Gema Pizzeria

Je voulais essayer le Gema depuis très longtemps. J'y suis allé le 7 août. La nourriture et le spritz étaient très biens, mais le service et l’accueil n'étaient pas convenables. Je n’ai pas été servi par les serveurs.es (faire des prouesses pour être capable de commander un verre après plus de 20 minutes d’attente, difficulté d'obtenir l'attention d'un serveur pour commander, pas de poivre apporté lorsque demandé, etc.). Pas de bonjour en entrant et pas de merci en payant ou un même seul mot. On met la machine devant la personne, qu'elle paye et qu'elle s'en aille. L’assistante-serveuse qui était très gentille est la seule qui a été accueillante et serviable. J’ai bien vu que le personnel était occupé, mais le restaurant n'était pas à pleine capacité et j'ai remarqué que certains clients bénéficiaient de traitement de faveur et semblaient obtenir un servie A1, alors que d'autres non. Pourquoi? !? Cela ne donne pas du tout envie d'y retourner.

Prices were already high for the food offered but it’s gotten worse. The ingredients have dropped in quality and they put less of them on the pies. That’s just dishonest considering they’re already charging way more than you should. For example, a margarita at Heirloom (similar restaurant in the city but better) is 16$ and they’re charging… 19$. Also, if you go there during the day you can see why they barely have the lights on at night: this place is not only overrated, it’s also dirty,

We ordered the Emilio and the Capriciossa. The Emilio was one of the most disappointing pizzas we've had. There were 4 sad pieces of meat, unnoticeable amount of cream, and filled with mushrooms. I might as well have sautéed some mushrooms myself, added it on some bread, added some ham and got it to taste no worse than what we were given. The capriciossa was better, but it'd be an achievement if they made something worse.

Les pizzas sont copieuses, authentiques, avec des ingrédients de qualités. Nous avons commandé des pizzas assez simples mais quel délice!
L'endroit est très cozy, également chaleureux grâce au personnel.
On y retournera!

Nous avons eu une très belle expérience chez Gema! L'ambiance était très agréable. The Food also was perfect! Je vous le recommande fortement.
Ils ont une glace à la vanille comme dessert et je vous le recommande aussi.

Tout était au top. Du service à l'assiette, de loin la meilleure pizza de Montréal, aussi petit clin d'oeil pour la menthe sur la 4 fromages, une découverte qui m'a beaucoup plu.

Tout était excellent. Cependant mettre le pourboire par défaut à 18% sur la machine c'est un floué le client. Oui il est toujours possible de faire autre mais dans la précipitation on choisit le défaut qui est censé être 15% comme partout ailleurs.
Je trouve cela malhonnête de mettre 18% par défaut. Tout le monde fait fasse à des hausses de coûts mais faut pas prendre les clients pour des tirelires sans fond.

The BEST pizza I have had, ever. Staff is extremely friendly, wine selection is great, outdoor seating is perfect in every way. Highly suggest.

Super endroit avec des super pizzas. On sent bien que la pâte est faite maison. Le seul bémol, le volume sonore.

De vraies pizzas italiennes faites avec des produits de qualité. Ils ont également de très bons vins pour accompagner le repas!

Pizza qui n’ont pas vraiment de saveur pour le prix mais très bien pour la photo. Un manager odieux et qui prend les clients de haut, je ne recommande clairement pas.

We went to pizzeria Gema, as we read online it is the best pizza in Montreal. So we went with high expectations, unfortunately it did not meet our expectation. Don't get me wrong very good pizza but is it the best, that is a hard NO.

It has many selections of pizza from white sauce pizza to tomato sauce. Great selection of desserts, small but cozy ambiance. What really bothered me though was the noise. A lot of people talking and this very loud music, this made me not hear our face to face conversation and had to keep speaking loud.

Not a bad experience but not the best either.

Not the best pizza in town, but still very delicious and worth a try

I went to Gema on the night of Saturday, January 19 after a friend recommended it. I made reservations weeks prior through the website. It was very easy and appreciated having that tool. We got there and the place was packed, but our seats were ready and waiting for us. The food was great. We were 2 people and each got a different pizza, no drinks other than water. The service was great as well. Ordering dessert was inevitable, especially after reading the description and seeing what it looked like on other people's tables. The price was reasonable and will definitely be going back! Thanks for the great experience.

Very disappointing experience. The longest I have ever waited for service in a restaurant. Around 2.5 hours start to finish. My fresh mozzarella appetizer took around an hour to arrive. The pizza almost another hour. Wait staff was understaffed and kitchen totally lost the plot. For a restaurant that mostly serves pizza and non complex appetizers there isent much of an excuse. Asked for some chilli oil and they couldn’t even bring it to us on time to finish our food. We ended up going to the kitchen to ask for it directly. Food was decent, although perhaps a bit overpriced. I would not return ….

While the pizza is good, the dining layout is very cramped and loud. Some tables seemed to get all of the servers' attention, while we were mostly ignored - my empty beer glass was taken away quickly as we started eating, without asking if I wanted another.

Very hip and trendy atmosphere…food was DELICIOUS, wine menu was extensive. We had the Crudo pizza- I have never tried something like that before. We felt taken care of even though it was really packed. Would go back.

It’s an okay place with good service and cozy ambiance. But the space is a bit small (and in turn the tables are not very well spaced) and the pizzas are not that authentic.

We are from Toronto and paid this spot a visit with my wife and two children. From the greeting to the ending the customer service was superb! The food was amazing and some of the best pizza in Montreal. Never tried frozen custard but it was so good! I went on Saturday October 23rd in the evening and the manager on duty was phenomenal. He really deserves a raise as he treats all the customers with impeccable kindness along with the staff. Defintiely will stop by again when in Montreal.

They show no respect to delivery guys, they force them to wait next to the trash dumpsters at the back of the restaurant

Service: Dine-in. Bien installés et staff sympa. Correct niveau rapidité.

Food: Les pizzas n’étaient pas aussi bonnes qu’attendues. Celle aux anchois ne sentait rien et il n’y en avait aucun donc on a demandé et le serveur nous a répondu que c’était directement avec la pâte ou autre mais ça ne sentais pas et ca aurait quand même valu la peine d’en mettre dessus pour le goût et le rendu!

Prix: Pas vraiment convaincu pour le rapport qualité prix!

Nous étions allé manger sur place à 2 reprises, et avions été très satisfaits. Hier à l'occasion d'une réunion de famille, je suis allé chercher 8 pizzas. Malheureusement 4 sur 8 avaient leur croûte complètement brûlée, 2 autres moyennement brûlée, et 2 avec cuisson correcte. Ce fut une grande déception. Lorsque l'on paie 24$ pour une pizza le moins que l'on puisse espérer c'est que la cuisson soit correcte.

Their passport app wasn’t working properly and even when we showed the vaccination passport they guy at the entrance made us feel we were liars, we told them that the code had worked before plenty of time and then they tried again and worked! At that moment I left cause one thing is they need the passport but treating your clients as liars is just not ok. The code had even the date we got the 2nd vaccine the names

Great staff that helped accommodate my food intolerances and answered any questions I had- food/wine was S O G O O D 10/10 recommend the Vetri (pizza with the buffalo milk cheese, mortadella and pistachios)

Edit: went again (make sure to make a reservation before you come!) and was seated outside, got the same thing and food was so good the bees were buzzing around me

Great service! Octopus salad appetizer was phenomenal…. Pizza was good but not as good as it once was. The sauce was acidic and tasted more like a pasta sauce than a Neapolitan pizza sauce. Still really good.

Réservation recommandée très Populaire avec raison, jolie terrasse, nous avons choisis 4 différentes pizzas (grand choix offert pour tous les goûts), chacun es un régal. Ne pas oublier de se garder de l’appétit afin de prendre leur cossetarde glacée servi en affogato un délice préparé par Félix notre serveuse.

Some of the best pizza I’ve ever had. The crust was a bit too thin though, and I found that the pepperoni was falling off right when I picked up the pizza to eat it. Taste was perfect though, highly recommend this place if you want good pizza.

The ice cream here is wonderful. Technically frozen custard, whether you choose to top the velvety vanilla or the delightfully surprising flavour of the "moment" - with fresh delicious cherries or drown it in espresso ; you can't go wrong with this frosty gem.

Wonderful little authentic pizza place on a cute corner of Little Italy. The pizzas are classic Roman style, with a creative curated menu. The frozen custard was divine.

Busy for a Saturday night but the atmosphere still felt inviting. Waiter was rude. Asked a simple question about the food where he took offence and told me if I didn’t like it I could cancel the order and “ciao” some French dude from France. Excuse me? He brought me the bill had the audacity to touch the Interac machine as I had it in my hands and told me to tip 0$. So in fact I did. Never ever going back, making sure that those I know never go either. You can get food and better service elsewhere. Don’t waste your money!

FOOD WISE = The Best of the Best! Trust me. I’ve only been there 3 times due to my scheduling, and because it is pretty hard to get parking in that area. I suggest BMW. Bus, Metro, walk

Super bonnes les pizzas, et le quartier est fantastique, sans aucuns doutes. Sauf que, 60 piastres pour deux pizzas à emporter avec taxes et un peu de tip (tipper sans service, vraiment?), bref, c'est juste trop cher.

Pizzeria digne de ce nom. Toutes les pizzas goûtées à notre table on été appréciées.

On a séparé les boulettes en entrée, très bien réussies.

Les drinks essayés étaient très bien fait. (Monte ginger & Bourbon sour)

Le vin: TERRE SICILIANE SYRAH, Halleluja, IGP 2017 - 16 au verre 76 la bouteille était très bon. Et bien choisi par le serveur.

D’ailleurs, le service était rapide et courtois.

Le seul « downside »: Le son de la musique à l’intérieur est vraiment fort. Et croyez moi je suis du genre à aimer le mode restaurant avec ambiance de bar, mais on avait souvent de la difficulté à s’entendre. On aurait avantage à le diminuer un peu!

The restaurant is nice, finally accepting customers both outside and inside and the staff is friendly and helpful!
I usually eat the 1889 pizza, which is for me a good quality/price option at $17, but this time I wanted to try something different and went for the pizza of the month (bacon, smoked provola, crushed pistachios and arugula sprouts).
The pizza was too much burned. Don't get me wrong, I like very well cooked pizza, but this one was too much. I was expecting more than a few pieces of bacon here and there and I couldn't even detect the smoked provola. Last thing, too much oil all over it - really not needed.

I've know about Stefano Faita and Michele Forgione since out of culinary school and for some time before. They are one of the 'empires' of the food scene in Montreal and Little Italy. They have 3 well known spots called Impasto, Chez Tousignant and the one we will be chatting about here which is Pizzeria Gema.

I am I big fan of the two locations Gema and Tousignant, I've still yet to go to Impasto but I'm hoping real soon! What I love at these spots is everything is trying to be sourced locally in the community and made in house. From the doughs, the pastas, the sauces (which they sell in IGA's across MTL) even the hot dogs and buns they make in house. There isn't much they don't make or try to make these guys! It's pretty impressive.

Now getting down to the pizza. I wanna start by saying the pizzas at Gema are in my top 3 of best in MTL and I'd almost give it the title but it's so close with 2 others I still haven't decided hahah.

The Impasto was the first pizza that I got their and I have to say it delivered. The dough was perfect, wasn't soggy and had a nice texture and crust to it giving a crunch threw out. The Porchetta was amazing and tender, not to salty. The smokeyness of the Caciocavallo really gave threw but wasn't at all overwhelming. Salsa Verde lent some freshness and acidic nots to the pizza which complimented it really well and the pickled peppers gave a nice kick.

Terrible neighbor. I constantly experience customers parking in the adjacent bike lane and prohibited area to get their orders, even eating them in the car! You should bother looking out the window and refuse to serve until they find a real parking spot.

En resto, cette pizza, bien que très chère, est délicieuse. Malheureusement, à la livraison la pizza est froide et sèche. Même après l'avoir réchauffé je n'ai jamais retrouvé les saveurs. Ce n'est pas DUTOUT la même chose. J'ai même quasiment jeté la pizza. Personnellement, je ne vais plus jamais commander.

Take out service could be better, but the quality of the pizzas is excellent and definitely makes up for it. Haven't been in the sir down part of the restaurant.

Most of the times "little Italies" around the world are a huge disappointment as they have diverged quite a bit from the Italian tradition. I was surprised it is not the case in Montreal; even if the gracious young lady at the counter did not speak Italian, the product - pizza - was quite interesting and honestly surprisingly good. This pizzeria does not claim any particular style but seems inspired by Neapolitan pizza. I believe with minor tuning of the dough and just a little more skill at the oven this place has potential, as the creativity is definitely there. Blown away by the "Stefano" pizza. Forget the "Capricciosa", OK but below par toppings, damn those "woody" artichokes. Several other good ones

Pizza was all saucy that the dough was floppy and soggy. The pizza was just wet. Never seen this in my entire life. Couldn't enjoy it. I was very disappointed because so many people were hyping up about this place. Will definitely come back to see if it was just a one time mistake.

Off the beaten-path of Montreal's little Italy, Gema is reputed for its pizza and ice-cream. It sits on a street corner near other restos and cafes, in a quaint residential area. Food can be ordered through a window for take-out, or to enjoy on their terrasse.

Franchement très déçus! Nous sommes habitués aux pizzas du 900 ou de Fiorinello, on voulait en essayer une autre étoilée. Jolie en apparence mais croûte peu gonflée, pâte dure, peu de saveur. La crudo a 24$. C'est exagéré pour une pizza avec prosciuto, pousses de roquette et noyée de balsamique. L'autre pizza avait supposément des rapinis.
Chers propriétaires, goûtez à votre pizza svp. Ceux qui la font manquent de finesse.

Une bonne et grande pizza dans un resto charmant! Plusieurs choix de pizza disponibles. Essayez le dessert-costarde, alternative originale à la gelato. Une pizzeria de quartier où il fait bon y retourner.

One word to discribe gema: MEH. The pizza is way too droopy (cant hold it and ply it in two) dough doesnt really bounce back. Too much sauce on it

Food was great. The pizzas are delicious. The beet salad was so tasty. Service was ok. Not very attentive.

Best pizza in Little Italy and probably in Montreal. No900: not enough toppings. Stella: too much topping. Napoletana: the crust cannot hold the toppings, too thin. Il Focoialo: Croat/topping ratio is off. Adamo: great for a slice but you want the whole thing. Elena: looks good haven’t tried. Melrose: limited options.

P.s. Gema is even good for take out. 5/5.

Très déçu de ma première expérience ace restaurant!

Premièrement le serveur est cyber dépendant à son cellulaire. J’attendais qu’il quitte l’écran de son téléphone pour qu’il prenne ma commande. Lebutnlest pas de lui nuire dans son travail mais qu’il apprenne, mais moi ça ne m’inspire pas.

Deuxièmement, j’ai demandé une pizza végétarienne et il m’a fait une suggestion car la majorité des Pizza sont carnivore, enlever le jambon d’une de ses propositions.

Je lui ai demandé s’il ajusterait le prix car si tu enlève la viande, c’est ce qui coûte plus cher, tu vas offrir quelque chose d’autre, plus d’un légumes ou autres afin de satisfaire le client à $18 la pizza. Tu ne vas pas lui jeter une réponse sèche que vous ne changer pas le prix. Vous allé être plus professionnel que ça!

J’ai commandé la première alors qu’au fond de moi j’avais envi de lever les pieds après la réponse que j’ai obtenu de la part du serveur.

Finalement j’aurais dû m’écouter, à plusieurs endroit la pâte n’était pas cuite complètement.

Trop mince votre croûte! La sauce est bonne mais je ne paierai plus pour cela.

Ha! J’ai demandé qu’on ajoute plus de basilic frais ce que j’ai apprécié sauf que vous devez enlever les queues, le couper grossièrement et l’étendre sur la pizza (faire une belle présentation selon moi) autrement ça fait garochee, pas très bien présenté même si certaines personnes aiment ce type de présentation. Ne mettez pas des feuilles brunes non plus, j’lui eu des feuilles brunes.

Without a doubt my all time favorite pizzeria. Love the cool vibe, friendly staff, affordable good wine, the topping choices and proportions are on point and that pizza dough is just pure perfection. I can’t recommend enough.

Pizza délicieuse, les ingrédients sont frais et la pâte est excellente. Nous avons été servis super rapidement. Petit bémol, comme dans beaucoup de pizzeria la musique est très forte, ce qui oblige tout le monde à parler fort.

Un de mes endroits favoris. Bien meilleur que la pizzeria juste à coté qui est trop grasse selon moi. Ici c'est parfait et le gateau au fromage avec cerises est juste un delice!

Excellentes pizzas dans petite Italie. Service impeccable, serveurs souriants et agréables, peu d'attente, pizza à manger sur place ou à emporter. Les pizzas sont délicieuses avec des ingrédients frais et une croûte mince. Les desserts aussi sont trés bons. Bon rapport qualité-prix pour une pizza, c'est parfait!

Habituellement, je n'aime pas la pizza. Quand je vais là-bas, c'est de la pizza incroyable. Rien à voir, c'est tout simplement excellent

Le resto dont il faut être le genre

Remarquable pizza à l’italienne que celle de Gema Pizzeria. Créative et raffinée, elle peut rivaliser avec les meilleures pizzas haut de gamme concoctées à Montréal. Les calmars frits y sont également apprêtés à la perfection. Mais n’entre pas qui veut dans ce resto intime! Nous nous y sommes présentés un midi de tempête, récemment. Heureusement, il restait une table libre. Déception: le serveur nous affirme qu’elle est réservée, mais qu’il pourrait peut-être nous dénicher deux places au bar. Proposition que nous acceptons. Trois minutes plus tard entre un autre couple, sans réservation. Le serveur demande alors à son collègue si la table est toujours libre. Comme personne ne l’a encore réservée, l’heureux couple peut en profiter. Faut croire qu’ils étaient du genre de la pizzeria!

Les pizzas sont exceptionnelles et l acceuil est très chaleureux. Nous en avons fait notre rituel du samedi midi. Un incontournable.

La pizza exactement comme celle que l'on mange en Italie! La meilleure à Montréal. Réservation pas obligatoire, mais fortement suggérée.

Just the best pizza in town. It’s a busy place, so get a reservation or walk in at 5pm sharp and get a table for 1 hour. (Enough time to share a pizza with the kids). During summer, order your pizza to go and eat outside on their picnic tables.
Their pizza are delicious. It’s a must go.
