Honestly the pastries look better than they taste. I’ve given this place a try at least 3 times and there hasn’t been anything that I really like. You can go down to Main Street and find much better options for pastries. That being said I haven’t had any of the sandwiches. The shop does have some really cool stuff to add to your own pantry.

I’m not a fan of filled croissants as they are all too sweet for my liking. However, I do like plain butter croissants and I think Batart Bakery has the best butter croissant in town. I have been craving for Batart’s butter croissant for a while so today, my husband drove all the way from Burnaby to get them for me. At the shop, he ordered two plain butter croissants, one Pain au Chocolat and one double baked almond. When he got home and opened up the box, the two butter croissants that he ordered for me were not in the box. Instead, there were two Pain au chocolat, one double baked almond and one what looks like to be a blueberry croissant. Needless to say, hubby was shocked and we are both very disappointed. This was a very unpleasant and frustrating experience.

My favorite shop to go have breakfast, a coffee and to enjoy a croissant or dessert. Outstanding quality of most of their products.
02 October 2023 14:38
What a cute little shop that sells take home items as well. Their pastries are very delicious! The croissants are fluffy and the loaf of breads are super good! They also have hot items like soup and sandwiches as well! Definitely will go back! The only downside is the store closes so early.

A cozy place to hang out with a friend and enjoy fresh pastries and strong coffee. Take out or eat in, it's all delicious and worthwhile.
16 May 2023 15:30
Delicious baked goods, sandwiches, soups, coffee, and homemade goods. Cute well known place on Fraser.
29 April 2023 7:13
No public wifi which is very behind for a cafe in 2023. Myself and another lady had to scramble to leave to get work done, should be advertised for a large cafe that they don’t want any remote workers in their cafe
07 April 2023 14:55
Was there on a weekend. Very wonderful and also very busy and crowded. Long lineup, and lots of people crammed together waiting for a table in the eating area. I took my purchases home to enjoy, and they were fabulously tasty! I'm glad the bakery is so popular and successful, but I'm hoping to find a quieter time to visit!

It is pricy for what it is. The atmosphere is of course a trip to Europe, and it all appears so delicious and good BUT: the espresso we ordered was cold. Cannot understand how that even happens, but it was cold. The almond croissant looks great but it's kind of flat, tasteless, and zero soft, too hard. The pear gallete pastry was ok but nothing exceptional, especially for the prices. The service is alright, nothing outstanding either. I had high expectations and definitely those were not met.
04 March 2023 18:05
You have to try their kouign amann, buttery and crispy as it should be. Their baguette is very crispy too and tasty. Will be back!
27 February 2023 18:57
Product is second to none, but service can be very slow. Great to have a woke hairy arms and nail polished barista, but wish I didn't have to wait 15 min for a latte. Wait times are a thing, but I guess it's worth the quality every time? Just don't be un a hurry there. Hoping to update to a better review in the future.

This bakery has a variety of baked stuff and pastries.they are beautiful in terms of look and taste. The bakery is beautiful from outside and beautiful from inside. Nicely decorated and has lots of food products that are sourced and made locally. The display of the baked goods is beautiful. The service is great and the staff are wonderful. The seating area is beautiful. There is nothing perfect but this place had it.hard to find anything to criticize. If, for some crazy reason, I'm forced to live in there, I think I will be very happy and well fed. In other words, if there are spots of heaven on this planet, this would be one of them lol
14 January 2023 12:20
Great bakery. Lots of delicious pastries and breads. There is a seating area on one side of the store. Parking is hard to find on Fraser, the side streets have free parking if your willing to walk. I went here on a Saturday before noon so it was quite busy, I waited around 10-25mins.
24 December 2022 16:32
A very beautiful place, well decorated, excellent product quality the only problem the rude, cold attendants I left there with the feeling that I was discriminated against for being a foreigner. The attendant answered everyone with a smile, in my turn with a cold and rude manner. Unfortunate! I will give it a second chance in the future and hope the company trains its employees better.
01 October 2022 22:22
I got a cheese and egg galette (I believe that’s what it was called), it was very dry and hard, not much flavor. Oat cappuccino was okay. Pricey.
01 October 2022 4:42
Being French I can't give more than 1 star to this wannabes viennoiseries! I got an Almond Croissant which was hard as a rock and a chocolate croissant which was very plain! Even a frozen one from Whole Foods tastes way better. I also tried Kouign Amann that tasted totally bland! No buttery taste! I tried those before in Bretagne and in Paris, it was really buttery and full of flavor. At this place it is just a fluffy bakery. Pillsbury alike. Let's not talk about the rude Asian cashier that handles cash and food at the same time. When I asked about the almond croissant hard as a rock, she through me a dirty look, And aggressively warmed it up. It still tasted totally ordinary.not worth $5! Finally I tried the Honeycomb croissant and flan and I recommend them to just stop fooling people by pretending it is a French bakery! This is a lie or the owner should fire the Asian Boulanger!
All the workers there are Asian and for sure not from France nor speaks French. They only copied the rudeness of the French service without the quality or taste! Please get ride of the mean cashier and hire a real French Boulanger or else don't call yourself a Boulangerie!
20 September 2022 0:59
Holy moly what happened here! Pandemic hit this place hard! My tea now comes in a paper cup! Yuck! No more little teapots. No more old books to read while you amble away your life. Bring it all back Batard! If not you're just a reasonably good cafe that has some interesting bread and food selections and a self-serve grab and go cold shelf that is priced like whole foods!
08 September 2022 5:25
I haven’t tried any food or baked goods but this place is visually so satisfying. The oat milk latte tasted like pure milk though and the barista looked to be in an extreme bad mood argh. The cashier was delightful though, gotta come back to try the food!
22 August 2022 21:07
This unique charming french bakery is one of Vancouvers best kept secrets. The wonderful sourdough bread is the best. The lunches are delicious and the espresso superb. The decor makes you feel you are in a french cafe and the staff are friendly.
17 July 2022 14:48
Tasty chocolate-rye cookie, and no doubt tasty muesli, but I didn’t even get to try their spelt bread as it’s only sold on weekends and apparently still contains some wheat flour anyway, which makes me bloated. Finding good wheat-free (*not* gluten-free) bread in Vancouver seems nigh impossible, and wherever I do find some it’s a one-off that never sticks around.

This was never a problem for me in Europe and specifically Austria, where bakers know that wheat is just one of many gluten-containing grains; it doesn’t have to be in every single loaf of quality bread.: (
15 July 2022 5:55
I really enjoyed both the almond croissant as well as the partial loaf of bread I picked up. It may not be the best croissant or sourdough loaf in the city but I’d say it’s in the top five

That being said, I wasn’t as impressed with the flat white. To me it had a slightly burnt taste to it, serves me right for mostly frequenting those coffee forward places in town
18 June 2022 9:24
Delicious fresh pastries! The Spinach feta goat cheese scone with fresh americano coffee- a great way to start a sunny day!
12 June 2022 10:27
So glad to have discovered another wonderful bakery. The honeycomb was the best! And the double-baked almond croissant was delicious.
27 May 2022 6:24
Nice bakery with a variety of baked goods and a smaller selection of dine in and grocery items. Most of the sweet baked goods I’ve tried have been very nice. Savoury items slightly above average. Friendly service, atmosphere and nice cappuccinos.
However, as others have noted, some items like baguettes haven’t been ready first thing in the morning - which can be annoying.
22 April 2022 19:59
Amazing bakery! Love going here for a coffee and pastry with friends:) I also love that they have high chairs for our little girl!
19 April 2022 2:45
I love French and European pastries, but they're not to my liking. Pastries are too baked. I expect them to be light gold or yellow, not brown.
09 April 2022 15:08
They have the best pastries but the service is insanely slow! Why is there only one till open on a Saturday afternoon? I waited for 15 minutes today and the line didn’t move, so I had to leave
08 April 2022 13:08
Love their pastries, Croissants. If you are Chocolate lover, TRY Chocolate tart! Won't regret it.
06 April 2022 20:47
Wonderful croissants here. The classic croissant is crisp on the outside, light and flakey inside. You can't go wrong with the double baked croissant and you can taste the quality of chocolate they use in the chocolate version too.

Less 1 star for the wait time.
05 March 2022 10:56
This bakery is outstanding. One could easily notice the amount of efforts and commitment to exceed customer satisfaction. Never fails on any level. Bravo and you deserve best of success.
Always a joy to drop by.
24 November 2021 18:41
Didnt visit the shop but my bf shared a cake with me.omg it was surprisingly delicious. Tho we had a fine dinning in a fancy restaurant but i do think the cake from Batard is the best!
21 October 2021 1:02
Good bread, pastries, soups. I would avoid their cheesecake though. It has this weirdly thick, dense, gummy base. Also there's barely any actual cheesecake custard part.
22 September 2021 2:47
Amazing service and amazing food:) talked to the owners and they really know what they're doing! Food is a little pricey but worth it for the experience and quality they provide:)
04 August 2021 7:43
Wow. Horrible experience. Been a regular over past 4 years. Always gave big tips. They had just closed. I didn't realize and knocked on the door thinking it was new Covid rules. When the woman told me they were closed and I saw how recently they had closed I asked if I could give them cash and get a loaf of bread. She said no they had cashed out. I asked if they could show me this kindness and let me pay cash for the next day. She just kept saying no. Would have been so easy to make my day and she chose to close the door. I still can't quite believe it. Again. Wow.
24 July 2021 23:36
Amazing bread, possibly best in Vancouver (depends on type you want). Always get a Kouign Amann when I am there.so tasty!
17 July 2021 21:36
A exceptional find & we have been traveling in from Richmond for years. Great staff & the best of breads and superior baked goods. The ambience is a invitation to stay awhile & enjoy this wonderful little gem.
04 July 2021 7:08
One of my favorite places to go for lunch and coffee. Their breads and baked goods are well made and taste great.
12 June 2021 13:32
Amazing food, bread, pastries and coffee but the waits are sometimes too long and they don’t seem over concerned with someone waiting 15 minutes to buy a dozen eggs. Happens 50% of the time. I’m also fairly impatience - so this could be of a “me” issue. But it would be nice for a barista to start my coffee while 3 people are trying to serve a confused patron who doesn’t know what all the pastries taste like. Perhaps that is the charm of this place.and it’s often worth the wait.
04 June 2021 21:01
French rustic baking with breads and pastries with well-curated prepared foods section.

Good covid precautions. Advanced ordering is encouraged.
15 May 2021 22:50
Their croissants are very close to the authentic French ones (at $4.50 a piece these are about 30-40% more expensive than other similar quality croissants in Vancouver). I was disappointed to have driven 20 minutes one-way just to spend $7.50 on undercooked bread dough - the skin was crunchy and great, but the inside could've been in the over for an additional few minutes. Overall, the baked goods looked good, however, because of their higher than average prices and the suboptimal bread dough, today's experience gets a three star rating.
08 May 2021 22:28
My top 3 favourite local stores since moving to this new neighbourhood! The pastries are so yummy. The staff are very friendly and eager to help, yet very productive, not overly chatty. The shop is pretty to look around while being in the line.

So happy that we have Batard in this area. No need to travel to downtown, Yaletown or Kits for high quality French pastries anymore!

It will cost me more from now on, comparing to using my stand mixer. But this is a good problem to have for me!:)
05 February 2021 3:29
I was surprised to see a few 4 stars, once I read their reviews I see nothing in them worth 4.
This is a five star bakery all the way! Amazing food, excellent service! How people buy typical bread when bread of this quality is available is beyond me.
30 December 2020 22:19
I was fortunate to be gifted a loaf of raisin walnut bread from here. Truly a delicious treat! Thanks Batard! We also had a couple of desserts which were exceptionally decadent and delicious.
22 December 2020 20:00
Due to covid not many choices. They need to pick up their game as other places are offering more baked goods. Very pricey and not good value. My apple tart pastry was soggy meaning not fresh at at 5.75 felt ripped off. They like to focus on bread and their bread is good. There are other places with better food and good value.
09 April 2020 7:18
Yummy but always busy when I have been here for quiet get together with friends - unfortunatly not so quiet then.
30 March 2020 13:26
25 March 2020 18:38
Delicious quiche there, very nice to have breakfast and coffee. They have good, fresh bread every day. Love it
13 March 2020 9:44
Their lattes are probably one of the best I've had! Love the atmosphere and the people who work here.
12 March 2020 10:05
Where to start? So many choices for lunch, great attention to detail, the French dip roast beef sandwich was perfect. Communal seating as well as individual tables, amazing pastries and coffee. Takeout available and French ingredients for purchase. Great ambience and staff.
11 March 2020 16:43
Amazing place, great coffee, pastries, & service. However they don't have WiFi, so it's not the kind of place you can sit and work at.
05 March 2020 0:28
So delicious. Tried their duck sandwich, croissant, cinnamon bun, and Assam black tea with fog. Fast and friendly service.
29 February 2020 1:08
Went for a breakfast, so coffee and pain au chocolat for me and my husband had the croque Batard, basically fried egg with cheese and bread - both were excellent. We chose a quiet time to go there, 10 am midweek in January, which was a welcome change, since during past visits it's been very busy. The atmosphere is typical cafe style, cozy and welcoming. Staff attentive and friendly. Unfortunately our coffees were disappointing, mine borderline marginal. We didn't buy any bread, although my past experiences buying bread there have been positive. I would have rated it 5 stars if the coffee was better. If you want an alternative for buying bread try the Polish Bakery or the Russian Bakery about 3-5 (?) blocks on the same side of Fraser Street. All three are excellent bakeries, and provide a nice variety between them.
21 January 2020 11:02
Dark mocaccino is a must when you visit this place! Lots of variety to choose from, friendly staff and good ambiance. Kudos to the artisans!
13 January 2020 11:57
The rotisserie chicken was moist, the sandwich itself though I found needed the soup for sure for dipping as definitely took effort to bite through, not sure if you can ask for a different bread but will try that next time. There were no spreads just the chicken and bread. The soup was really good. They had a wide range of pastries that also looked good. There is primarily communal seating here and the place is quaint and cozy, it was refreshing to not see one laptop and people talking or reading the paper. Friendly service. $$.
04 January 2020 4:13
Great place! I’m here every week for coffee, bread, pastries. Also recommend their prepared plates with vegetables and dip.
31 December 2019 5:39
This bakery does bread exceptionally well! Beautiful variety of breads! Unfortunately, I don't have the same praise for the pastries, many of which are just ok.
22 December 2019 8:27
Their bread is so good! Only thing is I wish they didn’t charge like 15$ for a plate you grab from the fridge. The lettuce and stuff gets kinda soggy: (so sad because their food is so good fresh
10 December 2019 3:19
Part tea shop, retro bakery, deli and cozy cafe. Great menu, delicious baked goods and lots to look at. Had a farm house feel!
04 December 2019 22:13
Best bread in the city, good menu, great baked goods and nice seating/atmosphere. Only draw back is the crazy inconsistency with the staff taking and filling orders - sometimes you luck out and get a lovely and efficient experience. But there have been a noticeable number of times when staff talk to each other but ignore waiting customers or give service without breaking their conversation with their co- workers. Not to give a greeting or ask what the customer wants? To me this is a bummer - dismissive and rude. But some staff are great, and honestly the bread is fantastic so I keep going. I'd give five stars if customer service was more consistent.
02 November 2019 13:04
Love the bread here as well as the deli fridge. The croquet Madame is "deconstructed" but still amazingly good.
02 November 2019 4:08
I am not a sweet tooth, but their "pain au chocolate" keeps me coming back, especially the double baked one. Breads are also Amazing.
24 September 2019 10:59
Chocolate almond croissants are amazing. Regular croissants are really good but a tad greasy. Kouign aman is also a stand out. Will be back to try some fruit tarts and other pastries.
20 September 2019 15:20
Cosy little French bakery. Delicious pastries. Their croissants are buttery and flaky. Good place to just sit back, have a coffee and pastry and read. Definitely worth visiting.
17 September 2019 14:49
I brought my friend from Quebec here and she said it really felt like we were sitting in a cafe in Paris somewhere on the Champs Élysée. Also found out it was started by a guy named Chris Brown (not the singer) but I still give brownie points
29 July 2019 12:04
The place itself is so so cute! My go to is the croque Batard which is a MUST get - also their almond croissants never disappoint.
12 July 2019 17:59
Friendly service along with great selection and quality. Some stuff gets sold out by early afternoon so call ahead if you want to be sure.
