Hotel Universel Montreal

I love the staff very nice people always smiling this is my 3 times coming there and I don’t mind coming back again, thank you well done.

Pros:

1. Really great location only 15 mins away from metro

2. Pleasant and responsive staff for any issues

3. Gorgeous indoor pool area made for a nice warm up during cold nights

4. Free parking was nice considering the costlier alternatives

5. Very atmospheric and warm bar in lobby

Cons:
1. Not really the fault of staff, but the elevator broke after my first night and was out of commission for the rest of my 4 day stay, making my options either to walk to the furthest end elevator, or stairs

2. The window was leaking due to failing insulation caulking which caused water to pool on the window ledge and humidify the glass. The trim on the window was peeling off the ledge from water destroying its adhesive

3. Washroom sliding door doesn’t lock, and the toilet paper is placed at the opposite end of the room, so unless making a verbal agreement with other roommates to not go to the washroom, privacy was difficult.

In all was worth the cost I paid, but would probably go elsewhere if a cheaper alternative with free parking came up

Loins de tout mais l'hôtel est parfaite, très bon prix. Stationnement sous-terrain et tout prêt d'une station de métro, idéal pour prendre un verre downtown ou au Parc Jean Drapeau et ne pas perdre son permis

The rooms are standard, but the hotel is very loud. People slamming doors and screaming in the hallway at night. The location is close enough to the metro but still a bit of a walk unless you take a bixi. Overall the price was fair for what we got, but not an amazing experience.

It was more of a motel than a hotel. Its' best features are the location and the fact that it has an outdoor pool. However, the sheets had blood and some oily substance on them. The tub had some hair leftover as well.

The hotel staff was a strange mixed bag. The majority of the desk staff was polite and helpful but there was one with a hijab and glasses that was certainly not. When I asked her about the gym she told me it was closed but suggested it was fine since I would have a membership at the local gym anyway. Huh? Why exactly would you assume I have a local gym membership when I'm staying at a hotel particularly with a gym that is supposed to be open? When I said as much she acted exasperated as if that was nonsensical.

There was a maintenance guy that angrily insisted on giving me a long history of where the pool was when I had to ask him twice because he didn't explain it well the first time and it was literally behind the door next to us.

The service isn't great if you're staying for a couple of nights. Hotels don't necessarily change sheets every night but no fresh towels either? I wasn't going to sleep on the stained sheets so I had to ask the same rude receptionist for new sheets. But of course she did not let me know they would only be changed after I left. So I had to keep asking for them then and had to change them myself.

Do better.

It was a family vacation last July 10-12 and we are not happy about that the room we got has no microwave, there is coffee maker but there’s no enough k-cups to use and looks not so clean we didn’t use it, the small fridge is filthy so dirty, you will not notice the dirty side of the fridge because it is enclosed inside the cabinet and looks the cabinet is rotten already. We didn’t bother to put our drinks and water because the compressor itself giving hotness around the cabinet so we tried to open the cabinet to give air around the area. Another thing, two beds only one bed has comforter doesn’t make sense.
Make sure before you put your items in the table, drawer you disinfect with wipes coz it’s dusty and sticky. Not happy about it. The back door exit/entrance, the stairs is way too dirty and never park in the back side parking lot coz it’s not enough lights and kinda scary in that side, looks like something might happen to your car just be careful. So our feeling we always park in the parking area closed to the main entrance of the hotel to be in the safe side.

J'ai séjourné à cet hôtel durant la fin de semaine et la chambre n'était pas propre. Il restait des habits/ couettes des anciens clients dans les tiroirs. La lavabo était brisé et les draps étaient tachés. Pour le prix qu'on paie, on devrait avoir un meilleur service et au moins un petit déjeûner. Je suis vraiment déçue.

On a eu une chambre a coté d'une salle avec un party. La musique c'est fait entendre toute la soirée avec des va et vient dans les portes menant au chambres.

We gather here every year for our Montreal area 87 AA convention. The hotel is clean, well appointed and supportive. Along with a bilingual convention the hotel was booked solid, right near the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

Je recommande aux prochains clients de ne pas accepter les chambre dont le numéro fini par 10 (110-210-310-410-510-610-710) parce que la chambre fait dos aux machines à liqueurs et à glace. Le bruit que ces machines font, est dérangeant la nuit. à part cela nous avons eu droit à un excellent service tant de l'hôtel que du restaurant.

Service à la clientèle qui laisse à désirer - zéro drap pour le lit, la couverture étais sale, un des draps contour étais brûlé donc troué, une partie de là tapisserie tombais sur le mur et ils ont caché par des rideaux, douche sale, on as demander des couvertures de plus et les couvertures étaient sales collantes - l’eau de la piscine n’étais pas translucide donc encore ici un manque d’hygiène. On as réservé une chambre à 250$ Mais qui en valais 70$. Je ne recommande pas du tout

Un bon hôtel pour suivre des conférences, bons services, on avait le choix de manger du poisson ou du poulet et boissons à volonté (café, eau gazeuse, boissons gazeuses, etc)

Not my worse experience but not my best experience either. The hotel is wonderful looking and the staff is friendly, and the location is great. But the room was filled with dust or dust mites, even the bed.
Well as a update we ended up losing a ring in our room and they were kind anough to go through the trouble of finding and sending it to us.makes our complaints moot!

Overall our stay was okay. The room was nice and tidy, but the walls/door do not block any sound. I had to listen to my neighbor having a shower around 10pm. Also, there was a wedding in the building and I could hear people talking and laughing as they went to their rooms in the middle of the night.

We couldn't try the food as we were told room service was not available (only when we tried to order) due to the private event in the building. Yet, when we woke up in the morning room service trays were outside some of the doors. The restaurant was one of the reasons we chose this hotel in the first place.

The indoor pool was the highlight of the stay.

Staff was very nice and professional.

I would recommend asking if there are any events if you choose this hotel as the quality of the stay may be lower if there is.

Personnel à l'accueil très moyen, manque d'entregent, on dirait du service à la chaîne. Le restaurant manque d'employés ce qui affecte la carte des menus qui à été revues à la baisse, donc ne regarder pas le menu sur internet car vous serez aussi déçu que moi. Ils dissent offrir le service de restauration au chambre mais c'est faux, il ne le font plus mais l'annonce encore dans les chambres. La piscine intérieure est salle et brouillé par manque d'entretien. Bref ça fait longtemps qu'il aurait dû être déclassé à 3 étoiles cette hôtel. Point positif les employés du resto font leurs possible pour rendre l'expérience agréable compte tenu de la situation.

Decent rooms, decent prices. We didn't get a chance to use the amenities. All of the staff we spoke with were fluent english speakers.

Très déçu de mon séjour. Le wi fi ne fonctionne aucunement. Si vous avez prévu travailler, ce n’est pas un bon hôtel pour vous.

C'étais propre, j'étais là pour une rencontre dans une salle du sous-sol et il y avait des genre de mouches à fruits. Le service et la nourriture en salle à manger était très bien.

Hotel was average, very dated. Room needs to be renovated. AC made noise all night. I will not be returning.

Déçu personnelles a l'accueil très gentil mais les chambres même les couloirs avec des tapis plain de tâches les chambres sont pas propre négliger tout es vieux comme meuble l'odeur de humidité règne dans la chambre la moisissure sur les rideaux les murs tâcher de je sais pas Trops quoi mais sais deplesant les matelas son dur la déco es moche vieux comme la terre et en demanche lavabos casser si tu frotte ta main a l'intérieur tu peux te couper et sais pas juste dans une chambre a l'arrivée nous avions eu nôtres chambre et avons faire pars de barré de savon rentrée dans les grillage de l'aire conditionné d'une odeur de cigarette et la chambre était mal propre alors le monsieur nous a changer de chambre mais la deuxième avais des cassure similaires mal propre aussi au lieux de la nourriture partout sur les bureaux elle avait de la moisissure sur les rideaux des déchirure au draps usure ect.les murs avais plain declabusure de cher pas quoi

Just an unpleasant experience heighten by the staff's attitude of annoyance with guests.

Cons

Had to compete with non hotel guests for parking. Almost couldn't park at the hotel one night. Saw people in the parking lot sitting in spots to save for just partiers.

Sliding door to the bathroom is just weird not very private.

Getting breakfast at the restaurant was odd. Our waiter seemed annoyed anyone was there in the morning. He rushed through our order as fast as he could and didn't give us a chance to ask for salt and pepper before dashing away to another table. Mind you the restaurant wasn't even busy, only a few tables had anyone at the time.
Also our food came way to quickly that it was obviously microwaved.

The bar was the worst though. The first night we were there we went down at 8 to enjoy a drink and chat only to find that the bar was blasting music as loud as possible. Wasn't really in the mood to pretend that this tiny bar was a club on a Thursday night so we left.
We tried our luck again there the next day. After the waiter got our drink order and first round he just never came back to our table. And we waited for 45+ minutes before just going up to him to pay and leave.
On our third try (yeah shame on us, at this point for trying) we went down well before closing or last call and the bartender just looked at us and said "no we're done for the night".

Pros

J'adore, le personnel est poli et très courtois, belles chambres et les piscines j'ai beaucoup apprécié mon séjour.

Nous avons réservé cet hôtel en raison de la proximité avec le biodôme et le jardin botanique. Premier séjour en famille avec notre bébé de 2 mois et notre fille de 1 an et demi. Quelle déception. J'avais choisi l'option chambre prestige qui sois disant était rénovée. Totalement faux! Annonce trompeuse! Loin de la réalité. La chambre est désuète et vieillotte, les lits sont petits et inconfortables. Et attendez de voir la salle de bain: une horreur. De la moisissure, des tâches, des morceaux de céramique cassés, des joints inexistants et noirs. Nous avons été changé de chambre après la première nuit. On est passé du 5e étage au 4e étage (en réalité c'est plutôt un deuxième étage car la réception est juste en dessous). Nouvelle déception: la chambre est aussi pire et la salle de bain est encore plus répugnante. On a également pas dormi de la nuit. La musique était tellement forte. Ils ont soit disant une politique de tolérance zéro après une certaine heure sous peine d'expulsion mais c'est entièrement faux car les deux nuits il y a eu du vacarme jusqu'à 3h et 4h du matin. Impossible de dormir, très mal insonorisé. Ce n'est pas du tout l'idéal avec des enfants en bas âge. On en a fait des hôtels en Amérique du Nord et en Europe et c'est de loin le pire qu'on ait eus! Nous sommes très déçus surtout pour une chambre à 200$ la nuit. Par contre, service à la clientèle très professionnel, les deux femmes qu'on a eues à la réception étaient très gentilles et compréhensives et on a eu une compensation pour s'excuser de l'état de la chambre. Mais au final, nous ne recommandons pas du tout cet hôtel!

The hotel is near the Botanical Gardens, the Olympic Stadium, Saputo field-all in walking distance. The closest Metro station is Viau. We had breakfast at their restaurant and they were good and prices were reasonable. We checked in early and we were given a big room (101) which overlooks the parking lot in the back of the building. It's clean, quiet and very roomy. We would go back to this hotel again because of its location and staff friendliness.

Hotel was nice and clean, front staff were very nice and accommodating when we arrived early and offered early check in.

Très déçu: chambre pas propre avec un bout du tapis arraché. Piscine intérieure très petite avec une eau brouillée et sans surveillance. Par contre, très bien située pour une visite au Biodôme. Je n'y retournerai pas.

BEWARE- NO INFECTION CONTROL MEASURES are being followed: PUBIC HAIR (tiny) hair all over the bed sheet (see pictures. We checked in for a wedding at room 127 and found hair on the sheets and reported to the staff. They did not even acknowledge the health and safety concerns and rather allowed us to inspect Room 111 with their staff. Staff member also witnessed hair on the sheets in the room as well. We asked him to take a picture and which he did. After several calls to the main receptionist, they again offered clean sheets despite the RISK of infection given the current situation. We paid $515 for 2 nights because of a wedding we were attending plus, we were out of luck to find accommodation elsewhere last minute since it’s the long weekend. The main reception -supervisor did not acknowledge any of the HEALTH and SAFETY concerns that were raised and moreover, she was not following PPE protocol (MASK was not covering her nose). We will be complaining to public health agency and booking.com and to hotel regulatory oversight bodies. Save yourself and do not stay at this disgusting place.

Friendly front desk staff. Nice and clean room. Comfortable bed. Free parking. Free wifi. Cool location being across from the Olympic Village buildings.

Hotel is nice good service.
Internet is extremely slow and intermittent couldn’t even watch videos longer than 10 min without buffering or losing connection.

L’accueil était assez froide. La chambre est plutôt confortable, très propre! L’aire climatisé fait beaucoup de bruit… elle part et s’arrête constamment. Lors de notre réservation il étais indiqué un déjeuner inclus. Nous avons donc appeler la réception pour nous faire dire très froidement que le restaurant étais fermer. Dans le document il étais clairement indiqué crevice au chambre et resto ouvert de 7 à 22h… bref j’ai faim

Lost and found department are not reliable. Untrustworthy staff will steal your things if you don’t claim forgotten things after check out. Receptionist didn’t even try to help and even agreed when I said that perhaps one of their employee stole my belongings.

Accueil très décevant: aucune indication sur le fonctionnement de la piscine intérieure ou extérieure, les repas inclus, les heures d’ouverture du « restaurant »… Lits très durs. Présence de chiens près de notre chambre qui ont jappé et gratté les 4 nuits où nous avons été présent. Malgré de nombreuses requêtes; aucune action concrète n’a été prise… Insonorisation faible voir inexistante; merci à la personne qui a claqué sa porte jusqu’aux petites heures du matin, je t’aurais bien donné un cours de fermeture de porte! S’il y a un mariage et que vous êtes coincés dans l’hôtel, amenez-vous des bouchons! Bref, excessivement déçue, je ne recommande pas du tout!

Malgré que l'hôtel affichait complet et que c'était le 31 décembre, nous avons reçu un service rapide, courtois et plus que poli. Que ce soit à la réception de l'hôtel ou au bar. De plus, le staff veille à ce que nous puissions bien dormir car nous n'avons pas été dérangé par les autres clients. Aussi, tout est très propre, ce qui est très important. Merci beaucoup pour notre veille du jour de l'an et bonne année 2019!

Les chambres sont bien et le ménage est bien fait par contre le piscine, le sauna et le gym est une blague, tout est désuet

I do not recommend this hotel at all. Rooms are not clean, noise all night long. Smoking smell down the hall and leaks to the rooms. Not worth the price at all.

Les prix sont abordables pour Monsieur-Madame tout le monde. Les chambres sont responsable mais la différence se situe dans le service à la clientèle qui est très bien. Pour ce qui est du resto-bar, je dirais que c'est bien: c'est tout.

Parking is a nightmare, I am here with my family for a hockey tournament and there is a holiday party in the ball room. There is NO parking, I circled the lot several time and cars are taking every inch of space. I complained and was told I could park a short 5 minute walk away. It is -15c outside! Why do I need to walk when the party gowers will not be here in the morning? !? ! I will never stay here again.

The hotel and the rooms are fine, buffet breakfast included would have been great keeping in view their rates.

I experienced little things which ticked me off for e.g the pillows were very big i asked for small ones and they didn't have any.

I had asked for some toiletries they were not able to get them delivered to my room and I was asked to go to reception to get them.

The hotel was half occupied, I asked them if i could do a late check out may be 2 hours and they refused and mentioned it will be extra charge, even for one hour it will be extra charge and they offered me 30 mins without charge.

Also i was told the hotel has free shuttle available to be used within 3 Kms however i was surprised they had reduced the time for it from 24 hours to 3 PM to 10: 45 PM. Its in winters you have more need to use the shuttle and in summers you can walk within 3 miles. Did not make sense to me.

Ill probably explore some other hotel next time Ill go to Montreal.

Very friendly at the desk and the restaurant. Eager to speak English. Bar service requires a wait every time up to 20 minutes. Housekeeping was tipped $5/day and did not remove/clean dirty dishes. Called room service at 9: 20 pm, went to bed at 10: 50 pm as order did not show up. No call, nothing.

Le service était parfait et la nourriture aussi, seul bémol la toilette des femmes, de la salle de réception en haut, laissait a désirer.

Everything there as described close to botanic gardens and they will ferry you to and from metro between 4: 00 and 10: 30 pm

Unfortunately, my experience here was mixed. The good: the overall facility is as advertised, with clean, well maintained rooms, a nice restaurant area and excellent location near the Olympic complex and a large park and the Montreal botanical garden. I visited in summer so did a lot of walking to these venues and enjoyed the scenery.

The bad: Given my experience, I cannot in good faith recommend this hotel to anyone who is a light sleeper or is otherwise sensitive to excessive noise after hours. Details: There was an extended family staying next door whose children were out of control. They ran around the hall and the adults did not mind the kids making it a sport to enter and exit rooms aimlessly what seemed like a few hundred times each day, especially in late evenings, each time letting the doors slam shut. I understand that the family was spread across a few rooms and people need to interact. What I do not understand is complete disregard for the impact that frequent and repeated slamming of doors, running and shouting in the hallways at 11pm or 12am might have on other guests. I called the front desk but it did not appear to have any effect, since when the personnel stopped by it happened to be during the brief minute when people just happened to be in their rooms. Then the pattern continued. In the rooms, the children shouted and there was no sign of adults trying to enforce any kind of bedtime despite it being past midnight. I could have requested to be relocated, but the hotel was close to capacity and I was only there a couple days, so relocating for 1 night in the middle of the night would have been more hassle than it was worth.

Ensuring courteous and respectful behavior by children is not the duty of hotel staff, it is the responsibility of thr parents. The next morning they predictably all slept until 9-10am. No matter one's home culture, when you are in a Western country you need to follow the social norms of the Western culture, this includes disciplining children to keep the noise down after a certain hour, not when you go to sleep but when it is reasonable to assume that most other guests go to sleep, typically no later than 10pm. I actually doubt that the type of parenting (or rather, non-parenting) this family exhibited is characteristic of acceptable conduct in their home culture, either. Respect for the well being of others is universal, especially if one's behavior might be causing difficulties for others, including the elderly. Parents should always be cognizant of the potential adverse impact of excessive noise produced by their children in social settings where strangers coexist in shared spaces separated by thin walls.

At the same time, the responsibility to enforce regulations regarding noise to ensure the comfort of all guests is also shared by the establishment. I believe that hotels in general, including this hotel, should take a more proactive role in monitoring noise levels, especially when your room doors have a tendency to slam with a loud bang. I suggest that the hotel have security personnel that regularly walk through and monitor the hallways after 10pm to check for noise levels. This has to be done continuously multiple times per hour, until midnight or later. Additionally, I recommend this hotel to modify their room doors to mitigate the loud banging noise they make when allowed to shut after being swung open. It will go a long way to improving the customer experience and will a help make the place a little more 'idiot proof' when it comes to irresponsible and inconsiderate conduct by some guests.

Went to the Sherbrooke venue. Very nice set up, big dance floor. Really liked the up-lighting as well. Hors d'oeuvres were delicious but felt very Costco like

It was a nice room, but sound caries too much from the halls into the room, hard to sleep.

Their free WiFi should be something of concern.once connected, I was able to scan every computer connected to the network (this was a passive scan, nothing more). I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable using it without being connected to VPN to at least encrypt all of your traffic and having a personal firewall to prevent all incoming traffic. This is not something most people have, and I would recommend that they change their setup as soon as possible, and at the very, very least, have client side isolation.

Universel is an adequate hotel. It was coneinient for our purpose and the staff was always friendly. The room was clean and well kept, however the entire property seems due for an upgrade.

Room and bathroom were very tidy. Wi-Fi was easy to use and did not require a password. Both me and my wife slept very good, especially considering we're both light sleepers. Only complaint is perhaps that the breakfast was average but considering the overall price was still very nice (you have a variety of choices, free coffee refills, they serve fruits with your breakfast even a la carte)

The brunch was exquisite the choices of food was just right and complemented what one would usually eat for both breakfast and lunch. The desserts and fruits were mouth watering and fresh and the set up was easy on the eyes over all wonderful service and experience

We had a 80 person reception in one of the banquet rooms. The staff was attentive to are needs, the food was excellent and parking was easy and free.

Staff are friendly and helpful. Some of the nicest people both the hotel and restaurant staff. I thought we'd have problems with the language because they speak French, that was not a problem. They were very thoughtful and accommodating.

Good location, neat, clean, and the attendees at the reception were polite and well informed, will love to visit again. It will be great if they provide free Breakfast.
