Amazing exhibits. The collections are interesting and thought provoking. Lots of information to go with why the pieces were there. I could’ve spent the whole day there. The only thing I wish they have is a cafe with drinks and food so people can enjoy in the garden.
Amazing collection of works with detailed descriptions and spotlights on Canadian artists. Super great way to spend a couple of hours, particularly enjoyed the Symbiosis exhibit mushrooms! 5/5
Our group came specifically to see the Emily Carr collection but it is closed, banished to the basement with no plans to return it to public display. Disgraceful.
Very disappointed with this art gallery it's been since November I got a membership and I still have received it not have I hear a reply back from the gallery about this and I'm not going to renew my membership next year since this has been a terrible experience
I renewed my membership this week, looking forward to a visit to the Emily Carr gallery, which I have been to multiple times. Unfortunately it seems to have been closed down and replaced by another exhibit. I visited three exhibits in total but would not have made a special visit to the gallery to see any of these. Before I renew my membership again I will look into what the gallery is doing.
The staff were lovely and helpful when I had a question about an exhibition! I could have spent another hour in there! I was bummed out I didn't get to see some Emily Carr pieces, but apparently they've been taken down recently to double check their conditions, but the 3 exhibitions happening made up for it! Definitely worth visiting! Loved how knowledgeable they were! Thank you, staff!
Loved the Gallery exhibits, informative and thought provoking. The courtyard was a highlight with the beautiful shrine and the the gift shop has some amazing treasures.
One of best public art gallery in Victoria with rich history and host to ever popular Moss Street Paint In every July with artists and their artwork lining both sides of Moss Street to Dallas road.
We didn't realize it was family day when we visited, they had some good fun things for smaller kids to do and the gallery itself is a great way to spend a few hours of your day.
My family and I really enjoyed our visit. The various galleries and displays were thoughtfully arranged, and the atmosphere was so peaceful. We were especially impressed with the warm welcome we received by the gracious staff member at the lobby. Looking forward to returning for more exhibits.
Best possible place to spend a few hours while visiting Victoria. Zen like place. And super helpful friendly staff! 110% worth the visit! Thank you! Will recommend to my friends/family.
Joined as a member a few years ago to enjoy the diversity of their curated exhibitions. One of the most soothing places in Victoria to contemplate our hectic world and appreciate the beauty of art and what it can reveal. An amazing location to enjoy art and a stroll in the Japanese garden is a worthwhile addition to any trip.
Enjoyed my visit and reasonable entrance fee - it's larger than I expected. I spent about 45-60 minutes going through all the exhibits. Quick bus ride from downtown.
The AGGV has great exhibits, each is well designed, not too big and easy to digest. They've added some nuances to their Emily Carr exhibit in regards to her work and indigenous people and territory.
Situated in a very nice neighbourhood, this gallery houses a mixture of modern arts and more traditional pieces. The gallery is not very large.the exhibition halls are all lined up in the newer building. We started at the far end and made our way back toward the lobby. This happened to take us from the Samurai armour, through a blue-on-white ceramic exhibition to a couple of installation art halls. It was a nice stepping though arts and crafts in somewhat chronological line.the ornate gave way to the abstract. We also stopped by the Shinto temple outside. The garden setting was very peaceful and welcoming.
Tuesdays are FREE! A fairly small gallery; but, much variety, some very interesting new, innovative artists displayed, as well as historical displays from Japan, China. Gift shop has gorgeous merchndise, works of art themselves.
It's just cool. Well worth a visit. Staff are excellent, Emily Carr, Japanese garden, swords and artefacts, pottery, modern art, chill spaces, thought provoking exhibits in a cool building in a nice neighborhood.
Local artists on exhibition. The gallery is on the smaller size but it feels manageable and is a pleasant way to spend a wet day. Walking distance from downtown.
I would like to give accolades to the gallery from my professional perspective. I am a home stager and need to rent art for my work on a regular basis. This gallery is a great source of art rentals. I have been using the artwork supplied to the gallery by local artists for many years. The staff is very knowledgeable, the art is well curated, and the selection is great. New pieces are introduced to the rental department on a regular basis. I love the fact that I can support the gallery, local artists, and the same time make my work a pleasurable experience. Big Thank You to Karen Cooper, who is always very helpful when it comes to choosing artwork to fit a particular style of a house or a colour scheme. Overall, I cannot recommend this gallery high enough.
Urbanite- mix Emily Carr with techno dance music and an eclectic mix of people having a good time. Good drinks by local providers and fabulous art by Canadian artists.
Architecture of the building is a blend of a historic residence with a modern gallery. Views from the windows look out at pleasing garden spaces. Parking space is limited.
Not every art gallery leaves a positive impression on me but this one did. It may not be one of the biggest art galleries but it contains very valuable and impressive pieces of art. I especially loved the installation called Blue Skies by Megan Dickie. I wish I lived in Victoria to become a member. The place even has a garden with an old Shinto shrine installed!
The AGGV is quite small, but it manages to host very interesting exhibitions. The chief attraction at the moment if an exhibition places the works of Emily Carr, which are the gallery’s pride and joy, among works by a number of other artists who were in the modern tradition. The comparisons are fascinating. There are three other special exhibitions at present, each of them moderately interesting. The museum shop is very good, and a visit to Spencer House, the mansion in which the gallery began in 1951, is also worthwhile.
The gallery had a nice collection of Canadian masters, contemporary Indigenous artists, ceramics, and Japanese pieces, including katana, Samurai helmets, and a Shinto shrine. We enjoyed it and would definitely return.
Well worth the walk downhill to find this gallery. Not expensive and took under an hour to visit. Currently a good exhibition re forestry and photography.
The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria sits in a beautiful green space just outside downtown, easily walkable, a nice cycle, and on a bus route. What is not publicized widely is that there is a perfect old wooden Japanese Shinto Shrine resting in the back moss garden. What a surprise to find such a thing here. They say it is the only complete authentic Shinto Shrine outside Japan, and having lived in Japan I can say for sure it is certainly authentic. The surrounding moss really lends to the Japanese feel. Don't miss it if you visit the gallery. They also have lots of various events happening year round and the staff are very friendly. Great place!
When we visited only 2 main galleries had paintings, other than a random smattering of art in the old house portion. I enjoyed the Emily Carr exhibit and the Japanese prints but two other full galleries seemed to be for public consultation about the future of the institution, which is a great idea if you live there but not when you're from out of town. Nice gift shop!
