We went to the French for our Rehearsal Dinner, we were a group of 15. The Manager Kate was excellent & able to accommodate us as best as possible with the space they have. Although we had to sit a two separate tables, we were right next to eachother. Kate was very friendly, engaged with us, seem to get to know us personally. We had two different servers, which Kate explained to us, which was fine. Our table that we were at, we started off with a very friendly gentleman who was answering all of our questions, very prompt & great & then all of a sudden it got switched to a different server, who had a completely different attitude, she definitely wasn't as friendly didn't seem like she wanted to be there, very short with her responses, barely smiled or made eye contact. The food was fantastic, no complaint about the food at all, everyone enjoyed everything, it was delicious. Just not the service you really want when you are celebrating one of the happiest times with your loved ones. I wish they had not changes our server & we had our original the whole time. The lady serving the other table was great as well, mo complaint there. At the end of the night, I wanted a group photo for our memories & I asked our server if she could take a photo for us, when I tell you the look that she gave me & even rolled her eyes & said "sure", I almost said nevermind, that's how off put I was. Not what I expected after reading all of the wonderful reviews & meeting the manager, I had high expectations. Another reason for the 3 stars is my niece ordered Virgin Sangria (No Alcohol) & when we got the bills it came to $15 for a VIRGIN Sangria, we questioned our waitress as to why it was the same price as an alcoholic Sangria & she said "yep, thats right" and then said "we use a special sparkling wine, that's why it's expensive". Even if this is the case & a sparkling wine is used, there is no reason it should be costing the same as an alcoholic Sangria, it cost more than my cocktails & the beers others order. That's unreasonable if you ask me.
I would still recommend The French for those looking for a great meal, I hope our server was just having a bad day. It unfortunate, that this is what I will remember from the evening, but the food was phenomenal, and I'm sure if we go back to Hamilton we will try The French again.
No corking service? Dissapointing Long wait for food, even for bread for the table. Was there 3.5 hours for what should have been 2 hours. Had a 5 year old with us. She was very patient, but come on! Kids don't want to have to sit for that long just for fries and gnocchi
Went here for my sister in law’s birthday dinner. One thing that ruined it for us was the horrible customer service. Our appetizers came out in 30 minutes and then an hour later for our main entree. We just had water and it never got refilled until we asked at the end. Food was too salty, burnt. We got the steak, trout, and 2 kinds of duck. It’s honestly nothing special. I wouldn’t recommend and would never come here again.
My partner and I recently had brunch at the French, and it was absolutely fantastic! From the outset, we were impressed with the atmosphere. The ambience is curated with a bespoke range of fine materials, including: exposed stone, hardwood floors, modern lighting and authentic French bistro chairs. The French does a remarkable job of transporting you to a warm summer day in Europe. To start, the coffee smelled amazing and was locally sourced. Next, the French onion soup was unparalleled and had an abundance of flavour, with notes of sourdough bread and garlic. Last, the eggs Benedict were incredibly satisfying and the crispy potatoes left a lasting impression. Irene and Thomas were our severs and truly made us feel welcome. If you are looking for an exceptional place for brunch in the GTHA, then the French is the right place. I am truly looking forward to coming back and sharing this space with friends and loved ones.
We always come back for the steak and frites, very irresistible we usually have only the steak but this time we ordered a salad Maison which was ok. The waitress was very friendly and checking on us frequently
Visited with three guests and had a lovely evening. Knowledgeable staff and excellent food in a great location, what more could we ask for? One of my guests is a particular fan of French cuisine and she was not disappointed! Another person in our party had a number of dietary restrictions and the server was very accommodating and was delighted to answer any questions.
We have now been coming to the French for around 3 years. This is not something we do often; return to the same restaurant on multiple occasions. Here is the thing about the French. It’s the treatments of proteins and vegetables. The balance of flavour and texture. The wine and cocktail menu. You’re not going to find anything like this elsewhere in Hamilton. If you’re looking for value for your money it is here. Franco-fare done effortlessly, urban, vivacious, warm and current. This is the place you bring people for memories together over delicious wine and food.
You gotta try this place if you’re in mood of good ambience. The food was nice with decent servings. You gotta try their beef tartars. They source halal beef too but you may reconfirm before reservation.
Unbelievably rude waitress- After dinner, my friend and I wanted to have some deserts with 20 min left from out allowed reservation time. But waitress didn’t serve us because based on her 20 min wasn't enough for having desert.i told her, we will finish our desert and we will leave right in 20 min. But she was extremely rude and keep arguing and raising her voice.she simply ruined our night.terrible experience
This restaurant is the one I like best. I go to many restaurants but to this restaurant I keep coming back again and again. The team is very amicable and the cooking they offer is so appetizing. I never decline to have a nice dinner in this place. I recommend this place with pleasure.
I found the food quality and presentation very good. However I expressly requested no pork and was presented with prosciutto atop luke warm eggs. The server offered to remove the pork but not to replace the dish.
The environment was attractive but noisy as we were seated beside the hostess desk. The service was ok but some staff seemed rushed and it didn't make for a calm ambience.
I had expected more of a refined experience. Perhaps a weekday night might be more pleasant.
My husband and I went for our first wedding anniversary dinner and it was absolutely incredible! My husband had the steak and fries and I had monk fish which was amazing. Service was great and the restaurant was beautiful. Definitely recommend
Nice French restaurant on king William. Great atmosphere and the food is really good.loved the steak frites and the tuna nicisoise! Will be back for sure, I want to try the burger!
The food was good but the servers had a little bit of attitude and could have been friendlier. I got yelled at for having my mask below my nose when walking to the washroom. I really did not appreciate that. They even said if I wanted to come back I would have to wear a visor.
The staff at The French are always so pleasant and helpful. I’m a regular - at least once a week - and the steak frites is my go-to. It is always served at the perfect temperature/cook. Their fries are the best. There’s never anything to complain about. Who could?
Big thank you to Irene and staff for making every visit so great.
It was absolutely wonderful. This place would fit perfectly in Quebec City or Old Montreal. But with a modern touch. The food was superb and perfectly cooked / presented. The service was beyond excellent. You need to eat here.
The food is always lovely, the steak frites are amazing. We visited this place 2 times now and both times have been an amazing experience. First time we dine at the patio and they have a nice and cute patio so we had a lot of fun and enjoyed the sun. Most recently we dined inside and the ambiance was amazing and the management is always nice with accommodation and all. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THIS PLACE!
This is an excellent place for brunch or to celebrate a special occasion. The menu is creative and elegant, as is the atmosphere and décor. I always feel special when I come here and the food is always spectacular.
Lovely place for a dinner date. The food was absolutely amazing (stuffed eggplant, duck confit)! We devoured the beet & chevre salad! We appreciated the decor and romantic ambiance. Sarah was a wonderful host. Highly recommend this place!
Perfection from start to finish. Lovely staff, romantic ambiance, and the food was to die for. We had oysters with homemade sauces, beef tartar, gnocchi (the best I’ve ever had) and the monkfish which was really unique in flavour. Dessert was a chocolate praline bar with flaky salt and raspberry sauce… so good! They also paced everything really well which is appreciated. Love this place:)
Perfect place to enjoy a brunch with your special someone. Warm staff and quick service. Perfect ambience and food. Loved the Latte, egg benedict and avocado toast.
Had a truly amazing experience here! We sat on the patio and were pleasantly surprised at how private and quiet it was. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We ordered truffle gnocchi and steak & frites. Both dishes were perfect. The wine selection was on par. I would definitely eat here again!
Great service and delicious food! Such a lovely find in Hamilton. This was my second time coming for the brunch and it’s honestly my favourite. They will carefully cater to your allergies/dietary needs, and the food came out so quickly despite how busy they were. Highly recommend supporting local:)
Absolutely lovely experience, we had to write a review before we left. We were lucky enough to have Paul as our server and he was nothing short of amazing. Great atmosphere, fresh food, 10 out of 10!
The restaurant is a short walk from First Ontario Concert Hall. The atmosphere was laid back and friendly. We enjoyed the salad and escargot apps and the hot sourdough bread with butter made inhouse was great. My spouse had steak frites which was the best in a long time. I had a bite and I would agree. I had the duck breast which was cooked perfectly and very enjoyable. We found the prices to be rasonable and we both said we would go back again.
We treated ourselves to an amazing take-out meal last night. 3 of us ordered the Winter Eats menu and one of my sons chose the Steak Frites instead. We had the Salmon Rillette (so good!), the celeriac soup (delish), the bouef bourguignon and the salmon and lentil dish. The panna cotta was yummy, too.
The food was absolutely delicious. I had a full English breakfast. It was the best one I’ve had in a while. Everything was piping hot. The children had meals off their menu and there wasn’t much food left. The service was prompt, courteous and not over-bearing.would highly recommend The French to one and all.
We treated ourselves to an amazing take-out meal last night. 3 of us ordered the Winter Eats menu and one of my brother chose the Steak Frites instead. We had the Salmon Rillette (so good!), the celeriac soup (delish), the bouef bourguignon and the salmon and lentil dish. The panna cotta was yummy, too.
Wow. Made the celebration in our bubble the very best. Can’t say enough about the food. It was simply perfect. From start to finish was fabulous! Devin our server was attentive and polite. The food was outstanding! Will be back again. Fantastic! If you want a good dinner night out in a nice spot head here
