Shoom Restaurant

This place scams people. I went there one time with a party of friends for a birthday party. Our bill went up to around $1200 and they told us that it was cash only. This place is NOT cash only and we did not know at the time. Never trust a place that will skim the sales taxes that you pay to keep it as tips.

Shoom is one of my favorite restaurants. Quality of takeout is almost the same as dining in.

"Take-out/Delivery" - Decent Chinese food. Prepared with fresh ingredients and quite flavourful.

Came here to celebrate a birthday. My friend requested a room so it wasn't as noisy as sitting in the main dining area. The food was really good! I was excited they got fresh razor clams too! Strongly recommend!

Last weekend, My family had a birthday dinner here, and the lobster set meal for 6 people was $ 338
The meals are delicious and acceptable, but the MSG is too heavy.
The restaurant is crowded and noisy, and there are still customers entering the midnight snack time after 9 o'clock in the evening.
The service staff are good, but obviously understaffed.
The only unbelievable thing~ The bill is completely handwritten, but the lobster set meal becomes $ 388?
Made a mistake in the rush？
Incredible restaurant.
Should the cashier reconfirm that the bill details are correct before collecting money from the customer?

Food delicious and prices are reasonable. Portions are really good. We ordered eight dishes which were good enough for 11 people.

I liked the garlic water spinach and the salted duck eggs crab. But the crab was way pricier than we expected. A 2.75 lbs crab was $90.we would’ve not ordered it if we knew the price. Also the geoduck was too oily we ended up leaving more the a half of geoduck unfinished. However, they had free soup and dessert and both of them were pretty nice. So it bumps up my 3 star rating by one star:)

My family has been coming here for years. The food is very tasty; the servings are large (we always have leftovers to take home) ; and the service is friendly and efficient. There’s always complimentary soup to start and a choice of two desserts at the end.

Amazing dinner special! We loved the unique tea that they served and they also brought out dishes so quickly. Had a private room and washrooms were super clean. Food was all super special and different than the average Chinese restaurant dishes. Loved their menu options.

One of our favorite dishes was the salted egg yolk prawns with the rice cakes. And we love how cute the mango pudding jars were! So delicious and huge proportions.

Recommending to all our family and friends now and we will come back soon!

Leaving a review similar to others, food was tasty. Restaurant is busy, small and packed. Quite noisy when us asians speak at each other at the top of our lungs.

At the end of the meal the bill came, a sign states CASH ONLY. My wife asked if paying by credit card was an option and thr server went crazy by raising her voice and saying we need to speak to her manager becuase she doesnt know. She works there but doeant know if you can pay by cc.

The reason we asked is that some people can pay by cc and some must pay by cash it confusing.

We spoke to the manger and she said yes you can buy its a hassle for them as they need to go next door to use the cc machine.

Imagine if we ordered the $888.00 menu, i dont know abiut you but I dony usualy carry $ 1000 cash on thr daily.

Although the food was good we wont be back again.

Tasty and the portions are generous. Tables however are quite close together so you may feel a little claustrophobic.
2022 update: they have expanded into the adjacent building and it's much more spacious. The food is still equally good and portions are above average.

Gorgeous interior decor (peridot on slate gray), clean spot, EXCELLENT food taste and presentation BUT THEY ARE A CASH ONLY establishment. I had to sprint two blocks to my car to get my wallet cover the bill (ten-member family)!

CHANGE THAT, SHOOM! The amount of money you save on not having an electric payment machine is not worth inconveniences your customer or making yourself a vulnerable target to robbery.

Manager needs to learn how to do her job and run a restaurant. Don't overseat and flip tables if your FOH and BOH staff can't handle it. You can clearly see how stressed they were running around and running food to the wrong tables.
Seated at 6pm and didn't leave till 9pm. Food came slowly and asked the server multiple times for rice and water. Took 2 hours to get a few bowls of plain rice, never received any water. Very unorganized.

Manager expected a tip even though we received no service. Tipping is NOT mandatory in Canada. Do not expect customers who have been waiting hours for their food with no service to tip you. If management wasn't so greedy with money and not fill the restaurant to maximum capacity the foh staff would have been able to focus on their tables = service would improve = tip from customers.

+1 to the chef and the cooks. Food is great if you're not visiting on a busy day or holiday.

Food is mediocre. Took us 2 hours to get 5 dishes. The table before us was seated at 5: 30PM and could not leave until 9PM. Don’t come here if you’re on a time crunch. Literally any other Chinese diner food will be as good

Pretty decent food. Was much better during 2020 Covid Era (and before). Now the place seems like a place for large parties to drink. The menu needs to be updated with photos because it seems like each time I come, each dish has a different name according to the servers.

Subtle signs tell me this restaurant has changed owners and/or chef. We generally order the same dishes, so we have a benchmark for comparison, and the food from the last 2 times were not as good as last year. The different staff present and payment method changes, as well as how busy the restaurant gets are good indicators. Shoom used to be awesome and satisfying every time, now the food has become alright at best.

Best Canto Restaurant I've eaten at in the Lower Mainland. Prices are higher than other places but the portions are huge, they dont skimp on ingredients and they use really good quality stuff

The speed of service at this place is terrible. We had a reservation at 7: 30, arrived on time, and couldn't get in until 8: 00. The food took a very long time to arrive as well, with us having to follow up multiple times. The quality of the food was good, but the speed of service totally ruined our experience.

To add insult, they complained that we didn't tip enough.

This is probably one of my favorite places to come eat, the service is good and the food is amazing. The only real downside is there is always a crazy wait to get in.

Second time here and this time was not good. Plate of veggies were overcooked and was mushy. We came before the table next to us but they got their food first. We ordered the Pekingese duck dish and noticed our portion was much smaller than the other table. We asked and the waitress said the kitchen was cooking both orders at the same time. Why did that make our portion smaller? They were holding a small banquet at the time but I didn't think that should lower the quality or the quantity of the food. As well we ordered a dish of steamed ground pork with salty egg yolk, they cooked us the wrong thing and the meat was rough. Don't think we will return again.

The food's decent, prices are okay for this type of dining. But the service is just terrible. You could spend 3 hours at this place, and 2 of it could just be spent waiting for food.

AMAZING food! Unassuming from the outside, but the inside is a great atmosphere with a fantastic menu and friendly staff. Definitely bring a large group (and a large appetite too!)

Food's always great but service is subpar as usual. We came with a big group and was supposed to get 4 tables but 5 mins before the reservation time they called and said 3 tables should be find right? We had to squish 14/ table. When we ordered food she missed 3 of our dishes and when we asked about it, she said I didn't order it for you because I knew you'd be too full to eat it.

I mean. Are you serious?

Unfortunately I'll probably be back since the food is good.

Amazing Service, Food is exceptional taste
We had Farmachelli noodles which were exceptionally prepared with proportional vegetables
and perfectly Chilled italian wine and mango desert, Wow so tasty

Environmental is very clean and friendly

Will rate 0/5 if I could, I don't usually write reviews, but I'm just greatly upset by the experience I just had at this restaurant. I've been to this restaurant a few times, with groups of 10 or more people before and it usually was a typical experience at a Chinese restaurant. Today I went with my family and my aunt and uncle, a total of 7 people.

The food was alright as per usual and the service was what you would expect, nothing special, not friendly or anything, but they were quick. When we came to pay our bill, we tipped over 10% (calculated over 10% before AND after tax). The waitress (she had the dark red dyed hair in a ponytail) counted the bills in front of my mom and then started YELLING at my mother saying that we tipped less than 10% and she wants more. She yelled at her and said she had to pay more as there wasn't enough on the bill. The bill was ~$170 BEFORE tax and we had already paid $200. My mom was so upset by this and was so intimidated by the waitress that she added another bill. I can't believe the waitress had the audacity to even say such a thing, especially YELL at a customer for tipping over 10% and SAYING SHE DESERVES MORE TIPS, especially for mediocre service.

I absolutely refuse to go back here again for this sort of service. I'm used to rude and quick service and usually don't pay much mind to it but, the fact that they yelled at my mother for more tips - that is something I absolutely something I cannot tolerate.

TL;DR: Basically, if you want to be yelled at by the waitresses for more money.then come here. Otherwise avoid at all costs, there are much better restaurants around Vancouver. Especially without waitresses that wants to rip you off.

Had dinner there with my family for my nephew's birthday last night. When we arrived, there was a lineup outside and inside the restaurant. It was fortunate that I made an online reservation in advance and we were seated at a table in about 15 minutes. The staff was willing to give us a bigger table for the five of us that was available (rather than had we wait longer for a smaller table). The waitress who took our order (and served us during most of our meal there) was very professional, attentive and always smiling. We were very pleased with her service. We ordered five dishes and three of them were exceptional and exceeded expectation (the other two were good too). Based on this experience, I will strongly recommend the following dishes: steamed razor clams with garlic mesh (not cheap but really worthed the money), fried prawns and nian gao in duck egg yolk batter and deep fried spare ribs with chili pepper salt. The restaurant also provided complimentary soup and dessert. We will return again for sure!

Cash only and it's always so busy. Their cooks are top notch. Make sure to try the egg yolk covered shrimp. Their portions are very large to share and you can also order butter chicken from next door.

I used to come here all the time but the quality and the service has gone downhill lately. The food is a bit expensive but back then, the portions were huge so you got your money’s worth.

When I went this week, the first dish took over an hour to come and the waitress did not seem to care. Tables seated after us got their food before us which made no sense. The dishes were incredibly salty and I had to drown the food with water just to take a bite.

I know Asian restaurants are not known for their customer service, but this was by far the worst I’ve ever experienced.

I have recommended many of my friends to this place before but I will definitely tell them about this awful encounter.

This place looks small from outside but it’s large inside. Quite busy and for good reasons. The food was very tasty and portions are big and generous. The owner is very friendly - quick service! They also have a private room also!

All the dishes we tried were excellent, not too greasy and fresh! Give it a try. We’ll be back.

Very good food and cute mango pudding desserts. The only downside was that we had to wait a rather long time (40 or so minutes) to get to it when it got busy and it was difficult to get our requests across and heeded

The food at Shoom is creative as it is delicious. Some dishes even take inspiration from the neighbourhood it’s in. Fraser and 49th has a squarely Indian influence (if the sweets shop next door is any indication), and this is reflected in Shoom’s deep fried tofu with a ton of cumin, coriander, onions as well as fresh cilantro. Other dishes on the other hand, like their wild rice fried rice (basically a scallop & egg white fried rice but with long-grained wild rice instead of the usual), or their massive but juicy salted egg prawns, are just new takes on classic favourites.

Going to Shoom is best experienced as a large group as their servings are huge (although this is reflected in the pricing as well). It’s a little harder but not impossible to come here in groups of 2 or 3.

Best to make reservations in advance as the place fills up very fast. Shoom opens at 5pm but tends to fill up by 5: 30.

Excellent food, good service, price is a bit high but reasonable due to the big portion! Have to try their sweet and sour pork and Golden.and racer clam its highly recommend. Service is good and owner Sharon is very friendly and helpful.

We come here often as the quality of the food is great. The owner is friendly and always helping out the staff. The price is reasonable for the portion size of the dishes. Only one drawback is it’s cash only. Remember to make reservations as the place is always busy and packed.
