Recently, I went to United Rentals to get my aerial boom/scissor lift certification and I decided to go with them because I used them when I worked in Newfoundland and they were great to deal with. However, this was not the case here. From start to finish, there were a number of issues that I came across. For starters, I went onto their website to register for the course (which I couldn't sign up for as you have to "Request information" on the course date and someone will get back to you) and I had to register for the course twice as no one responded after the first request (I spaced out the request at least a few days apart). Once someone got back to me, they could not take my payment over the phone and told me I had to call someone else. In the end, I had to call three different people before someone finally took my payment. Then, they did not send me any details about the course (i.e. Time it started, address, items to bring, etc.). I had to email them twice and ultimately call into their training academy to get answers. Although the person on the phone was helpful and pleasant, she asked me to bring two pieces of equipment that I did not have access to (a harness and lanyard) as that equipment was in another province waiting at the job site. When I asked what to do, she could not give me an answer. They ultimately emailed me back and told me that they would have a spare at their office, which I really appreciated. However, the harness was rusted in several places and appeared to have frayed ends, and the lanyard was also frayed and it made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe while wearing them. I have pictures for reference if anyone wants them. If I had known about these, I would have bought a new harness and lanyard somewhere, but I had no idea I needed this until the evening before the class because no one sent me any details!
The instructor was very knowledgable and happy to help people, but I felt he went over things very quickly and for someone learning this for the first time, it may have been overwhelming. However, he is new to the role and I feel with practice and more classes, he will continue to improve. I did find it unprofessional though that he was vaping as he was grading people during the testing period, but that's just my thoughts.
Overall, it wasn't completely terrible but I definitely will not return for future training.
