Amazing compassionate staff, cheap decent made food, and an all-around great place to find resources for everything else! We need more places like this in the DTES

The library inside is not large, but the books are okay. Some Chinese books are relatively comprehensive, involving cooking, travel, philosophy and art, etc, and there are also some magazines to read; the only drawback is that some people took a book inside, occupying seats to sleep, and some people took off their masks, which is not safe during the epidemic. Fortunately, the staff kept reminding me and holding masks to ask those who were not wearing them to wear them.

Safe place to go, security in building monitoring. Good to go to library, and thrifty affordable meals, and various programs
30 July 2023 5:30
Great place to go to eat cheaper meals than most places downtown as well as a great library, games room and weight lifting room.

Long time been coming here for more than ten to 15 years I'd say. Time flies. Carnegie is home. Word up gang gang

A staple in the DTES - props to the hard working staff for making it a safe place for all, providing amazing meals for $2 each as well as a library and access to computers/printers. A go to spot to find information about activities not only that they offer at the space itself, but going on within the entire community. Everyone is treated as an equal here, highly recommend!

This place does a lot of good for the community by providing low cost meals, wifi, access to a small library, computer access, plus a host of daily programming covering self improvement and group social activities. There is no drug use on the premises and security for carnagie hall upholds this rule. A nice place to be social, get out of the rain, or snow. Drop on by, there is something for everyone here.

The center is great and the staff are always helpful, however it's surrounded by addicts and homeless who do occasionally disturb the peace.
02 December 2022 2:53
Carnegie community center doesn't even deserve one star. They allow the junkies to take over the bathroom stalls for as long as they want to take their naps. Security doesn't care and if you have an illness they have even less sympathy.
14 November 2022 19:53
Love going to library, coffee is my favorite there and their low cost lunch. Thank you staff for your amazing service.
07 November 2022 23:46
Came to help a candidate for the election ended up helping with the event by passing out drinks and fruit. Lovely staff, beautiful building, have to come back and volunteer more.
31 August 2022 20:06
This is a great place to find any resources you may need, has a great little library and a full service cafeteria with great food.
Lots of diverse ppl living in the area whom I love to interact with.

Great staff & amenities.
I get delicious &inexpensive veggie lunches there almost daily.
24 November 2021 22:31
An excellent community centre. The food here is top notch for sure. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner).
There is also a public library too.
22 November 2021 18:56
Sometimes the food is so so sometimes its really good, always cheap! Good place to hang out use free wI fi and read. Not sure if the old school gym is up and running
29 August 2021 21:02

Dropped in to receive my second Pfizer vaccine shot. The nurse who gave me the shot was very good. The needle was in and out painlessly. No side effects were had at all. Thanks so much.

Community centre rooted in social justice and community building in the heart of the down town east side ️️️️
23 August 2019 8:39
Place rocks cool people cool things all around worth to chill there and explore the beautiness all around
13 August 2019 4:16
Good place for people who don't have much to get warm and eat for cheap. They also have housing resources and a library.
09 August 2019 5:33
Great facility that caters to a variety of people on the notorious DTES (downtown east side) of Vancouver. Only gets 3/5 because of the fact there are some employees who discriminate and are prejudiced to people who struggle with addiction and mental health issues.
06 August 2019 23:30
The Carnagie is like a safe place to land amidst the war zone of the Downtown East side. The gym is clean and easily accessible for seniors. It is affordable and not too crowded. It is a beautiful old building and well maintained. I remember when the Carnegie was a museum back in the 60's. Before that it was a library. It is still functioning and relevant today.
27 July 2019 16:37
A great place for people to hang out or read a book in their library. They also have a cafeteria on the upper level and even a gym and weight room. Membership is only $1 and they require a piece of I'd when signing up. All in all, a great place for everyone no matter who you are!
08 July 2019 0:43
It's never easy to say the thing I'm about to say about someone, But Carnagie Center has left itself open to my Way of lettting people find out things Tell the out right truth and let them go see for themselves. Curiosity drive. I once volunteered at carnagie center, I wanted to give back to the community a little something. Effort towards making it a better a better community.i wont ever go into That kitchen again.dont get me wrong, Its not to be confusedwith a trashy place. It is vey well kept Clean
The real Problem Is All The People in it.except for the minute Few of them. And I watch my words when I say this. But, THEY ARE ALL SPIES. Strange words to describe them.go See for yourselves. That a FACT jack.
28 June 2019 13:06
This community center, I firmly believe, has the best interests of the Downtown Eastside at heart. The staff and volunteers exemplify the willingness and spirit needed to help those of us who show up at their doors on a daily basis. Everything from food for the soul to well balanced sustenance for our bodies. Free progrprograms listed daily. $1 yearly membership fee and healthy meals on the cheap. Who could ask for more?
25 June 2019 9:39
The security staff at this centre are a bunch of useless morons. PAID membership is required for homeless people to make a phone call and accessing the internet there is like pulling teeth. They always ask for "volunteer" dishwashers while those at the top take home 6 figure incomes.
D- would be my review of this place overall.
22 June 2019 9:14
They provide so much, with dignity & grace, to a community in need of inclusive spaces for gathering. Security is at times overbearing & rude - that said I wouldn't want that job. Contains a branch of the Vancouver Public library with reading areas, an excellent low cost cafeteria, a computer lab, a seniors area and an air-conditioned gymnasium. A partially covered outdoor patio is also wheelchair accessible. Good hours, good range of services and GREAT volunteers.
08 June 2019 16:08
It's been a definite help when needing to find out anything in the downtown Eastside. They also have great meals for cheap prices $2.50 a meal along with a full size gym, weight room, pool table room/games room, t.v room, computer room, and a library. You can also sit in the lounge and chat with friends or sit outside on the balcony and have a smoke or enjoy the weather. Definitely a great place for those who take advantage of what they have to offer there.
01 June 2019 22:23
Great place to drive by if you like slamming on your breaks every 5 minutes to avoid hitting a jaywalking vagrant.
31 May 2019 18:19
One of the nicest buildings in the City. Other than the junkies shooting up in the bathrooms, or the passed out alcoholics at the games tables it is a wonderful place to stop and catch your breath (just don't inhale too deeply and DEFINITELY NOT THROUGH YOUR NOSE!) and grab a bite in the cafeteria while you're there. The food is AMAZEBALLS!
28 May 2019 0:34
Look I never went to any of those places, somebody must have my old broke phone and you have been following that phone
I go to work I go home and I take the occassional walk just to get out
13 May 2019 8:41
This place is alright they have excellent meals here for no more then $3.50. The staff here are very helpful but the security sucks. They think because they have a little power it gives them the right to do as they please. I can't wait till someone sets them straight.
10 May 2019 23:46
It is a respite for those battle weary from the street and all the predatory nature in amongst it all. Decent food normally, more than reasonably priced, a weight room to work out, a small library, various programs for elderly like dancing, art room, crafts projects, a computer room, a place for musicians to play and all the male security guards are great guys unfortunately only one of the two female security guards is a decent human but you can't win em all.i myself like the place very much.
29 April 2019 20:41
Awesome staff great place for homelessness to eat hang out from rain and resources to help set forth
26 April 2019 8:35
Too many people there, but for $2.25 you can't go rong for a home cooked meal. The food is great and tasty if u want to take it out bring your own plates or container. But you can't beat the price for a home cooked meal. I do know tuesdays are burger days and i will be going back with my containers.
24 April 2019 21:42
Work as a volunteer in the kitchen and the meals they provide at significantly subsidized costs for marganlized people is exceptional.
22 April 2019 0:38
What the volunteer do there is awesome. The area to play floor hockey is a little small but I know that sports isn't the priority of the Carnegie center. Over all I was pleased with the services they offered.
17 April 2019 22:11
The staff are super helpful and friendly and will help you with whatever it is that you need. If they don't have the resources to help you they give you directions as to where you could go. They serve affordable great food and they got a library inside+public washroom
13 April 2019 10:23
The CARNEGIE is what the residents in the neighborhood call it it's like a huge community centre and if you can believe it in this day in society it only cost one dollar for a membership for one year they have a good size library which is one of the Vancouver city libraries so you can get a card there that you can use at other branches on the 3rd floor there's a computer room which you can set up your email address or get on the internet there's a cafe that has cheap meals or you can relax out on the terrace injoy the sunshine I went tell you all the different things you can do there but that's a example if your new to the erea or you just want to know more about the dtes then that's the place to go each floor is a new experience so drop over to the CARNEGIE centre orson the corner of main and hastings streets it's a definite adventure.

A good place for one to go to get directions around town and to get warmed up if needed and thier a lot more!
01 March 2019 6:35
Carnegie is the glue that holds the DTES together. It is a long standing institution, and their dedication to their clients is where they shine. Any day of the week, you can get chef prepared meals here; offered at ridiculously low prices. For 2.50, you won't leave hungry. Hamburger Tuesday is wildly popular, and the even offers vegetarian/vegan options. All food is meticulously prepared in a newly renovated kitchen, by staff who clearly have pride in their work and know the value of a dollar.
31 January 2019 2:40
I have lived in Vancouver my entire life and today was the first time I visited Carnegie community centre. As a kid my parents feared it was a place of crime and drugs. Today I see it as exactly the opposite: a critically important piece of the community to help people's fundamental well being.

Library and gym space on the first floor. Subsidized healthy meals on the second floor. Computers and quiet study area in the third.

For the tourists: yes there are public washrooms both on the outside and on the inside!
21 January 2019 3:09
A good place to guide you to the resources that you may need what else can I say it's the Carnegie good experience downtown Eastside location Hastings and main Street what else can I say it's downtown Eastside
