We are regulars at Yamato for both the atmosphere and the food. Fried rice is the classic and sushi is a hidden gem. I'd highly recommend going with a group of people and trying the teppanyaki for special occasions.
Wow this restaurant is nice, we had to wait for the table got full, even though the chef made a very good job, thank you, the only thing I didn't like so much was that even it wasn't too full they ask us to leave inmediately after ate our dinner, I hadn't finished with my beer if this thing wouldn't happen everything good
Probably the second best sushi I've ever had (after the Tokyo fish district). Service was good but it's not the cheapest as you can imagine. This is how nigiri and sushi should like.
Been here before with no issues. Sushi was not up to par so let them know it was not enjoyable. Their response “there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s you! ” Never heard that from a restaurant before to blame the customer
We went just as they opened, ordered sushi and both my partner and I got what could only be food poisoning and suffered a night full of diarrhea and vomiting. The servers are nice but they do have a tendency to be very hasty to take your order when the table isn't ready. The people seem fine at this place it's just that it made me immensely diarrheal and I would urge caution. The food for the price is definitely subpar but it is Yorkville. I just wanted a better experience.
A great way to get a dinner and a show. We did the teppanyaki table and had a really great time. I got the NY sirloin with garlic butter and it was fantastic. The veggies and fried rice they give you is also really good along with the miso starter. Highly recommend for someone looking for more than just a meal.
Dissapppintrd because we ordered a bottle of Sake and a sushi dinner to share, among other things to share (order #MGO1655864008833), and we're promised a salad and a soup. Unfortunately the waiter never brought the soup or the salad and were were so into our conversation that we didn't notice until we left. Very disappointed, considering this place charges Yorkville prices for their basic sushi.
I've had the opportunity to dine here twice now. Once at the hibachi table, and once a la carte.
Our hibachi experience was great. Very benihanna "esque". More experience, less entertainment. Good was great, a bit pricey but definitely worth it as the food was amazing.
Our a la carte experience was also amazing. We had a bit of a mishap with one of our soups as we wish we were told it was a beef/pork broth. This is important information, and needs to be shared with customers. I had already consumed half of it before thinking to ask. They replaced it immediately with a miso soup.
Udon bowl was amazing with veggies, and will definitely order again. The sushi here is as expected with a Japanese restaurant, fresh, tasty and delicious.
Nice decor and interior atmosphere, but the food is not good. Tempura soba was very bad - the tempura was all soggy in the soup when i received it and the soba was too soft. Not sure how you can call it tempura when the batter has pretty much dissolved when i received the dish. Sushi appeared to be using Chinese rice rather than Japanese rice and was below average. I would like to think that their teppanyaki will be better, but I won’t be back to try.
Over price, spent over $150 for a M3 Australien “wagyu”. Would never return, highly highly not recommended!
They are using the cheap things and selling the really high price! For the U. S. A grade wagyu only about $97/kg selling at “City Market” just right in the “Manulife Center”.
The negi toro maki is so fishy, they trying to put a lot of green onion just for cover that fishy taste, but it doesn’t work.
You should never serve the things which you must through into the garage!
I know for some parts from the fish cannot be served as “Sushi” or “Sashimi” because those parts are trimmed off, not harmful, that is why you using those for the rolls. But the one you served to me, it is different story. It should never came on any guest’s the table. It is just the garbage! Non-eatable! You should’ve tossed that!
I’m also pretty sure it is farmed tuna as well.
People, listen to me and listen well, do not waste your money at this place, not worth! Oh, BTW, their “Teriyaki Sauce” taste like the factory things.
I’ve been to Yamato many times except in the last 2-3 years. The quality of food was never an issue, I’ve always had fantastic meals here, except for last night (07/02/22). I ordered the shrimp and scallop teppanyaki dinner and my partner ordered the lobster, steak, and scallop dinner. Our scallops and my shrimp were over cooked and the lobster had a chlorine smell and taste which was very concerning and therefor went uneaten. The steak along with the veggies and fried rice were just ok. There were no issues with the service. Our chef and server were both great. It was a night I was really looking forward to but sadly the food didn’t live nowhere near our expectations. I don’t know if we’ll be back.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you’re a restaurant manager, I would strongly recommend you apply for a management position here at Yamato. Why? Because you’re allowed to be arrogant and rude to customers, which is unheard of. Besides, you’re never required to apologize to any customers, because they’re completely the ones to blame!
Walk in without reservation, the guy server gave us a bad attitude and just said “no table” without letting us wait for the next table. He don’t even care about the customers who is trying to walk in to this restaurant. This is how you serve your customers? Run away from this restaurant!
Experience very good. Food I’ll say not that special but the process of cooking is extremely interesting. Excellent place for most events and family. A little bit noisy. Maybe not a good place for proposal.
We went for the Teppanyaki dinner. Our server, Edwin, put on an amazing show! My husband loved his meal however, as I don't eat meat I asked if there was perhaps a tofu replacement. Sadly, they said no, even though there are other tofu dishes on the menu. Recommend ordering from the menu at a regular table for those who are vegan/vegetarian as all I had was fried vegetables for my meal.
We had a wonderful time at Yamato’s. They were able to squeeze us in as a walk in. The service was attentive, the food pretty good, but the tappanyaki is the real reason to go here.
Though the restaurant is located in yorkville and costly, this is definitely not a high dining experience. Other patrons were in jogging pants, the restaurant can get loud and rough and the food is basic (and yummy).
The food was not that great. Live cooking was alright if u into that kinda thing. The food was just not great. I got the new York strip and lobster as it was one of the expensive things on the menu and I thought it'd be good. I asked for medium rare and it was a thin strip cooked to medium rare with no browning on the outside. They used a compound butter, far to acidic for this meat especially when it didn't have that much fat on it. The lobster tasted like white fish, all you could taste was the seasoning. It wasn't bad but it definitely not worth the money and definitely not that good.
Great severs and chefs. Rudest and the most arrogant managers I’ve ever come across.
I arrived earlier than our reservation time and was told to wait for my company to be seated. While waiting, two groups (without the entire party) were taken inside to the tables in front of me. After simply raising the question/issue to the manager, instead of explaining their so called policy to me, the only thing we received was agitation and ignorance. I said “ if you are bending rules for other people, you could have also seat me down first, we made a reservation, we wouldn’t leave without dining”, the manager miss understood me and told us to leave if we don’t want to eat.
When we asked to speak to the general manager, instead of going straight to their customers and asking what happened, they gossiped on the side and the GM simply chose to avoid us for some good minutes. When being confronted, he straight on argued with us about their policy, refusing to just acknowledging that he could have explained his action of exemption to me while taking the other two groups in in front of my face. After arguing with us, he dared saying that all he wanted to was to see me sitting down and be happy while everything he did was against that will.
Compared to other guests, we were not served water until I asked to have our servers. Servers, chefs and food were good as usual.
Average taste and experience. The source/ dressing used was a big disappointment. Material is fresh though. Probably I was expecting too much. More about watching the teriyaki cooking show.
What a great, fun experience for the family. My daughter just loved it. The food is so delicious and the service so nice, kind, sweet. I have been often and will continue to come again and again!
Always top notch - both terrific fresh food and exemplary friendly service (as is their other restaurant Fune, which unfortunately isn’t serving food in the current climate - albeit understandably). Both restaurants have been favourites for many years, and greatly looking forward to returning to both for the great dining experience each provides - one of my favourite teppanyaki spots in the city!
