Thanjai Restaurant

On Christmas Day, we dined at Thanjai and were pleasantly surprised by the swift seating despite the busy holiday. The restaurant's ambiance was basic, but the food was exceptional. The highlight was the Kothu Parotta, which was outstanding. We also savored the Chicken Chettinad with rice, a dish that was truly impressive. Service was prompt, giving us an authentic Tamil Nadu dining experience. Surprisingly, even the Indo-Chinese dishes like fried rice and Gobi Manchurian were perfectly prepared. The meal was definitely worth the cost. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed on Boxing Day, or we would have gladly eaten there again.

I am totally upset with the tanjay restaurant. I had ordered gobi Manchurian and vegetable noodles. The gobi Manchuria was like just cauliflower sabzi, and noodles was tasteless. Service, ambience was good. Mango Lassi was better.
But ultimately the food and the taste matters.

Was looking to have our first Thali lunch on a Sunday afternoon, but was a disappointment…with a lousy menu combination so no more *Thali lunch ever at Thanjai. The host who met my partner was not very pleasant and possibly felt troubled to see a new guest arrive at almost closing time. Sorry we will not make you unpleasant by coming again for lunch. Yet you guys are great I believe for snacks.
*a Thali is attractive with a combination that has literally nature’s diffèrent colours- the vegetables. All the combinations was tasteless and yellow except carrot being the different. You guys are better capable!

Quite frankly the best butter chicken I’ve had. The naan was amazing too. Excellent service, quiet atmosphere. Definitely a place to checkout if you are visiting Montreal and looking for Indian food.

My son and daughter in law brought me here for lunch.

My daughter in law who is Indian ordered for us, and everything was just fantastic.

We started with fried chicken with chili and samosas.

Then for mains we had the chicken Biryani, goat curry, chicken curry, basmati rice and naan.

Everything was delicious and fresh.

Saw Thanjai on maps and thought to go for lunch. Literally took 15 mins just to get seated when there was no crowd. Food took hour to come and only one waitress was there for long weekend. Coffee was literally cold milk with water, gobi looked like it was cooked yesterday, and flies were everywhere.atmosphere was fine and the waitress was kind but otherwise don’t recommend…

This is not authentic food of india.they have pictures of food on menu which is not what you get.they use the same base for all briyaani.for the price you pay not worth at all! Only dosa is ok at this place.don’t fool people who don’t know! The price must be very low for quality of food you serve!

We had medhu vada, onion Rava dosa, masala dosa. Excellent Very authentic South Indian taste. Highly recommend

Everything tasted extremely flavourful! Chicken 65 was so soft and juicy, the biryani rice could be eaten alone by itself, the tikka was just an add on. Certainly recommend everyone to come and eat here.

Noodles was good. Chilli parotta was the worst I tasted ever. Avoid this recipe. Dosa are ok but not salt on batter and chutney. Also management needs to take care of cleanliness. Lots of fruit flies flying around when we had dinner and they’re sitting on the water glass and foods. Very disappointed.

Definitely the best place for dosa in Montreal. We tried chilli chicken and chicken tikka dosa. Both were amazing. Liked the chilli chicken one the most. We also ordered the noodles. Fore noodles lacked spices and would have loved more heat. Flavours were spot on for dosas. They were tasty as well. Definitely recommended if you are up for some good dosa.

Tasty South Indian cuisine and good dosas. They also offer a cuisine similar to Hakka style, Manchurian chicken. Taste their fried cauliflower dish!

I had veg noodles here that tasted similar to the one had back in Southindia. So, this restaurant is for someone who likes to taste South Indian cuisine.

Taste of the food was not good. Price doesn’t match the quality and quantity of food. Service was good though.

Service offered was excellent especially Arvind and Shivani displayed the utmost professional ethics and put on the best service for us. Timely attending to all our needs and would like to comment on Arvind for taking feedback to improvise their service. Food served was delicious and would recommend to try thanjai Van Horne. Kudos to both!

Perfect podi idli, medu vada and coffee. Also enjoyed the chilli chicken. All covid rules are respected. Staff is courteous and friendly. Highly recommended!

An excellent place to relish South Indian cuisine. Food was very tasty and reasonably priced. My special thanks to Aravind, an aero space eng, working part time here. He was so humble and down to earth making us feel at home… thanks guys for a memorable evening!

The food that I ordered was a Idly Vada. What can go wrong in the most basic dish of the southern India.

Coconut Chutney- The biggest joke of restaurant. Hilarious is the fact they charge extra for it.
Sambar- Buy a packet of Gits and you get better taste and aroma.
Spicy chutney: The saviour comes with a powerful punch.
Idly: It inclined me to finish the meal.
Vada: First comes the drama we didn't had it an hour ago. But it's ready to be served. Guess what it tastes as if it's from the leftover from morning.

Goodluck to Authentic South Indian Restaurant.

Taste was fine. But whereas it isn't worth for the money we pay. The quantity was very less for the price they charge. We need to spend atleast 30$ for a complete meal which I feel they are costly.

One of the best South Indian restaurant I have come across, provides good service. Love the food, tons of flavors, Way too many choices of dosa, the portions are perfect. This would be my go to place when it comes to South Indian food, highly recommend others to visit the restaurant.

What an amazing hidden jewel for Indian food in Montreal! We were celebrating a birthday so they allowed us to bring our own cake. You can bring your own wine here too. The food was amazing, perfect spice and freshness. We ordered the vegetarian Thali which was ok it the dosas, pakoras and wadas were out of this world. They were very accommodating with our large group and even gave us complimentary dessert for the birthday girl. Would definitely visit again!

I have been here couple of times and I need to say about their worst Briyani. The briyani which they serve is not fresh at all. The pieces are not fresh & it is 100% reheated. They prepare Briyani once or twice in a week in their centralized kitchen and distribute the same to other other branches. They just reheat it using an oven before serving and calling it to be freshly prepared even though it is 2 or 3 days old. It has to be complained to Food Safety department as it threatens our safety. It has to be taken to the notice of health department. I am sure that the social media team will say this as as intentional review as they follow that as a regular habit while replying to negative reviews. Also they will say that none else have complained it on the same day. Please note that I said the same to waitress when I visited on Aug 19th, 7: 30 PM. To the extent, I requested her if she can show the kitchen area to check the same but the refused. Almost 50% of the food they prepare is not fresh. I hope that there is no use in complaining the same to restaurant management since their behavior is not good. Don't say that the restaurant was busy on so and so date in order to show the kitchen. It was not crowded & it might have taken just 2 minutes to show the same.

Best place to have an Indian meal. Make a reservation prior to the visit to beat the queue. Food and service is good. The staff and the manager are friendly. Ambience is great. All the dishes are delicious. Thalli, gulab jam, coffee, sambar and rasam are awesome. If you visit any part of Quebec and Montreal city with family and friends it is the best stop to have a meal. Even non-veg dishes are great.

All the foods I have tried so far were amazing. The chef was good, he prepared a dish that was our favourite not present in the current menu. Everything was amazing except communication with one of the waitress who came of very rude. And please try to add some dishes from the old menu to the new one (mutton chukka).

The service and food was good only until the place got crowded. The dosas that followed were not as good.

Average food. I ordered Shrimp Biriyani, it wasn’t that great.not authentic taste. Also ordered Manchurian mushroom, it was great

We were visiting Montreal for a leisure trip and were craving for Indian food when we came across Thanjai restaurant. After reading good reviews decided to dine in. We had such a wonderful experience here that we visited again before leaving Montreal. The first time we were served by Aravind. The second time we were served by a girl, forgot to ask her name, but both the servers were fabulous. The food was super duper yummy. After nearly 2 years we ate such beautiful South Indian food. First time we had ordered medu wada sambar, paper dosa and chicken chettinad with roti. Second time we ordered plain, mysore masala and spring dosa. All the items were finger licking delicious. Best was the masala tea we had. Highly recommend this restaurant for a great and memorable dine in experience if you’re craving for South Indian cuisine.

I was there with my friends and we ordered Paubhaji dhosa, Paneer chili, Rava masala dhosa and one more dhosa.
The guy took order and forgot to punch paneer chili in the system as well as we waited 35 minutes and then one of the staff member came and said they don't have Paubhaji dhosa so I replaced with paneer masala dhosa and after 5 minutes they came back and said they don't have that and for the meantime we were waiting for our paneer chili. Lastly I order paneer dhosa and after 15 minutes the guy gets paneer butter masala sabji and the starter which we were order first (Paneer chili) we got it at last.
They need to hire better staff also.

Wow, Mr. Kumaresan! Keep it up. They have great and authentic items on their menu. The chef Vijay Kumar made some delicious Medu Vadas and dosas and that I can ‘t believe I am eating that in the heart of downtown Montreal. Chicken 65 and Briyani is a must try and that I enjoy very much tasting all their dishes. The food is always tasty, the service towards the guests is efficient.

I really loved the food in this restaurant especially Rava dosa, Plain dosa are very good. I love the Sambar and Tomato chutney. We had both Lunch and Dinner. Moreover, their Service is the best. I really appreciate. Staffs are very friendly and having good patience.keep it up. Next time when I go to Montreal, I will definitely go to this restaurant.

Very good indian restaurant in montreal. Miniature thanjai temple, Great ambience, clean and good customer service. Parota Kothu was yumm.

Came to eat with my boys twice, we all ordered at the same time, we were done eating, one of my boys didn’t even get his food served, they were ready to come with the bill. The funniest part, we came 3 weeks ago and the same thing happened to the same person. Instead asking “Is everything okay? ” hundred times, just make sure it is!
