Black Bird Schnitzel Haus

This is "The Secret Place" where locals take out of town guests. The food and service are very good but the dining area is small so make sure you call ahead. The menu is German as the name suggests and and everyone that we have taken there has always happily cleaned their plate. Delicious!

Went there this evening for a double birthday dinner. All our meals were excellent and served promptly by a very friendly and efficient server. Little bit noisy but it is a small venue. Welcomed by the owner at the desk and the chef took time to come and talk to me when I had a question. Great place, food and service. Dance schoen all round

Great German food. Service is friendly and efficient. They now carry Mt. Arrowsmith Brewing bottled beer. High vaulted ceiling makes it very noisy. Not ideal for a quiet intimate dinner.
(Update - Nov. 2023) The owner came by our table before we were served and somewhat presumptuously told us that we would be having the best schnitzel we've ever had. This came across as arrogant and we have not returned in the last 5 years. It was good, but not the best we've ever had, which was at Chives Bistro in Pitt Meadows, years ago.

It is one of the better restaurants to visit in Qualicum Beach, with fair prices and large servings. It is always busy, so you may wish to reserve.
The servers are fabulous.

Dinner tonight was delicious! We will definitely return. Authentic and a very large menu selection. Our server Gemma was superb, efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. All in all a lovely dining experience!

Great selection, great tasting, large portions - keep wanting to try the strudel for dessert but am always too full.

Great restaurant with a good selection of schnitzels with side dishes. There are also German and Austrian beers and fine desserts. The service was very friendly. A table reservation is absolutely recommended!

It's tough to find good schnitzel in Canada, certainly didn't expect it way out here. But this place was amazing. Great pretzels, schnitzel, and spaetzel!

Took my Poppa there for Father's Day. Schnitzels (Oscar & Munich) were tasty and had great portions of everything. The service was EXCELLENT - quick, friendly and knowledgeable waitress. A little loud for my aging dad but he loved his dinner.

I love schnitzels and had to come check this out and oh my if you love a good schnitzel you must come try the food.superb

The food was absolutely delicious!

I had the Black Bird schnitzel and my fiancé had the prawn stir-fry. We shared the soft pretzel knots and apple strudel (with ice cream!).

We will definitely be back.

Great place to have dinner. Our server was great and always had a smile on her face. Food came out in a timely fashion and the servings were great. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Couldn’t find a better place for food and service.

Going there next 2 weeks. Have heard this is the go to place for schnitzel. Will have a report then.

Food delicious. Bavarian style. Great beer. Lots of food and very reasonably priced. Pork snitzle was fabulous. Casual and comfy.

Friendly staff and tasty food. We all tried something different and shared bites. Each had a unique taste and the spaetzle was on point.

We had a great meal. A seafood spaetzle, and a Reuben sandwich, and both were excellent. Well go back for sure.

If I could rate this higher than 5 stars, I would. Have been here twice now on both of our trips up to Qualicum, 2.5 years apart. Both times the meals were absolutely delicious and authentic and the service friendly and fast. Highly recommend making the stop for a meal here! We look forward to coming back and would honestly drive the 2 hours more often/just for this dinner if it weren’t for having little kids!

Gorgeous little spot with funky decoration and lovely staff! Food is not cheap but well worth it as the portions are huge and the food is incredible. Waitress also recommended us some beers which were both perfectly to or taste. Will be back for sure!

Might be the best place for schnitzel on the island - lived in Germany as a kid and this place hit the spot.

Amazing food and amazing service with friendly staff! We started eating and it was so good we then decided we needed to take pictures of our food lol. It was originally presented much nicer! I had the mushroom in wine and the other dish was a Ruben. We will now definitely become regulars! The apple strudel is the best I have ever had btw! You can't leave without having desert!

I want to tell you this place sucks, so it won't be busy. But. 4 of us agreed that it was the best meal and service (Samantha) in a long time!

RESERVE! So busy. So good. A must for going out in Qualicum beach. Can ask for Seniors sized meal, otherwise bring a good appetite and prepare to need doggy bag.

It's not often that everyone in a group agrees that they all enjoyed their meals. It's even more rare when it's a group of 8 Germans who gladly pronounce that the schnitzel, bratwurst, red cabbage, and spaetzel they were served was not just authentic - it tasted like home. We left feeling as if we'd just shared a meal with new friends.

Went there for a birthday dinner and had the pork schnitzel with apple and caramelized onions and my husband had the hunter schnitzel.it was so good we have been at least 4 times and never been disappointed.
They are so on the ball very busy but still not a long wait for food. Great service will be back.

A delicious and authentic experience! Be mindful, this place definitely moves at its own pace! If you're looking for a quick meal this ain't it, but it sure is delicious.

This restaurant was a wonderful surprise! The food is authentic and delicious. The owner and staff are friendly. The service was excellent. Hands down one of the best places to eat in Qualicum Beach.

Quite disappointed in paying $47.00+ for food that has little reflection of German cuisine. The schnitzel was flavorless, german potatoes were big hunks of uncooked pieces and the potato / ham soup was missing the 2 main ingredients potato and ham. I did not get the soup until mid meal when i had to ask for it. THEN we overhear our waiter speaking to someone explaining how he offered dessert and we didn't respond. I suppose we would have responded had that offer been made.

Incredible! Great portions, quality made schnitzel, spaetzle and red cabbage. Schnitzel was golden on the outside and tender on the inside. Green beans with a nice snap (not over cooked) and the peppercorn sauce with mushrooms was absolutely delicious. Service was friendly as well. Second time here, will return in a hurry.

I got a schnitzel (peppercorn) and my wife had the meatballs. We really enjoyed the schnitzel. The meatballs were okay, but we would definitely both get schnitzels next time.

Great food, service and ambience. The Blackbird schnitzel with apples and onions is my favourite. And who doesn't love spatzle.

I went hear on a recommendation by a friend and I have to say it was great. I haven't tried that much German cuisine but this has been the best I've had. I had the Jaeger Art Schnitzel with Spaetzle, and a beer of course, and was throughly impressed with both taste and portion. This place is a little on the expensive side but not ridiculous prices by any means. It took a little longer then expected to place my order for the drink and food but once placed it came out very quickly so it balances out. I also recommend trying the apple strudel for dessert it's very tasty. The location is very nice right across the road from the ocean with nice decor. Make a reservation because they are usually busy and do not have a lot of seating.

Never had Scnitzel before, but our friends said we had to try this place. Did not disappoint, delicious and every plate was displayed or served beautifully. We tried 2 German Beers as well, also great. Service was lovely. Cute play & 100% recommend!

This place is good. If you are big fan of big portions, you should visit this place for dinner! Service is excellent. Desserts were really good. I like the fact they have a variety of schnitzels. If you are around Qualicum Beach, I highly recommend this place!

This has to be one of the very best restaurant i have had the chance to have a meal in i give it a 10 plus rating for sure

Service was good but the food is subpar. As a german I can tell you this isn't proper schnitzel. The "german" potatoes are hunks that are barely fried and not seasoned at all. Schnitzel is small and flavorless. Drink menu was great though.

Delicious! Came here for dinner during a friend's bachelor party and had the blackberry Schnitzel. Were I not so full, I would have ordered seconds. Great service and friendly staff too.

A tasty experience. Attentive and professional staff, like good friends hosting a delicious meal. An enjoyable time. Head Chef Chris constantly puts out top end authentic food. Make the trip and visit this quaint and memorable Resturant. You’ll be glad you did.

I mean, yeah it's ok. Having lived in Germany, I was expecting the potatoes to be more authentic and softer rather than the regular Canadian pan fried. Also I was expecting to have a sweet side but you have to order it and it's not that great and the pricing is a bit ridiculous for it. The schnitzel was great a bit too greasy but I mean it's a schnitzel. It was still delicious! Atmosphere, is nice, love that they play German music in the background. I just wish it was more cozy, service was alright.

I absolutely love all of their food I have been coming here for about 2 1/2 years now when I come to the area once a week️
Sadly today I came and got my usual sausage and apple add mushroom dish and for some reason I’m not sure if there’s a new chef or what’s going on but the sausage was extremely thin sliced and it made up one sausage which I know is normally two thick sliced sausages in the dish there was barely any there and that’s not usual for this dish that I get weekly I took a picture because I was actually in shock of how little was in there
other than this one time I can’t tell you enough how great the food is in the service

The German meatballs dish, Bourbon Salisbury, was well made and flavourful - fresh green beans, traditional red cabbage, and delicious fresh mushrooms and onions in the sauce/gravy. My friend's Spätzle with cheese, was flavourful as well, more cheese than expected though, closer to a Mac'n cheese dish with a cream base.

Friendly service, German decor -. Even a working cuckoo clock, easy parking.

We ate here for the first time yesterday-absolutely delicious food and tasty German beer! The apple strudel was the best I’ve ever had. My only regret is not trying this place sooner.
