Uma Sushi

Went on a weekend afternoon and most of the seats were full. The place cleared relatively quickly and there was bar seating available. The menu is accessible via QR code, but physical menus can be provided upon request.

There is a fair amount of variety for each type of food they serve, donburi, appetizers, nigiri and sashimi, combos, and rolls. There are also daily specials on a chalkboard near the front door. The sashimi don, tamanagi roll, and salmon and avocado roll were delivered promptly upon ordering and the presentation was clean and simple.

The sashimi was recently fresh and the texture of each piece was great. The rolls had a fair amount of fish inside and held together when picked up and dipped in soy sauce.

We stayed for about 45 minutes and the staff did not rush anybody out. Would recommend for a casual meal of good quality.

We wanted to eat at an authentic Japanese restaurant, and were hoping to try one that we hadn't already tried before. After a bit of searching on Google, my husband chose Uma Sushi. It's a small and quiet restaurant, only about half a block away from the busyness of Cambie St. With a 4.5 star rating on Google, it sounded like a very promising restaurant so we were very much looking forward to this meal.

Ingredients were fresh and everything was nicely prepared; however, given the high ratings this place has received, we were honestly a bit disappointed with this place. While we couldn't really find fault with the food, we just weren't blown away by it either.

Their sushi donuts were visually stunning but when it came to eating them, they tasted quite ordinary and handling them was a bit of a challenge. Just my own personal opinion: Perhaps air frying them into Yaki sushi donuts might have made them easier to handle and given them a bit more flavor as well?

Aburi Sushi was good but we felt that we'd actually had better Aburi elsewhere, at restaurants with lower ratings.

Delightful spot for sushi and Japanese food. I got a seat for one right away at the counter spot. I ordered an assorted chirashi donburi ($18) and it was a great lunch meal. Fish tasted fresh and the rice was cooked perfectly. I enjoyed the salmon, tuna, octopus, tamago and inari.

The Chirashi (sashimi rice bowl) and the Snow White roll were delicious and fresh. Parking is a little difficult to find, and if you find a spot, it is expensive, like $6-$8 per hour.

Edit to add: 1 year later and still 10/10.

Don't trust photos on the menu, you will get 1/5th of ikura shown and sashimi are cut extrely thin in Donburi. Basically you are buying overpriced rice with unfilling decorations. Need to spend at least $50 to get full. But hey, fine dining in a city of millionaires.

Had a lovely dinner with my sister at Uma Sushi today. She ordered the Himawari donburi with extra cured egg yolk and miso soup, while I had the Shiromi Donburi with extra miso soup.

The donburi was excellent. The fish was very fresh and tasty, you can also feel the sweetness and the texture from the slices. The portion was also great for me.

We also ordered a small plate of Tako Wasabi for appetizer. I highly recommend this dish if you're a fan of raw octopus and wasabi. Uma Sushi's Tako Wasabi was hands down the best I've had in Vancouver so far.

Overall, food was excellent, reasonable price, and the great service.

We're definitely coming back soon!

Went here for lunch today with work colleagues. Wow! So delish and reasonably priced - $13 veg platter was enough for lunch today and tomorrow! Very accommodating with our dietary needs and substitutions. Will be coming back!

First time dining here and it was a treat! I had the tuna tataki, chopped scallop nigiri and miso soup.
Everything was fresh, well presented and delicious.
Definitely a place to come and enjoy fresh fish. I highly recommend.

Some of the freshest, well handled sushi I’ve had! All of their nigiri was fantastic. They have a really good fresh board of sushi and sashimi I hadn’t seen at other places. Very friendly staff. Check it out!

I ordered the deluxe chirashi bowl ($24) and felt it was small and not the best cuts of fish. I expect more than a piece of ebi/shrimp and 2 pieces of tamago/egg, and thin slices of fish. There’s definitely better places for chirashi in the city with better value and cuts of fish.

Another turn-off about the restaurant was they denied use of their washroom to a paramedic on duty. A paramedic came in during a non-busy time and politely ask if they could use the washroom. The server said no and asked him to leave the restaurant if he wasn’t going to order anything. Just goes to show how their service is unkind to even healthcare workers.

This place has fallen sharply off. Food has gone downhill and service dramatically slower.

It used to be a top (value) authentic sushi spot for me in Vancouver.

Their donburi bowls are the best I’ve had. A good variety and the sashimi was SUPER FRESH!

The team was very sweet. Since it was the end of the night, they gave us miso soup on the house.

The waitress was incredibly sweet and caring.

Will be back to try all the donburi!

Excellent food and presentation. Service was undeniably wonderful. Only thing to improve is indoor air quality. Ventilation is weak and oils burnt twice during dinner. Our food was far from burnt.

The service is what stood out to me while eating here. The food itself was beautifully prepared and tasted just wonderful.

Sushi is absolutely delicious, especially that Salmon Oshi Roll oh my. Staff are also delightful, nice place too. Fully recommend!

By far the worst sushi I’ve ever had. There was a little metal thingy in my sushi. I was very disappointed because the reviews were so good.the sushi tasted watery and didn’t have much taste in it - very small too.

Great quality for the price, serving very fresh nigiri and donburi! Service is great and the overall experience is superb!

I saw so many good reviews about this sushi place, therefore I go and try.

The signature dish is sushi donut which is so creative, of course the taste is so delicious with aburi chopped scallop on top of sushi rice.

The Kaisen Donburi (Seafood rice bowl) which is fresh and yummy, I love it so much. They have selected the daily seafood to make it unique, no regards.

Service is also no complaints, I really enjoy this kind of small cozy restaurant. I will be back to try their sushi sooner or later.

The second time I come again is a week later. This time I order a Tuna Tataki which is well balance with their ponzu sauce, and the Himawari Donburi which is fresh and tasty but the chef forget to put the amaebi on the rice, the service is still fantastic.

Finally, I come for their sushi, I order a deluxe sushi and some side sushi, I mention to the waitress about the Himawari without the amaebi, and she just give me back the amaebi sushi for compensation.

The sushi is very tidy and tiny which is good for one bite size.

The special sushi that I ordered is Foie Gras Nigiri, the texture which is perfect with a touch of blowtorch, bring out the taste so much.

The Hokkaido Uni Nigiri is so sweet and blend into your mouth completely. The price of these 2 pieces sushi is almost $20.00 but is worth of what you get.

Highly recommend even though the cost is higher than the others. The waitress is always smiling even with the mask on.

Great little Japanese restaurant near the Fairview Slopes area. We came here for lunch. I ordered the Assorted Chirashi Donburi and she ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Donburi w/egg. Both were very good and very fresh. Also ordered the Foie Gras nigiri to end off the meal. That was amazing!
The service was great as well. The only downside is that the restaurant is small with only about 5 tables inside.
We will certainly be back again.

My go-to sushi place in Vancouver. Honestly, since I have been to Uma, I just cant go to any other sushi places. The only drawback is the place is too small and you have to make reservations days ahead if you are going with a group. It may be overpriced for some people but you are paying for good quality and a very different experience. The salmon donut is an amazing choice and I always order the deluxe or Uma special sushi from Combo. I am sure you will love it

Best sushi I’ve had in Vancouver. Will go here every single time we are in town. A notably fresher and better experience than your average sushi spot.

Extremely overpriced. I ordered the Salmon Avo roll and the Salmon looked completely discolored and old tasted that way as well. The rolls were exceptionally small for the price. Unfortunately I will not be coming back here.

Food was pretty good (4stars), but the service was bad last night. The girlfriend (slowest eater) done eating before I was even served. Maybe they forgot my order, but either way, it took forever. The waitress knew we were in a hurry, but didn’t communicate any delays. It wasn’t even particularly busy, but I could see pickup orders were being given priority. Probably better option for takeout, because it’s overrated in terms of a dine-in experience.

This is my new go-to sushi spot. The fish is SO fresh and delicious. The aburi combo and the nigiri combo were both so good, I would get them again. I plan to take all my guests who are visiting me in Vancouver to this spot for MUST TRY sushi. Great prices and great quality. 10/10!

We've been to Japan twice, and we were really happy with our meals here! The rice was well cooked and the fish was very tasty!
It was a relaxed pace to order, get our food and go, but we didn't mind. The staff was kind and respectful.

Wow how did I not know about this place before? ! Such deals for high quality sushi, their chirashi dons were so fresh, full of great variety of seafood and treats.
Also really enjoyed the pressed saba roll, super fresh and really liked the garlic daikon topping.

The sushi here tastes amazing & fresh! I ordered the scallop oshi & spicy sashimi donburi to go, and both were delicious Although I didn’t dine in, the restaurant staff were very sweet and friendly when I picked up my order.

Nice little Japanese-run sushi bar where you can see the chefs at work. It seemed a little understaffed when I visited as there were just 2 sushi chefs and one waitress handling all the orders (as far as I could tell). We had to wait 30-40 minutes for our takeout order but otherwise, the sushi was fresh and tasty!

Sushi here is fantastic, and the customer service is outstanding. We enjoyed our meal and our server was so kind and friendly to us - she even chased us down the street to return a bag we had forgotten! Wish I could give a higher rating!

Wow, honestly the best sushi in town! Always fresh fish, great quality, top notch service and they even have a real wasabi. Everything was delicious, highly recommended!

Absolutely fantastic sushi for unbelievable prices. The uma special sushi platter (pictured here) included extremely fresh and high quality nigiri, including king salmon and blue fin tuna, for only $25.95. We also ordered the kale gomaae, anago, and salmon oshi, which were all excellent as well. Service was very friendly and efficient. Trying this restaurant is a must!

My favourite sushi spot in Vancouver. Food is absolutely DELICIOUS, and super fresh. Reasonably priced for the quality that you get. I've been here numerous times and the staff is always friendly and patient. It is a smaller shop, so make a reservation if you don't want to wait! I would totally recommend it. Their rolls are at the level of Miku if not better and better pricing. My favourites are the tuna tataki roll, Snow White roll and all of their hamachi nigiri!
