Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ

I love it. I don't remember what kind of beef I ate. It's good.
For Japanese, so am I, beef tongue was good volume.

Tried the meat lovers combo for 2 people which was 90$ but came with a lot of food! Really enjoyed it

Got the lunch buffet and it was an awesome deal. Inexpensive and good. It wasn’t so busy on a random Thursday for lunch and the servers were friendly. A small miso soup and a small salad came with the meats.

I'm usually not a fan of barbecue, neither Chinese nor Korean nor Japanese. However, I have to say that I liked the food very much in this restaurant and the preparation was very fresh and tasty. The education is very friendly and accommodating. The ambience is, well, normal, I say. I can really highly recommend this Japanese barbecue restaurant and give it a thumbs up.

My kiddo loves the meat in there and the experience of cooking it on your own. It has a cute atmosphere and the food is delicious.

Food and service was good but all the music was from the early 2000s. No offence but I do not want to listen to 2008 Taylor swift as I eat my delicious bbq. Please change the boomer music and then I will rate 5 stars. Thank you.

Worst Karaage in the entire world.
Carpets are crumpled and are a trip hazard.
Rude Host/waiter/server with unshakeable chimpira demeanor and impersonal approach to customers
Karaage was garbage, not edible, not even one bite.
Meat smelled and lavked body. Could not finish a bite.
Stove was cold and could never reach temperature for yakiniku.
Bowl of mess of rice and meat bits was beyond unappealing.
Left without eating a bite. Server not surprised the least. Bill was $103.00

Sehr schönes Grill Restaurant. Man grillt die Fleisch Stücke direkt am Tisch. Tolles Erlebnis. Service und Personal waren sehr freundlich. Das essen war sehr lecker. Absolut zu empfehlen.

This location somehow always manage to give me the worst experience ever. Avoid here and go to Broadway.

Meat had some pieces that were a bit tough, but the service by Claire at this location was superb! She was very cheerful, energetic and patient. Explained happy hour to us and was very attentive to our water. Wish every waitress was as good as Claire!

This is a great Japanese BBQ. Meats were terrific, great assortment of prime cuts and all the side dishes were home runs too. It's more expensive than the traditional Korean BBQ, but absolutely worth it!

Amazing place, one of the best in town for meat, the variety is very good! I recommend making a reservation as it often gets full.

We love this restaurant. Sitting around a table with friends and family, grilling your own meal and sipping Sake cocktails. Great for large groups or dinner for two. Happy Hour is the best, good savings on menu items. Staff is friendly and very helpful. If your looking for a unique and interactive meal, you cannot go wrong with Gyu-Kaku.

I love this place! You need to try the beef sukiyaki bibimbap, the garlic noodles and also the bistro hanger steak:)

Ohhhhh my goodness it was my first time at a Japanese BBQ. The meat is SO freaking good. We got the combo for two and it was an overwhelming amount of food. We barely finished it all. A must go if you are looking for food that is presented and cooked exactly how you want (you do it yourself!)

What’s better than grilling meats and having a brew. Due to covid reservations are needed for a smooth transition to your table. It’s great place to relax and catch up with friends.

Such a great experience, never been to place where you are meant to cook your own food on the BBQ, but everything works so well. The food is delicious and the spicing on the meats is great it really makes the food taste good after you finishing cooking on the BBQ. Can’t wait to do more experiences with my friends at this place!

The waiters are not the nicest, but they're okay. They might be tired the night we were there.

Amazing food and the service was great too! I took my boyfriend here during a vacation and it was the best food we ate in Vancouver. Every piece of meat I cooked was gone in a flash! The desserts were also great, I got the matcha tiramisu which was more like an ice cream cake. They are very strict here with covid measures, but it did make me feel like I was in a very clean environment. All in all a great experience. Very authentic as well, I lived in Japan before and this was on par with the best yakiniku places there.

As a vaccinated overseas visitor arriving just couple of days ago after passing all the stringent test of being vaccinated, treated negative before and after arrival, this restaurant which I had previously frequented many times insisted that I must have a BC QR code to enter. What’s the point of this QR code, just fit the same of this young manager to scan it to his hearts contend or as proof that I am vaccinated? What if the scanner doesn’t work or no electricity that he can’t scan, close the restaurant? This very very very incredibly talented manager must be the future CEO for this chain to ensure its demise.

Food was amazing, the experience makes you feel like you are in Japan. Great service and friendly staff.

Been eating here for many years already. Tonight was the first time to come back since the pandemic.

I noticed that they switched to electric grill - I guess it’s cleaner, less smoke, safer. But it cooks very slowly.

I mean this place is a super popular restaurant so there’s not much new to say here. My only disappointment tonight was some of marinated meat and veggie were super salty. Everything else was great as usual.

Amazing japense BBQ place which tasty food. Had a blast cooking food with buddies. Beautiful ambiance inside too.

Food was not bad, just ok. Had some karaage and noodles with my friends. Not an exciting place, unfortunately. On top of that, our server had no clue about what beer they serve or what's an old-fashioned when my friend inquired.
I by no means hold anyone responsible for knowing what an old-fashioned is by default, however, it would be good at least to do an extra step and clarify with your guests, like:
"I don't think that we have that. What is an old-fashioned, let me see if we have ingredients and can still make it. " This way your curiosity and engagement with a guest helps the business to sell more and satisfies the guest.
Doesn't take much to ask some extra questions, but nodding or being confused about it when you are a server puts guests in an uncomfortable situation of knowing more than you do and having nothing else to do about it.

everything is over seasoned
Toooo salty, could only taste salty and soy sauce
Couldn’t taste any original meat flavor
Also the shrimps are too salty, too.
Bibimbap is made of soy sauce + a little portion of meat, no egg no veggies.
Kimchi is too sweet too, not real Korean style
Except miso soup which is the best.

The overall meat “quality” is OK
just the sauce and seasoning are poor poooorpppppooooooooorrrrrrrrrrr.

Btw there are 4 pieces sushi which are beef flavor,
the rice are wet which makes sushi soggy
And the wasabi doesn’t suit the beef.

Nice place and decent food.
It is more like Asian food restaurant.
Kimchi, Bibimbab, Kalbi, Chigae, Namuru are the Korean food, while Japanese foods include miso, Kobe beef, beef sushi, takoyaki, and okonomiyaki.
The atmosphere is good and the service is good.

Don't come here if you have a big group. They turned us away because we had more than 6 people when the province has canceled the 6 people max restrictions weeks ago. Also not at all accommodating even when we suggest to sit in seperate tables. Used to love going here would not come back again.

It was the best yakiniku feast I’ve had in a while! The meat was perfect and the portions were generous. Kudos to the staff because they are super friendly. Tip: Make a reservation. I was lucky enough to get a table without a reservation, but the guests after me weren’t!

Soooo yummy! They don't have bacon chips anymore which is a real shame. When I found that out, I almost cried. Granted, I was super hungry but damn, those bacon chips were good.

My new favourite barbecue joint in the city, hands down. Top quality meat, and very fresh produce. We had the Yakiniku combo, which serves four. It was enough food for three hungry people, so I would recommend getting food for 3 if going with 2 hungry people, good for 4 if going with 3 and so on. The service was incredible, the meal begins almost as soon as you sit down, with instruction if needed. The lack of processed food and heavy carbs leaves you feeling full and satisfied, but not groggy or itis-inducing. Such a great restaurant. Very highly recommended

Mediocre service and below the average food quality.

Feels as if the servers don’t care about customer experience.
Can see grease on the floor and the restroom is not clean.
I was not even asked if I were a member.

The dishes we ordered were prepared in their kitchen, which were overcooked.
I always likes the Japanese barbecue restaurant chain, hence the two stars.
Guy-Kaku Downton Vancouver needs a complete overhaul!
I’d rather travel extra time to other locations (e.g. Richmond) than wasting my time and money there.

This place no matter where I go in Canada to eat, I always stop by a Gyu-Kaku!

Obviously during pandemic it’s a bit different but the food and the service is always very nice.

I would say, it was slower than usually to get someone to order your food, I think this is just because of the situation of the COVID, so it wasn’t that big of the deal. Waiters/Waitresses were polite and attentive to what I wanted to order.

I recommend the Long « Gyu » Island if you’re into cocktails or the Samurai (Sake cocktail) ~
The selection of the meat I had, they all were delicious and amazing.

We made reservations which was honoured at the time we arrived. My main thing was that our server kind of disappeared and when we tried to get someone for water or to inquire about our missing items from our menu it took a while. Portion wise we found our usual go to Gyu-Kaku happy hour portions bigger than the all you can eat. We might just stick to going to the Richmond/Broadway locations for their happy hour menu instead.

Everytime I go here im transported back to Japan. Yakiniku was something that I got to eat during celebrations or for diners with friends. Being able to enjoy that food again here in Vancouver makes me very happy. The food is pricey, but for me the combination of food, atmosphere, and memory make it worth while.

The selection of meats on their menu is very good and really has something for everyone. One of the big factors for if you will enjoy this place however is if you get extra satisfaction out of grilling the meat yourself. If so this place is a home run as far as I'm concerned. Drinks were also very good only thing I could really complain about is it is on the pricey side and personally for me if I'm cooking the food myself I don't want to be paying an arm and a leg. Not really a huge issue as some may enjoy the novelty more than me. Definitely will be returning however as it was a nice change of pace and service was very solid.

Great experience! Nice waiters! The amount of food is decent for the price. The meats are really flavourful and the sauces they have for their salads are exquisite. The drinks they have on tab all are really well made too. Definately consider trying this place out.

It’s fun and delicious! The service could be better. They forgot to bring all of our orders and when we ask for dish name they got mad!

Great service overall, the meat was marinated pretty well but the udon dishes they have they have a lot of butter and it becomes over saturated.

Covid-19 measures are fantastic here! Friendly staff and good service. Food was delicious and the menu has many options. I will definitely be returning soon!

This place gets very busy, luckily I booked ahead by a day. We had a party of four people so choose the set menus rather than the a la carte which was more value for money. Our server was very friendly and smiley, he introduced each dish. The meat was tender and juicy and the grill pan was also changed cooking the desserts.

Probably the best you-grill style restaurant in town. Double that with their ridiculously affordable super-happy hour menu and reward app and you have completely unmatched value. Soju/sake cocktails are worth a shot. Go for beef toro, fried chicken, garlic mushrooms and Sapporo. Staff are very friendly and hard working. The space is quite large and well-worn.

I tried seafood here. Salmon and shrimp tasted very delicious due to the special BBQ sauce! You can also go for the vegie items and they are also good

Food was fantastic. Fun and interactive dining experience that my wife, her colleagues and I enjoyed. The service was, at times, exceptional, and at other times, quite difficult.

My wife ordered a drink that she ended up not liking. We aren't difficult about things like this. She tried something, it wasn't to.her taste and she pushed it away. It sat on the table for the next two hours even though it clearly hadn't been touched. She then tried to order a rum and coke. The server struggled with this, bringing her a Coke before telling her that they didn't have what she was asking for. There was clearly a language barrier, which I don't hold against the server, but rather than ask a colleague for help, she fed us a line of falseness.

While we hadn't even finished our food, we were told that we would need to settle our bill and leave. We were warned this might be the case but it was clear that there were a number of empty tables and we still planned to order more.

I would still recommend this place for the experience but they could take some cues on their service.

I had a very tasty meal and enjoyed the self-cooking. However the place could use better ventilation especially at the large group tables where there's lots of cooking and lots of smoke.

Its a very busy place but nice atmosphere enjoyed our food our servers are very nice and friendly they always ask us if we need anything else and they serve our food on time graet food great price

Almost ended up ordering too much food but I have to say it was the tastiest pain I've ever felt. The whole idea of grilling the meat yourself at the table may seem strange/intimidating at first, but it is worth it. You very quickly get into a rhythm and before you know it, you're eating some of the best food there is.

Great service, food is amazing, and the experience is worth it. There are some tables that are well separated by big dividers giving you and your friends a good feeling of privacy. Just make sure you don't tip too little.

Really expensive but really delicious. We went on a slow Wednesday night and had about a 45 min wait, so expect a long wait on busy nights. I highly recommend the beef tongue, pork belly, and the duck!

I prefer the Broadway location, although I havent been there for awhile because its always ridiculously busy. Gyu kaku DT has a claustrophobic feel, windows are dewy which leads me to believe the ventilation isn't the best, especially in the room we were seated in, we all felt uncomfortable. Aside from that the service was really good, we had an attentive and smiley waiter which lightend up the mood. The happy hour option wasnt as good as Broadways unless they've all updated thier menu since I've visted last, none the less the bill for 5 was actually decent which surprised as considering how much we ordered, their point system so soo good I would recommend everyone that visits Gyu kaku regularly or even semi regularly download their app for the points.

Authentic Japanese BBQ. Friendly and attentive staff. I’d give him 5 stars! It might be better than ones in Japan. Everything was great except for white rice. I’m picky about it though. It’s such a nice place to dine with your friends, family or colleagues.

I am writing these review because I was talking with my friends the other day about my experience, and I think I would like to share my thoughts to more people. I went to this restaurant in 2018, I remember it was during the NBA final season between Warriors and Cavaliers, I wanted to stay in the restaurant for a little bit longer to finish the game, however, my friend reminded me that they have the 2 hour rule, meaning that you have finished your dinner and pay in 2 hours. Then I noticed that the waitress who was serving us kept coming to our desk and asking if we want to order more food, 2-3 times, they helped our dishes before we finished our main courses, I realized it was the time to leave. We ask for the bill, then the waitress was standing in between me and the bar television, block my vision to the TV, I have to lend on to the table in order to create an angle so I can continue watching the game, it was a pronounced signal from me that I don't like the place she was standing, (not because I don't want to look at her, but because I found her behavior was, a little bit lack social polish). Somehow she chose to stand there.anyway, we were about to leave the restaurant, I was happy about the food, not so happy about the serves, I gave 10 percent for the tips, normally I would give 15-20. Then I notice that she was complaining to another waiter, and constantly peeking me and my friend with a very sassy face. I guess she was not happy because we stay for a little bit longer, around 1 hour and 45 minus, and I didn't paid her well for tips, but It does not change the fact that the way they work, are not very polite, or even a little audacious, gauche, and supercilious uncivilized. This is the first time I am writing a review for a restaurant, I am sorry if you are looking for food review or if I am a little be too sensitive. However, it is the first time I am having this issue in a restaurant, so please allow me to share this information. (Two stars are for the food; because you have to cook most of them in this BBQ restaurant, so only one of them is for the restaurant.)

You can order full courses or individual plates. May be a bit pricey but the quality and quantity is really worth it! They have an app to help you accumulate points, you can have free plates and even $25 off. Great place to celebrate important days. The staff is also really nice.

It was a Saturday night and the place was packed, our wait time was said to be 90 minutes so highly recommend making reservations on a weekend night but it’s possible this may be the wait time any night of the week.

We decided to stay and wait at the bar, any place with a wait like that should be worth the time. We ordered the house cold Sake and some gyoza and Bibimbap with steak. All three had great flavor, not over powering and the portions were enough for two to split.

When our table was finally ready we decided to try the a la carte meats since we already had some appetizers but they had some great combo offers for two people that were reasonably priced. Since we had to wait it was happy hour by the time we sat down (9: 30pm) and a lot of menu items were marked down. We ordered some beef, spicy pork, garlic shrimp and the Kobe ribeye. Everything was seasoned to perfection, the meats were high quality with great marveling and the flavors were amazing.

The staff were all friendly and accommodating. It was a very busy night and aside from the wait for the table, everything came out in a timely manner and we didn’t have to search for our server when we needed something.

Couldn’t recommend enough

Always an enjoyable time at this place. The people there are always happy and feel welcome. In addition, the food is awesome and my kids live going there to "cook" their own food. Use the app and it's even better when you can redeem points.
