good. A number of us ordered the fish and chips special. Actually a good deal. One drawback was that the fries were overcooked. Some were virtually crisp and burned. I noted how many did not finish their fries. When servers see the amount not consumed there should be a communication to the kitchen from the servers to address this. I find that overcooked fries seem to be the norm.

Fast and friendly service with a new pub like menu and stone mill atmosphere. We were a group of nine seated in the back portion of the restaurant with a great view of the falls. A better view is available if you opt for the patio.a must do on a warmer day.
Food portions were generous and all enjoyed their meals. Definitely will go back.
Getting to the restaurant's parking lot was a bit tricky due to road construction activity.go through the single lane archway off Mill St. Watch for the Barley Mow sign hanging overhead.

I've been a few times. It's never been anything spectacular. I would return occasionally because Almonte doesn't have too many options.

Unfortunately we had a bad experience today. Finished a good day of work and we stopped by for some food and a pint. We had parked our truck and trailer in the parking lot taking up 4 spaces, as out of the way as possible. I usually don't do this unless I have no other choice, and there wasn't any other choice. We were seated and received our beers, waiting on a third person to join us, and a guy (my guess would be the cook, but I don't know for sure) came to our table and asked if the truck and trailer was ours. We said yes, and he asked if we could move it, as we were "taking up the whole parking lot". I politely asked where we should move it to, as there are no double-long spots and no public parking nearby. His answer: "not my problem". I was pretty surprised by that answer. If he had given me a reasonable solution, I'd have been happy to move the truck.

To note, there were still plenty of open parking spaces in the lot. If I had to guess (I didn't count), probably 6-8 open spots. The restaurant was empty aside from our table and one other table, at 2pm on a Monday afternoon. This was not a lunch or dinner rush. This was not a holiday or weekend.

We finished our two beers, paid our bill, met with our third and went to Joe's Italian Kitchen. We were welcomed by much friendly wait-staff, and enjoyed much higher-quality food.

Don't worry, I moved my truck.

Service was fast and friendly for a Saturday lunch but alas the quality of food was lacking for the price. French onion soup was watery. Smoked meat was dry. Bun on hamburger wasn’t fresh.

They were perfect in accommodating our staff Christmas lunch.nothing but perfect service.thx for great experience

Nice location on the river. Typical roadhouse style menu. Had the blackened chicken burger. Ok worth it. Decent beer selection featuring 1000 Island Brewery.

We just had an epic family-reunion meal of fish and chips, for 25 adults and 20kids (between 1-12 yr, that is to say young and squirming and *noisy*) and it was wonderful. The service was generous and kind and timely and the food was delicious. I am hugely grateful to the cooks and servers. We were chaotic and they were steady. It couldn’t have been better!

The patio is very scenic. The food is overpriced, but not horrible, and the service is alright, sometimes slow. It's a decent pub.

The patio was a lovely place to enjoy lunch on a nice day. It's right by the river. Food was good and the portions were large.

Wonderful setting with several seating options. We choose the back room which was bright and had a lovely view of the river. Unbelievable specials! Fish and chips with a 1000 Islands Beer for $20 and Fajitas for $21. Food was delicious and the portions were quite large. Staff was friendly and very helpful. Highly recommend this restaurant.

The view was nice on the patio. The food was not good. I ordered the pulled pork, it was pretty dry and not much sauce or flavour in it. Just taste plain.

Very long wait. Food was unsatisfactory: ordered fish and chips and there was no tartar sauce, fries were soggy, and the coleslaw was bitter. Fish was decent though.

Kitchen Nightmare - we wanted to visit the patio but it was too cold. We sat inside the restaurant.it was dirty, windows had cobwebs, flies were constantly buzzing around our food - there was a dead bug smeared across the window pane. The fly paper hanging in the corner was a nasty touch and the booth was ripped.during COVID we're looking for a clean and sanitized space to eat our lunch but this was gross. The hands-free sanitizer at the front was empty. The food was OK and service good but I won't be going back.great location too bad hygiene and cleanliness are not a priority.

We had a good experience. The cocktails were good, the food was good, but we were told by some locals that the day time staff is much better than the evening staff, so we got lucky. Either way, I'd recommend this place during the day!

Poor Service - Thank goodness for the decent food and great location. The server we had this past weekend, Trudy, was the rudest server I have ever had. On two occasions, she cut us off mid-sentence. She would not even allow us to ask for a glass of water. She interrupted us and told us they were short on cups and never returned. It was a hot day and a glass of water would have been nice. When asking about a pint of beer, she again interrupted us mid-sentence. She was very rude and did not check on us once to see how we were doing. The place needs a good cleaning inside and out. I am surprised management did not take the opportunity while closed due to COVID. I would think they would want to entice business, as I am sure a lot of them were hurting due to closures. I am trying to support local business but I am not sure I will be going back.

Take out service was terrible. Called in the order and was told it would take 20-25 mins, we waited 45 mins, which is okay. But when we walked in we were ignored for about 10 mins. Finally get the food home and the burger was burnt, had to throw it out!

Awesome patio view in Almonte! Wait staff was very freindly. Food was delicious! Wasn't very hot by the time it arrived, but the patoo was extremely busy. Certainly a return restaurant.

If you only want to have a couple drinks by the water, then I recommend this place.
If you want to enjoy a nice meal, I suggest going elsewhere.

We waited about an hour for our food to arrive. When the wrap with “crispy chicken” arrived, there was about 1 cubic inch of chicken in the entire wrap. It was essentially a lettuce wrap. It came as no surprise that the waiter never asked us how our food was, I think she could tell we were not impressed. Ate it anyway as we were so hungry by that point. Left disappointed. I don’t expect to pay $20 for a lettuce wrap.

They’re heavily relying on the view to get people to eat there.

Love when it’s patio season here, they have the best patio lookout of the rushing waterfall. Lots of great options that range for all types of meal preferences. Love all of their vegan and vegetarian dishes they have. Definitely great for patio season with their drink options.

Very pleasant staff always and nice atmosphere. They only problem is the menu is quite limited, so after a few visits, I'm looking to go elsewhere for different food.

Food was pricy but very good. Tried the cauliflower tenders and they were awesome! Cauliflower yuck, tenders yum!

Gorgeous setting on the water. Food tasty, hot and fast service. Busy location. Staff friendly and efficient.

This is the 2nd time at this Barley Mow location Both times we’re similar, middle of the line, over-priced less than great food. The meat in my wrap had grizzle and chewy pieces throughout it the first time, the next visit I got the BBQ Bacon burger, I had to pick off all the bacon it was raw. Fries were cold. I wont go back to this chain again, the food quality is not worth it for the price, there are so many other pubs with better food.

Lovely small tucked away pub that make you feel like a regular. Food was fantastic though it was a bit pricey but otherwise great atmosphere!

Excellent location - food is standard Pub Fare, parking is very limited.outdoor patio in season is a real treat, quiet and overlooking picturesque waterway. They need to improve their beer selections, bring in more local or craft breweries dozens exist in this area - people will pay a premium for better quality beverages. Bud is pretty low grade beer and if this is your standard - you are missing out a great deal on what people like and waht draws them to your establishment.

This is a real nice small pub atmosphere sort of place. I have not had the food but the service, locale and drink selection is great. We will be back.

Nice location and building, bad mgmt and bad attitude among table staff. Drink prices fluctuate based off how intoxicated they think you are.

Really enjoyed our meal. The portions were huge and we ate everything because it was so good! Big regret that I did not take a picture. The service was also very friendly. We definitely will be back. Lots of parking and accessibility friendly.

Meat loaf was best I've had in a long time. Generous serving and loads of bacon. Couldn't give 5 stars as veggies and mashed were lukewarm at best.

Great location and will revisit in warmer weather. Parking is right at restaurant which is an added bonus in this small town.

I love the Barley Mow here. They make good quality food with a modern menu that has a lot of choice. Lynn is an amazing server and always knows what I want when I walk in. Portion size is decent, although the prices can be a bit high, I would say the food is worth it. They have fun sides instead of just fries - want corn on the cob or baked beans? You got it!

Nice restaurant in the area with fantastic views. Worth dropping by in the summer to sit on the waterfront patio. Interesting menu with options for all types of preferences.

Great place! App's are the same price as main courses, though. But their small salads are really good sized.

Meal was great, but the place is in need of repair, a few dollars in Reno's, and a good cleaning. Great view of the river, stately building.

Standard pub fares in a location missing maintenance. The theme is somewhat of wood decorations with beer mugs chandelier. Wooden wall decor lack deep cleaning. Someone had left a half smoked cigarette in the entrance. Bathrooms should be updated. Old heavy chairs. Food was good (taco salad was huge, enough for two people), the chicken naan with pesto was delicious. Cooks are doing some great work but the restaurant needs to be.refurbished

We love coming to this venue as the waterfall is fabulous. Unfortunately the restaurant is going downhill. It has cobwebs everywhere, holes in the walls and you could smell the stench of the bathroom before we even got near it. The waitress's are fantastic though. Please, spend some money on the building.

Quick & friendly service.we were worried we would be late getting home but we arrived at our usual time even though it was an extra 30 minute drive.food was wonderful and the view is spectacular!

The view from the patio is great. However went there today around 1: 45 and with not many people there. We came with a toddler and were seated right away. We waited 30 minutes for a server to speak to us about drinks or food. We ended up giving up on the server and went and found a server to place our order. I could not believe they could walk by seeing that we didn’t have drinks and our toddler had covered the colouring page completely and not think about asking us if we had been served. The food was ok but if the location was not really nice we would not go back.

Hit and miss. Hostesses ignore new customers, food wavers from good to ok, we have been turned away twice so they could catch up on their services.

Really poor food quality, dirty venue

It’s a shame that the restaurant is located on a premium spot next to Mississippi River, in this vintage Mill building with great riverfront patio!

They obviously didn’t take good care of this building: greasy floors, dirty windows with spider webs, flies everywhere, moldy smell throughout, argh it was disgusting!

Quality of food is really poor, selection limited, over use of salt and grease on all dishes. Service was really slow too, couldn’t figure out why it took nearly an hour to make a few sandwiches, chicken wings and a salad. Chicken wings tasted like straws, no flavour at all just salty and greasy, worse than the frozen wings from Costco.

Location is beautiful (hence the 2 star rating) but that is all. Will not return. Not recommend!

It is a sunny day today, we walked in and seated with two kids and elders at 11: 40, the waitress informed us the food would be about 20 minutes wait. It was an acceptable wait time. It turns out we waited almost for an hour and after I confirm we still needs to wait for another 30 minutes or more. No one bother to let us know after the long wait and we have to leave or some fast food on the road because the kids are really hungry.

They really need to properly inform the customers about the waiting time change so we can leave the place earlier without starving the kids.

Never go again, not like the last review they did let us know the wait was long near an hour but that was acceptable to us as we didn't have any plans. Order the quart beer and the glasses were not clean, had finger prints and liquid inside so drank out of the bottle. My wife ordered surf plater and was so discussing, the smoked salmon was sooooo cold not sure if it just came out of the freezer and sat while we waited for the hour. The server was excellent and friendly. Never go to this place again except for drinks and only out of a bottle. I am sure management has changed as I have been there a few times and have always enjoyed.

Great patio beside the Almonte riverwalk and the Enerdu power station. High prices but worth the visit. Great service as well.

Beautiful location overlooking the Mississippi River. In the springtime the Falls are spectacular. Good variety of food including some curry dishes. Weekly specials. Friendly staff. Affordable.

It's a decent pub by the water. Getting a seat outside is the best because of the view. The food always comes quickly and it tastes good too.
