One of the best decisions I've made in the past 5-years was phoning and making an appointment with #Freshstartbc.

Too be honest, it was with nerves and trepidation I visited their office on Cormorant Street in downtown Victoria (across Douglas Street from Centennial Square) for my first appointment. However, I knew I needed to address some financial issues to improve my life, my health, and give me hope again.

A couple of counselling sessions and in-person meetings got the ball start rolling - and 5-years later my stress level is reduced, my ability to understand credit and finances have improved, and I feel like a HUGE weight has been lifted off my shoulders. And a blocked telephone number call doesn't freak me out anymore.

Doug, Paul, and the rest of the Victoria Freshstartbc team were great; patient, empathetic, knowledgeable, and trustworthy.

In working with freshstart on a consumer proposal I was able to deal with serious personal debt that I could not keep up with. I went from feeling way over my head (new house 2 young kids and down an income) to having things coming around within a couple of months. The consumer proposal allowed me to sort out my debt while my partner was able to hang on to her well earned credit which has still been an important part of our financial health. As I had food for four, two car payments, a mortgage, bills, and daycare all covered by one job things were beyond tight and we needed to do something. I did some research on bankruptcy and consumer proposals and learned a bit about the options and the difference between secured and non-secured debts, etc. I got in contact with Doug as I was looking for a trustee and their service and support has been amazing in helping me deal with some serious issues for our family. Secured debts on the cars and house along with baseline personal expenses took up a lot of income so the terms negotiated were reasonable on 2 credit card balances and a line of credit balance (average 15% interest). We worked through the proposal before I was really in a position to sell any secured assets (cars) and the lenders respected those debts as taking priority on my available income and how much I would be able to afford to pay back. Within 12 of months of the proposal being accepted I sold one of the vehicles and managed to pay off the other and at that point I had my head generally above water again. I have just managed to pay it all out after 5 years (now debt free with no car payments, two jobs and less childcare). The consumer proposal was the best option for me as I had my job throughout which meant that bankruptcy would have been expensive and would have had a broader impact on the family credit situation. My biggest worry was related to risk for mortgage renewal and that went ahead. In either case it is good to take the steps of engaging with a trustee and determining what makes sense for your situation. It can take a lot of noise and stress out of life to get some of this settled and working with freshstart has made a huge and positive change in ours. The team was really helpful and professional and someone always answered the phone.
