Has been my favorite choice for shanghainese food when i want a healthy meal that is fairly priced and made in high quality. Easy to park and in a convenient location are bonuses
29 December 2023 15:21
Food I always order at baiyulan: 1) veggie pork spring roll 2) crab 3) wonton chicken 4) spicy and sour soup
22 December 2023 19:39
Extremely unprofessional waitress who questioned our tip before we had paid

It is at lunch time around 2: 00, the bill is about $75.00, my mom paid $80 in cash, the waitress then said this is not enough with tips, but my mom means to leave the tips on the table instead. This is very upsetting.

Baiyulan Shanghai Cuisine is my absolute go-to for Shanghai food. Despite not residing in Richmond, I make the trip just for their delicious offerings. I've been a fan since it was Chen's Shanghai Kitchen. Highly recommend indulging in the Chilli Wontons, Signature Shanghai Style Soup Dumplings, and Sticky Rice Roll with Pork Floss. Don't forget to pair it with a hot soy milk. The Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup reminded me of a Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, wasn't spicy at all. The inclusion of a stamp card adds an extra layer of incentive, making my next return a highly likely one.

The price is reasonable and the quality is quite satisfactory. There is no need to wait for a table on Saturday night
23 June 2023 21:32
Usually go for lunch when I crave for Shanghai soup dumpling and Szechuan beef noodle. Tonight our family tried their dinner dishes. Taiwan style fried chicken very tasty but only a small pot! Black cod with black bean sauce is nice as well. Surprisingly the fried rice and veggie rice is too soft and sticky.

One of the best Shanghai restaurants around evident by the amount of take out. Try their signature Shanghai style pan fried pork bun. The pan fried Shanghai noodles were also very yummy. Food is always hot and fresh. The servers are friendly unlike some other restaurants in Richmond. The pork chop noodle soup was a little bland but some people prefer it that way. Go early because the parking lot fills up fast.

My only issue is they don't accept credit cards. It's debit or cash only.
11 February 2023 5:29
Decent portion sizes for the price. We ordered takeout and it was very well packed. The food was so flavourful and delicious. Maybe skip the sticky rice, and just an FYI the hot and sour soup has a few peanuts. Kind of strange to me, but I didn’t hate it.

Overall, would eat again.

Hot and sour soup with dumplings 8/10
Shanghai soup dumplings 10/10
Beef wrap 10/10
Sticky rice with pork floss 5/10
Shanghai pan fried pork buns 9/10
Crystal shrimp dumplings 9/10

Had lunch here with my family. This is our favourite place for Dan Dan noodles and XLB. Definitely recommend!
01 December 2022 16:24
Dumpling, noodles, and fried rice are all delicious! Been craving dumplings for months and this was the place that finally satisfied the hunger.
18 November 2022 11:49
The food was pretty good, just not a fan of places that pushes people to just pay by cash and conveniently say their internet may not work.
03 November 2022 23:53
Great food, tasty and not expensive.
For sure will come here more.
Great Shanghai style food.
01 August 2022 19:20
I have been coming to Bai Yu Lan for over 10 years now, even at their previous location way back. I can say with confidence that this place has the best Xiao Long Bao in all of Vancouver.
23 July 2022 12:25
Took my family here for a late afternoon lunch. The food quality was good. Xialoong boa had lots of soup, very good. Their drunken chicken was okay, but I had better. Overall, I would recommend to give them a try. They do have big menu and we only tried 3 items as it was a light lunch.
19 June 2022 19:51
Food pretty good but service pretty sucks. The table next to me left foe half hr, the waitresses didn't clear the dishes and clean the table, but just standing and chatting with each other, i been a restaurant manager for 20 yrs, never seen servers like that
29 May 2022 1:47
Haven't been there for over a year so thought that I would give it a try again.didn't quite like it the previous 2 times since they moved to this location.and still wasn't impressed. Service was just OK. Food-quality though, definitely went downhill. Xiao long baos were somewhat juicy but not that flavourful. The fried pork dumpling skin was thick and came out quite oily and not crispy at all. Also ordered the fried bread roll.it was poorly deep fried, drench with oil and the texture was bad.didn't have the strands of bread inside that you normally would get. Will not be going back for awhile.

I wanted some Shanghainese breakfast on our way to Vancouver and this place is open earlier than other Shanghainese restaurants. We were the first ones here and waited around 25 min for food. The waitress was friendly but didn’t check on us or anything during the meal. The salted soy milk was bland and had very little topping on it. The onion pancake was also bland and not very flaky. The soupy dumplings (小笼包) was just ok. The best item was pan-fried bao (生煎包). The weirdest item was the sweet rice roll which normally comes with pickles veggies and curlers inside but this one comes with over sugared rice and sugared curlers which was not bad necessarily but very unusual.
07 May 2022 1:36
Enjoyed our crispy noodles with chicken, spareribs and shrimp dumpling. Different than what I am used to but much better.
18 April 2022 2:02
My 1st try here. Socially distance, clean but 3.5 * for service. They forgot 1 dish but lucky we were full already. Came for a late lunch 2: 45. Ordered classics xlb moderate thickness skin, panfry dumplings, fried pork and noodle and think noodle. All in all good. Will come back as its reasonable price these days.
12 April 2022 0:39
Ordered near Lunar New years and received above and beyond service.

We ordered the dandan noodles and the rice cake with shepherds purse and shredded pork. They included two tea drinks and a box of goodies with a coupon for free! It was a great surprise.

The rice cake dish was good but I wish there were more of the veggies on it. The veggies bring flavor and with not much of it, then it just tastes like regular rice cakes.

The dandan noodles were a huge portion. Good nutty flavor but I prefer a little more spicy.
01 April 2022 7:23
Menu system and ordering is very confusing, but the food is very good. Service is slow and horrible. They never check on you and food comes out haphazard if it comes at all.
02 March 2022 15:18
Alright, ordered the fried noodles, spicy sour soup and soup dumplings, 5/10, also quite expensive.
10 January 2022 16:04
Mediocre shanghainese food and service. The only better dish was the xiao long bao (XLB). Beef roll was soggy and looked like it was run over by a car.
31 December 2021 8:49
So disappointed with the service. Wait for the food so long after ordering. Server didn’t even help to follow up on my order. Seems they just serve take out orders.
15 September 2021 20:22
Great Shanghainese food for dine-in or take out. Service was quick and staff were polite at the front pick-up table. They have great signature Shanghai style soup dumplings (小笼包) and pan-fried pork buns (生煎包).
14 September 2021 3:56
Try the Jelly Pork! The best deal is the Jelly Pork Noodles ($10.95) the Jelly Pork is easily the best in town.

The Shanghai soup dumplings (steamed is also top notch). I found the pan fried ones to be good for Vancouver standards but nothing beats Yang's Fried Dumpling in China (not in North America)

I am not sure why this place is rated relatively low but every dish has impressed me even as a Shanghainese person.

The chef specials are where it's at! Try the best items on the menu. It is inconveniently located outside but look at my photo.
06 September 2021 9:13
Excellent fast and friendly service. There is ample seating both indoors and outdoors. Shanghai thick pan fried noodles were extremely greasy, maybe request less oil. Creamy custard buns were quite dry. Our favourite were the pan fried dumplings, chili wonton and xiao long bao. Drinks were cold and freshing as well. Overall a good restaurant to try.
07 August 2021 15:14
Authentic Shanghai food with good price. Very tasty will definitely come back again. Highly recommend
28 July 2021 23:10
I always get their deep fried rice cake, Chinese donuts, and stir fried shanghainese broad noodles. The owners are from Shanghai so the food is as authentic as it gets. Still have outdoor seating and usually lots of parking.
05 July 2021 12:03
Food was generally salty. I was told they were much better before. My family wasn't very happy. Service is not very attentive. Food came very sporadically and had to wait for food between food which really was annoying. It's clean and bright though. The only plus.
13 June 2021 7:26
We ordered the 2 course Peking Duck for delivery and absolutely loved it! Eating this brought back lots of good memories of our time spent in China. Perfectly packaged for take out. I can’t wait for another special occasion so we can order this again. Highly recommended.
14 November 2020 22:13
Prices are higher than nearby restaurants serving similar foods. That put way too much seaweed in their soy milk. The fried pork pieces are full of fat and overcook. Service is excellent.
17 February 2020 21:11
Service is as friendly as before, but the food quality goes straight down comparing to the original location, it is kind of sad to see the restaurant could not keep up the good work.

We thought it may be our bias (for the first time visiting the new location), so we gave it a second try 2 weeks later, and we can confirm that this is not the baiyulan we used to enjoy and love (shrug)
07 February 2020 10:42
Not as good as it used to be and a bit more expensive compared to other Shanghai spots in Richmond. Dumplings were juicy but the skin was a bit thick.
31 January 2020 0:26
Doesn't appear to be affiliated with the original restaurant. Didn't recognize any of the staff or the food. Disappointed. Pricey for the quality of food. Good service, though.
22 January 2020 4:42
Food quality is not as good as the orignal Chen's. Very inconsistent quality. Sometimes good. Sometimes ok. Sometimes horrible. I stopped coming here since Richmond has many better places.
21 January 2020 13:45
This is got to be the Best Shaghainese Cuisine in Vancouver. The taste is incredible.

We had the Tan Tan Noodles, which had black sesame seeds, which gives it another level of taste. After the noodles were consumed, it was sad to see that there was so much sauce leftover. A suggestion might be the option to add noodles at a small surcharge.

We also had the Steam Dumplings (Siu Lung Pao), which was so juicy. You have to be careful, because it has so so much juice.

We followed that up with the pan fried dumpling (San Cheen Pao), which is not usually juicy, but this one was.

Overall. Loved the food. The service is another story. Friendlier staff would be better.
31 December 2019 1:07
My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for the past two years. Love the food and no complaints about the service. I even bought my girlfriend's family here for dinner for our first meeting. Was very pleased with the experience.
24 December 2019 13:12
Our friend who lives nearby told us about this place when we asked for a good place to eat in Richmond (trick question).

We heard the XLB (小籠包) was really good and juicy. But when we got there, they were sold out. There were also nobody there.

They had plenty of options so we tried them too. Stuff like Taiwanese beef noodles, a speciality in Taiwan and other chinese province specialities.

Sadly it didn't taste anything like the one in Taiwan. And the food was very expensive for Richmond too.

The staff were nice- kind of. But I don't know if will come back. I guess I'll go to Pearl House, or Strike the next time I'm in Richmond.
24 December 2019 0:02
With so many options in Richmond, I'm sure not to visit this place again. Food is quite mediocre and service not that great even though we went off peak hours.
19 December 2019 0:57
Friendly staffs and they handle peak hour very well. I come to this place often.
Once in a while you might get a dish that is inconsistent (taste wise), that's the only thing I think could use some improving. Other than that 95% of the time food would be perfect!
27 September 2019 7:32
Terrible attitude and service. Food is ok. I've been to some Chinese restaurants with bad service, and I've gotten used to it. But this place takes the cake. The waitress refused to take our order by voice and demanded that we use the sheet and paper. And when they made a mistake and forgot a item on the order, they slammed the order sheet down in front of us in frustration even though it was their fault. The food tasted good but the prices were a bit on the high end. 2 stars because the food was good. Service is 1 star.
16 September 2019 17:31
Don't come here if you are hungry and don't have hours to waste. 1: 30 on a Friday. There's ONE waitress working 9 tables. We sat for 15 min before they brought tea and a menu.

Just looked around the room and there are literally tables holding up their empty teapots in the air to get attention. So ridiculous. Maybe spend a little more on staff and a little less on tacky decor
23 August 2019 7:06
I have eatened at this restaurant since 10 years ago and it was one of my favorite places to eat out with my mom. I finally had a chance to visit the restaurant again after their reopening and was sadly disappointed. The food is now overpriced with small portions, with surprisingly below average food quality. 蔥油餅 was very dry and bland. 粢饭 was not wrapped properly with the 油條 almost completely showing, and it had too much rice. I can get better Shanghai food at the food court. Really wanted this place to be good, sad that it is nowhere close to how it used to be. Will not come here again.
27 July 2019 0:59
Service: 4 star
Wonton and soup noodle items: 3 star
Drunken chicken: 0 star

If you want a place to chat with friends and don't mind the food quality, i will recommend this place.
26 July 2019 3:25
I will preface this review by saying that I absolutely LOVED the old location/restaurant. I grew up with the food (XLB and all that good stuff) from not only the previous location this restaurant was at, but the location before that as well (if my memory serves me correctly, this has been the second move in the past decade). I have plenty of endearing memories from my childhood that are tied to this place, which is likely why I am writing a review today (which I rarely do, if at all ever).

From my experience at the restaurant over the past 4-5 instances that I have dined at the new location, I have left nothing short of disappointed each time. The extremely friendly waitresses from before have been replaced by an uptight and unpleasant serving staff that has really made this restaurant lose its ability to be a pleasant place to eat and to entertain guests. The food no longer tastes the same - at first, I thought this may have been a function of my changing palette, but this notion seems to be corroborated by the countless reviews also criticizing the food at the new location. My favorite dish personally, the braised chicken noodle soup, tastes extremely watered-down and completely different from what I remembered it to be 2-3 years ago. Everything on the menu seems to have taken an inflation + 30% price increase, which I doubt is a sole function of increasing food costs (while such is understandable, I would expect the food to at least maintain its quality from 2-3 years ago if I am paying a 30-40% premium from what I did back then - this has not been the case). The new location would not have the slightest chance at competing against the excellence that was the old Chen's.

Despite the above paragraph, I am still giving this place a solid five stars, which is more of a function of the greatness of the old location rather than the excellence of the new (I know this logic is flawed given the fact that I am supposed to be reviewing the new location, but I can't bring myself to grant a lower rating). If anything, I am not disappointed by the performance of the new location - rather, more so heartbroken. The Chen's of today, in my opinion, has fallen victim to the mass commercialization of Lower Mainland businesses attempting to capture a bigger piece of the pie, a pie that has been made dramatically larger over the past decade by the massive capital influx into the region. However, I don't fault the owners for pursuing such a path as I think most individuals in their shoes would have pursued the exact same 1) re-location, 2) re-branding and 3) pricing at a premium to capture a new clientele, and in turn making greater profits, strategy.

That said, this post is not a criticism of the restaurant or its owners, but perhaps a reminder to those who are quick to criticize the restaurant and its food that times change and that we likely won't be getting back the old location. The bottom line is that times change, the old waitresses are gone and the food is subpar. There is no point of further berating the restaurant or its food - instead, a more productive endeavor would be to support smaller Shanghainese institutions in Richmond that have a similar approach to the restaurant business as the old Chen's once had. On that note, please feel free to send me a message (or whatever messaging service is used on this platform) if you have any recommendations for extremely high-quality Shanghainese cuisine that has any semblance to the old Chen's. I'd like for my loved ones today who have never tried the old Chen's and my future kids to experience the feeling of what a fresh, piping hot XLB dumpling served by an extremely pleasant waiter/waitress tastes like, after having witnessed its construction five minutes prior through a window demonstrating the craftsmanship. I know that as strange as this sounds to people who have never been to the old Chen's, I would bet good money that there are people on here that are furiously nodding in agreement right now.

If you like Shanghai foods and which is a good place for u to go. The food and service is right at average. I found some of them is too salty for my taste but since it is different opion for everyone.
20 July 2019 21:44
Delicious shanghai cuisine. The place is not very big, but does not get too full either. Price range is also very reasonable. Will definitely come again
07 June 2019 16:18
Spacious, bright and clean restaurant with fantastic food! My favourite dish was the Dandan noodles, they were absolute perfection! The XLBs, and Drunken Chicken were also very delicious. 10/10 would come here again!
15 May 2019 21:30
Despite being served raw meat in the pan fried dumpling (seriously raw), the mediocre steam dumplings couldn’t make me give this place a 2 star rating. However the fish and the veggie rice was so good I’m torn wether to recommend this place. The place tries to look fancy but use plastic plates and bowls makes it feel kinda cheapy.

Despite the fish being amazingly fresh and tasty it costs like $40. So this place is a solid 2.5 stars. Man that fish was good. It was super juicy and flakey. The skin was perfectly crispy and texture awesome. The sweet and sour sauce includes shrimp, pineapple, pinenuts, onions and mixtures of peppers (cut small bite sizes). That fish was fricken good.
