We like to go here for their fabulous Sunday brunch. It is currently offered only once a month and it was pretty full, so make sure you call ahead. I hadn't been for a couple years and it was stopped during covid, so it was great to be back. Over Christmas the hotel has beautiful decorations so it was a great time to go. We had not really had snow until the day we went so being there with a lively snow falling, all the decorations, family, great food, magical.
Now it was not quite what it was a few years ago. They used to have more roasts and usually king crab, but still spectacular. It was my wife's birthday and the brought mamosa's and a nice tear to take home with a sparkler after. A walk around the grounds and town is a nice way to finish the visit or head to the pool and hot tubs (fee).

The cost is high but for the experience still worth it.

The location and transportation services provided are beyond poor. I travelled from London to attend a wedding at Chateau Montebello on Sunday October 8th.

At approximately 2: 00 PM on Sunday, I arrived at the hotel to attend the wedding and visited the concierge's office to arrange transportation from Chateau Montebello back to Montreal, where I was staying, with the intention of departing for the airport early on Monday morning. I was assisted by your concierge, Mr. Patrick, who promptly arranged for a chauffeur named Mario to transport me back to Montreal. This arrangement was confirmed via text message, with a quoted fare of $250. All seemed in order, I confirmed the trip and appreciated the efficiency of the initial arrangement.

At approximately 10: 30 PM, I left the wedding celebration upstairs and proceeded to the hotel's reception area to await the arrival of the designated chauffeur, Mario. I asked the front desk receptionist to please confirm if the driver was on his way and she made several attempts to contact Mario but received no response. The agreed-upon pickup time, 11 pm, came, and there was no sign of Mario. Patrick the concierge kindly reached out via text message around this time to check if everything was okay and told him about what was happening but unfortunately there was nothing at the time that he could do to rectify the situation. By this point I had been waiting for over an hour. Around midnight, another night manager became involved, displaying a regrettable lack of professionalism and courtesy. He informed me in a rather impolite manner that Mario was unaccounted for, advising me to abandon all hope of his appearance. When I asked for alternative solutions, the night manager simply stated, "I honestly don't know what to tell you. " Repeatedly, he offered no meaningful assistance, except to suggest that I should get a room at the hotel. This was not a viable option for me, as I had already made prior lodging arrangements in Montreal, lacked access to my luggage, and needed to be at my hotel in the morning for an international flight. By this point, it was way past midnight, and I had missed out on spending time with my dear friends at their wedding, for which I had journeyed from overseas to attend. After asking the night manager multiple times for assistance, he disclaimed responsibility, declaring, "it is not my problem" and advised me to seek another taxi service. I emphasised that I trusted the hotel to secure transportation and that the hotel had reassured me it would not be a problem, otherwise I would have looked for alternative arrangements earlier in the day. I implored the night manager to assist in rectifying the situation, as I had no cellphone reception and didn't know the area at all. Eventually, the night manager reluctantly called a taxi service in a nearby town. The taxi was secured at a rate of $250. I accepted this arrangement, and the taxi service verified that the driver was en route. Subsequently, the new driver arrived at the hotel at approximately 1: 30 AM, delivering me to my hotel in central Montreal around 3: 00 AM. The meter read approximately $290, but upon concluding the journey, the driver asserted that the full fare amounted to $380.20, citing an alleged deviation from Hawkesbury, a route of which I had no knowledge of.

In summary, this unfortunate sequence of events not only resulted in a significant waste of precious time that I could have spent with my dear friends at their wedding or preparing for my upcoming flight but also subjected me to mistreatment by your hotel's management. The exorbitant and unapproved charges I incurred during this ordeal were wholly unexpected. I would have never expected such treatment from such a reputable hotel as Chateau Montebello. Moreover, in a follow-up email exchange the hotel denied all responsibility over the services provided and refused to cover the difference between the fare originally quoted and the exorbitant price I ended up paying

The Fairmont Le Château Montebello is a stunning piece of Canadian history and offers a very unique getaway opportunity near Ottawa/Gatineau.

There are far more thighs to do here than I had realized, and the property is far more family-friendly than I had expected. I would love to do a little family getaway weekend here to have more time to explore the property and soak in some of the rich history.

10 August 2023 12:22
The property is gorgeous. Really pretty setting. The amenities are great. The food is OK. See below for details

Room - we stayed in the Champlain tower that’s newly renovated and we had a lake view. Very nice. You can exit through the lobby or back door that takes you straight to the lake.
Service - the staff everywhere is very nice. We had a slight hiccup at dinner one night but got rectified.
Food - the dessert is to die for. We did the meal plan. The breakfast was OK not fairmont std.it got BORING when we had to see the exact same spread 3 days in a row. There was no a la crate option provided. For dinner we were not told that the meal plan has a limited option of 4 items. Well if you don’t eat everything you are in trouble. My fam hates mushroom, don’t eat fish and I am vegetarian. There was steak, chicken breast, fish and a mushroom risotto. One night we requested them to make pasta and ghat was not good. The last night we had the BBQ and that was oh so yummy.
Amenities - we played mini golf, tennis, horse shoe, croquet all good fun. The outdoor pool is very nice. It’s kept at 81F. We did paddle boarding. They also have kayaks. They rent water scooters and pontoons which we did not use. They offer a 2 hour guided tours on 4X4 which we did not do.

We def will come back and want to experience Xmas here for sure. Thanks for a lovely stay team. Work on the food pls.

A very old hotel with a very old rustic feel, not for those looking for a modern city hotel feeling. Everything is in top shape, clean, with modern furnishings but this log hotel was built long ago. Rooms are a bit smaller than city hotels but if you're spending time in your room you're doing it wrong. The enormous lands and vast choice of outdoor summer and winter activities are why you're here.
30 December 2021 12:59
Have stayed at hotels all over North America. I think for a relaxing stay, Momtebello can’t be beat. Have stayed here maybe 6 times? Exceptional. The log cabin structure is intriguing, it gives you many options to do activities and nothing if you so choose. It is relaxing and interesting. There are many things to do, a full range from dog sledding to Land Rover school to you name it. I like it because it is a nice place to stay and has a relaxed atmosphere. You can read or talk or drink wine in front of the large fireplaces. You can have a great dinner or brunch and you can dress how you wish, but in such an elegant setting and the food is perfect there are many aspects which make it the best but for me, the staff is by far, the best I’ve seen. They are terrific and can go all out for the guests. Every time. Just a cool and relaxing spot.
26 December 2021 16:42
This is a classic hotel with a ton of history. Located in a beautiful part of the country, but a little difficult to get to. There are certain areas of the hotel that are a little tired, but you expect that due to its age. The log structure and central fireplace are fantastic. The staff were great at keeping the fires going. The lobby is just such a wonderful place to hang around and unwind. We were there between seasons, so activities were a little limited, but lots of hiking and we did the electric bike guided tour, which was a ton of fun. The guide was very good and provided as much of a history lesson about the area as he did providing us with a excellent ride. We enjoyed an outdoor campfire one evening. There was only one restaurant at the hotel which made it a bit limited, but it was an easy walk to town for other options. I think that they could have done more with the lobby bar, open it as a proper Starbucks for the morning and afternoon, along with the Starbucks' food offerings and then turn it into the alcohol bar in the afternoon / evening.

Overall, it was one of the great Fairmont experiences.
11 December 2021 9:28
Great getaway. Loved the trails thru the woods, bonfire, and sitting by the fireplace sipping an Old Fashioned.
29 November 2021 17:41
Service was exceptional as was the food. The 3 course lunch and 4 course dinner plates were all just a tad too big for me (my fiance finished my plates for me) so not a bad thing if you like to eat a really full meal. Staff did not hesitate to show you around. The bar was a little slow but, the bartenders gave every customer great service. Had a blast!
29 November 2021 13:13
28 November 2021 6:46
Older rooms, feels dated but the staff is incredible and there are SO many activities. The central fireplace in the lobby is incredible. Wonderful trails and hikes
21 November 2021 18:49
Simply gorgeous grounds. We did a day trip during the summer before the pandemic and we were thrilled with the area itself and the resort grounds. We did not stay but parked and walked the resort for future reference. It is private peaceful and serene. Outdoor snack bar delicious food and pools. Very romantic. The town itself has a nice area of shops and patios. Great for day tripping.
21 November 2021 13:50
20 November 2021 12:13
This place is very beautiful, we enjoyed our stay very much, there is a lot of history here and the architecture of the building is great. The restaurant in the hotel is overpriced and you don't get what you pay for, go into the city instead, we were very dissatisfied that there were no Sunday bunches, for the price you pay you should get something more. Aside form the restaurant, I would recommend that the hotel put together a package of available amenities as it seems that guests are left to their own to figure out what they can do on the premises. For example electric bike rides, no one ever told us this was available, and we definitely would have rented some. It would be nice if the front desk at check in let us know about these things. Overall, we did enjoy our stay, the staff is friendly and welcoming, the pool area and gym as well at the property grounds are worth the trip. Even though they say Montebello is haunted, the ghosts left us alone it seems.
13 November 2021 12:44
Spent a night at this beautiful place mid October. The staff was friendly, the food delicious and there was lots to do. It’s expensive but you get a lot for what you pay for. There are lots of trails, a beautiful pool with two hot tubs and the big beautiful room with a grand fireplace. I could have stayed there all day.
02 November 2021 13:59
I'm being generous with the two stars. The grounds were spectacularly beautiful, with biking, kayaking hiking trails, etc. And the pools and Health Centre were spectacular. However, the rooms were far from their description on the website. The ceiling was fling apart, the wallpaper was peeling in the bathroom, and there was black mold on the ceiling above the shower. The bed skirt, carpet, and curtains were outdated and the sofa was stained in many places. I am aware that there is a newly renovated section the the hotel, but as we wanted to stay in the more "rustic" part of the hotel, but I now regret that decision. There is a fine line between rustic and outdated, and this hotel has definitely crossed the line into outdated. The room also smelt vaguely of cigarettes, even though the hotel was smoke-free. The prices of the rooms are extremely expensive for the experience.

The food was quite good, but, again, very over-priced. We ended up going into town for a good amount of our meals, as it was cheaper and there were more options. We also went to the local grocery store and bought some food to eat in our hotel room (bread, granola, fruits, etc), and that worked perfectly.

The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, but overall, not a very good experience, and I would not stay here again.
24 October 2021 17:20
Quel endroit merveilleux!
12 October 2021 16:58
Beautiful log hotel on the Ottawa River with expansive grounds. The lobby area and bar - magnificent fireplace and wood architecture
21 September 2021 6:35
Very nice resort hotel and good service. The main hall of the building is amazing. The entire building is like a log house. However, the rooms are quite dated. I hope they have at least renewed the bathroom. The restaurants are nice and food is delicious. Bikes can be borrowed but they were not well maintained. First bike my son borrowed the chain fell off before we took off. Then the other ones we borrowed definitely can use some tuning. The environment is beautiful and the night time marshmallow roasting was great The pool was a dissappointment as the water quality was bad. It was very cloudy and can't see anything under water. I would have rated it 5 stars if not because of the things I mentioned above. Frankly for the price we paid, we expect it to be better.
21 September 2021 5:17
13 September 2021 4:13
Amazing getaway! We celebrated our wedding anniversary and absolutely loved resort experience with all beautiful nature surrounding hotel. We got complimentary room upgrade which was really nice treat from hotel management! Inside and outdoor pools were spectacular! We are planning to come back for winter season:) Thank you again for amazing holiday!
11 September 2021 0:55
This chateau is the biggest log Chateau in the world. We spend a few days here during the xmas holidays, its one of the most beautiful and warming experiences you will ever have. 3 days per year during xmas is a amazing, and even in the other 3 seasons its amazing. We are blessed to be only 45 minutes away so we do spend a day 3 or 4 times every year. Summer is amazing with horse back riding. Just come and spend a day its worth the trip. Merci beaucoup.
11 September 2021 0:18
Whether it spring, summer, fall or winter, it's a glorious place inside and out! I love the history, I love how it was created, the view is wonderful! It's like a dream come true
16 August 2021 20:09
08 August 2021 10:01
Hotel is beautiful. Staff friendly. However, staff is misinformed. Before booking my stay I called fairmont hotel and asked them what activities were opened. They specifically told me that the pool was open and the kayaks were available. When i got there, the staff at the front desk told me the kayaks are not yet available, and the pool is only open on the weekend. Very disappointed.
26 July 2021 12:31
Breathtaking old estate turned hotel. Feels like a snapshot of 50-100 years ago, but beautifully maintained and, more importantly, impecably serviced. Fancy without feeling hoity-toity. The grounds are wonderful, with so much to do. We only stayed a night as a getaway - next time we'll make a dedicated trip out of it.
17 July 2021 4:06
Great to be back at LCM! Great service all around, as always. Enjoying the brand new breakfast and dinner menus. Tried the spa today for a massage and RMT Bianca was great.
24 June 2021 22:25
15 June 2021 0:20
Wow.this is a great place, very relaxing, clean, engaging with lots of activities. Very close to nature. Took good care during pandemic. It was fun to explore this place and to know about the history of this amazing one in king log hotel.
01 May 2021 1:34
The place is nice, people were so helpful and very nice.
But my experience in the room was awful. It seems the old rooms not renovated are not that good with AC.
It was so hot and dry. The heat always working, can't turn to cold, and we were not able to open the windows. For the price that they asked for, it is really expensive and would give it 2 stars hotell if there were no pool. Plus, no bottle of water in the room.
The pool and spa experience was amazing.
I would think twice if i want to come back again.
11 April 2021 15:04
Place is nice and clean. Scenery is the reason you come. Outdoor activities are still offered but indoor is no longer possible with the pandemic.
03 April 2021 13:21
My wife and I came for Valentine’s weekend and had a great time despite the pandemic’s restrictions in place. We highly recommend.
02 April 2021 12:43
Had a wonderful relaxing stay here. We had a "River View" room on the 4th floor Champlain wing, that was really hard to see outside of due to its small size and height, but was still a delightful stay. We were upgraded to this room, but has we paid for it I would have asked to change rooms, so just an fyi. The upgraded rooms do have a bit less of a log cabin feel, so I would recommend those instead. We had a big comfy king sized bed which was all we truly cared about. Due to covid, the hotel was not very full which was just what we wanted. We went snowshoeing around the grounds, and relaxed by the fire for the 2 evenings we were there. It was everything we needed for this short staycation. Thank you to the hotel staff ️️
26 March 2021 23:36
We went for a husky sleigh ride right next to the hotel, an amazing experience! Afterwards we had a delicious lunch, thank you Stuart for your excellence service
08 February 2021 16:43
The plus: The rustic shack style is charming. Staff is eager to help and always kind. Excellent massage.

The minus: some need for renovation. The air conditioner and shower controls from the 80's, for instance. Some broken tiles. And the unexplainable decision of painting the wooden exterior black. Those things leave a little tarnish on the overall experience for a Fairmont.
07 February 2021 12:24
HONEST REVIEW
.
Firstly, I’ll start with the positives. The resort experience is world class. The recreational activities are outstanding. From the curling, the ice skating, the sleigh riding, dogsledding, pool, trails, among countless others, you will never be bored during your stay. The main entrance is breathtaking. Definitely a great place to escape with your family, especially if you have children. The food is excellent, and definitely lives up to their 4-star status.
.
However, onto the negatives. We stayed in the standard room. You must know that as this hotel is quite old, the non-renovated rooms are very dark, dated, and honestly quite dreary even, which is unworthy of a 4-star rated hotel. To our dismay, the room provided was very different than the one advertised on the website, but they did mention that on the description on the website. The room was very cramped. The size can be acceptable, however small compared to other luxury hotels.
.
You need to know prior to booking that there is no central air conditioning. There is a very dated air conditioning unit at the window which appeared to be at least 20 years old. Unfortunately, due to this, along with the small space, it becomes quite uncomfortable. The small room became uncomfortably hot despite setting the temperature to the lowest possible setting. The only remedy we could find was to open the window, which immediately made the room uncomfortably cold. Unacceptable for the price they demand. I strongly recommend to book the renovated rooms despite the additional cost, as it is well worth it considering the base cost of staying here.
.
Upon us bringing up our concerns the next day, the staff was very accommodating. We were immediately offered a luxury (renovated) room which resolved the issues we had. Overall, we did enjoy our time here and would consider returning and only staying in their renovated units. The difference is literally like night and day, when compared to the standard room.
14 January 2021 11:30
It was our second visit in a few short months. Its a great place in the summer but the Chateau comes alive in the fall and in the winter! The majestic fireplace and the Christmas decorations makes.it look like a fairy tale. Mrs. Dupuis at the restaurant took great care of my girlfriend and I. We are already planning our next visit. And we are also thinking about this place as a wedding venue
10 January 2021 21:24

Beautiful for visiting during the holidays, would have been better if the winter activities were open.
06 March 2019 0:21
Enjoyed our visit, little disappointed the tubing wasn't open, but there wasn't enough snow, however it did allow us to try curling and have a game of shinny that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Glad to see that renovations will be underway soon, this historic building is in need of some sprucing up. On the down side car parking is expensive if you are just visiting.
22 February 2019 2:21
21 February 2019 2:29
Love this place at Christmas time. Beautiful setting. Wonderfully attentive. The pool is real pool. Lots of History. Food is great. However it is pricey
20 February 2019 3:23
This place has a rustic almost magical charm. Beautiful scenery and very nice staff. Beds can use some updating. People also must remember this building is log cabin built many years ago so yes it is older and walls aren't very thick. I've been during summer and winter months and there's always something to do. Go explore this place!
18 February 2019 8:31
Good enough that my family keeps coming back but there's "always something". Last year it was serving Kraft dinner as "deluxe mac and cheese" in the restaurant. This year was the outdoor pool being at capacity for much of our stay (build a second pool, expand the existing one, whatever but you can't have families on a summer holiday turned away at the pool repeatedly).

On the bright side, the area is great with many amazing restaurants, park omega hiking and biking trails.

Rooms are fair, but could stand updates in some places (i.e. Carpets and washrooms).
12 February 2019 8:07
A great buffet and destination to visit, but would suggest a faster process to get in the dining area. Too much waiting in line to pass through checkpoints.
08 February 2019 20:37
It's a really Charming place.very welcoming the decor is really beautiful when you walk into the main hall it's just magnificent with the sixth fire pits you really feel like you can relax there and have a great time the staff are bilingual in both French and English that's really a plus
06 February 2019 19:32
Epically awesome New Year's brunch. The food variety and quality we're amazing. Atmosphere was good too. (Epic pricing too). Definitely worth doing once a year.
01 February 2019 18:17
31 January 2019 14:12
Amazing setting for a classic hotel. When you look at how large the structure is, it's amazing how it was built so long ago. Main lobby was decorated beautifully for Christmas. Looks like they are starting to do some renovations. The facility is showing its age and can use some updates. The fireplace in the main lobby is something to see.
30 January 2019 21:07
This was a magical getaway that I planned for my husband. It was everything I hoped for
We had a wonderful three days where the hotel was in full Christmas regalia. Hope to return next year for their New Year's Eve festivities.
22 January 2019 1:52
Nice and good services expected this hotel brand. Very unique experience in different Fairmont hotel. Didn't try golf the next day because we arrived late afternoon, all recreational booking staff was off.
20 January 2019 3:29

Quelle ambiance chaleureuse
03 January 2019 7:44
This place is very gorgeous, and I love the stone and fireplace. It is a beautiful winter getaway. The food however could have been improved. The dinner was sub par and not worth the price. I would recommend going elsewhere for dinner.
01 January 2019 20:05
A truly fantastic Christmas. The service was impeccable and the food was memorable. Every single member of the staff created an atmosphere that conveyed that the kids were appreciated and welcome. I have rarely experienced this and this is the aspect that i will remember the most as it allowed us to truly relax as we knew that our children were safe and happy. I should also point out the fact that everything was organized and that every aspect of our stay emphasized quality and elegance. The only thing that I would change is that I would have preferred for the hotel to have given gifts to children and families in need instead of giving gifts to our children. Cheers and Merry Christmas.

I got food poisoning after I told them I had dietary restrictions, which they ignored. The staff was ASTOUNDINGLY rude and refused to meet with us or take ownership for their actions. I have never had such appalling treatment at any hotel I have stayed in in my entire life.

Jennifer is completely wrong that the staff are in contact with us - in fact we waited all day to speak to a representative named Annie Piche, only to be told all day long she was in a 'conference call' (the staff themsevles said this was a lie).

She sent us an email at the end of the day to say how sorry she was to have been unable to meet us, we went back to the front desk because we were still there. We were asked to sit in the lobby, which we did, and instead of coming to meet us in person to discuss this problem, she had security come and tell us to leave for absolutely no reason (especially considering we paid the resort fee).

THEN, she told security to CALL THE POLICE if we did not leave, when all we were doing is sitting in the lobby!

Never have I been treated so shabbily, especially by a hotel we have frequented so many times over the years, and one that had made a serious mistake which resulted in my being sick throughout my stay.

All our years of happy memories are now tarnished forever, and I think Ms. Piche should be fired for her severe mishandling of this case.

It's a good thing they are currently renovating all the rooms. The room I was given was moldy, and had a funky smell. Make sure to ask for an updated room if available.

One of my favourite places to go with the family. Tons of sports and games to do. Great ambience. Fantastic food and drinks. The Sunday brunch is always is full of great treats for the kids and the grown ups.even though half the hotel is closed down for renovations you wouldn't know it at night the work stops probably towards 6 p.m. If you're a family with small children I would definitely recommend this hotel.

We go to Chateau Montebello 2 or 3 times per year. We have always experienced top notch service and have been exceedingly well treated as guests. However our last experience was rather bitter. We had reserved by phone for my wife's birthday and were offered a great price on an upgraded room. We had stated my wife's dietary sensitivities to wheat and auger and were assured that the restaurants and room service would be advised. We arrived to find a lovely chocolate cupcake as a gesture for my wife's birthday. Unwittingly she ate some and became quite ill. The kitchen confirmed that there was indeed wheat and sugar in the cupcake. The staff were very responsive and kind, however we felt this lapse (and a ruined evening) warranted a complaint to management. We were promised a call the following morning. The next day, we heard nothing and approached the front desk to be told she was in meetings and did not know when she would be available. We went for breakfast then back to the room. At this point we were approaching checkout time, and had appointments at the hotel spa. In the meantime I had received a "sorry I missed you" from the manager and we've covered your breakfast. We went back to the front desk in the hopes we would be able to see the manager, only to be told she was on a conference call. We had asked to find out when she would be done. Then the head of security came and told us to leave the hotel immediately or she would call the police! This was most shocking that a lapse that could have been life threatening and that customers would be treated in such a flip way. We have no complaints with the working staff who were exemplary, and we tip well for the service we received. However if this is the new attitude of Fairmont hotels and resorts you can be absolutely certain we will never patronize their establishments ever again.
