La Porte Grecque

This quaint, almost institution has been on Sources for decades.in the same old, stone farm house. The restaurant has expanded over the years and is a bit of a hodge podge, with the main central dining area surrounded in the original stone with wood paneling trim and the an newer addition that does not exactly fit with the interior theme.which is very cozy.

The menu offers all the typical Greek offerings although the menu itself is not as plentiful as other similar cuisines around Montreal. For our meal we had the Lentil Soup (very good), the Spanikopita (excellent.terrific filo and spinach pastry), the Taramosalata (also excellent) and the Oregano Chicken Filet (very good.with well marinated chicken breast although the portion of roasted potatoes could have been larger.but this is a very minor complaint). The only downside was the baklava dessert. When discussing it with our server (who was excellent, by the way), he acknowledge that it was not made in house until the rest of our food. So, it was clear, that their home made dishes are very good.just ask before ordering. Enjoy!

Just left this restaurant we were celebrating a special birthday 15 girls the waiter were very friendly and helpful food was ok how ever the restaurant need a complete makeover the ladies bathroom was disgusting the carpet was ripped a d very dangerous we sat out side the tablecloths need updating the blue chairs were very uncomfortable the restaurant needs a face lift, we will Not Be returning or recommend this restaurant.

Food was great and prices very reasonable. Staff went out of their way to help and fulfill requests. Definitely recommend this restaurant!

My FAVOURITE restaurant, and that's no exaggeration. Charming atmosphere, excellent service, BYOW, and the food is always outstanding. Seriously, every dish I've ever tried is incredible.

Had a family dinner. The food was what you would expect from a grec place. The waitress was kind. The place was not busy. Everyone’s food was good except one of the plates was a little burnt. The dessert options were delicious.

Came here after a long time and it felt like old times! Food was great, service was great, and the atmosphere was just right. Can’t understand why so many negative reviews lately, we ordered a lot of food and really enjoyed.

Had a birthday party with over 20 people and they sat us in the solarium part. It was -12C outside and it was almost as cold inside. Wound up eating my dinner with my coat on. Everybody was making comments about how cold we were. This should not be a sitting area in the winter. Very disappointed!

I ordered the filet mignon medallions with shrimp and they did not cook the meat enough. Rare when I asked for medium well (I know that it's usually undercooked so I was expecting medium). Had to argue to get the bill corrected.

Hadn't been in years and will not go again

Lots of negative reviews lately sadly have something in common - they’re doing takeout. Unfortunately, takeout from a place like this won’t be too great - it’s the kind of food you need to eat hot and fresh - shrimp, steak, etc.

As for my take on this place, I enjoyed the food, the service was absolutely on point and friendlier than most places, and the prices are fair for the rather large portions. Are there better food options around? Sure. But we had zero issues accommodating a large group for a surprise party, and top that with the fact that it’s BYOW, it’s not too shabby.

Only negative I’d say is that the decor needs a facelift. There was a rather gross and dirty, uh, sink with random stuff in it? Next to our table. I think it needs some work in thay department. Overall, however, enjoyable.

So sad to see the lows this once-wonderful family restaurant has reached.
Let me start with the food which was less than mediocre. Entrées and other items in the mains are clearly store-bought and ready-made like the butterfly shrimp and clearly-fake scallops. Most of our mains seemed unfresh, precooked, reheated, and barely warm, with the exception of the calamari which was chewy. 2 members of my party received their butterfly shrimps still cold and had to send them back. Chewy, luke-warm lamb chops and potatoes.
The ambiance: awful. The first thing I noticed walking in was the musty smell of the extra-old, juicy carpet that desperately needs to be replaced. The entire evening was spent listening the an on-and-off radio station playing movie soundtrack music, which went from Heigh-Ho Heigh-Ho It's off to work we go (Snow White and the seven dwarves), to You could be mine by GnR (Terminator 2), to the instrumental theme of Schindler's List.
Of the 2 stars I give, one is to our waiter which was excellent, the other to the fact that I've not gotten ill from the food I ate, as I was anticipating.
I've been returning to this restaurant for over 30 years, for family events, dates, or just with the boys. Pretty sure this was the last. Truely sad.

This used to be our absolute favorite restaurant in the west island, but the quality of the food has unfortunately gone down, the portion sizes gone down and the prices gone up. I'm not sure if the management has changed but the service tonight was particularly bad. There was a mixup with our takeout order and we were missing some things from one plate; it happens, I get it. The manager patronized me by saying "so you were just missing 3 shrimp and 3 scallop? " For a 27$ plate YES! I was missing them. I got a 15$ refund when I decided to call back for the second time after 2 hours just before closing time. The manager doesn't really seem to understand what customer service means. To make my life easier I took the suggested refund but will definitely never return.

Nous aimions de petit resto mais n’étions pas retourné depuis plusieurs années.
Nous sommes allé souper hier mais avons été déçu en tout point… service très ordinaire: on nous apporte une bouteille d’eau mais pas de verres! La serveuse ne repasse pas donc nous allons chercher des verres nous même!
je commande une entrée de calmars mais pas de sauce: je la reçois avec de la sauce.
Assiette de pétoncles enveloppés de bacon; le bacon est tellement frit qu’il est presque brûlé. Je demande s’il est possible d’avoir une salade greque en accompagnement et ce n’est plus possible (soit salade du jardin ou patates et riz). Je choisis donc patates et riz mais je reçois la salade… encore une fois, la serveuse ne repasse pas pour vérifier si tout est ok…
L’assiette de combo poulet et filet mignon était bonne mais l’entrée de saucisses était vraiment salé…
Ce n’est plus comme avant et nous ne retournerons pas.

Ambiance was very welcoming. Service efficient. Food was nice.
Moussaka was lighter than I'm accustomed to, which is refreshing, but the flavour needs to evolve.

Delicious dinner! Started with fried calamari then moussaka and the village plate. Huge portions including salad, rice and wonderful Greek potatoes. All served by an excellent efficient friendly waiter. A great meal in a cozy setting and best of all, very reasonably priced and bring your own wine! A return visit for sure!

Best Greek restaurant in the West island. Quality has gone down over the past decades unfortunately, but the portions and prices are still relatively reasonable. The sauce on their calamari is great, and their grilled foods are flavourful.

Good food. Decent prices but service isn't great. The weekends are very crowded and noisy and the waits are long for a table. This is an old restored house and the floors are very squeaky and vibrate when staff walks around which can be very annoying depending on where you are sitting. Also there are many items on the menu that are never available.
UPDATE: went back last week and quality has gone down. Won't be going back.

On the outdoor terrace, wife and I both ordered the Greek Calamari appetizer and chicken oregano for the main meal. I was concerned about the negative comments but so happy I tried it. They have really stepped up their game; everything was perfect and no words can accurately describe it except to say, "YOU MUST TRY! ".

I visited this place for the first time with a friend. Excellent food, wonderful ambience, welcoming staff and price is reasonable too. Look forward to visiting again when I travel Montreal in the future!

The food is delicious, the staff is super friendly. Good value for the price as well. Cute little cabin feel to the dining room. Would definitely recommend!

***Food Poisoning***
Unfortunately, I never find myself to actually act on writing a negative experience and actually write a negative review. As a business owner myself, I would dislike negative comments because in truth we are only human and such negative comments are usually from our emotional reasoning rather than from our rational reasoning. Moreover, having gone to the Porte grecque numerous times over the last 20 years with relatively pleasant experiences, I am
not proud to have to leave a comment like this.

However, in my opinion there is a fine line with error’s, bad service and neglect. Our table, on Saturday night Mars 12 2022, we received most of our meals not adequately cooked and was brought back to the kitchen to be properly recooked -we had 4 signature Porte Grecque meals returned and I shared a Tzatziki dipping dish + a calamari dish with a few friends.

Unfortunately for me, perhaps because of the extremely low light setting and not being able to really see the level of cuisson (mind you it could have been the Tzatziki sauce or Calamari too) ; I found myself eating all my plate and ended up having the worst bout of food poisoning in my life -about 4-5hrs after completing the meal. I therefore felt compelled to let the people know, and the let Porte Grecque administration know that at no point is it ever acceptable for a restaurant to serve contaminated and/or improperly cooked foods. Please review your kitchen policies, such situations are simply horrible to experience and should never occur from a quality restaurant.

This restaurant is my favourite one. Great food and ambience. But price has gone up considerably.

Very disappointed- salmon burned / black /, asked to be replaced- new was the same. Lamb chops- same problem! Last time in this resto!

Ce fût une réel déception, nous qui étions impatient de reprendre contact avec ce restaurant si longtemps fréquenté. L’accueil fût glacial tout comme la salle à manger, nous avons souper rapidement avec nos manteaux, trop froid, si vous n’avez pas de téléphone intelligent pour consulter le menu, tant pis pour vous car il n’y a pas de menu papiers disponible. Nos assiettes n’avait plus les saveurs pour laquelle nous aimions fréquentes cet endroit. Désolée et désolant

Wonderfull experience when the owner is present. When he is absent, the experience leaves more to be desired.

I have been going here for over 5 years, and it remains one of my favourite Greek restaurants. Their calamari is to die for, as well as there butterfly shrimp! Lovely bonus is you can bring your own beer or wine!

We ordered takeout and were very disappointed by the entire meal.

The fried calamari was like floured bread crumbs with a taste of old cardboard.

Half of the salad they included was rotten.

The potatoes were stale and refried several times.

The butterfly garlic shrimp were not fresh and dry.

And the filet mignon (ordered medium-rare) arrived blue. We had recook it at home.

We ordered at 6: 30 pm on a Saturday night, so this lack of freshness was unacceptable and we're very disappointed.

TLDR: Overpriced, so-so food. I do not recommend

Had very high expectations when I went here and was so let down. The food quality was sub-par. The only thing that was good was the main meat on the plate all the sides, entree etc.were not good at all. Very disappointed especially for the price. I would not go back there ever.

Quality has taken a sharp decline since the reopening I've been ordering almost twice a week from this restaurant previously and I've watched as the quality and the portion sizes have gotten smaller.tonight was maybe the last time I will be ordering from them my order arrived late although my delivery driver was waiting at the restaurant earlier then expected and I received wilted lettuce that was browned and undercooked steak and bacon I am terribly disappointed.

Portion size of the pork souvlaki was questionable. 2 very small pork sticks with very small pieces of meat. Disappointed… I could only get a portion of tzatiki that costs an extra 7$. No 1/2 portions. Lots of rice and potatoes on the plate with small salad.

Went here for dinner for my mom's birthday.
Food was delicious, portions were extremely generous for the price.
It was a great meal with great service.
Will definitely return.

Excellent service, great menu! Bring your own wine to accompany your meal! Our table had 4 different plates which everyone enjoyed! I had the filet mignon brochette and it was delicious! Looking forward to going back!

Disappointed. The food was not as good as it was in the past. Inexperienced waiter staff, had to open our own bottles of wine.

Very diverse menu selections to please everyone. Very nice sized portions. Food and service was very good. Very good value. Bring your own wine keeps the tab very reasonable.

J'ai été déçue en rentrant au resto. Je comprends qu'à l'intérieur c'est authentique mais au moins qu'il soit propre. On était au 2ème étage, un tapis sale, un climatiseur non fonctionnel, une odeur désagréable. Le fait que je donne 2 étoiles c'est que la nourriture est généreuse mais pas plus bonne qu'ailleurs au west island et en plus ça manque de présentation. S'il vous plait, je comprends que vous voulez garder l'authenticité mais au moins entretenez bien votre resto et gardez-le propre et frais. La porte grecque c'était une grande déception. Dommage!

Unfortunately had a very unsatisfactory experience. Waiter arguing with me about the menu and what I read and what he knows even when I proved it on my phone. Food was cold when it finally arrived. We were so hungry that we didn't send it back. There were not many tables full downstairs, 1 party upstairs (we heard the happy birthday singing) don't understand why so long to receive our food. Overheard Waiters arguing between tables in front of clients. Was not explained and not clear how ordering was supposed to be done during these new covid rules. To complete this terrible experience, the waiter asked if the cash on the table was his tip (we left 15% regardless of service and experience) and took it, in front of us while we were still sitting and paying our bill! Not acceptable!

Toujours un plaisir daller à ce resto qui est notre favori dans le ouest island, depuis 11 ans maintenant. Alex notre serveur sur la terrasse à été très simpatique et à l'écoute. Contente de voir que ce resto à survécu à la pandémie.
Je ne donne pas 5 etoiles car il y a tjs place à amélioration (pain pas trop de goût, petoncle sont un amalgame de remplissage et solarium vieillissant s'enfonce dans ses fondations)
Mais qua cela ne tienne, nous reviendrons encore et toujours pour le poulet, les crevettes, les calmars, le petoncles, la vinaigrette, le filet mignon etc.

Awesome restaurant, food and friendly service! Beautiful antique house, serving the best calimari in all of Montreal! The roasted potatoes melt in your mouth! The bacon wrapped scallops and oregano chicken are to die for! Our waiter Roberto was so kind and genuine, a true gem! We dined alfresco but the inside of the restaurant is also very charming. We never miss the chance to celebrate every occasion we can there!

Love the food and had an incredible waitress. Only down side was when I had to discuss a situation with the manager - he initially acted with arrogance but finally agreed to a compromise.

Service très rapide. Les serveuses sont sympatiques et la bouffe est très bonne. J'ai mangé une moussaka qui était fondante en bouche tellement c'était tendre.

Building is nearly 150 years old, stunning architecture. Very nice authentic Greek food, bring your own wine. Not too expensive.

I always have a great meal there. The service is not always fast and friendly and you need to make sure that you leave in time for the next seating if you have an early meal, but their kitchen is efficient and effective enough to make that possible. Quality and flavour is consistently delivered.

They have a plate with quail, lamb chops, and Greek sausage that really hits me in all the right places. Chicken, lamb, pork, and other Greek classics are all done right. Their calamari, tzatziki, and salads also satisfy. They do a good job of handling large groups for special events with a fixed or varied menu. Make sure you make a reservation - they get very busy.

Very disappointed! Made a reservation on December 1st, for December 27th. Had a confirmation on December 4th for a party of 8! When we arrived on December 27th, we were informed that our reservation was not in the reservation book at the front desk. We were made to feel like we had never had a reservation to begin with. We were made to feel they made space for us, but had to be out by 7pm.for the people with the next reservation.the hostess kept walking by our table looking her watch. Made us all feel very uncomfortable. I was so embarrassed! We brought family to our favorite restaurant, and we were made to feel like second class citizen.my husband showed the hostess our confirmation of our reservation.all she said was I will deal with this? No apology or compensation for the inconvenience or lack of respect. We got sat at the table next to the service door. Very noisy and we were constantly bumped by servers passing by. Will I bring others to your restaurant. I don't think so. Very disappointed with the service and professional services as well.

Awful. The food was too salty and overcooked.
But the worst part was the waitress, she pushed us to eat asap and leave the table because someone waiting for the table!

Do not go there. The service was terrible. It was a mistake going there. The owner was rude, asking me how long I would need the table for and saying I must guarantee to be there for 6pm exactly when I made a reservation. When I arrived they were rude again and made my group of four wait ten minutes while they seated people who arrived after us. I note one person in the group was very visibly pregnant. When seated we were told that all the menus were in use for a big table. They were not. Tables around us were recieving menus.
