Came for the giant cube croissant and felt like a fool because there are so many other standouts here. So glad we came hungry and had an order of the perogys as well. We ordered the dill & potato which happened to be vegan - what a nice surprise! There were samples of a layered honey cake at the cash register which was unbelievable. Yes, the viral croissant was delicious, but this gem of a restaurant has much more to offer! We will return for lunch or dinner to try more delicious Ukranian food! Not to mention the servers were so attentive, friendly and welcoming.

The Lunch Menu Satisfies! How many restos can say that? Who cares as long as you can get over here and treat yourself to a Vancouver experience Food, Love & Peace,
FLICK Putin.
Chocolate Babka are an amazing treat. Worth driving across town for! The staff all seem genuinely happy to be there so the important things are being looked after! Good job! Slava Ukrainie!

Cool Ukrainian bakery.

It’s not everyday they have the cube croissant. I think you can preorder if you are definitely going here to eat it

I ordered a Hungry Tato’s Combo for takeout which cost $20 instead of the online menu price of $16.25. Upon opening it at home I was astounded to see only one cabbage roll, two pyroghis, one small meat roll, a half slice of bread and some sour cream. I had assumed that a hungry tato would require more than that small serving to satisfy. Food was good but vastly overpriced for the amount. I want to support Ukraine but would prefer to do so with donations. I won’t be back.

The piroshki and pirogies taste very similar to how my great-grandma makes them. I love the caramelized onions on the pirogies.

We tried lunch at the New West location with some take outs and also Victoria Drive with Take out.
As a general note the service was excellent and the quantity of the food was also adequate. Some reviews did indicate a poor service and insufficient quantity of food. We disagree with these review.
We had a dine in experience in the New West location at their counter. We were pre-warned that no table existed and they reserved some seats accordingly.
We had the Goulyash soup (we know about the Hungarian goulash as a main!) and it was good. And the soup was hot/warm enough for my taste (contrary to some previous comment).
Our next choices were the Cabbage rolls and the Nalysnyky crêpes. The cabbage rolls were some of the best I have tasted but my knowledge dates back from the time I was living in Winnipeg. We chose the crêpes with chicken and mushroom. The filling was very nice. However the crêpes were too greasy. We bought some take out Nalysnykys from their Victoria place and they look much better and not greasy (we just warmed them up in an electrical oven and they were delicious.)
For dessert we shared a Honey cake and a cottage cheese one.
We liked the honey cake. We had a Russian made honey cake before and it was different, but our understanding is that there are few ways to make it.
The dark chocolate on the cottage cheese cake should be removed or replaced as the dark chocolate overpower the taste of the cottage cheese cake.
The day after we got a Rum Baba from the Victoria restaurant. These babas are huge. They come with a small circle of meringue with a raspberry on top. The taste was similar to a French baba au rum but the taste of the rum is very subtle. Not sure what type of rum was used, but usually the baba uses dark rum (BTW It was funny to see a native French pastry in an Ukrainian bakery!).
We also tasted their Borsch as a take out. I understand that there are many variations of this soup but I would have liked to have potato in it to thicken it. The soup is too light (for me) but tasted good.
Overall a very good experience other that the greasy crêpes (and this can be adjusted by telling them so when you order) and we will go back to a sit in at their Victoria location. Maybe in Gastown when we are around there!

Amazing food and customer service, probably the best customer service I have ever had in this city. Keep up the good work!:)

Amazing place for Ukrainian food. Everything is good. Staff is super friendly and will help you with the choices if you are not familiar with the cusine. Pierogi is highlight for me.
14 April 2023 6:35
Have visited two out of the three locations. Goulash was amazing…ate at the Victoria Drive location and got a tub of soup to go too!

Clean and busy. Wonderful hot chocolate. The smell of fresh bread and baked goods is amazing.

Vancouver's best Ukrainian bakery. They have a great mix of savory and sweet meals & pastries. We order our meal items from their fridge area and heat them up at home for a better deal, shorter wait. But, you can dine it, although that service isn't the fastest. Overall a great place that i visit at least once a month.

Extremely tasty cousine and the most smiling staff in Vancouver. My favorite place in this area
25 July 2022 23:39
Really good mushroom cabbage rolls. Friendly enthusiastic staff. Tip jar for Ukraine relief a nice bonus.

It’s good. The food is good. The staff is friendly. Lots of tables available and lots of goodies to take home and eat at home too. One thing to note is that when I went, the door was open and the pastry case had a couple of flies hanging out on the baked goods, which deterred me from wanting to buy them. I get that flies are hard to control though.

As soon as we walked through the door I found this restaurant/cafe very cozy and authentic!

The first display case your eyes come across is the freshly baked bread, along with the various drinks and coffee you may enjoy!

Kozak also sells homemade Borsch, Goulyash, Cabbage Rolls, and Baked treats to go!

Great place for a quick bite or a cozy sit down meal!

Loved the experience!

The most amazing staff ever. Seriously, I don't usually give reviews like this. Rye bread 9/10 (that is considering you'll never see more than 1/10 outside of Europe). They actually made poppyseed babka on request and didn't even charge extra. Now if somebody could actually make it right like in the old country. 10+/10

So absolutely disgusted. My mother in law who only speaks Russian went to get her usuals there and the staff who would normally speak Russian to her refused to do so. What makes matters worse is when she went to pay, they then refused to let her use her points. We are in Canada - we have absolutely nothing to do with what’s going on between Russia and Ukraine nor do we support it. Not letting her use her points was racist and disrespectful considering we frequent this place often and normally spend a decent amount of money per visit. We won’t be returning.
25 June 2022 3:51
Very special tastes for me. You need to order from the counter and grab a random table by yourself. Water is free pouring style like Macdonald. Generally a great experience except for seeing some tiny flies in the bathroom.

I've been looking for a decent ukrainian/eastern european restaurant for a while, and kozak is exceeded my expectations. Great selection of vegan dishes as a spin on traditional meat variations of the same dishes. However i thought vegan borsch was more of a chili rather than borsch, but it was still was rather good. Cabbage rolls (galubtci), crepes with cottage cheese (Nalysniki) and potato pancakes were great. Service is really good too, i would recommend this place to anyone who would want to try ukrainian food.

Edit 2022: seems like the kitchen closes at 6pm due to lack of staff, so if you want to dine in, arrive before then.
18 June 2022 22:53
Overall, it is very good, delicious and clean restaurant! I recommend the mushroom chicken crepes, it’s my favorite.
18 June 2022 8:19
Picked up a loaf of their Dark Chocolate Babka yesterday, and it was everything I'd hoped and imagined it to be.

For Easter Brunch I used it for French Toast with a Tangy Cream Cheese Topping.
16 June 2022 8:35
I finally got to try this place and it was amazing! I got a almond milk latte, the hungry combo and an apricot dessert. Everyone was very friendly and the food was super tasty! You have to try the cottage cheese crepe! Also I’m a big fan of the apricot dessert I had which was very fresh and crispy:) I can’t wait to come again!
01 June 2022 10:13
Went for some goodies to take home. Street parking. Lots of loaves of bread, although small variety selection. Only a few pastries. No cabbage rolls. No perogies. Lots of borscht. All in all pretty disappointing.
28 May 2022 12:07
Tried the meat borsch, potato and bacon pierogi and the chocolate babka. Everything was so good and some of the proceeds go to the Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid. I will definitely go back to get some more chocolate babka.
23 May 2022 16:45
AMAZING. Stopped in after hearing they had vegan options and was not disappointed. Picked up Vegan cabbage rolls and dark rye bread and it was some of the best food I’ve ever had hands down. Will definitely be back!
23 May 2022 10:04
I’ve been going here as a treat to myself every once in a while for a year now! The staff are always lovely. My personal favourites are their babka, the honey cake, and the Ukrainian latte. Also, everyone should try the chicken soup, it’s comfort in a bowl~ if it comes with a slice of sourdough bread, even better!
22 May 2022 14:00
I went for lunch yesterday. I stood at the counter for a while and NO ONE even asked if i wanted to order. There were 3 people behind the counter joking and laughing it up but not ONE person serving. I gave up and left. This was not the first time this has happened. The quality of food has also gone downhill. The last loaf I got there was hard and inedible. Never again.
21 May 2022 6:32
Came here on a Saturday. We ordered the honey cake and the Napoleon cake both -$ 8.35 a slice. The service was really nice and friendly. The honey cake and Napoleon cake are like nothing else you will get in this city. Both not overly sweet and both very addicting. The Napoleon cake layers were not very crispy but it goes really well with the cream. The honey cake has a very strong honey flavour to it. Not appalling but very strong. The cake itself was really soft. Both slices need to be shared with other people as they are quite large. Would recommend it for others to try.

A few days after Russia invaded Ukraine I saw Kozak's featured on the local news. So I hopped on a bus and got there wth anticipation and a big appetite. Everything was great, the food, the service and the ambiance. Just as important are the different ways you can donate to the people of Ukraine in their time of need. I'll be back soon with a few of my friends so we can try more of the delicious food. Slava Ukraini!
16 May 2022 22:42
Fantastic food. OMG So delicious. We heard about this Ukrainian restaurant on TV shortly after Putin started his brutal attack on Ukraine. We wanted to show our support
16 May 2022 8:31
Great, out door or indoors service, your choice, food here its excellent.
Recently we visited just to celebrate my Birthday with all my favorites at the same time supporting the Ukrainian people in such a times as this.praying for them
10 May 2022 12:42
Love their bakery shop. No one can resist their chocolate bread, croissants and almond croissants. I can have them everyday for breakfast. Absolutely friendly staffs too. May Glory and Peace to Ukraine!
20 April 2022 6:16
Very enjoyable authentic Ukrainian food. We brought home borscht and cabbage rolls. The bakery items are very tempting also. Street parking available.
06 April 2022 3:45
I love this place. The food is really good and the staff are nice. It is a bit pricy in my opinion but its delicious
05 April 2022 1:18
Slightly expensive for small borsch soup that's only fast food quality. French croissant is better than a lot of competition. Not much selection in the shop. Small quiet sitting area with friendly staff.
14 March 2022 17:46
Something is different about this store lately. Food quality has changes, they stopped their reward system. Considering how expensive they’re, I’m questioning if I want to go back there. I have asked if ownership has changed as I do not see the same people behind the counter anymore, but they said it didn’t. ‍️ too bad, I really liked the place.
14 March 2022 14:17
Awesome desserts! Reminds me of my days in Ukraine. They also have a 25% off for first responders this far out into the pandemic-so thank you for that too!
05 March 2022 4:36
The pierogies were not too exciting, however the goulash and bean borscht with the generous helping of sour cream and slab of sourdough were amazing! I'll definitely be coming back for that.
The cabbage rolls weren't bad but I would have preferred the ground pork be browned more thoroughly and the tomato sauce to be less sweet. That could be a regional thing though as I'm used to Hungarian cabbage rolls.

Love the apple strudel here, the pastry is nice and thin! Picked up a few other baked goods to try. I love the packaging: paper bag tied with string, just love the simplicity of it! The server was friendly and asked if it was my first time here, yes it was, and added a sample to my order, sweet! The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, I would definitely come back and have coffee and/or a meal here. Great addition to this mainly Asian neighborhood (I am Asian and love diversity).

Came back for a sit down meal and added some photos.

Our first time here, and we encountered wonderful service and delicious food. Unfortunately my friend and I sat down beside a table with 3 older European men that were mimicking our culture's language and making fun of Chinese culture - while staring at us and looking for a reaction. This was very racist, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I never thought I would have encountered racism in such a diverse neighborhood. Also, I did not want to make a scene for the workers since they were so lovely.
24 December 2021 21:41
Used to order from here all the time, but our last order of goulash and borscht was just awful unfortunately. Was very watery and bland, and even though we ordered the meat version there was barely any meat at all.: (
