Our son's birthday party was such an awesome experience here we decided to enroll both our kids in martial arts at Excel.

We've been waiting until we had been here long enough to really see all the different instructors work with our kids and get a feel for it before writing a review. Now I'm wondering how we can fit all the positive aspects of this place into a couple of paragraphs.

Our kids are very different and need different types of teaching and encouragement. Every instructor has picked up on this and figured out how to adjust their style to maximize their effort, motivation, and learning. They all knew our kids names within the first week. The only feedback kids get here is positive. They somehow manage to pair this with high expectations when they know kids can push harder and do better.

My oldest is doing better than he ever has at school since he started at Excel. His self-regulation skills have seen a massive benefit and so has his confidence. We started at twice per week and upped it to 3x as both kids want to go more.

They teach kids to be responsible citizens and give back to their communities. For example they held a "Kickathon" to give them the opportunity to fundraise for their schools. They enthusiastically told the kids participating how proud they were of what they were doing.

They consistently notice when kids need some 1-on-1 support and an assistant will go stand with them to give them tips or help them focus. Kids of all abilities are welcomed and treated with kindness and belonging. Neurodiverse kids are seen as having "differences not disabilities" (as Richard, one of the owners, put it) and are not made to feel like they are disruptive or lesser in any way.

They recognize kids that have leadership potential and recruit them into their leadership program, where they get to help out as assistants to younger kids in lower level classes. This works wonderfully for our youngest who is shy around adults and loves to have the older kids mentor him.

Each time we go there is an unwaveringly positive, child-focused, encouraging and warm vibe from the instructors. I don't know how they do it. Honestly it feels like a true community there, which is pretty refreshing after two years of Covid. I could go on but suffice it to say that we can't recommend them highly enough.

Needs many improvement in training and communication.way to go.they ask people to put good reviews. I tried to explain them several times the issues, always say OK but ignored. Gave up after 2 years finally and enrolled somewhere else

My son in grade 4 loves the after-school program. He gets picked up four days a week, always so organized and efficient and most of all it’s fun. I’d highly recommend Excel Martial Arts in Poco.

Parker has been in the After School Program, Summer Camp, Pro D Days and Movie Nights for 4 years. Older brother was in for 2. Well run, professional. Pick up from school! Learns a great skill, leadership development and gets away from being online. Highly recommend!

My two kids are enrolled in the after-school program— it has been great. Pick up right at their school in a company van, couldn’t be any more convenient. What more could a parent ask for— after-school care combined with a physical activity/training.recommend highly:)

EMA offers everything that seems to be missing from childhood these days. Fun education based on respect and hard work. Electronics free time. Teaches our little ones and problem-solving skills without overwhelming their little brains. All the instructors are passionate about what they are doing. It really is a highly professional environment. EMA it’s not a business, it’s a family. Would you have a problem, of any kind, they will be there to assist you and solve your problem. Thank you EMA for being part of our life. Thank you for taking such good care of our child.

Excel has a reputation of helping kids with ADHD, which my son has been diagnosed with, and after 4 months of interrupted (covid shutdowns) there has been a noticeable change in my son's ability to focus and listen.

I have known the owner for years and she is a great role model for the kids! She truly cares and is passionate about her profession.

Great atmosphere for learning for adults as well as children. The knowledgeable instructors meet the students where they are at, no matter their background nor their athletic ability. My children have learned more than just how to do great kicks and punches, they have also learned self confidence and perseverance while having fun.

Our journey begins way back in the day.ok it was April 2017. My son had come home from school just raving about how much fun he had during is P. E class. He went on to tell me about how Excel Martial Arts was training at his school for a week. Of course this was accompanied by a flyer for a “School Special”. For the next few days, my boy constantly was bugging me to take him to E. M. A for a trial class. I finally called and got the information and arrived for his first class. He immediately got out on the floor and started training, he did very well and was encouraged by his one on one instructor. At the end of the session, we spoke to Richard McImoyl and he gave us all the information we needed to get started. He did not pressure us in any way to sign up.my son on the other hand.well he had another agenda, he wanted that uniform that day! Well it was not a difficult task to twist my rubber arm. I signed him up and he’s been training since May 2017 on average of 2-3 times per week. As I have observed over the last couple of years, EMA is more than just martial arts. This is a family! A family of dedicated individuals that work together to achieve that next belt level while having a ton of fun! Each class, instructors work both as a group and 1 on 1. They are extremely patient, fun, and sometimes even entertaining! My son is maturing as a young man and I give a lot of credit to the team at Excel Martial Arts, Port Coquitlam! They always seem find ways to involve their students and make them the best version of themselves. My son is looking to the future where he hopes to one day be part of the instructors team. Excel has the tools in place to groom students into these types of positions through their leadership program which is a lead up to their instructors academy program. It’s an absolute pleasure to support this business! They have something for everyone! Did I mention Pro-D Day camps, birthday party’s, movie nights, after school care (including pick up at local schools), they even have programming for adults. And finally.how about fundraising! This one takes the cake for me! Want to fundraise for a charity, school PAC etc? Giving back and supporting the community is their “side speciality”, they will always find a way to be involved, you name it and they will be you’re biggest supporter! Recently my son donated his hair to be made into wigs for children with life changing illnesses. Not only did EMA get the donations started off with a contribution, they went above and beyond to share with other members through various social media and print campaigns. On hair cut day, they sent one member from the instructor team to get pictures and video.well half the instructor team showed up to cheer him on, not because they had to, but because the wanted to! This team is purely awesome, 10/10 stars doesn’t even come close to what they really rate! Thank you to the moon and back Richard and you’re entire team at Excel Martial Art Port Coquitlam, we are so proud to be associated with Excel and look forward to many years with this family!

My son is with Martial Art Group for over 2 years. He enjoys it a lot. It is a very well organized. The management as well as the trainers are flexible and helpful in arranging on-line class, and answering our questions while he was attending in-class training. We definitely wish them all the best and plan to have my son for training until later ages.

Excel MA Port Coquitlam is a great place for martial arts. My two kids started a month ago on the recommendation of a friend whose kids have been going regularly for past many years.
I found it to be a fantastic place for my kids learning an essential skill. A spacious, well-equipped and clean / safe environment and a skilled instructor team and a responsive caring management. I felt that the instructors are passionate about what they do.
Highly recommend to anyone looking for a serious martial art in a family atmosphere.

Our two boys have been at Excel for a couple of years now: they are both very different kids and have different needs at quite extreme ends of their personalities and interests. Excel has been fantastic in supporting both of them in their journies of growth. Early on I was skeptical of mixed forms of Martial Arts after having trained on very strict traditional forms long ago, but I grew to truly appreciate the methods used at Excel that go beyond the traditional methods in many ways and work towards building real world leadership and interpersonal skills in partnership with practical martial arts skills. Definitely worth a look if you are trying to find the right fit for your family in the tri-cities area.

Thank you EMA for all the hard work you guys do for all the ninjas you train! My son didn't want to join at first, but once he got going he just loves being part of the team! They definitely go the extra mile, from picking up kids from school, to offering pro-d day, spring break and summer camps. They even have fundraiser movie nights for the local schools! (When we don't have COVID to deal with of course)
I recommend Excel Martial Arts to anyone looking to improve theirs or their child's confidence, skills, health and well being!

I came to EMA from a different martial arts to continue my training and that had to be one of my best decisions I ever made.

Richard has no accountability and is extremely belligerent. I would not send my children or family to his facility or any of the Excel facilities.

His review is a reflection of his behavior.
As indicated do not deal with Richard for any reason at all.
