I’m sorry to whoever is reading this, because you are probably making one of the hardest decisions of your life about what type of burial and service you would like for your loved one. Nine months ago we had to do so, for my father, who was battling pancreatic cancer and succumb to this monstrous disease.
My family and I had been through anticipatory grief for 11 months prior to his death. So when the time came, my mother was faced with having to choose a funeral home to complete services upon my dad’s death. We had called several funeral homes, in North Vancouver, and the lower mainland, and we were flabbergasted at how unprofessional and rude and inconsiderate. Some of these funeral homes were.
That is until we called Mckenzie funeral homes. They were by far the most professional, compassionate, and well-rounded people we spoke to. Finally on June 28,2022 when my dad passed, my mother had to make the difficult call to the funeral home at roughly 3 am or so, I can’t remember it’s all a blur. That is when Mark Mckenzie came to the North Shore hospice, and met with us! I cannot put into words how compassionate and understanding he was. He felt like a member of the family, not a random strangers that was there to haul my dad away. We are Middle Eastern, so we are very loud and expressive, and not once. Did he make a face or act a certain way to make us feel uncomfortable. And he respected and waited and allowed us to give him permission before he proceeded with his job. I remember I was so distraught I said, please don’t cover his head. I don’t think he’s dead, in my manic episode. And he was completely fine with that and he said whatever makes you happy or comfortable we will do that. During a time of shock and grief, there’s very little that one can remember, but even on the date of the funeral service, Mark was absolutely incredible. He directed the entire service so beautifully, my dad arrived in a beautiful hurst, and as a beautiful, finishing touch, he recited a lovely poem which brought tears to everyone’s eyes.

I hope you read this Mark. Your heartfelt guidance and sincere expressions of sympathy to each of us is genuinely appreciated. The extra measures of assistance you and your staff provided for us all is prized and will not be soon forgotten. I am amazed at your patience with us as we stumbled along, seemingly in a fog, at times. You valued our grief and, without judgement, allowed us to express it in our own ways and on our own schedule. I am forever grateful. Thank you for giving us that pocket of peace, during one of the most tumultuous times of our life. You were truly born for this role. I wish you every success!
