49th Parallel Grocery

Ok just because the general population are seniors doesn't mean we sleep all AM. Was in store at 0815. No Bananas, apples miss labeled, produce depart untidy wet floor. Bakery shelves empty but product sitting in bakery. Gal spent 10min to label at product for me. Display shelves empty and dirty. Meat depart very low stock, not good looking. Frozen dept poor selection of pizzas no more Chapmans products. I worked in grocery industry for 7years then the health dept for 30 yrs come n lets get it back to how it was when 49th.

I hate that they changed the washroom to non gender. Now, what used to be the ladies' room is disgusting, and men are urinating on the toilet seat. It sucks.

Price gouging: This used to be the 49th parallel and was bought by the islands own corporate conglomerate Country Grocer.

In the span of ONE WEEK after the acquisition they jacked up the prices on nearly everything in the store and my grocery bill went up 30%.

You're better off driving to Duncan or Ladysmith and not supporting this type of greed.

Besides being a great place to work, they have a good selection of grocery items, bakery dept & place to get beautiful flowers.

We are from Alberta and are staying on the Island for a couple of months. We are really enjoying this fantastic supermarket and are finding the prices comparable to home. It is a well appointed store in a small community. It even has underground parking for those who don't want to battle the elements (rain) while getting their groceries. Back for part of our second winter. Still one of our favorite supermarkets on the Island.

The parking lot wasn't cleared properly when it snowed last week and the snow was dumped into the handicap space preventing us differently abled folks from parking there. Very disappointed in whoever was hired to plow your parking area.

Today on New year's I suffered a very humiliating service at this west 49th location, given a gift card with no restrictions written on it, I go to buy things from that store. At the cash I am told that I can not buy certain things. But nowhere is it written on the card or on the sales bill or In the store. They literally tried to play victim to my disapproval of their behaviour towards a client and trying to force non existent rules on a client holding a gift card. The humiliation started with the assumptions of where I recieved this gift card with clients standing behind me being forced to another register as if I was an agressive client. Luckily I pulled out my camera and started filming them act in such a bullying manor to try and trigger a reason to kick me out. But cameras are very useful to film who's truly the aggressors. How dare they humiliate clients like that and they definitely hit the wrong guy, because this guys going to every agency I can find to get retribution for my obvious and filmed humiliation!

They don't deserve any business if they treat clients like that!

Horrible horrible people!

Very unprofessional deli workers listening to music with their ear pods in and too little staff always. I have to wait a long time if I ever want anything from deli because they simply don't have the staff either. I think I'll just go the extra mile to save on for faster service in the afternoons, plenty of deli staff there.

This store is awesome. I purchased more top end steaks on special, chicken, and bakery goodies than any other store. One stop shop for sure

Great local grocery store that has just about everything you need. Friendly helpful staff.

Was encouraged to buy Boston cream doughnuts that were on sale. The doughnuts were stale and filled with raspberry not cream phoned made a complaint wasn't allowed to speak to a manager just reimburse

Ok, I was there earlier today and I only counted 48 parallels. I could be wrong so maybe I missed one somewhere in the back and I'll try to count them again tomorrow.

Went to buy something and was given change of a $10 bill and 2 Twoonies I asked for 2 $5 bills for the $10 as I was going to a kids fund raiser at the school and needed smaller bills. Older lady with British accent said “no” I only have enough until I close at 5. I didn’t know what that means so asked again. She said “no I can’t do it”. I’ve never in my life been told I can’t have change for a ten. I like shopping local but will not go here anymore.

Nicest cut of meats I can find in Chemainus and Crofton area. The bakery has stepped it up a notch too and now offers nicely decorated single slices of cake.

A surprisingly 'big city' grocery store for the comparatively tiny town it lives in. Huge, well-maintained building, wide variety of products, friendly and helpful staff, and decent prices.

I would have given 5 stars, but they don't have nut milk in large containers only in tetra boxes!
I did ask a member of staff and she told me that they only sold the nut milk in tetra boxes, I looked in your dairy section but couldn't find any that's why I ask a member of staff!

This local grocery is the absolute best when it comes to customer service. The ladies in the florist department have been so nice and helpful, going above and beyond. Most recently I spoke to Caroline. She was so helpful and went above and beyond for my momma to get flowers on her 70th birthday. ️️thank you

Got some ham from the deli, it was good, I was tended to right away, and had my needs fulfilled, but there were a lot of flies in the deli and one landed on my meat and it had to be resliced, which kind of soured the good customer service.

An awesome grocery store, very community oriented and always willing to boost the markets it is in. Great management, and friendly staff!

Good place to shop and local, fresh produce and meat. Deli department definently need an attitude adjustment but the workers at the till are always nice.

Totally loved this store and how it is laid out! I thought the mini cart in the banana area was cute!

Such a disappointment again today. Wrong price yet again and staff that never care. The last time I shopped here before today I was NOT given the sale price for a sandwich I bought. I wouldn't have bought it if it was regular price, which is the price I paid. I got home and saw that I'd been overcharged.

Today, having learned my lesson, I checked the prices carefully. Overcharged on one item and another item rung in twice. I've been overcharged several times at this store and not once has any employee apologized or shown any care about the situation.

I'm not a price checker. Nor do I feel like holding up the line and waiting as someone goes to check the price.

I have shopped at Costco for years, and I have NEVER been overcharged for an item. How can Costco do it and stores like 49th and Superstore can't?

I won't be shopping at this store anymore.

Very pleasant and helpful staff. Good selection of produce, Deli and fresh baked goods. Nice atmosphere to shop in. I come from Ladysmith to enjoy the shopping experience. Also, the Riot Brewery is located in the same Shopping Centre.

COVID-19 protocol is not up to snuff, been to other grocery stores that have stricter COVID rules and feel much safer. Do not like shopping there any more and wish wearing masks would be more enforced.

Nice selection, super friendly, little bit pricy. Would be sweet if they head an omelette bar, eh? But never actually been to a grocer with one so can't really get too picky. Would maybe make the cartsmenship pretty awful if everyone was trying to cram an omelette while attempting a land speed record in the turnip isle.

Hands down one of the best grocery stores on Vancouver Island. Friendly helpful staff. Fresh produce and breads. Amazing selection of deli meats and cheeses great sales too!

My favourite Grocery store. Never have had a bad experience here. Great selection of food at a great price and value. My one stop shop when the family and I are up Island

Staff are friendly and its usually a pleasant experience shopping there.prices are alittle high but it's the only gig in town so take it or leave it lol

Good local small gocer, no membership or two tier pricing, good selection & prices for the size of the store, and AWESOME staff.

Thanks to the 49th for making the effort to bring in fresh local seafood! Today I picked up fresh Barkley Sound sockeye and kudos to the staff for responding positively when I asked for it to be wrapped in butcher paper rather than plastic and Styrofoam.

Decent selection of groceries prices are a little higher then in town but works for smaller shopping

Nice store and convenient to have in Chemainus. However the produce has taken a turn for the worst. Frequently soft and a little gross. I once picked up a bag of pearl onions and they imploded into a dust. Yuk
