The braised duck noodles were amazing, the broth is so flavourful. Next time I want to try the vegetarian dish!
24 December 2023 15:03
This has been one of my best experiences in the past few times I have been out! The second I walked in I felt welcomed even though it was very busy, I had to wait about 10 minutes for a table.

We ordered the spicy boat noodles, the khao soi chicken curry noodles and the thai iced tea. Everything was super good, such a great place to go when you just want a bowl of comfort noodles.

The shanghai wide noodles were my favorite, soo chewy. The only thing I wish could have been changed was the pork blood in the spicy boat noodles. It is mixed into the broth so can’t be taken out and the whole time I could feel like I could taste the blood taste which isn’t my cup of tea. Besides that the flavor and meat was great, and the chicken curry soup is so heart warming.

The service was great through the whole experience I would definitely come back on any noodle craving.

My rating is 3.5, but I rounded it up. Not bad, I came here with no expectations and have always wanted to try this place because I come by this area often.

I love their decor especially with old Chinese Mangas laying around on the tables. It was directly right on my target of stuff I want for decor, that is for sure ;)

I love their duck, crystal noodle bowl. The duck is extremely fatty though, and you can really taste it, since they left the skin on it, and the crystal noodle is something I have been trying to find for a long time. By the end, I was extremely full and it was delicious. Maybe I wanted more of it, but it really is extremely rich flavour that I think I can only have 1 bowl of it and that's it. I love the amount of their sauces they offer to the patrons, it was unique, and it will change the flavour of the bowl of ramen countless times.

I would come back maybe sometime soon? But I really don't know because the place really didn't stand out except for the noodles. I do want to try other stuff on the menu, but I will think about it. I appreciate this place a lot though, it tries hard with the classic BBQ/Noodle house place and it has the western/modern style of decor. I like the place overall.

What a gem! Delicious food! The place gets busy so you might want to have takeout if you mind the crowd.
19 September 2023 1:54
"Great flavor! The noodle soup here is delicious and satisfying. I highly recommend it! "

Personal recommendations are the:
Tom Yum Goong & Hot and Sour Pork Noodles
15 September 2023 23:46
Best soup I've eaten in my entire life! I can't stop thinking about it and can't wait to order the Vegetarian soup again and I'm not even Vegetarian! Service was super fast and friendly too!
13 September 2023 4:58
The Thai food I’ve tried before this was mainly stir fried noodles or deep fried appetizers. We came to Fat Mao as an alternative and it ended up being one of our favorite foods! The menu options are so unique and each noodle soup item has lots of ingredients (lots of meats and veg!) The broth is so flavorful and I love how spicy it is. We finished our bowls so fast.
06 April 2023 13:54
I really wanted to like this restaurant but find it overrated. I've been here a couple times now and think the menu items are really meh and overpriced. It's actually near the bottom of the list of noodle places I would recommend in Vancouver.

3 stars because there was nothing exceptionally bad or anything. Service was fine and dishes have nice presentation. It's just not worth the hype on the Vancouver foodie social media scene and tbh I wouldn't make another visit.
05 April 2023 9:04
Just hands down exceptional and tasty soups. I got the braised duck soup with shanghai noodles and they were just so textural and bouncy. I definitely recommend this place, it doesn't look like much from outside but the food is so worth it.
29 March 2023 2:40
This restaurant was one of the deciding factors of us moving to Van and it never disappoints!
26 March 2023 20:00
Their soups are packed with flavour! They offer three different gf rice noodles (definitely recommend the rice sheets). Highly recommend
21 March 2023 22:15
Couldn’t speak highly enough of this place, I discovered Fat Mao last year and have used any possible excuse I could to go and eat at both locations since. Both locations are clean and welcoming, the staff are always incredibly friendly, I have worked my way through pretty much every bowl on the menu and all have been incredible.
13 March 2023 13:54
We ordered: spicy boat noodle (pho rice noodles), chicken curry (shanghai wide noodles), century egg with house tofu. All of.them are good. We like the boat noodles the most. Despite the 3 chili signs, they can make it less spicy (regular should be okay if you can take medium spice;) Services are good they even showed us a picture of the different kinds of noodles they offered. Not a place that you can sit and talk because people are waiting. Last call at 8: 15pm.
03 March 2023 18:17
The Chicken Khao Soi is the best I’ve had since being in Pai, Thailand! The chicken falls right off the bone and the broth is so flavourful. 10/10 recommend
22 February 2023 0:24
Absolutely delicious. Highly recommend all of the soups. Service is friendly.

We ate the chicken curry and duck soups. Both very different flavours, but both were exceptional
16 February 2023 6:00
We ordered the roti and it was a good snack to start.
I would highly recommend the spicy boat noodle and maybe substitute the noodle to the pho noodles. Soup was very rich and flavorful. And to top it off, they give you a decent amount of meats!
15 February 2023 22:06
This review is based on the Spicy Boat Noodle that I tried. Maybe I had a bad batch of the soup as it was extremely salty. I felt like I was drinking soy sauce. Trying to make sense of why the soup is so salty since other reviews of the boat noodles were fairly positive, I asked if the soup is for dipping and not drinking. The staff said it’s soup to drink so to enjoy it, I diluted the soup with 2 glasses of hot water but even then, it was still very salty. When I told the staff that the soup is very salty, they explained to me that it’s made intentionally very salty. If you don’t like super salty food, I recommend skipping the boat noodle and try something else on their menu.
15 February 2023 14:05
DELICIOUS braised duck soup with Shanghai noodles. Was in Vancouver to visit and even now after arriving back home I’m trying to think of what can I do to make something close to this dish. What unforgettable flavors and attentive service from the staff, I 100% recommend.
08 February 2023 22:16
The smell of this place brings you right back to classic Asian noodle shops like in Malaysia. Curry and shrimp paste fill the air. Their tofu dishes are amazing, I totally recommend them.
04 February 2023 19:11
Absolutely great thai soup and noodle restaurant. The soups are bursting with flavour. I highly recommend this spot.
28 January 2023 1:19
Great small place for a quite bite. Food portions are large and service is friendly. The khao soi chicken curry noodle had a nice aromatic smell and the curry was strong. I really liked the egg noodle option with this dish. It had a nice texture to it.
21 May 2022 18:33
Service was top notch. Food, not so much.

Ordered duck noodles and the curry noodles. The noodles (Shanghai) had great texture and chew. Duck broth was overly salty and almost flavoured with just soy. The curry was rich, and had tons of flavour.

My biggest issue is the duck leg and chicken leg. It was so over cooked, it was like eating leather. For $20 a bowl, these should be juicy and tender. Felt like it was boiled for hours. Should have just waited for Phom Penh. 1/2 the cost and protein isn’t cooked dry.

I really wanted to love this place
06 May 2022 18:04
Being 3 years in Canada i just start being open trying new stuff specialy new food’s I usually like more dry foods but this time me and my husband visit this restaurant called Fat Mao a Thai restaurant in Vancouver located in georgia street ️
06 May 2022 12:29
Beautiful spot in Chinatown serving an array of noodle dishes. Don’t go here and not order something to start though, the house made tofu with century egg was divine, will be recommending for sure!
29 April 2022 4:02
What a fantastic meal. We ordered the braised duck noodles and Tom yum goong noodles. Both bowls were chock full of ingredients and bursting with flavour. The braised duck noodles were especially delicious - brothy, rich and full of umami.

The wing bean salad we had for an appetiser was also yummy - crisp, tangy and fragrant with shallots and peanuts.
13 April 2022 13:32
Very expensive and the portion is small, everything’s on the saltier side. I guess I’m not adjusted to life after COVID inflation yet.
18 March 2022 1:24
Delicious food but I’m so bummed you got rid of the Khai soi it was the best in the city and trust me I’ve tried them all. Please bring it back!
04 March 2022 3:44
Yummy! Hot & Sour Pork soup with Pho noodles. Packed with so much flavour and delicious ingredients. Friendly staff!
02 March 2022 17:39
Wowie wow. This bowl of soup was made with such a balanced and complex palate of flavours the price of one bowl of soup was a lot, but my belly is happy!
20 January 2022 1:13
I found the food excellent, service superb and atmosphere perfect. Very clean. Reason not a five star is parking. We had two noodle dishes shared among three persons service was quick this part of vancouver limited parking however if you skytrain down to Main Street station it is not to far of a walk
04 January 2022 12:25
We loved everything we ordered! Tom Yum with mushrooms, Spicy Boat and the mapo tofu. Very flavorful.
They got the wrong kind of noodles in my soup and comped my whole dish in compensation!?
It's a perfect place when you're craving a noodle soup that's not ramen or pho.
31 December 2021 20:59
Recommended by some locals.their recommendation was spot on. I love khao soi and this was some of the best khao soi I've had. A small, intimate restaurant where the kitchen is open for all to see. Wonderful service and staff. Fat Mao is a gem.
26 December 2021 21:32
My go to noodle place on a rainy day! There isn’t too much seating but it’s pretty easy to get a seat. Menu isn’t that big but there’s a lot of variety (you can choose the type of noodle you want)! Sister restaurant of Maenam so you know it’s good
16 December 2021 11:41
This is the definition little tiny restaurant that packs big flavour. Their food has flavour and authenticity that one will remember and crave two days later. Be warned, you will want to come back for more.
13 December 2021 19:53
Ordered the braised duck soup with the flat and wide noodles. The noodles were the perfect chewiness but other than that, the rest was underwhelmed. The duck meat wasn’t tender and nothing stood out from the soup base. In fact, it left a weird aftertaste—similar to what it would taste/feel when there’s a lot of MSG.
03 December 2021 10:50
So so so good.their mushroom coconut bowl is a great dish for vegetarians (and I'm pretty sure vegans too).
this place never disappoints.usually a busy wait, put your name on the list and check out some other hidden gems or shops close by In the area

Approuvé par la coccinelle française. Bouillon riche et succulent. Je me lèche les lèvres à la prochaine réunion exécutive qui sy passerai.
15 November 2021 22:09
Staff and service was great, super friendly. Tried the spicy boat noodles and Khao soi and roti. Don't sleep on the roti, it's fresh, hot, crisp, buttery and you dunk it in the rich coconut curry. Khao soi was a winner for me, the chicken is stewed so that the meat just melts, I dunno how the chef placed it in thr bowl without it falling apart it was that soft. Spicy noods were alright, not my favorite but worth a try, there's a good balance between sour, savory and spicy. Worth checking out.
24 October 2021 21:52
The chicken noodle curry dish is very good, but I would suggest ordering some bread with it to soak up the last bit of curry at the bottom of the bowl as it is quite rich on it's own.
21 September 2021 0:32
Last time I was here was pre-COVID. So happy to have the opportunity to come back. Glad to say their soup is consistently excellent each and every time! I had the hot and sour pork noodles and the flavour is beautifully vinegar-y and savoury. Love the harmony of flavours with the crispy shallots and roasted peanuts. Their duck leg is sumptuously marinated in soy and an equally amazing soup. We also started with their roti and it was delicious. Why did I take a picture of just the curry dipping sauce? Because it’s drinkable and that oil means it’s packed with flavour!
19 September 2021 1:52
Hot and Sour noodle is not the same as it used to be.
No rice sheet noodle and I found something is missing in term of flavor.
18 September 2021 11:11
Found this restaurant on thatmap.com and was not disappointed. I had the duck leg in a slightly sweet soy broth which was really unique. You can choose your noodle types. It's a must visit if you're near Science World!
04 September 2021 22:13
Might be easy to skip this hidden gem in Chinatown but you should try this place.

Now due to Covid situation they are make small selections of dish but they made a great flavor of every single master pieces. You can see hot soup on the stove and everything from scratch at the open kitchen.

Covid protocol is pretty well every single tables are separated by shield.

I can't wait when you guys going back to fully menu
02 September 2021 11:59
Absolutely amazing. We tried a variety of dishes. The duck soup so clean and rich. The roti amazing! Tom yum delicious and the dry hot and sour noodles is so so good. Highly recommend this. My family and i literally destroyed every plate!
12 August 2021 23:03
I got the Khao Soi (Coconut Chicken Curry with Noodles)! It was super good, very creamy. The chicken was also perfectly flavored and tender. A lot of of folks in the area stop by Ramen Butcher, but I think it's good to broaden your palette and stop by here too!

It's a bit pricier for this type of food (but given the fact that you get fancy pizzas for ~$20 in the area, I think it's fair).

The service was friendly and prompt! A small hole in the wall means that you're served with a wonderful dish and their full attention!

Also if you're a DragonBall Z fan, you'll enjoy the your washroom break:)

5/5, a wonderful little place. I've been in the neighborhood for a long while now, but this is my first time stopping by. Certainly won't be my last ️
10 August 2021 5:39
Egg Noodle! So chewy!(try it)

If you like southeast Asian strong peanut flavor soup; this is your final destination!

Love the soup can be spicy or no spicy.

Omg the chicken is soooooo soft; almost melt in my mouth!(Entire chicken leg)
29 July 2021 18:36
I got the curry noodles and the flavour was spot on. Definitely one of my new favourite places now.
28 July 2021 5:18
This place is awesome! My go-to is the vegetarian Khao Soi with Shanghai wide noodles (pictured) - it’s super rich and flavourful!
12 May 2021 15:40
Great atmosphere with a wonderful selection of Southeast asian-style noodles. Love their Khao soi and Thai tea:)
05 May 2021 13:18
I was surprised by how great this place is! I’ll be back often to try other menu items, but I had the Duck noodles, and it was excellent. Great service and atmosphere too.
31 March 2021 13:57
We had the khao soi. The curry soup was the star of the dish - creamy and deeply flavoured. It also came with pickled vegetables to contrast, egg noodles, crispy noodles, and a quarter chicken. The chicken was great and tender, but the noodles were very mediocre. The egg noodles were probably not fresh, and tasted like grocery store noodles. They were also clumped together, which is incredibly disappointing since such an amateur mistake should not be made in a noodle shop. The crispy noodles were also kind of stale.

The service was good - always on top with refilling water, and also offered us chili flakes and spicy oil. The chili flakes are very legit, and provide a lot of spicy kick.
27 August 2019 5:03
Omg has this place ever exceeded my expectations. Literally came in for the first time and tried the cold noodle (seasonal special) and it was everything.it was very wholesome with plenty of flavor. Brings me back to childhood but so much better lol!
25 August 2019 5:57
FAT MAO is the WOREST place! I will give them ZERO star if I can. The service are so bad that I never did get pass to sitting down at a table!

We are party of 11 people saw them just open for lunch and the place was completely empty! I told her we have 11 people, she replied “we cannot accommodate you, our biggest table only seat 8-10”. We responded “We can split up for 2 or more tables”. She responded “You can’t do that. ” Why not as I asked (to my surprise). She then consulted with another lady behind the counter and then respond back as “Fine but you can only have the table for 40 minutes. We reply “Fine” we just want to grab lunch and go, it’s not like we are going to congregate in here. Right after I agree with their term’S’ then immediately the hostess/waitress add more restriction and said it has to be 1-bill and we said fine again and she said 20% gratuity must be added. So I ask her, if we come in 4 person at a time sitting at 3 sperate random tables like strangers do I still need to be 1 bill, leave in 40min and 20% gratuity? She said YES! By that time we just walked away!
Its not about the money, it’s about principal! No one should be treated like that! So we found a very nice busy Dim Sum place nearby call Jade Dynasty, food was amazing and we spent $455 for lunch (included 25% tips), can’t really say the service worth 25% but…. Still better than paying Fat Mao anything at all.
19 August 2019 19:34
We heard about this restaurant on Big food bucket list so we decided to try it. I had the special of the day and my partner had the beef laksa. Both soups packed a punch in flavour and spice. Very filling, lots of great ingredients like mushrooms, nuts and the protein of choice. The portion size was just right and we didn't leave feeling over full or starving. The staff were super friendly and helpful and the restaurant was clean and cozy. The next time we go back I'm going to try out the roti with curry. A definite must go to when in Chinatown.
18 August 2019 2:53
Worst dining experience ever.

The waitress was so rude and not well trained.i ordered duck leg noodle soup, they have different sauces on the table which you can dip the duck meat, i expect a small plate to put those sauce on, but the waitress did not bring me any.i had to ask, i was with my little child, again i had to ask for a small bowl and fork for him.don't believe my request is too much, but that waitress got really unhappy.when i asked for the bill, she didn't even bring it to my table, she just throw it on the counter and busy playing with her phone.as one previous review mentioned there is a waitress who provide very unpleasant service, i think we are talking about the same one.i don't know if the owner ever read the review, could you please find who she is, and tell her if she doesn't like this job, please just quit.one more thing, this restaurant doesn't offer highchair, i was told by that waitress that this restaurant is not child friendly.
14 August 2019 19:03
This was our first lunch stop while visiting Vancouver. They have a cozy atmosphere and the food was delicious.
The waiter was really helpful giving us clues on what to do nearby.
Really nice place
05 August 2019 15:57
This place was recently featured on John Catucci's Big Food Bucket List (Food Network) decided to give place a try i ordered the Braised Duck Noodles with Shanghai wide noodles it was quite delicious tasting the duck was so tender it literally fell off the bone and the noodles were quite firm the broth was a bit salty i think the sodium level must be off the charts. The service was very friendly, attentive i would highly recommend this place
04 August 2019 14:33
Some of the most flavourful Thai food I've ever had. Both the beef laksa and the koh soi were complex, punchy, rich, and just plain delicious! Highly recommend this place!
01 August 2019 6:51
Compact menu, which is great for people who are indecisive And I'll be thinking of that coconut lemongrass soup with vermicelli for dayssssss Heads up, this is one of those places that takes a break and closes in between lunch and dinner so plan accordingly!
26 July 2019 3:29
Nice flavors. Portion size on the small side for the price. Had the laksa noodles. Coconut Mushroom noodles and roti with curry sauce. Restaurant is small so expect little bit of wait during peak times.
20 July 2019 12:33
It is a Vietnam / thai/Chinese mixed flavour and style, unique for sure, very special place for quick snack or short meal
20 July 2019 6:56
Khao Soi noodles! I have been craving one since 2016 and I have finally found one. Not only that but it is delicious. It has the pickle mustard greens, the crispy noodles the cilantro and the lime! It is just missing the red onion but thankfully they have onions in vinaiger which do the job. A sign of a good Khao Soi is that even if your full you keep going for another bite and in Thailand you would order another bowl. Here the bowl is huge so you will be satisfied with one bowl but even though I was bursting at the seems, I kept going for another bite. Good job Fat Mao! I will be coming back regularly from now on.
06 July 2019 16:46
I had the Koh soi noodle bowl. The soup broth was great till the last bite and the chicken fell off the bone. It was a nice change from the usual noodle soups offered in Vancouver (pho, ramen, and sometimes laksa). My girlfriend had the laksa, which was good but a bit spicy.
The roti was decent, but not the best roti I have had. Would still recommend and go back.
16 June 2019 17:10
A fat cat motif that expresses the comfort and happiness which will radiate from your belly after you polish off a bowl (or two) followed by a crisp Singha. The ceviche is sweet with a great green paste sauce missed in, with the hint of lime adding the acidity to the tarp chips. Curry rotti is the old favorite that you can't mess up, and here it's done; perfectly.

Bowls of noodles are the claim to fame here and in the words of Tony the Tiger, it's grrrrreeeeat!

Tldr: . Come for noodles, the food is excellent
10 June 2019 12:58
If you're looking for the best collection of street noodles inspired from SE Asia, then you need to visit Fat Mao. This is my favourite noodle place in Vancouver.
07 May 2019 6:06
So, dang tasty! The chiang mai noodles are my favorite, along with the thai rice soup, and the thai iced tea (if you've never had thai iced tea, this is the spot to try it).
03 May 2019 15:44
Nice eatery serving up Asian fusion. The duck noodle is best thing I've had on the menu, if anyone has been to Thailand I would say it's the closest (and only) place I've found that has the broth taste similar to "boat noodles" that I had in the streets of Bangkok.
25 April 2019 12:20
I went there twice in one weekend you must est their braised duck noodle with thick noodle it's the best noodle soup ever. Their desert roti is good as well
17 April 2019 15:06
Nice noodles, big portions and fair prices. The espresso coffe with condensed milk ice cream is surprisingly tasty. The place is small so it is a little bit crowded.
27 March 2019 16:39
This place is so cute and quiet. Servers were really nice. Last time I was there, the server was telling me that the owner's wife is from Thailand and tries to make the dishes as authentic as possible, which makes sense because I get more of an authentic vibe from here than other Thai restaurants in Vancouver. They serve Khao soi (sorry no picture) which is a dish from northern Thailand, Laos and Burma that isn't usually on other Thai restaurant's menu. I ordered it and I was so happy because it was not only delicious, it also brought back memories from when I went to Thailand. Definitely check this place out for the Khao soi.
19 March 2019 12:07
Great food, decent prices, sometimes the wait is too long and the 20% gratuity for groups of 6 or more is quite high for this area
16 March 2019 13:20
I've always wanted to try the other restaurants started by the creator of Maenam, and now I can finally cross one off my list. Don't be worried by the seemingly limited menu (only four types of soup noodles) because the soup noodles are fantastic! I had the Coconut and Mushroom Noodles, and next time I mean to try the Southern Thai Beef Laksa. I ate - and drank - everything in my bowl, which was so delicious. I recognised Thai Ice Tea and Banana Roti from the Maenam menu, and I think next time I'll have to try the Affogato too.
15 March 2019 1:27
Quaint, cozy, small place serving up fusion Thai food. The menu is creative with a nod to the tradition. Great flavouring and lots of layers of texture going on in a bowl of noodle. Recommended for a rainy Vancouver day.
