Ryuu Japanese Kitchen (UBC)

If I could give a 0 I would. We ordered a lot but left unfulfilled. Prices were insane. We ordered assorted tempura, thinking like all other restaurants you’d get a bouquet of tempura. We got two shrimps and half an eggplant strand for 7$. We got two boxes and both had maybe four strands of beef on the rice. The salad no dressing and the spicy tuna tasted meh. Usually we fight for each others food, invoking half rights to shared food. This time we fought to not eat it. #notworththestop

Wouldn’t recommend. While the servers were nice, the food was below average. Sushi rolls are incredibly small and our takoyaki was still frozen in the middle.

This unassuming Japanese restaurant serves up super fresh sashimi. Went in for the Tuna (regular, fatty and super fatty), which literally melted in your mouth.
The service is great and staff friendly.
I came here after my friends recommended this place. Worth the trip fr Port Moody.
I would go back.

Why should all the tableware (napkins, bowls, cutlery, water) be taken away when I haven’t finished the last bite?

The rolls were delicious. The bento set was also plentiful. The Japanese shop assistants were working efficiently.

A tad hidden due to the position of the restaurant, and doesn't help that there's construction across the street. However the food is very affordable (given the economy and inflation), and more importantly tasty!

I ordered bento box b with chicken and it has a lot of strange not fresh flavours. First the chicken doesn’t taste like chicken at all. It’s more like bbq pork. Others like cheap fried meat and not fresh broccolis… Sorry that i cannot give 0 star. Very disappointed to the food.

I ordered Bento A and Changed to Salmon, 3 dollars more. Very rude servers. The fried prawn was the worst Fried Prawn tempura I tried so far. Small and cold.not crispy. The Bento portions are small and the price of Bento was kind of pricey. I will definitely NOT come again.

Asked me to pay before being served despite the fact that their signage for patio seating specifies only that it is for “dine-in only. ” Extremely rude and offensive. Will go to other options on campus.

I’ve gotten the bento a few times for takeout, and everything usually tastes really good! One exception is a few months ago, when the shrimp tempura was still frozen inside and wasn’t cooked through, same with the potato croquette. The chicken also seemed to have gone bad and was sour… However, hopefully that was a fluke as I really enjoy the bento here.

Feel not welcome from the owner of this restaurant. She commanded me to put me water bottle under the table even there is nothing in the bottle. According to her restaurant’s “ law” these is no outside beverages！ then I said I will choose other restaurants. She responded great!

Not offer many options but good enough for a simple, quick eat. The foods are tasty. Price is reasonable. The service is good.

Good bye Ryuu. Here comes another bad comment from a never returning customer. I genuinely wish your people are as good as the food they make/bring. But sending a customer outside to wait for her friends in the cold doesn’t sound so much like a covid restriction when your own people are not even wearing a facemask. Thanks for taking into account of not hurting our feelings when you judge us in a language you thought we wouldn’t understand. But unfortunately we did get what you were discussing. Maybe try some other languages next time? Oh wait, I won’t come back.

The tofu of miso soup was sour… We talked to the waitress and they change them. When we leave, we heard a chef said really rude word in Japanese. Emmmmmm

Got the bento option with beef. The picture is misleading Re amount of beef but otherwise it is quite tasty. The fried items are nicely done.

Extremely rude staff. Horrible service. I usually don’t write bad reviews but this really gets under my nerve, and I’m referring to some particular server. I went in and asked how long I was expected to wait. The middle aged female server just said ‘please wait outside. Everyone is waiting outside’. It seems that the server doesn’t even understand or speak English. After I got seated, I waited for 10 minutes to get miso soup. Throughout the meal there’s 0 communication. When I paid the bill the server knocked over my mask and didn’t even say a ‘sorry’. How can you serve customers like this and still demand 15% tip? You should be ashamed of yourself. The service used to be good and it’s been deteriorating since the school starts. If you want the tip, you should at least pretend that you want to serve

Simply the best Japanese food restaurant in the area. Price is affordable and does not break your budget. Customer service is awesome as she was patient in waiting for my order. Would definitely share with my friends and will be back.

Slow service. I could see my food inside but the server had me wait 15mins even after confirming my order number and served other people behind me even though I scheduled a time for pickup. I understood when she didn’t allow me to go in since I wasn’t dining in but she could have just taken the food from the counter it only takes 5 seconds. My food was cold when I started eating it which means it has been sitting there for a long time.

New Japanese restaurant at UBC. Food is good and pricing is competitive compare to similar restaurants on campus. Seems to have good COVID-19 safety measure in place.

SO AMAZING! We had been waiting for this place to open and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Outstanding menu of Japanese comfort food, amazing staff, DELICIOUS food and they have outdoor seating. Please give this place a try, you will not regret it. We are now officially regulars!

New food location here at UBC and of course I had to try it out. The restaurant was very clean and had very good COVID 19 precautions set up with electronic little hand sanitizing bottles set up at the entrance and payment counter. The server was nice and very direct. The overall environment while in the environment was very comfortable.

They had quite the variety of food on their menu and at affordable prices considering campus food prices. The menu was large, not overcrowded with menu items, and easy to follow. I ordered Bento Box A with beef (roughly $14) to go. I went at around 3pm on a Sunday, there were a few tables inside and I waited for just over 10 minutes for my food, which was a little longer than I had expected. The packaging for takeout was pretty meticulous with everything being packed nicely in a large brown paper bag. The food was the typical bento box style food but everything was quite tasty. The beef to rice ratio was a bit lacking but the beef had adequate flavor and the added tamago (sweet eg) was a nice bonus. The California rolls were pretty good and the assorted tempura was light and did not leave an oily taste layer in my mouth.

Overall, a pretty good first experience here at this new establishment on campus. I will be back to try one of their curries.

The food was great and the service was excellent! After a long history of bad food and service I had around the UBC area, this was definitely refreshing for sure! Would definitely recommend and definitely going back.
