We got Lamb Momo, cottage cheese curry and goat curry and they were really good! My friend’s fav was the lamb momo jhol a must try and I love the cottage cheese the most!
Went here for an early dinner and the food was absolutely delicious! The restaurant was quiet as we were the only ones there for majority of the time but we could tell they were doing lots of takeout orders. We got chicken momos, shrimp chowmein, lamb curry and creamy chicken curry The food was PACKED with flavour. The dumplings (momos) were filled to the brim with chicken. Every bite was so delicious we managed so eat this all between just two people! Our server was the absolute sweetest and we could tell she put in 100% effort.
DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS RESTAURANT IT IS SO GOOD!
The restaurant is on the second floor so if mobility/stairs is an issue, be aware. The decor is out-dated but the service and food make up for it
I’ve been going here for years now since my arrival in Canada and I just love this place. Their garlic lamb rice dish is addictive! Between my fiends and I we have tried most dishes and we are always impressed. Highly recommend
The place is a gorgeous gem. The food was absolutely to die for. I had a veg jhol mono and a veg chilli momo. Both were amazing but the chilli momo was the perfect amount of spicy and sweet. The outside patio is very nice and the prices are reasonable. Especially great for anyone who is vegetarian.
Little cozy atmosphere with authentic Himalayan taste which reminds me the meme home taste in Vancouver. With the background of nepali music, it gives you the typical nepali vibes. One must visit Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen if you are wandering for authentic Nepali cuisine in vancouver.
The best authentic momos in downtown. The ambience and the soft folk music adds to the extraordinary experience. I would recommend everyone to try their momos and thukpa for sure. I am yet to taste other dishes and I am sure they’d also be good. The service of the staff is also jovial and customer-friendly. Location is easily accessible. 10/10 ️
This place is amazing. The foos is authentic, delicious and fairly priced. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to assist. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Don't let decor and ambience turn you off! The food was unbelievable and so much flavour. Highly recommended if you are looking for a great meal at good price.
Tried the Nepali bhojan. It was very authentic and each item was extremely delicious. The naan was so well prepared, one of the best I have ever had. The items were served in a traditional style as well. And I also loved the melodious music playing in the background. Overall great experience!
We have been walking by the Gurkha Himalayan Kitchen for years - always thought we should give it a try. The other day we did and what a wonderful surprise. We sat out on the patio for dinner, had the heater on and with the pleasant servers, was a wonderful experience. Then the food came - I had the lamb - and the best lamb I have had in Vancouver - and I have eaten a lot of lamb. Their chicken wings were to die for too. Other plate was skewered chicken and excellent too.
We will be back and have no hesitation recommending to anyone. Total price with liquor for 4 was $176. A great dinner, a great price.
We found the food mediocre with the exception of the tigmo bread, which was very good. We had both steamed and fried Momo's. The steamed were just ok, and the fried were overcooked and dry. The service was extremely slow.
I got the Nepali soup with shrimp. Good amount of shrimp and veggies in the soup but the broth was very, very bland. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be? Idk.
Alright I'm righting this review mainly because I want the waiters to know the food was amazing!
I'm not sure why the waiters kept checking in on us for wether everything was fine but when we finished our food I was thinking of sharing a desert my group but they were full so I back tracked and got the bill. I think this confused the waiters but don't be!
We had the Momo's which were to die for and the rice and curry plate which was great too and stuffed us to the brim.
We ate at this restaurant with a friend and it was AMAZIIIING the food was tasty, the place outside is cute. Tisha gave us some advice on their menu and was really friendly with you! I will totally come back with friends
This place has the best lamb momos! The filling was juicy and so flavourful. We got the momos fried, but there is a steamed option too. Will definitely be back to try the other traditional dishes.
Delicious and unique food. We had a problem with our order but the manager was very understanding and worked with us to make sure we left as happy customers. Overall good quality good in a quiet restaurant, would come back again.
As some one from the background, I am well aware of what Himalayan food should taste like and let’s say this doesn’t not even come close. The service was OK, but the food was not good at all. The momos were good, apart from that there wasn’t anything good. The daal (lentil soup) has too much water, the papradam was old and not fresh, the creamy chicken was also not great. The worst part -Tibetan butter tea, they served it with spice, kinda like masala tea Indian style. Tibetan tear should not have spice. I asked to add less salt in my tea which they did and gave me a packet of sugar as If I should add the sugar in my salt butter tea. Furthermore, the tea was $4.00. You can’t charge $4 for a cup of tea. I would not go there again.
It's the only place i know that serves Himalayan dishes here in Down town Vancouver. This was my 3rd visit to this restaurant. The first two experience i had were good. This third time though is just average. Food were okay ish if i compare it to other ethnic dishes that serves curries. Let me start with the cocktail drinks we had.they were serve not cold and ice is rapidly melting. Its wasn't the best and could have been improved more. We had the DD and Yogi's. The appies were okay as well. It was tasty but waiter didnt tell us that the two appies we ordered are going to be pretty similar dish. So we ended up eating two appies that are sort of similar. Then for the main dishes, we ordered creamy chicken and spinach Lamb curries. They're not very warm when served. But they are otherwise tasty. I would otherwise opt for regular spicy and not medium spicy as they are not spicy at all. The lintel soup that came with the dish are good and taste refreshing. I finished it in no time. The naan bread however was not the best at all. It arrive partly heated, and when we had our first bite, i knew right then that it was not warmed on grill but it was heated using a microwave because of how tough and chewy it was. I complained and requested it replaced with grilled one. The new naan that arrived were very soft a and palatable compared the first one. Overall the total experience was satisfactory but it could have been rated higher if there were more attention to details on the food served. The interior design of the restaurant could be improved well if the decors were updated and more stylish, hang some mirrors to make the place bigger as there are no windows and make this tiny restaurant feel more claustrophobic.
The chowmein noodles and the momos are probably the best in whole Vancouver. If you like spicy food, just let them know your preference. You won't be disappointed.
Authentic Tibetan and himalayan food combo. Must try chicken chilli and momos aka dumplings. Chicken stir fry noodles was 'THE BEST' Very humble staff ask them for recommendations you wont regret. Great ambience created in vancouver takes you back to tibet and himalayas.
Nice place, we had veg momos and noodles, the taste was so unique, I never had that taste beforehighly recommended, thanks to the host, he was so nice.
Authentic Nepali taste. Smokey flavored noodles, Nepali Chilli chicken, succulent momo and chutneys.all brought back the memories of the time we spent in Sikkim almost 20 years back. Great job guys. All the best.
What amazing authentic food! We had the momos. Steamed and Jhol, chicken chilli and garlic prawns. They were all finger licking good. We eat our food super spicy and they were able to maintain the spiciness and good flavour. We ate the thalis as well. It was so authentic. Their food is made to taste good and not just look good.
The best service of my life! I eat here somewhat frequently, and I ordered the vegan Nepali Bhojan, which is one of my favourite dishes. It was served with a non vegan side accidentally, and when I commented on this, they replaced it, gave me a free dessert and comped my entire meal! Absolutely blown away by this experience. Very good karma to them, and I am recommending it to everyone I know:)
A group of us visited this restaurant on a Friday night, and we were able to get seating without a wait.
Overall, a pretty decent place with some really delicious momos! The owner was really nice and welcoming, but overall service still felt a bit sluggish.
The Good: - The chowmein was really good - and everyone loved it, it had the perfect mix of flavors which took us back to street food in India!
- The momos (we tried streamed and saucy ones) were amazing - and come with 3 different chutneys - each with its own subtle flavour!
The Bad: - The chicken curry was bland and terrible - it took almost 45 mins to arrive, and what we got was a blend of very dry chicken, tomato puree, lots of oil - with absolutely no flavor or salt, and it didn't even match the description on the menu. A very poor and overpriced dish - we didn't even touch after a few spoons.
- Didn't like being charged for extra sauce, especially after adding automatically adding a huge gratuity, you'd expect these things to be complimentary!
- It didn't seem like there was much consideration given to spice requests - people who asked for mild dishes got spicy ones, and spice lovers got flavorless ones.
I grew up eating Momos in Kolkata, the Momos here made me nostalgic of that time. They were delicious. Overall excellent service, will definitely visit again!
Went there for lunch today with 2 friends. We had the place to ourselves since we went around 2 pm. The host and owner Raju knows his stuff, he explained the menu and made a few recommendations which were spot on. We had (a) Steamed momos (b) Fried momos (3) Jackfruit curry & (4) Chowmein. Everything was flavourful. I have never been to Nepal but have after eating at Gurkha got a taste of Nepal in Vancouver. The service was exceptional and friendly. Highly recommend this place. Plan to go again with my family - there are a number of things on the menu I would love to try.
This is second time we came here. Friday around 7: 10pm arrived, they are sooo busy at patio but wasn’t inside. We decided dining in, got seat really quick. We are able to order after ca. 10min.cause they were too busy. After ordering we received drink quick but food was after 35-40min…almost thought that they forgot us…but I guess they were tooooooo busy… food-wise is O. K.but Okra one is just soso…at the end the owner (I guess) said sorry for waiting this long…generally feeling is ok.
I really really want to support this restaurant, but food was beyond bad. I have tasted almost 80 Nepalese restaurants in Canada. Service was quick and good. We got many things. But let’s talk about the Yak momos first. The filling didn’t taste Nepali, there was a offset flavour of Indian spices and yet bland. The momo’s were either freezer burnt, or overcooked and dry from the top. The chutneys that came with it also had no balance and were missing salt. Tomato chutney wasn’t also good in flavour. The momo’s themselves were barely warm then the thali came with the goat, which wasn’t goat but lamb. As a food critic you can tell the difference. It was just spice, lacked the browning of onions which tells you the difference between a cook who actually understands the cuisine. It was a shortcut, tomato purée lamb bhuna. The lamb was dry as a bush. Please notice the picture. The dal was missing salt. The greens were quite good however.
The food tasted overall as if there was no love and flavour in it. You have to spend time tasting food as it goes out, and just like all bad meals I have had at Indian restaurants- this one lacked consistency in every angle. Food was not even closely upto the mark. In covid it’s rough already, with so many similar options around you have to do better for those prices. Even with an expensive rent.
So many vegan options that are clearly labelled. The jhol veg momos were steamed dumplings submerged in a slightly sour tomato sauce. The wrappers on the momos weren't too thick which was great and the filling was tasty. The mixed veg curry was flavourful and had a good amount of veggies. The rice was fluffy and it came with a side of lentil soup which was decent but quite strong on the herbs/spices. The fry tofu was perfectly crispy and had a nice texture. I just wish there was more dipping sauce to go along with it. The tofu was still crispy at the end of the meal, which is pretty amazing.
The female server was super friendly and the portions are decent. My only complaint is that the food took over 40 minutes to arrive and by that time I was pretty hungry.
Went there last year with my fiancé, and was an amazing experience. It really is very weird that this place wasn’t busy at all. Vancouverittes need to explore this one.
We've been here many times and are never disappointed. I love the mix veg and the naan is perfection. The people who work here are a delight. Highly recommend. Try the patio!
Owner was great and service was on point. The Yak momos (dumpling) are a must try. All the food everyone ordered was very good. Highly recommend trying out this Nepalese style food.
I had the vegetarian thali for dinner. I loved how simplistic (most Indian food tends to be so greasy and oily!) and homely the food was. I was blown away by the spinach - so tasty. Recommended!
Went for the momos and can't wait to go back and try out more of the menu. Raj, the owner, is extremely friendly and warm. The momos (in jhol) were delicious! They have a very cute patio off the back and the service was great.
We went to this place by accident and you really can't judge this book by its cover. It has a lovely patio in the back and the food was delicous. The waiter gave us good recommendations (Yak dumplings are great) and the dips were freshly made.
4.5 stars. Have eaten here many times. Interesting food. Dishes from Nepal. Nice flavours. Laid back. Patio out back. Vegan options. I had the potato cauliflower curry with coconut rice add on. Get the appetizer Momos - delicious. Very friendly staff. Parking on the street out front or at Shoppers Drug Mart next door - both are pay parking. Worth going up the 14 steps to the second floor. Get the Eastern mixed drink - rum / soda /mint go for the pitcher option.
Delicious Himalayan food, and the service was near perfect. The patio out back is awesome and when it starts getting dark out, they turn on the string lights and it's a great spot to eat and chat. The jackfruit dish and dumplings are delicious, and it's a unique cuisine that you may not find elsewhere downtown.
This was my first time ever in a restaurant offering Tibetan and Nepalese foods. Restaurants serving these two cuisines are not easy to find. We sat on a terrace in the back which was very cozy. The service was excellent. The waiter took the time to explain to us just what we were ordering, which in my understanding was mostly Nepalese food. For newbies, the menu has items that make it easy to try several things at the same time. It was a good way to get to know several dishes. The taste was pleasant and reminded me of other cuisines of the region.
Delicious food and very friendly service. We had both veggie and chicken momos (dumplings), mustard greens and lamb skewers. Nicely spiced, great portions.
This place is just amazing. We had yak momo and guru momo (Veg). It was just wonderful. Service is good and they have great outside patio. You will not regret choosing this restaurant.
I am living nearby this place and always wondering what is inside. We got the table at patio which has limited seats, so be sure that you come early as we came on Monday dinner, this place is busy too.
The staff and service is great and nice, food is incredible every dishes are amazing and the cocktails also good! I love the Dar (jee) Ling. We order the work (the full set food), the goat curry is nice and lots of care as the goat is super tender and the chicken curry is yummy!
We order the extra nann and it is great as well!
Anyway, this place is going to be my fav and I will definitely come back!
Great great great. Super cool staff, friendly, helpful, personable. Fair prices, authentic food. We spent a good while of time recently in the Himalayas (Not at the Raddison on some Gucci trip) and this is the place to go if you wanna remember getting bowls of thukpa, plates of momos, or some tingmo. Only problem? Its regular price here, not like that $3 feast you bought in the mountains.
Although one must leave Davie Street and climb up steps to enter Gurkha on the second floor of an old house, it is well worth the effort. The service was very friendly and the cuisine delicious and interesting. Our appetizers of yak dumplings and deep fried lentil balls were very tasty, and my Pokhara lamb was tender, interestingly seasoned, and grilled just right. We shall return.
Now I know what all the fuss is about. You would never guess this was a 5 star restaurant from its appearance. The dumplings alone made this an incredible foodie experience. Don't miss out on the the yak! No joke.you will thank me later. Our group shared dishes and anything you order will be good. The more adventurous you are, however, the greater the reward! I'll be back soon!
This is an awesome place, great service, the dishes are delicious, beautifully presented, in the place you eat inside or in the cool patio. I really love it!
Really great food- loved the momos! Excellent service, cute hidden patio. Try the jackfruit dish, it was excellent and sure something you don't encounter on a menu often. Also, very good goat curry, will be back to try more items!
Service is good but I am talking about YaK momo.they put sugar in momo.in my entire life I never tried this kind of worse momo at all.sorry to say these all. I wrote what I experienced.
