Kagayaki

Overall, quite pricey for the quality of food and service. Every plate of vegetable and rice is clearly prepared well in advance (the rice was quite dry, obviously not fresh, by the time we received it for example). It took well over 30 minutes for our order to be taken, and another 40 for food plates to arrive. Entrees and drinks were served last.
My disappointment over the experience stems from their inability to cater to dietary requirements. I do not have particularly difficult ones to accommodate - I am lactose intolerant and have to avoid tofu for health concerns.
Each meal comes with a plate of rice cakes and tofu. I asked to please not waste food and not to bring me the tofu since I won't be able to eat it, but if at all possible would like more rice cake to compensate. I was brought the tofu plate, being told substitutions were not possible (which is fair.but I still can't safely have tofu, and no other solution was offered).
Then came dessert which was included. My options were a scoop of Oreo ice cream, or espresso with vanilla ice cream. Other menus had melon for dessert so I asked if I could possibly have that instead seeing as I am lactose intolerant, as they were told. I was replied "no".
For a restaurant which has, on its menu, "please inform us of any food allergies or dietary requirements and we will be happy to accommodate you", it fell quite short of the mark.

My favorite place for hot pot in down town Montreal. The broth is so tasty to the point where everything else (vegetables, the lamb, etc) goes perfectly well alongside it. It’s a bit pricey now since the prices have increased. Fortunately, the ice cream desert is already included in the whole meal and it’s a good ending to the wonderful meal. You’re better off calling to reserve because it can get crowded on busy evenings.

Just ordered on UberEats, missing items, they lied about the content of the order, they say there is korean rice cake included, but I did no tget it and nothing to replace it even though I was charged full price. I got only veggies, noodles and rice, not the usual little cakes that I like in the set. Plus the amount of broth is ridiculously small, there is so little broth I cannot even cook all the veggies in it, too many veggies for very little broth, this makes no sense. A few years ago, I used to like this restaurant, but they increased the prices and reduced the items and amounts, this is stealing, which is all th emore unfair for returning customers. Will not be ordering there ever again, I feel so betrayed

J'ai été très déçue de ma soirée chez shabu shabu et c'est regrettable car ce n'était pas ma première visite dans cet établissement. Puisque nous sommes pescovégétariennes, nous nous sommes assurées auprès du serveur que le plat commandé ne comporte que des fruits de mer. Une fois le repas servi, nous constatons qu'il y avait 1 portion de fruits de mer et 2 portions de viandes. Le restaurant n'a pas assumé sa responsabilité et nous avons été obligées de prendre le plat en entier (98$) car la viande était déjà préparée. Si nous voulions une autre portion fruits de mer, il y aurait un extra. Finalement, le serveur et la serveuse nous ont apporté 2 mini portions de fruits de mer (40$) ce qui résulte en 3 portions de fruits de mer alors que nous avions seulement demandé une portion extra afin que chacune ait sa portion de fruits de mer puisqu'il y avait déjà une portion de fruits de mer incluse dans le plat initial. Nous avons été chargées pour 138$ pour un plat qui qui au départ valait 98$. Le serveur nous a mal renseigné, mais il était malgré tout sympathique alors que sa collègue, qui semblait être la superviseur, était sur la défensive, mais sans toutefois assumer de responsabilité dans cette confusion. Je crois qu'il y avait lieu de discussion pour que chacune des parties assume une part de responsabilité ce que le restaurant n'a pas fait. Aussi, nous avions une réservation à 18h30 et à 19h, on nous fait remarquer que le restaurant fermera ses portes à 21h et qu'il serait important de commander rapidement. Pour ma part, hier était ma dernière visite chez shabu shabu.

Très bon, ça vaut le détour.néanmois, je regrette le fait que ce ne soit pas à volonté, pour le prix. Le repas reste quand même délicieux, la viande est vraiment bonne, mais je reviens que l'expérience n'était pas la meilleure que j'ai eu.

BEST JAPANESE FONDUE FOOD YOU WILL EAT IN MONTREAL! I have have been coming here for the past 7 years and I can’t get enough of it!

The food is great, very fresh and exquisite.
With the variety of broths, meats, sides and veggies; you can make each meal an absolute new creation.
This restaurant doesn’t just make the food enjoyable, it makes the whole visit a brand new experience. If you have to chose one place in that area, it has to be Kagayaki. I’ve been going there for over a decade, and it never stops to impressed me. Thank you Patrick!

The food was incredible that's for sure
we arrived at 7pm, got our food and drinks by 8. They asked us how we were going to split the bill even before we got the food Which is just weird. 30 minutes after we started eating they reminded us that the kitchen would close soon.
As soon as we finished they told us we had 15mn to leave.
As I said the food is great but the service has definitely room for improvement, especially for the price.
Also, they charged us items that we never received, that's on us, but still, they rushed us for the bill.

Amazing! Easy for first time hot-pot-ers and service was great, usually when we go out the stew already has seasonings, but here you could add it yourself, design was beautiful and overall one of the best restaurants I’ve been too

Delightful food, exceptional good meat. Only one waitress at work, but she did her best to serve the whole restaurant as fast as possible.

Totally not worth the price. Food was good, but the quantity was so little. Also it takes lots of time to serve the food, don’t come if you are hungry.

I was really disappointed for the services. And for 37 dollars plus tax they only offer 5 small pieces of beef.

This place was beautiful and the food was delicious. I highly recommend for a slow evening. The meat is missing from the picture.

Great experience! Our first time at a shabu shabu, so we were a little shy, but once we started cooking, wow. So much flavour, everything super fresh. Excellent staff, the service was wonderful.

Great shabu shabu/hot pot place in Montreal. Fresh foods with delicious flavors at a reasonably good price. Great ambiance and decor without being too noisy. Fast and friendly service.

Came without a reservation and was seated. Waited 35 minutes to simply order. Waited 15 more minutes for the food to arrive. Could have just told us to leave. Left a 8% tip and was interrogated at the cash by the waitress for leaving less than %15. The menu did not say “mandatory 15% tip”. Very slow and very very rude service.

An amazing experience.if your reservation is actually taken! First visit was perfect. Second visit, I made a reservation 2 days before and when I arrive on site, the waitress told me I didnt have a reservation!? ! The person on the phone took it for FRIDAY instead of SATURDAY! (Even though we spoke 2 times, and on the 2 times I mentionned SATURDAY) So when I came with my friend we got told we didnt have a reservation, it was full and the lady just turned her back and continued her service. It was very disappointed, it kinda ruined our night.: (I called to spoke to the manager, left a message and didnt have any callback.

So my advice if you book: CALL BACK 3 TIMES TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE RIGHT DAY! 2 times wasnt enough.

Seul hic c'est le retrait de certaines choses d'avant la covid comme les petits légume marinée et les choix d'alcool parfois indisponible, mais c'est probablement aussi du a la covid.

Très bon! Nous avons essayé cette place par hasard et nous n’avons pas été déçus. Le service était excellent et les portions très généreuses, ce n’est pas à volonté mais nous n’avons manqué de rien. Mention spéciale aux options végétariennes, plusieurs sortes de tofu et des légumes en abondance et en variété. Un délice!

This place is my favorite of all the hotpot spots in Montreal! I never leave there unsatisfied. The menu changed over time but the food is always delicious. You have your own pot and you choose your broth and the meat you want. It's a shame I didn't take a picture.price is a bit high but the experience is worth it!:) I chose the meat lover combo with the spicy broth and I wasn't disappointed! The waitresses were polite and available. Definitely will come back and recommend!

The food was incredibly delicious and it was quite a unique experience. I really enjoy shabu shabu and this restaurant lived up to my expectations. It was on the expensive side, but overall it was a nice visit.

Kicked out with really rude customer service. Only because they dont take reservation customers.they could just kindly tell us instead of “no no spot for you guys! ” ….

We tried to go on a Saturday night but they were booked til 8pm. We decided to make a reservation for Sunday instead and we had a fantastic time. We were concerned about sitting too close to other people but we were glad to hear they skip at least one seat between parties and it wasn’t crowded at all so we got our own area. We got the $68 menu item that comes with angus beef, lamb, pork belly, assorted veggies with tofu, 2 types of noodle, 2 rice bowls, 2 ponzu and 2 peanut sauces. I got the dashi broth and my partner got the spicy broth. The dashi broth was delicious and wonderful to drink on its own. My partner enjoyed the spicy broth as well. All of the food was fantastic and it was the perfect amount for 2 people. The $68 menu item also comes with 2 desserts, which are the green tea ice cream and dorayaki. Both were great. It looked like there was only one waiter for the whole restaurant and there were about 4-5 different parties. No complaints about service though, he did a great job. Definitely would come back here again

J’ai beaucoup apprécié l’expérience au Kagayaki. Le bouillon sukiyaki est un coup de coeur ainsi que la liqueur de prune (umeshu) qui me rapelle de bons souvenirs du japon.

Good food, nice experience with the taste of Japan meal for two. Service was poor as there was only one waiter for the entire place.

The food was great-tasting, fresh and fun! Never thought of shabu shabu as Japanese fondue, but it is and it was delicious here at Kagayaki. Looking forward to coming here again:)

My wife and I really enjoyed the couples option. Food was great and plentiful. Service was excellent. Definitely recommended. Nice little place in Chinatown.

As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with a warm welcome. We were seated socially distance from a couple on our left.

I went to the bathroom immediately to wash my hands and I was pleasantly surprised by how clean and renovated the entire place was. The art work and ambiance of the restaurant is sublime. I was most taken aback by the photo of Mount Fuji and the little souvenirs they sell for $5 in the glass case.

The U shaped table is unique to me and a very interesting and new way of hosting people for dinner. I loved how much access our waiter had to us. It was a very refreshing experience with the Hana Awaka that we drank in chilled champagne glasses.

The soup has a very traditional flavour and I know that it is not made from a generic frozen soup base. They put a lot of effort into the presentation of all of the dishes.

Everything was delicately placed on the table and plates. The waiter informed us of the cooking times for each ingredient which I found super helpful and informative.

After eating a delicious meal, we chose green tea ice cream as dessert. The wafer was a special touch to the ice cream in my opinion. It reminded me of a childhood memory of eating the cone of an ice cream on a hot summer day.

The service was impeccable and very attentive. I have 0 complaints. Our waiter was kind, friendly and had a great sense of humour.

It was all in all a great experience and it holds true to the authentic way of enjoying hot pot with family in a relaxing atmosphere.

I will be returning.

Délicieux! Nous avons commandé via Uber eats et avons appelé avant de passer la commande. Le service au téléphone afin de nous expliquer le menu et les options à considérer était d’une courtoisie et politesse remarquables. La viande et les légumes, étaient frais. Les portions étaient raisonnables, pour deux adultes un enfant nous avons pris deux portions et nous avons des restes pour le lendemain. Très bon restaurant, j’y allais il y a 10 ans et ça n’a pas changé. Un incontournable à Montréal

Didn’t expect that they have such authentic taste of sukiyaki. Considering the price I think the quality of their sliced beef could be improved.

Mon dieu doux Jésus, j'ai très bien mangé. Merci pour cette bonne nourriture, en ce temps de confinement rien n'était plus réconfortant qu'un bon repas de cette qualité chez moi. Über Eat proposait un deux pour un, c'était probablement le meilleur take out de ma vie. Merci encore!

Food is excellent. Great experience and ambiance! The service in person can sometimes be slow which takes away from the overall experience. However, the food and even the takeout menu is wonderful! It is appreciated that they can accommodate my gluten allergies!

One of my favorite restaurants in Montreal. Im glad they have Take-Out SHABU SHABU Kits. I ordered one combo for dinner. It’s well-packed. All the ingredients are super fresh. The whole cooking process was less then 5 mins. Basically, you just need to put the broth (frozen) in a pot and wait until it’s boiling. (the SHABU kit comes with a cooking instruction) Then you can put all the ingredients into the pot and let it boils again. The SHABU kit worked out perfectly for me. Just tasted same as din-in in the restaurant.

Food is amazing, very fresh and soup is perfect taste. Staffs are very friendly, helpful and patient because she cant speak english well but tried really hard to help us. We left with happiness and satisfaction.

Been here a few times. Service is very good. If you've never been the staff is very clear in how it works. Clean as well.
Service was quick and if anything is missing they respond fast. Food wasn't spectacular but it was above average and I clear the plates.
My only issue is it gets kind of cramped fast when its busy. But overall? Good place.

Je suis venue faire l'anniversaire de mon fiancé. Nous etions 15 et nous avons passé une magnifique soirée. La nourriture etait excellente et le service très bon! Merci pour la superbe serveuse qui a tout fait pour que ce soit parfait.

Cependant, juste une chose a dire. Lorsque l'on fête un anniversaire et que l'on apporte un minimum de 10 personnes, il est quand meme gentil de donner le repas gratuit à la personne à qui on souhaite l'anniversaire. Ce que l'on a pas eu. J'ai trouvé ça dommage car dans tout les autres restaurants ou je suis aller pour faire un anniversaire, le service etait gratuit pour la personne a qui c'etait la fête.

Merci beaucoup dans tout les cas! On vous recommande ce restaurant avec joie, mise a part ça. Tout etait parfait:)

If you're ever in the area, you have to go to this restaurant. The food is obviously the most important part of any restaurant and this one nailed it. It is the best Japanese food I've ever eaten in my life. The presentation is also lovely. However you MUST make a reservation, otherwise you're going to find yourself waiting in line to eat, which would not be optimal. They also offer a wide variety of Japanese drinks that are not offered in the SAQ. Its an amazing place, go there!

Si vous êtes dans le coin, vous devez vous rendre à ce restaurant. C'est le meilleur mets japonais que j'ai jamais mangé de ma vie. La présentation est également belle. Cependant, vous DEVEZ faire une réservation, sinon vous vous retrouverez a attendre pour manger, ce qui ne serait pas optimal. Ils offrent également une grande variété de boissons japonaises qui ne sont pas offertes à la SAQ. C'est un endroit incroyable, allez-y!

Excellent food and broth. The staff takes the time to explain everything in the dish and suggest how to prepare the food in the pot.

I guess if you are hungry and don’t want to spend tons for a meal here is okay. Don’t expect anything fancy would show up. I paid $20 for lunch and that’s already a bit over for what I would pay for lunch. Staffs were friendly but service was slow. Not planning to go back again.

Good price. Good food. Good service. It was my first time in a Shabu Shabu and the staff was super helpful! Will add this to my to go place. I'm also happy to find out about the fact it's peanut free.

I never really gave bad reviews just because some places may deserve another chance or so but this place is SCAM people BEWARE!

First of all you have to pick a meal (choice of meat 19$-24$) and all the meals include:
1. Choice of broth.
From 6 choices, I chose the Traditional one which said “This clear broth cooked from the famous Hokkaido Kombu Hidaka and Shiitake mushrooms will gently enhance the flavor of food”.
Unfortunately it was nothing like it and there was a small pot full of water half of small mushroom and a tiny piece of seaweed no flavour of broth, it was literally a hot water.
My friend chose Chef’s spicy special but it was just a water with gochujang.

2. Meat and other side dishes. Meat isn’t worth the price, on the menu it says 5 oz but in reality it was 2-3 oz. Vegetable mix was also included but 80% of it is cabbage and broccoli, also comes in a very tiny basket. On the menu it said it included 2 sauces (ponzu&sesame) but you had to ask for it and the server responded like she was doing a big favour for us by bringing them.

Service!
The waitress was okay, brought the items in a fast pace, was filling a water etc but the fact that she was forcing out the other customers was indeed very awful. As soon as the other group of guys finished eating they ordered extra beers. The waitress asked how they would like the bill and the group responded that they would like to have the bill later but regardless she brought the bill and the machine with the bill and made them pay. As the waitress couldn’t speak French you could hear that the group of guys were very disappointed talking between themselves.

The other group of 2 women came and ordered their food but 15-20 minutes later the waitress let them know that they didn’t have it.

Overall the food was bad the service was under standard I still tipped the waitress 10% but her reaction was super mad!

So yeah, avoid at all cost!

If you are in that area looking for shabu shabu or hot pot restaurant I would recommend The Happy Lamb hot pot quality food with decent service for a less price.

C'est tres bon et j'ai eu plusieurs bonnes visites, mais ma derniere visite ça a pris 30 min juste prendre notre commande suivi de 30 min de plus pour amener la bouffe, c'est inacceptable comme délais. Je voulais commander un extra, les serveuses ne sont pas venues en face de nous pendant 20 min. Le thé n'a jamais été refill de tous les 2h qu'on a été là.

Le restaurant est vraiment beau! Le U au milieu est vraiment cool mais pas très conviviale si on vient à plusieurs comme on est placé en ligne. Nous avons demandé à avoir une table au fond ou nous étions face à face. Le service était vraiment agréable, disponible en français, il y a un gros choix de formule. Nous avons tous prit le shabu shabu au angus et la viande était vraiment bonne! En plus de la viande, il y a un bon choix de légume, d'accompagnement et de nouille qui viennent avec. Une bonne adresse à garder en mémoire!

It was my first time eating here and we were a pretty large group, but the waiters explained how everything worked really well and the food was top quality. There are so many ways to mix your order that really encourages you to want to go back and try out different options. Highly recommended it!

This hotpot spot is very delicious. It is a bit expensive but you always leave full and get a lot of food for what you pay!

You get a plate of veggies, rice, noodles, a plate of meat, appetizer, tea, dessert and a drink.

I always love everytime I visit and i am never disappointed. The quality of the meat is always perfect.

Deuxième fois que j’y vais, deuxième fois que j’adore.
Un peu difficile à trouver, ce restaurant est superbe. Le personnel est accueillant et très sympathique, la nourriture est à un bon rapport qualité prix et le porc premium est excellent!
Je recommande chaudement à qui veut profiter d’un bon repas et faire une vraie pause dans un environnement convivial.

My first time at this awesome shabu shabu place and it was all incredible. We had a great experience - food and service was superb. We had the sukiyaki lamb and dashi pork and both were unique but really tasty. The prices are very reasonable as they include a ton of stuff in the base price (drinks, dessert, salad/soup, dipping sauce, noodles, rice) I wish they would open in Toronto as this is a really cool concept and experience!

Last night was probably the 4th time we've eaten at Kagayaki over the past 7 years. I always order the beef shabu-shabu with the traditional broth, and it was delicious as usual. To me, it tastes just like it does in Japan. By 7: 30 pm, the restaurant was lively and almost full on a Thursday evening.

The quality of the meat and vegetables was well worth the price, which was 24$ for the whole meal that included one plate of meat, vegetables, rice, noodles and a side dish. The service was also friendly, not as welcoming as restaurants in Japan but they were still nice and friendly. The only part that wasb't up to my taste was the broth. The flavours were not strong enough in my opinion in that regard.

Good dinner experience. Friendly service and fresh ingredients. The flavour of the broth was good, but nothing too exciting. It is nice to have a "combo" section of the menu to guide you if you've eaten here before!

Un restaurant Shabu Shabu qui fait un sukiyaki délicieux! Le personnel est aux petits soins. Je recommande.

La nourriture est vraiment excellente, mais la dernière visite a pris près d'un heure pour se faire servir. Ceci serait donc vraiment à revoir. Par contre j'y retournerais quand même, car c'est très bon niveau qualité-prix.

The bald headed guy service was incredibly appalling. Blatant double standard service display. Food was mediocre. Can't even rate it zero-star. Will never recommend this place and I strongly recommend to give that bald headed guy additional customer service training

Delicious and fresh food, very comforting as it is hot pot. Used to go there quite a while, if you are in the neighbourhood it's a great place to sit down and take your time to eat.
