Value for money! Spending around CAD50 then you could have a set of French meal including a glass of house wine. Many choices for customers. The appetizer I chose-Wild Meat Cretons was full of meat, pork if I didn’t remember wrongly. I liked the taste but couldn’t have too much; then the accompanying sauce and the side dish (I guessed it was something like pickles) did a nice touch—lightened the grease. About the main dish, it was interesting! The puff pastry wrapped with salmon so it was crispy outside and soft inside. Nice together and seasoning. The sauerkraut also made the whole dish not too greasy.
As for the dessert, I was not a fan of it since it was too sweet
Anyway, I really enjoyed my food and the atmosphere here.

This is going to be a long review from someone who hates restaurants. I have fairly bad social anxiety and restaurants are a trigger for me. I usually can't enter a restaurant and feel at peace. This place is perfect for me or anyone like me. It's small and about as cozy as you can make a restaurant. Unfortunately i made the mistake of going to Quebec city for the xmas markets not realising just how hectic it is so my nerves were too heightened to eat by the time i made it to the restaurant with my wife. We were seated by a very friendly man but i unfortunately forget his name because i was still in a bit of a nervous haze but he was great to deal with and i was put a little more at ease (a little scruff for a beard and long hair in a bun.shout out.) then we were greeted by our waiter named Sam, he was great. Probably the best experience ive ever had with a waiter. I did order food but i didn't manage to take more than a few bites due to my nerves but it was absolutely delicious and i did eat it all later after i took my meds and my nerves were back to normal at the hotel. Anyway so dealing with sam was absolutely fantastic and my wife who doesn't have a social anxiety issue loved her meal so much she cried because it reminded her of her recently deceased grandmothers home cooking. I think sam recognized my anxiety and when i asked for a container after only eating half a meatball he didnt make me feel bad in any way and i think he picked up on what was happening and knew not to ask me if everything was okay and just brought me two containers with a smile. So if you read this far and you or your spouse have anxiety or you just like a smaller more intimate and cozy place to eat i can't think of a better place than this. 5 stars for sure and i WILL be going back but i wont make the mistake of going to quebec city at such a popular time so i can really enjoy it next time.

With Aux Anciens Canadiens being the oldest restaurant in Québec, it is an absolute must try. When you walk into this restaurant, the atmosphere feels very cozy. It feels more like you’re visiting someone’s home that they converted into a restaurant (which basically isn’t far off from what it is), and there’s a certain special ambience that just sets a comfortable tone. Our server was very generous. He was attentive to us (he kept refilling our water at least every 2 minutes), and he was very invested in making sure we had a pleasurable experience. I ordered bourguignon bison topped with blueberries and my wife ordered the duck poutine. Maybe I’m biased because this was my first meal in a different country but it absolutely blew my socks off. The bison meat had the perfect tenderness to it, and I thought the blueberries were going to make it too sweet, but it was very subtle and well balanced. My wife liked the duck poutine very much as well. We both were ecstatic with our meals. I would recommend this place to anyone going to Québec!

The seafood platter is slightly salty and the wine tastes strong, the meatballs and potatoes taste okay, and the homemade beer is good. However, the main course is not large, and basically the set meal is not full. You need to order additional meals, and the price is a bit expensive.

We ate at Aux Anciens Canadiens on a visit 10 years ago and loved it so we thought we would go again. It did not disappoint! Service was excellent and the menu had a wonderful selection of game which is what we really wanted! The food was delicious, the portions were massive and the wine was lovely! We had another very enjoyable time here and highly recommend it!

Being in Quebec City for the first time and end up having a dinner at unplanned place, was a bit uncomfortable, yet this little place exceeded all our expectations! It provided a cozy atmosphere and delicious food! The price was right too! Great service! Good all around! Everything is nice.

We came here for a lunch special that included an appetizer/soup, main meal and dessert. The food was amazing, the waiter so friendly and the restaurant is just so charming with lots of thoughtful touches. We had the the Grandma Plata and the Chicken breast. Maple caramel dessert.

We were passing by Quebec City and wanted to taste local food. It didn't disapoint. But we found the menu a little complicated with the prices. They have to explain some details and still, we got a little confused. But the place is clean. They sanitize tables and chairs as soon as the patrons leave, and the service is good. It's worth the visit.

Honestly one of the best restaurants I’ve been to.food and service were both outstanding! Ordered the 3 course meal with bison fondue, beef Wellington and creme brûlée / bread pudding dessert. Also ordered the caribou/deer/beef pie.everything was so delicious and I couldn’t stop myself from eating even though I was full! The service was fabulous.staff were super friendly and we felt so welcomed. Prices are affordable and the restaurant was well organized and clean. Would definitely come back!

Wonderful experience! Felt like I was having the traditional Quebecois dinner. Lovely atmosphere and great service. The food was unbelievably good. Reasonably priced for portion and quality!

Came here for lunch, great price (online says $23 but it was actually only $18). Service was great and the portions are huge!

Amazing food and service, best place and most economical restaurant in Québec City for traditional Québec food! I had pig knuckle poutine, hard to find this dish in Québec! Very tender pig knuckle! My husband loved his grandmas plate!
25 September 2020 8:51
The meat pie here was amazingly delicious!
Love the atmosphere in this restaurant
Kinda surprised that it wasn't busy during lunchtime.

We had the lunch specials and were truly impressed by the portions and quality at a very fair price. The traditional cuisine and atmosphere was a unique experience paired with excellent service.

2 of us had an appetizer, main course, dessert course and choice of wine or beer for <55$ together. If you have more budget, maybe try one of the fancier entrees.

The maple pie dessert is extremely sweet, but definitely necessary for the signature Québec experience.

On vacation during COVID and this place is a MUST especially if you love supporting historical places! It’s a very authentic place!

Not only is the building of interest because it is one of the oldest in Quebec City, it is also beautiful and has many artifacts throughout the restaurant.

Super cozy, warm, inviting and the service is excellent.

Last but not least, the food was great! I got the classic brunch and really enjoyed it! That ham and tourtiere! My husband loved the Bison Shepard’s pie! Comfort foods I tell ya —but really delicious, savoury comfort food!

For the entrée, my husband got the cretonade de gibier and it was sooooo delicious! I enjoyed it more than the soup although it was good as well —just between the two the cretonade de gibier was awesome!

It’s worth getting the special table d’hôte!
Enjoy friends!

Sorry the pictures are blurry but at least it also shows portion size!

Had the parmesan fondue, french onion soup, and the 3 meat fillets (venison, bison, caribou?). Was awesome. Lots of the stuff on the menu is exactly what my grandma makes during Christmas time.

The maple creme brulee was insane too.

We had an early dinner there for 20$ but if you want to have regular dinner on weekend its better to book it earlier.
Its cozy with an french design environment and customs. You can have a good french dinner experience in the restaurant.
There food and its quality its something ordinary and it can be improved to give the real french restaurant.
07 January 2019 5:56
The food tastes like French comfort food. It was good if not the most falvorful. The place is wonderfully cozy and their lunch menu which includes a glass of beer/wine (I would go for the beer, the wine is a bit vinegary), a starter, a main and a desert for under $20 is well worth it. Nice fireplace and very friendly service in bother French and English. Place is quiet too.

An overall Good experience. The staff was wait staff was warm and friendly and super helpful when taking our order. The food was old school Canadian food.meaning you get to eat what the Ancient Canadians would have eaten. So we were there for the history and the novelty of the food. We were not disappointed.
The history of the “house” and the decor are fun to explore.
The only disappointment: we had a reservation and were 15 minutes early. The restaurant had few patrons as of yet, but we were not allowed to be seated until those 15 minutes had passed.not very good customer service to begin with.

If you want a taste of traditional French Canadian food, look no further. The owner and his wife personally took care of us while we were there. The food and the atmosphere was simply amazing! Highly recommend!

Do you like to sample local cuisine, in a relaxed atmosphere? Do you hate being ripped off as a tourist? If your answer was "Yes. " to these questions, then Aux Anciens Canadiens is the restaurant for you! Here you can enjoy a delicious three course meal, witha glass of local wine or beer, of traditional Québecois fare, from a prix fixe menu, starting at less than $20! The food on the prix fixe menu is hearty and plentiful. You won't leave feeling hungry, or let down by bad service, or worse- poorly prepared food. Here everything is delicious and arrives to your table oven hot and the service is efficient and friendly with bilingual hosts, willing to explain their menu, if required. This is BY FAR" the best restaurant for traditional Québecois fare- hands down! I cannot recommend it enough!

Quaint with snobby staff. Had lunch here on recommendation of an official city tour guide. Apparently it's housed in Quebec City's oldest building, so we were expecting a nice experience. Off the top, must say the food was very good. Unfortunately the service staff push the daily feature and don't explain that we had other options (for the same price). Seemed to rush our decision making though they weren't extra busy. Anyway the food was all top notch, though the house wine (Included in 3 course option) is horrible cheapo stuff from Chile. Disgusting. The place was 100% patronized by tourists, which is fine but quite a few had infants and misbehaving youngsters with them. Needless to say it was noisy and unpleasant. Nice old Quebec decor/setting but totally spoiled with noisy children. Our waitress was snobby and so was the other young waiter. Not at all pleasant. Became especially unpleasant when I refused to offer a gratuity, especially when she almost insisted on receiving a tip. We are fully bilingual so they could not try to fool us. There are better places to eat without the hassles.

This place has everything: service, ambiance and quality food. We sat upstairs in a small room decorated with hunting guns, tea kettles, etc.the staff took great care of us. We ordered off the $49 pri fix menu. I started with a deer pate that went well with the candies carrots on top a toasted bread. The split pea soup was a bowl size and tasted fresh. The grandmas plate had meat pie, pig skin, sweet fresh tomato sauce, sweet baked beans in a pastry shell, and roasted potatoes with a brown gravy. My friend had the crab cakes and we shared the grandmas plate. The pre fix included a dessert of your choice. We opted for the maple bread pudding. It has NO raisins, so we were happy. It's served warm and a maple sauce. You can add ice cream for $5. Overall I thought it was a good deal for the pri fix. It also Included a drink which I chose wine with a black currant liquor in it. Hey stop seating at 8: 45pm. They have lunch and early bird specials (seated by 5: 45pm).

Check it out.local favorites done right!

It was my second time dining there. They made me feel comfortable, welcomed & had a great table. It's a quaint little place, cozy, friendly staff - thank you Lydia, delicious food - my hats off to the chef! I had the beef Wellington & Maple Syrup Creme Brûlée!

I had the privilege of enjoying a wonderful dining experience here three weeks ago. The young gentleman who served us was top notch! He was am am exceptional server! The 4 courses I had were simply incredible.a blend of traditional fare as well as some modern selections made the dining experience that much more engaging. Clearly the management has out done themselves here! Every staff member we engaged with was professional, friendly, and helpful. The chaos of so many other restaurants (shouting, meals coming out at seperate times, servers not having time to answer questions, sitting and waiting to be acknowledged, etc.) There was no sign of it that evening in any section as I observed very carefully. I worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years and have honestly not experienced too many establishments that have a team like I found here! Congrats to everyone for a job well done! I will be back again without a doubt! (I apologise to our server for not remembering his name but I will try to remember and include it. I did write it down as I was intending to write a letter to the management to express my thanks and genuine enjoyment)

Wow. Their food is such high-quality that it would even be reasonable for them to take $80 for 3 people at lunch. The food seems like it is just plain tasty, but it’s actually really good with no taste sticking out (what most restaurants do). The food is absolutely amazing, since they made all this in such a short time, and it’s a shame that I cannot give them a 120% rating. Seriously, like, this place makes you eat so much that I nearly had no room to eat dessert! Honestly, we saw people complaining on the reviews that it’s too expensive, so to give you guys a tip, come at lunchtime. Too bad we were too busy eating to take pictures!
Last but not least, you must taste meat pate here! ;) Well, thank the food tour guide who suggested us this place!

This is our first time to Quebec! We ordered lunch meal, and it’s totally worth price! It comes with one entree, a glass of wine or beer, one main course, and one dessert! Just for $20! I order their chief special, chicken breast with mushroom white sauce! And it was soooooo great! They got good chose for dessert too!
21 September 2018 9:13
Good and friendly service. They have French and English menus. Some staff speak English as well.
$20 lunch special is a good deal - comes with a drink (beer, wine, or juice), entree, and a dessert. The menu and staff is very clear in what is included in the prix fixe, and what is additional cost.
The wild meat pie (+4$) is a lot richer than the regular meat pie, but much tastier.
Maple syrup pie is tasty but very sweet, the dollop of unsweetened cream on top pairs well.

Nice, relaxed ambiance. Cool wood carvings on the wall.
A block away from all the main touristy areas.
