If you're thinking about stopping in here to buy something, don't bother. Yes, it is a cool little hobby shop and the staff is very welcoming. However, that is all completely overshadowed by the ridiculous prices. Everything in this store is 50%+ more expensive than prices for the same exact product in most other stores, retail or online. Some products are even double the price.

There's a fine line between trying to keep the business afloat and ripping people off. Unfortunately, these guys are doing the latter. This store's prices are so high they are doing more harm than good. Maybe they would have a larger and more frequent clientele if their prices were more reasonable. They need to learn that higher margins don't necessarily result in higher revenue.

It's a shame because I like supporting the local comic shop, but I won't be back here.

Seems like a great comic book store but the staff might be a bit too chill or laid back. I brought my kids here to check out the place and they loved every section of it. They wanted to buy everything. While browsing I dont think that anyone even acknowledged that we were there. It felt as if maybe we weren't welcome or maybe they dont like kids. There was no hello when we walked in and no thank you after our purchase. I read a reply of another review saying that most of their customers like to be left alone but then I see a bunch of reviews stating exactly how my visit went so I would argue that most customers like being acknowledged and that asking if someone needs help in a store is pretty customary.

I will still probably be back since I am in the area pretty often and my kids like comics so ill update my review if the hospitality changes at all. People that own or work in comic book stores generally like to express their love for the craft. It felt like I was walking into a big box store where no one liked their job. I hope I dont have that same feeling next time.

My go-to comic shop. Simon and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Great selection of back issues and new releases. Also has a large area for table top games and miniatures.

This is a great place with an amazing staff that makes you feel very welcomed. I try to visit as often as possible. Recently, while visiting with my kids, both of them walked out with items that they were looking for. Solid selection of back issues as well as current. Tons of figures, cards, merchandise, etc to choose from for all the collectors out there. Check this place out for yourself and you will not be disappointed.

It's rare to find a gem in the wall, especially for comics and board games. Hourglass is just that. Simon, the owner, goes out of his way to make his customers feel welcomed and taken care of. The shop has been here for over 10 years and he has really poured his heart and soul into this shop. It shows with the amount of professionalism, expertise and knowledge Simon has.
If you're in Port moody and you have a craving for board games or comic books at a good price. Look no further - hourglass can satisfy that itch! If your looking for magic product, Sean is very knowledgeable and pleasant! Although the amount of product for magic has gone down, it hasn't stopped me from coming here.
Thanks Simon and Sean, for being a pillar of the nerd community in Port moody!

Great staff that are super helpful when I ask questions. If they don't have it they'll check their suppliers and give you a quote. Lots of comic book and board game selection. Table in the back for trying games and a bathroom that has always been clean when my sons needed it.

Great selection for a small store, owner is friendly and easy to talk to and knowledgeable. If he doesn't have it he'll order it for you. Keeps up to date on launches and back orders well. We always go here first. (We don't buy comics just board games)

Not crowded, had all the paints I needed and the wall of minis was fully stocked. Felt like a kid in a candy store.

Great selection of comics for a small store. Staff is a little introverted, but power to the fellow introverts! I was able to get Previews magazine to read for free the first time in 25 or so years. 9/10 will shop again.

Do not sell your comic books at this store! I had a bunch of really old comics that were highly sought after and fairly collectable. My friend suggested I take them here to sell them. I met with the owner who gave all my comics a look and decided he was going to purchase some of them. When we discussed prices he essentially started going by "blue book value" for each comic book. Which on one had seems logical, but what I didn't know and what I recently found out from another comic book shop was that I could have gotten way more for the books since they were part of 2 complete sets of a popular series which apparently increases the value since you have the full series as opposed to one or two of the books from a series. Long story short, he essentially should have offered me way more, took advantage of my lack of knowledge and used a method that shady comic book dealers would use to profit heavily from their purchases. He screwed me out of money so I'm hoping this post screws him back where we break even at our losses. To be clear he gave me less than half the value for mint condition books and kept them as part of his personal collection. Also, the guy had a bad attitude which should have been the first red flag to not sell to him. Do not sell your comic books here. Support comic book stores that care about their customers instead of supporting those that take advantage of others.

A real neighbourhood store with a long history. Tons of comics, collected graphic novels, RPGs, figs, tabletop games, and other collectibles.

Always has the latest and up to date stuff for Dungeons and Dragons and is willing to bring in anything you need, lots of choices for board games and the staff is very knowledgeable about all of the products.
Their comic book selection is also massive.

Love this comic store. Staff super friendly. Clean store and comics for all ages and genders at reasonable prices. Check it out and bring back some childhood memories.

Perfect, vintage comic book store. I didn't think these existed anymore, especially in such an untouched, authentic way. Staff was very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly without being intrusive.

They don't say thank you which makes the transaction kind of awkward. I'm anticipating some sarcastic thank you's now lol

Great selection! Felt a little watched but I think that is kinda usual for the business. Great selection of new comics released! With a well updated list on their website.

This is a local comic book icon! They've been a fixture in Port Moody for a long time and have continued to keep on top of all the latest games and comics.
There's also a fair amount of tabletop games that run out of here too!

Great selection of old and new. Nice mix of board games with some RPGs mixed in. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Gave this comic noon some helpful tips for where to start.

A "good" comic shop and Nerd dungeon. Clean, Quiet, Responsive, helpful, fair prices. More importantly: they let you browse free without harrassing you all over the place to buy stuff you don't even know about. Tons of comics, well organized by brand/alphabet/character/arch. Huge wall with currents (this week's comics), this makes it easy to browse on fresh stuff. They have a cool $1 or $2 section for kids. Half the store is for roleplay games/card games/and other "nerding" activities. I don't know much about those, but there is always someone talking which dwarf armor will defeat which mystical enchanted flute, nice ppl.though.

Good selection of comics. Really liked how they had a wall of their Trade Paper Back titles organized by artists, so if you're really into a particular artist, it makes it easy to explore other books they've been involved in. I also liked how their TPBs were not wrapped on plastic so you could thumb through and see its what you were wanting or expecting before shelling out. Decent stock of back issues. Not too much in terms of comic related toys and collectibles. Would have liked more helpful and/or welcoming service. Games seemed to be priced a bit on the higher side.

I always like popping into the place, the employees give you healthy space and they’re starting to get a lot of miniatures if you’re into that stuff.
29 March 2019 23:29
Big collection of comics as well as magic and board games. They also host events like dungeons and dragons as well as magic the gathering events.
13 February 2019 10:25
Loads of comics and games available. The owners also know their stuff and keep informed on new content! Play methods! And loads more. They also host DnD

I have had the unique opportunity to travel across Canada and visiting many comic books stores in various cities. I came from Ontario just to visit this store. Three key components to a successful store.affordable pricing, availability of product and customer service. I love supporting the stores that give above standard customer service which will reflect through my purchasing. In this case, I was ready to spend over $1000 but only spent $150 due to the fact the owner was standoffish, non engaging to the point of being borderline rude. Remember comic stores represent less that one per cent of the retail industry. You already have to battle big box stores etc. So do note at this point, customer service is key. It will be the difference between $150 spent rather than receiving $1000 in product.

Based on a single visit I was a bit disappointed. There is a large collection of comics here that takes up most of the floor space and that might be interesting at some point. There are a variety of figures etc, but fairly ad hoc feeling and rarely in what I would think of full or even significant sets. That is fine, it is a small shop so can't have everything.

Why I rated this place relatively low was the dismissive nature of the staff. Came in with my son looking for some Pokemon stuff because the website mentioned Pokemon in the gallery photos. Couldn't find anything immediately and asked the front desk person. Guess she was new, so she asked a fellow who was busily painting a board game figuring. He kind of grunted "there" and pointed to three packs of playable decks and a small number of expansion packs (maybe 4 types of 10-card packs, total maybe 10 or 12 packs.

A couple of days later I went to Mind Games in Coquitlam centre and the vibe was completely different. A big table of people were playing some game and the staff member was guiding them through it. I asked another staff member about the Pokemon stuff and he enthusiastically walked me through their selection and gave us some guidance on how to go about building our decks, collecting, etc. We walked out with more knowledge and bought more stuff than we would have otherwise.

I'd like to see Hourglass be successful as a local business. I hope they are, but I think if they adjusted to modern customer service standards they'd be in a better position to thrive in the long run.

I plan to go back and see if this was just a bad day for them and will update if the experience is better.
