A beautiful church and must visit site in the old Montreal. Over the past 20 years, I have been in Montreal 3 times. Each time, I had myself wondered here and gazed around it, close and afar, drinking in its heavenly and earthy charm.
I liked the chapel but my rating goes to the museum related to Marguerite Bourgeoys's museum! What an amazing woman! Very sightful and thoughtful person even for today's world and time. It's ongoing research there to know more about the foundation of the place which was accidentally caused the excavation of indigenous fingerprints. Hopefully they have enough resources and supports to expand their work.
Montreal's oldest active historical structure is also an absolutely amazing window into the past, and provides spectacular views of the city. The "Sailors Church, " is dedicated to seafarers, as seen by the little ships hanging in the chapel, and that connection to the water is at its heart. The chapel itself is pretty, with some beautiful statuary, but it's the Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum that gives true value to this destination. For a small fee you will learn about Canada's first female saint through some fascinating displays, and even better than that you get access to the bell tower where you can step outside to see breathtaking views of Old Montreal and the St Lawrence River. The crypt underneath the chapel provides more history to enjoy, and you can even access the active archaeological site under the church! The staff at the museum were amazing as well, and the tour of the dig site was fantastic. Easily the best $14 I spent in Montreal, and a stop highly recommended for all visitors!
A chapel with rich history and lots to learn about Marguerite Bourgeoy's legacy.there is an attached museum inside to explore further which you need a ticket for but the main area is free to browse.don't forget to check out the side area as there is a lot of info on the history of this chapel and how it became the oldest chapel in Montreal.relish in the beauty of the stained glass windows as well!
Beautiful and amazing chapel! A must visit Montreal's heritage gem. Lovely tour with friendly and knowledgeable guide. We can go up to the top of the tower and see the old port of Montreal. So worth it!
Free to visit historical place. It has very nice windows and you can see ships hanged on for lightning. This church sometimes called Sailor's Church as it is the first thing a sailor can see when he or she approaches to Montreal with his or her ship.
A rather nice chapel dedicated to seafarers so there are ship models hanging from the ceiling. A walk up the tower is well worth the extra time and money.
We went for a String Quartet concert of Halloween music. Everything was perfect. The music, the atmosphere, the acoustics! Absolutely recommend checking it out!
History of the Oldest Chapel in Montreal, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours
Chapel's Facebook Page

A Historical and Heritage gem
For over 350 years, the Chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, a jewel of history and heritage, has made its way into the hearts of generations of visitors and pilgrims. As you step into the church, you will immediately notice the peaceful atmosphere and feel a palpable link to Montreal’s past. This chapel, built in 1771, was constructed directly on top of the first stone chapel of Montreal whos foundations were recently uncovered. This first chapel was originally a site of pilgrimage. This is also the site where officers of the British regime considered setting up barracks to house the military. This was a silent witness to the faith of Montrealers who rebuilt a chapel when it seemed impossible
The Notre-dame of Montreal is a must visit for any tourist. We visited the Notre-Dame for the sound and light show. This is an amazing show and must watch.
Beautiful old chapel that took my breath away the moment I stepped in. Incredible to believe this place is hundreds of years old as it's upkept so lovingly! Stunning architecture and truly humbling to think that a saint resides here.:) The gift shoppe located just off the actual chapel itself was also lovely to peruse and I left with a few new treasures after also seeing some of the artifacts on display in the hallway. I wish I had time to take a trip through the museum, but that will have to wait until I'm next in Montreal. Gorgeous chapel that's well worth the stop for history fans and pilgrims alike!
The votive lights are model ships, hanging from a truly unique ceiling. The chapels history is well laid out in the attached museum and the view over the old port is quite extraordinary.
People that worked here were SO friendly and accommodating. My Mom and I got there very late in the day on Dec 27th and were rushing to take everything in. They stayed open late just for us. So much history and great exhibits to take in. We could have spent 2-3 hours. Merci beaucoup from Texas!
Incredible gem right in the heart of old Montréal. If you get a chance to see a concert inside do it! The acoustics are stunning and the painted organ is amazing. The painted ceilings alone are worth the trip.
Great museum! One of my favourites in Old Montreal. You can climb all the way up to get a great view AND can also see guided tours of an archeological dig below the building. It is also very fairly priced!
Very welcoming and helpful of the staffs. 3 different zones of the tour, free Wi-Fi to download the introduction in English while touring. The crypt is historical and the tower has excellent views of old port, something you don't want to missed.
It was only $12 for this beautiful experience. The stairs to the top are very slim and winding and theres no rail. You must be a little adventures and determined. The result at the top is breathtaking and an awe moment to hold forever. The whole museum is stuffed with information and history.
Oldest cathedral in Montréal! The golden statue is clearly visible as you come down the street and the tomb inside is breathtaking. Well worth the free visit, and they offer a tour to the top tower as well for a charge
A very beautiful church in the old side of Montreal very close to the Old port. There is a museum here and you can enter for $7. They have an observatory deck all the way up. The church is beautiful inside. Very ancient style.
Very interesting museum, beautiful church and really gorgeous view of the Old Port of Montreal from a very unique balcony atop the church, overlooking de la Commune street.
Wow. What a stunning place to visit in Montreal! The inside holds so much beautiful talent and artwork. The shades of blue on the ceiling was just incredible. A must visit ️
Small chapel for sailors with boats hanging from the ceiling. Great frescoes on the ceiling and a nice European air. The access is through a cobblestone road. The stained glass is stunning. It has a museum and a tower with great views of the old port.
A nice little church by the St. Lawrence River. The facade facing the river does not do it justice as it looks rather run down. However, the front facade is interesting and the interior is well maintained. The stained glass looks impressive and the rest of the church is beautiful. We were short of time and did not really explore the rest of the area nor join the guided tour.
Something different and quiet away from the bustle of the street. Not what you expect from a museum in a church. There is no religious theme, nor icons, just a glimpse at the amazing life and times of a lady setting out to make a difference for others in this new land. The view and tranquility from the belfry is worth every penny. The crypt and discovered artifacts fascinating. The dolls house, incredible.
Wow, such a beautiful Chapel! We were even lucky enough to stop by when a organist was playing. We love to see churches, chapels and cathedrals, and this was definitely one of the more beautiful ones we saw on our trip to Montreal.
Nice history. See the place on the left? It is the hotel where Ben Franklin met with the French to get to help fight the British during our fight for Independence. He met with them multiple times.
Beautiful church and museum attached. Church felt sacred and holy, which can be challenging in the midst of tourism. Museum was well organized and the tower worth climbing to see the view and the Angels!
