A very warm restaurant with a super friendly staff who really take care of your needs. Pappad is served as an appetizer when you sit down and it tastes great. I had the lamb biryani which was beyond delicious while my partner loved his sweet butter chicken. The butter chicken gravy was heavenly and we loved just dipping our naan in it. Conveniently located on Saint Catherine, it is a beautiful restaurant with gorgeous photos all around. A perfect place to being your family and friends and enjoy the good hospitality:)
Ordered paneer masala and butter paneer along with chapati on Uber eats. Paneer masala was too oily, butter paneer was damn sweet. Chapati was great. Really disappointed to see the star of India (2.5 stars from my end) being like this.
My first day at this restaurant…. Among all Indian restaurants I found this is one of the best… the butter chicken and the naan was just awesome and the waiter’s behave was unbelievably good… love to go second time
The food was really delicious and flavourful. We ordered butter chicken, saag paneer and a beef curry. The staff were super kind and the ambiance (especially the music) was on point. Will definitely be going back there for more!
Ordered three main dishes today with rice and naan. All of them were very flavorful and had great texture! Everything was cooked wonderfully and the service was fantastic as well:) Highly recommend!
Our office orders food for lunch with nearby restaurants and I wanted to give this place a try since I enjoy Indian food.
I ordered the basic butter chicken just because I felt like something not so spicy today (I know, I know, it's butter chicken and not Vindaloo or something more authentic).
The bigger issue was that there was a dead ant in my butter chicken. It looked like something charred but it was a black ant. Instantly did not want to continue eating and felt ripped off.
The other less impactful issue was that it was not very tasty. It mostly tasted like butter and I had to really search for an onion or other flavors. Kraft dinner (bechamel sauce) came to mind when tasting it. The chicken was fine but the sauce was really bland and not great (which is half of the dish). I expected much more flavors (spices) than there were. I can't speak about the more authentic dishes like Vinaloo but it doesn't excuse the butter chicken being sub par since the price is the same. Maybe the ant died from the blandness.
Since I didn't go to the actual restaurant I don't know about the service (so not considered in the review) but so far the food experience has been less than desirable.
After this experience, it's a pass for me. I have concerns over the cleanliness of the kitchen now and am worried about trying more dishes.
I got food poisoning from the butter paneer. Restaurant needs to be more mindful of cross contamination and sanitization. I am convinced of this because I ate it first and then got very, very sick: cramping and excessive vomiting and diarrhea. Without understanding what the source of my illness was, my partner finished the leftovers of the butter paneer the following day and fell similarly ill shortly thereafter. We called to inform the restaurant and the person who answered the phone was gentle and replied by saying that they don’t use leftovers and that they’ve been in business for 55 years and that their name is important to them. They didn’t really address anything about what they do to avoid cross contamination and may not be aware that this is usually the source of food poisoning. Something to consider when ordering.
Went for first time. Received uncooked Chapati! N Only Potatoes instead of Allo-Methi (Potatoes with Fenugreek). Told the Server to change them n the guy behaved very rudely and told us to leave the restaurant. Very worst N unprofessional attitude by the server. Don’t even deserve 1 star!
You can't go wrong if you pick indian take out from Star of India. The staff are so lovely, they prepared a big order (5 separate dishes) for us on the spot even though it was close to closing time on a busy Saturday night. We only waited for ten minutes. Dining in is quaint and cozy, even if the restaurant is a little bit beat up. You won't care about it, though, when you taste the food:) Be forewarned, If you like it REALLY spicy, you need to ask.
Worst place ever. The workers are totally Racist and they straight up denied serving food to my friend because he didn’t order a full course meal and just wanted an appetizer instead.
This is probably my fourth time having Indian food at an authentic restaurant and I have to say, this place definitely captures India from an architectural standpoint. The waiter offered excellent service and made sure we were well taken care of. The food was great too, notably the green chutney that they served was the "star" of the show. My only issue is that the Chicken Tikka was a little dry on the inside. Otherwise, I would recommend investing.
I've been eating here for the past 2 years and the food is always tasty and rich in flavours. The portions are pretty big and the prices are more than decent.
This specific location has the best butter chicken there is in montreal. Firstly, the owner is too sweet and extremely kind. The staff is super hospitable and eating in person is a delight as the ambience is perfect. If you ask, they will make it spicy for you specifically. Their papar is also super light and crisp! 6/5 stars for me!
We went shortly after restaurants were allowed to open. I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Prices are extremely reasonable (menu à 2 pour 40$, avec dessert). Authentic indian vibe and cuisine, would go again.
I am an indian food lover. But this was the WORST Indian food I have tasted in my life. Their Dahl soup has no taste whatsoever (unless you consider yellow water is tasty). The butter chicken looked like a Kraft Dinner plate in which you put too much milk and the sauce stays liquid. The taste was nasty. Lamb Korma - taste not so bad but it has nothing to do with indian food. If you like burnt Naan bread, have some there - apparently it is their specialty! On the plus side, the white rice was delicious and it tasted like white rice.
It was bout 8-9 pm when we arrived. It took some time until they served us. It was cold, it didn't taste fresh. Food was not cheap so I never expected less than excellence. The guy who was serving us came to me and as he saw there was still some things I put left in the plate, he talked rude saying: Eat it! And it wasn't like in a kind way, it was rude. They looked like they wanted us to finally go cz we and another couple were last customers on the restaurant. I'm sorry but I had a really bad experience, I wouldn't go back.
Starters were delicious but the servings are small, Chicken Tandoori was great with a touch of spice. Deserts reminded me of India, only disappointment was chicken biryani. It got excessive oil and was mostly like chicken rice.
Best Indian restaurant I've ever tried, price is not that cheap but for the quality and service you get it's totally worth it. I go there pretty often and would recommend to everyone.
Horrible place to have indian cook. For starters the food was awfully cold and vegetables weren’t cooked properly and the most spectacular dish was the salad. They shredded a couple of onions and tomatoes and served it in a bowl. Looked awful tbh. Plus the waiter was giving us attitude like he is some bradd pitt. If indian food is all you’re looking for there are WAY BETTER restaurants than this
This place is like family! Two waiters went out in shoes & no coats IN JANUARY to help my mom to the car. One brought a shovel to clear the snow. And the food is tasty, good serving sizes, plenty of paneer in the saag paneer.
Someone told me this restaurant was one of the oldest Indian restaurants in the city, where anyone who was anyone would go and have a good time. Considering the inmense flavor and taste that goes into the food here, I would say I'm not surprised it's still standing. Fantastic service and one of the best butter chicken dishes I've ever had puts this place at the top of my list for Indian cuisine!
I am in love with Indian food, the spicier the better. I have tried a number of Indian restaurants in Montreal, but none have satisfied me until I came across this place. I now regularly frequent this establishment. They are able to make very spicy curry that tastes wonderful, and I've even gotten them to sometimes add a few extra spices for me. The food is wonderfully made, and the service is superb. They are always very attentive in ensuring your dining experience is good. Both takeout and eat in is worth it here!
Food is very tasty but the service is poor. Waiters were in a rush to close and they were rushing us to finish our dinner! The closing time 23: 00 is misleading, it means that the restaurant literally closes at 23: 00 not the kitchen so be carefull if you are arriving at 22: 30 as you would be finishing your dinner in a rush
Ordered the butter chicken, vegetable samosa, and tandoori chicken, with rice and salad. We ordered delivery, it was very late even though we are not that far. The salad was wrapped in tin foil, just shredded lettuce with a couple of tomato's, underwhelming. The dressing tasted like hot garbage. They gave me the wrong type of rice. The butter chicken had pork in it? It was cubed too big, way too much "sauce" if you can even call it that. It had no taste or structure. Something from a squeeze bottle. And the chicken WAS DRY.very very dry. Samosas were decent but not crispy, probably made out of house and microwaved. STAY AWAY DO NOT LET THESE 5 STAR RATINGS FOOL YOU, I WOULD RATHER EAT DOG DOO DOO.
Horrible food this taste nothing like what indian food is suppose to taste like the butter chicken was too salty and the food was cold.stay away.these higher ratings are very misleading
A favorite of mine for many years - here and the NDG location. Had an early supper recently on a Saturday evening. We were the only table when we arrived, but by the time we left there was a line-up. Reservations are a good idea for both locations. The lamb was off-the-charts for flavour and tenderness and they make the best butter chicken in the city.
Extremely poor service. Ordered for online through Golo and the waiters treated us so badly. We paid for a beef Curry and when we reached the restaurant they told us they can only give chicken curry because we did not mention any instructions. This is inspite of paying extra for the beef and ordering under the beef section in the app. The waiters started yelling and harrassing us and literally threw the food at us saying, " just the leave restaurant with whatever food we made". While I did like the quality of the food I got I am Extremely dissatisfied with the experience.
Étoile des Indes is a friendly, delicious place to go. I used to go here often for lunch back when I worked nearby. The service was always incredible and the workers are both helpful and friendly. They have lunch specials Monday-Friday that have never disappointed me, and their naan bread is the best I've had in a long time.
If you go in there expecting real good indian food, forget that. We order the classic chicken butter, chicken curry and the saag paneer and everything was just too sweet. When the waiter came to ask me if the food was good, I told him that the chicken butter was way too sweet and his respond was "because white people like that". Btw service was a bit bad.
One of the best Indian restaurants in Montreal! The location is pretty cute too. I’ve always had excellent service there: the stuff is great. The prices are good too. (Try the lunch specials!) But it is the food that keeps us coming back again and again. Butter chicken and vegetable pakoras are the best.
