John 3:16 Malaysian Delights

Ordered takeout tonight. I’m amazed how authentic it is! So good, so yummy and so excited! Really good job. I been to Malaysia so many times in my life and I can tell you this is excellent food.

Beef rendang: The curry has a strong lemongrass flavor. The beef is lean but very soft. Although the curry is wrapped in beef, it is heavy but not greasy. It will be salty when eaten alone. It is a great combination of sweet and salty when eaten with pancakes.
Roti: It’s just a normal hand pancake when eaten alone. The dipping sauce is very thin and tasteless. It’s a bit expensive for two pancakes.
? Char Koay Teow: The Malay stir-fried beef river is not as delicious as xhs said, and it is a little less spicy than beef river.

This is more of a safety warning than a restaurant review (food was tasty, would eat again but maybe at the Richmond location.) There is a SCAMMER that stands outside the restaurant regularly (middle-aged Asian lady, was wearing all red winter clothing when I visited in late November) that will make some sort of plea that she's from China, can't order, and just needs a hot meal from this restaurant specifically. According to staff she comes in 20+ times a day trying to scam people for food. During our dinner visit we saw her come in 3 times and the final time she came in just to scream at the staff (swearing, racist insults, the works). Staff are pretty passive about dealing with her and may not make it clear to the other person that they're being scammed-so be warned and vigilant.

My most recent visit to John 316 Malaysian restaurant I found to be less flavourful than in prior visits. The roti canai was very good, but the Assam curry fish wasn't as good as in the past. Likewise the sambal vegetables (green beans, okra & eggplant). There is another location in Richmond which I find consistently good. There's limited parking in the rear & none on Broadway during subway construction.

We went to eat lunch with some friends. We had the roti, chicken sautee, sambal fish, mee goreng and green beans. The roti was super fluffy, the green beans were cooked perfectly and the fish was the best. We loved everything we had.

Food is amazing! Probably the best Malaysian place in the city! Fast, Friendly and Efficient Service! Beef Redang is a must try! Chicken Satay is like candy! But the star of the show for this meal was the green beans!

Delicious and authentic Malaysian food. We got the beef rendang and the meat was soft and flavourful. The char koay teow had a distinct wok taste and came out piping hot. The roti canai was a bit small for the twice piece serving, but good for an appetizer. You can also get drinks like teh tarik (hot and cold) and soy bean with grass jelly. It was very busy when we went even though they reopened at 5 pm on a Saturday so be sure to come early to grab your seat.

Visited John 3: 16 with a friend for lunch and loved the food! Everything we tried was fantastic and fairly priced for the portions we received. The flavours were all spectacular. The service was friendly and efficient.

We really enjoy the service & the food here! We’ve tried many place, a couple of Excellent Malay Restaurants have closed in the past sadly, so we went back to Banana Leaf & what a rip off! Besides expensive, they cheapened using stew beef for the Rendang Beef where John 9: 13 uses Asian Beef Brisket. (tender & much more Supreme… I would add a bit of Fish Saice in their Rendang Beef to even enhance the taste more) at John 3: 13 you definitely got to try their Fluffy ROTI, they’re the Best in Vancouver!

My first time trying and I enjoy it very much. I ordered chicken satay, nasi lemak and roti canai with beef curry to dine in. And ordered BBQ pork ribs, fried chicken (ayam goreng) and an appetizer which i forget the name. All are better than what I expected. I like the flavor here more than when I tried it in Singapore. Will definitely come back and try their other dishes

THE best South East Asian food I’ve ever tried here. Extremely tasty and the affordable price does not mean cheap ingredients or lack of quality

Came here for dinner several times but the last time all 5 of our meals were cold. We should have returned it. The place is also not very warm. Probably that way to make people hungrier and more likely to leave quicker after eating. We will probably returns but definitely will return food that is not hot.

Excellent Malaysian food. Very authentic stuff. They even got the barley drink right. Loved it.

Nice family style restaurant for Malaysian food. The satay is good and so is the roti. Wish we got a second serving. The crispy chicken was the right amount of crispy and not oily at all. I really enjoyed the eggplant, it goes well with rice and noodles. Servers are a bit slow but it’s because we went on a weekend and they were super busy. I recommend making reservations so you don’t arrive disappointed

First time experience was better than expected! Service was attentive and fast.
Roti Cana - The Roti pastry was delicious.
Beef rendang - VERY tender and flavorful. Good portion as well (for two people).
Coconut Rice - was lacking flavor, it could've been better
Flat noodle with meats - Great flavor
Hainanese Chicken - VERY GOOD. It is not traditional yellow Hainanese chicken, they have their own special modification to this dish which is absolute delightful. 100% would recommend and come back.

Since Hawker's Delight has steadily raised prices and dropped quality over the last 10 years, John 3: 16 has become my goto for Malaysian food. I've never been disappointed with anything I've gotten from them, but the mamak mee goreng, chicken satays, char kuey teow, laksa, and kari fish are all top notch.

This was one of the best meals me and my partner have ever had. Infact it’s so good that I’m writing this review while I’m still in the resteraunt. We ordered the Roti Canai (with the Beef Curry), Chicken Satay Sambal Fish with Rice, and the Seafood Kari Laksa. Each dish is unassumingly some of the greatest flavours I’ve ever had. I’m a cook and have been for a while, I love food, but this meal reinvigorated my love for food. It felt like meals I would have had as a child, even though I grew up Canadian in southern Ontario. The curry was warm and the beef melted like it was chocolate cake. The sambal tasted like candy and flaked apart like butter. The meal was warm and you can tell they care about the food they are putting on the plate. This place deserves more attention. If you’re in Vancouver and want a warm amazing meal. Come to this place. I’ll be coming back for sure, and dreaming about it till I do. I am now done my meal and I’ve written this about what I just ate. Im gonna leave now and have a cigarette and walk for a moment. And maybe call my mom and dad and tell them I love them.

A place for those who misses their hometown food. It’s close to 70% to actual Malaysian food in term of taste & material used still better than some another Malaysian restaurants I’ve tried so far.

As a Malaysian, the beef rendang was absolutely bomb. The meat was tender and the gravy was flavorful enough. My boyfriend also enjoyed the prawn noodles. Good service by the waitresses, they were very polite. They even asked us whether our food was spicy enough and gave us more sambal.

Food is always great here! Never left disappointed and my personal favourites are their Teh Tarik (milk tea), Roti Canai, and Ipoh Char Hor Fun. We love to come as a group and eat family-style so that you get a little bit of everything.

Literally my favorite restaurant in Vancouver. Everything is so delicious. The service is great.

Great service. Not an expert on this cuisine but can comment on my order of Roasted Chicken Rice & Kari Laksa plus Roti canari. All very good.

The food was fine. The problem was the experience. We drove in the rain looking forward to a Malaysian meal. They were closed for dine-in due to a private event, which is fine. But no signs at the door or notice on their website. We placed an order for takeout. While we were waiting, we realized we were overcharged by $5. I brought it up when we went to pick up and were told they had “updated” their prices. When I saw the bill taped to the bag, I told them the prices didn’t match their website or the paper menu handed to me to make the order. I also reminded the server she had not mentioned it to me BEFORE I placed the order. Received a half-hearted apology. The entire transaction felt dishonest and communication seems to be shaky at best. Before ordering, I specifically asked what was in one of the noodle dishes. I was told simply that it was cooked in a shrimp sauce with prawns. I asked for modifications based on what I was told, but when we received the dish, there were other ingredients that weren’t mentioned and which I couldn’t eat. I’ve enjoyed the food at the Richmond location, but will not be returning to this restaurant again.

I always go with Nasi lemak with ayam goreng. The fried chicken is to die for. So yummy!

The roti itself is good - it just tastes like croissant - but the sauce is very mild and flavourless. The sauce is the most important part but it tasted like coconut water. Felt like i was just eating double baked croissant but paid way too much for it

Best Malaysian food we had of the 3 restaurants we tried in Vancouver. The Sambal mixed vegetables is an exquisite balance of flavors with enhanced umami. Can’t wait to return when we next visit Vancouver.

An excellent place to try Malaysian cuisine. This is their second outlet after Richmond location. For the meantime (Sept 2021), it's takeout only as renovation is still on-going.

What a delight indeed!

Next day, post 2nd vaccine I was feeling rough and didn’t want to cook. Noodley asian food is my comfort food and I remembered John 3: 16 opened up in Vancouver.

This is the best ROTI CANAI ever. It was flakey but still crispy even after traveling for 15 minutes with a food delivery driver. Standard CHAR KWAY TEOW was also well seasoned, it might be heavy for some but it was perfect for me. The curry sauce was light but the flavour was there and not watery like some.

I don’t eat red meat and noted that in the app, they called to confirm if egg was ok. It was a nice touch that I appreciated. Thanks for helping me confirm I still have my taste buds.

Ordered online and had no issues with the tipping. When you are paying you can adjust the tip.
Picked up the food and it was hot and ready. The packaging has cuts for dishes that would get soggy.
Food was great and will order for takeout again.

A friend recommended John 3: 16 to me a few years back as, I quote, “Hands down the best Malaysian food in Vancouver. ” That stuck with me and I gave it a try a couple year back while in Richmond. It was indeed turned out to be the best Malaysian food I’ve had locally. They recently moved and I decided to grab some pickup so my wife could finally try it out. She immediately fell in love with the rich flavour. If you haven’t tried them already do yourself a favour and go.

Missing Malaysian food so much since I arrived in Vancouver last year. The taste of this Hainese Chicken Rice was excellent! The chicken cooked perfectly and the texture of the rice was flawless!

DO NOT ORDER ONLINE. I used to be a regular before and during pandemic as their food is decent. However, online system requires MANDATORY TIPPING discreetly shown at the end of bill. You are not allowed to adjust or remove it. I am not against tipping but when it's not shown clearly and also forced, that's not right. Besides, tipping for takeouts is not that relevant as the service provided is very minimal. I usually do tip either way for the chef, especially after tasting the food and seeing the presentation after a dine-in situation; however, when it's seemingly hidden like that and also forced with little transparency. I oppose to such trickery. Plenty of other new restaurants in Vancouver to try tbh. I don't recommend ordering from them until they revise their online system.

Overrated! Ordered uber eats for the green beans that was mushy not crunchy, the beef randang was ok, the roti was probably the highlight of this restaurant soft and flakey, but the flat rice noodle was the worse a soggy mess. No "wok hey" whatsoever probably get better at a chinese restaurant for the beans and the flat noodles stir fry. Sadly won't be coming back for the high price point and small portions

Feeling fortunate to have this gem introduced to Fairview’s restaurant lineup. Best laksa In the area for under $15!

I only have take-out from John 3: 16 so far ~ really love their Laksa and beef rendang. They are efficient and respond fast to our orders either by phone or online. We look forward to din here properly when the pandemic is over.

Been a fan of them since North Van days! Lower Mainland has a few Malaysian restaurants but I find myself returning over and over to John 3: 16. The care they take to the flavours, quality and well portioned meals made me a fan. Now they’re even closer to me! I love just about everything there but favs continue to be the ipoh rice noodle dish, wings and also their laksa. Looking forward to dining indoors at the Vancouver location once the city reopens. You can see the crisp of the wings in the picture and how well loaded the toppings are on today’s takeout!

Ordered delivery yesterday - really tasty! We got the malaysian chicken wings & laksa and both were very tasty. The wings had a really nice savoury flavour and was super crispy on the outside. I ordered spicy on the laksa, and i wish it had a bit more of a kick, but it was still decent.

Started loving John 3: 16 ever since the first store opened in North Van. Visited the new Broadway location today and the food is as delicious as always!

Lor bak is soooo good.their nasi goreng is amazing as well; came with fried chicken and the breading is really flavourful.pulut panggang was also really good.i will come back for more.i hope they put kuih on the menu
