The Black Dog Pub

They don't disappoint! We are very happy with their service as they always are very accommodating to any allergy restrictions on several occasions.

I've tried many items from the menu and have enjoyed all of them. Nachos, burgers, calamari and Cobb salad are a few, none of them left me hungry.

If you're ever in a pinch for dinner, don't hesitate to check out the black dog pub.

After a lengthy doctor's appointment with many tests we found ourselves starving for a late lunch at The Black Dog Pub in Port Union, a nicely appointed pub, with lots of seating, a wide menu, and a good selection of craft beer and wines.
We shared the Shrimp Gratinee, then had the Cottage pie and Guiness Steak and Kidney pie with fries and salad, respectively. The shrimp were succulent and respectfully cooked, and the butter and cheese sauce was highly flavoured as was the herbed garlic bread. A delicious start.
The pies were generously meaty and very flavourful and a very hearty portion. The fries were clearly cut from real potatoes. The salad was fresh and crisp and the ranch dressing was a really good quality.
The service was friendly and prompt.
All in all, a wonderful meal and a very pleasant experience.
We will definitely be back.

Lived by the Black dog pub for years but never went. I have always seen the road lined up with cars pre-pandemic and again now after a short hiatus during the pandemic. Not sure what I was expecting the interior to be but it’s a beautifully decorated English style pub. The sitting area has a good set of tables and chairs and is warm and welcoming even makes for a fancy restaurant which I wasn’t expecting. Food was great not cheap but not expensive considering huge portion sizes and quality. Tasted great. Restaurant portion is busy and I have heard it’s best to make reservations. Service is one thing I would like to comment. I realize pubs have their regulars and staff will be more inclined to serve them better. I have come a few times and noticed service is meh… it’s hit and miss if a server comes back in a decent time. Sometimes the answers a bit kurt to your questions and always seems rushed to get you out. Too bad I would like to go back more often now that I know it’s a nice place but I’m not a fan for the service. I’ll try them again later and see if it improves.

We were there for lunch. My Guinness steak and kidney pie was very good. My pint of Kilkenny was also good. Would visit again if in the area.

Absolutely great experience, food was delicious and our waiter was great, went above and beyond to make sure we had a great dinner.

Got the Korean brisket sandwich, and overall, it was OK, a bit of a small portion for the price, but tasted good. I'd go for the wings next time.

We have usually eaten here 3 or 4 times a year for many many years and have always found the food to be very good and reasonably priced. Unfortunately last Sunday evening my schnitzel was quite dry and I only ate a third of it. Our (always smiling) waitress asked if I would want to take the remainder home, but I politely declined, telling her I was disappointed with it. She offered a different replacement meal but everyone else at the table were finished so I again declined. She left and then immediately returned and again apologized and told me my meal was not included in the bill and also offered me a dessert to take home. (I picked the apple crumble).
You can’t get better service than that!

We love this place! We come here once every couple of months. The food is always delicious and the service is always top notch! They have three different patios so there is tons of room to enjoy summer. Their sticky toffee pudding is the best we ever had.

I visited it last Friday at noon with my colleagues to celebrate our last working day of the season. The place was literally empty at that time. The reason for my review is letting the manager/owner know that I got a horrible experience because of the service provided by your waitress "Mandy". She was very sarcastic, rude, and extremely unprofessional. I would give this place a CERO stars for the way they treat their customers. She seriously needs training in the field. Your customer doesn't visit your restaurant to argue about food but to have a great meal and have a great time. My colleagues were in shock, one of them works 2 jobs and she happens to work part time at a restaurant and she was telling us all that if she talks to her customers the way your waitress was talking to me she would get fired right away. I don't recommend this place at all. We aren't coming back.

I am a realtor and I often take my clients out for meals and beverages to different restaurants in Durham mainly. I have been in here 4 times in the past 2 months. Instead of judging in just one visit; here I am giving my feedback after 4 visits. Any given day, if you are going for lunch? Do NOT go there before 1.30pm unless you would want to wait for eons to a drink at your table. Definitely under staffed. After my 1st visit during regular lunch time (before 1.30pm) ; every other visit was after 2pm and still, the service was horrible. Once the server comes and takes your initial order; you would have to file a missing persons report with police to find your server back. Also once you pay your bill and once the server takes your tip? And you want something else? Forget it, they won't even bother looking at your face! Very sad. The very last event I had there was with 3 corporate clients of mine. We ended up spending easily over $400 in food and beverages (including 4 bottles TOP OF THE LINE wine). The last bottle of wine we wanted order was after settling the initial bill. As I stated earlier, the server got her BIG TIP and never were to be found. And no one else was pay any attention to our table. I had to get up, walk up to the Manager and ask for another bottle of wine. Absolutely horrible service. They definitely need way more staff. Because they are under staffed, the cleanliness of the washrooms, of course down the drain during rush hour. Quality of food is great. Not sure I would be taking my clients anymore to this place anytime soon?

It’s pretty small compared to the amount of customers they have. They do there best to accommodate everyone. Some of the servers are a little to friendly for my comfort. Especially some of the female ones. I come for dinner not to pick up a date. Especially when it’s my date. Knowing how far they can go is important from a business aspect. I was not impressed. It deterred me from revisiting.

I was pleasantly surprised at the large menu, excellent food and happy staff. The Pub is a large and long standing and seems to be more than just a meeting place. People come from all over to enjoy time there. Excellent!

The cottage pie was great, and everyone in my group was happy with the food, except my wife who said her wrap was okay but she would order something else next time. A long draft beer list but nothing from local craft breweries (there are many in the area) save for a lager, light lager and a red from Rouge River. We loved the patio area, the atmosphere, the staff were friendly. We WILL be back again!)

10 years ago this place was a hidden gem. It seems ownership has changed and now the food is merely good. Example: Schnitzel is overdone and thin and no more mushroom sauce. Service is decent and atmosphere is great. It is still busy though crippled by limited parking. You might get away with parking across the street. Still worth a visit.

I've been to Black Dog Pub a slew of times because I live in the area. Its a nice, relaxed pub with friendly staff and an extensive menu. The last time few times I ate there, I had the fish and chips which were good. Its noted as the a fan favourite, so to speak. The fish is not overly battered which is good. The fries seem homemade and when served hot, it's delicious. The last time I went, I had a braised lamb shank sitting on a bed of buttery mash potatoes and root veggies. It was satisfying for sure. Not necessarily something I would run to get again, but it was pretty tasty and good portion. We had the chocolate cake for dessert and that was pretty good too. It was literally a simple yet decadent chocolate cake. You can't really go wrong with the food choices at this place. My only criticism would be that both times in the last month that I have been there, one of our meals was cold. My sons chicken fingers and fries were cold so the fries texture was like cardboard. We couldn't send it back because as you know, a hungry child cannot be contained sometimes! Overall a nice little spot loved by the community.

This was our first visit to this restaurant and they did not disappoint. The food and service were both fantastic. I had the Irish whiskey burger with fries and my wife had a butternut squash pasta dish. Both meals were great tasting. We finished with a sticky toffee pudding for dessert and it was the best we’ve had. Highly recommend this place and will definitely be back.

Essayer le tartare de betterave. On a pris un apéritif excellent et des entrées à faire rougir des resto 5 étoiles. Prenez l'entrée de tartare de betterave. C'est léger et savoureux.

Always a good atmosphere at the Black Dog. Went out for a celebratory drink after our sons hockey tournament- we were on the "patio" and the staff was great.

A great English style pub with above average food. A great vibe. For a more lively setting, I recommend sitting in the bar. For something s little quieter, I recommend the dining room.

They’ve been here for 12 years, the place feels original. The menue is very well designed. Our waitress was super nice and friendly.

If only I could put -100 stars. Once I'm done puking up the rotten chicken wings I was served here I'll be getting tested for food poisoning. No clue what happened after George sold the place but it's so awful now. Better hope theres no sign of a food born illness on the test or I'll be after compensation

Attended a wedding at the Black Dog. Carol and team took very good care of the 44 of us in the downstairs party room and patio. We were all impressed by the speed of service where the team was running food and drinks to the tables. Very tasty and fantastic selection of desserts. The team took care of every detail which is impressive since they were open on a weekday with a full house upstairs. Loved it! There's a reason why this place is a local gem.
