Zakkushi on Denman

Great food and good service. A little too smokey if you have kids, but great for izakaya and drinks.

Disgustingly rude servers who are very unprofessional. They try to guilt and shame you into tipping them. What kind of manager thinks its okay to tell their staff to fight customers about why they tipped or didn't tip? They charge a premium price for garbage quality food. Servers do not come to your table unless you flag them down for a few minutes. This all falls on whoever is the manager because it is clear that he/she is prioritizing all the wrong things. Horrible.

Sad to say this but I was disappointed by my meal. Portions were very small and the chicken didn't taste great.

Incredible, absolutely incredible. The variety of flavours, the texture of the meat, the spice level. My new favorite Vancouver gem. The garlic beef and the lamb chops were something else.

Everything is fresh, yummy, and cheap.
Must try every time when I visit Vancouver.
Yellowtail sashimi, beef tongue, shrimp, scallops, and ice cream are tasty.

It has been three days since my meal at Zakkushi, and I still dream about the experience. The food was impeccable and reasonably priced. The environment inside transports one to Japan, and the music is the cherry blossom on top that brings it all together.

My humble recommendation: try one of everything!

Dont order ubereat on zakushi, they pack the food wide open with open bag. Cant tell if food was disturbed. Not saying uber driver disturbed it, but cant tell even if they did. The LEAST thing you can do is staple the bag.

Getting boring. Everything is just keep getting old. However, the taste of the food is still good luckily.

Great smokey, charcoal flavor. Great color and crispy skewers. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. The wait is worthwhile; make sure to check in early!

One of the best yakinuki/izakaya places we've been to outside of Japan. Their selection of yakiniku skewers is extensive and expertly prepared. It really feels like being back in Hokkaido when dining here.

美味しい！！！we made a reservation right at opening on a Saturday night, at 5pm, and got seated right away. This joint is pretty tiny, but you don’t need much space to enjoy delicious skewered meats and izakaya food.

We ordered multiple skewers, multiple sides, and some delicious gyoza that felt like a main dish with its grandeur (teppan gyoza is served on a sizzling plate glazed with teriyaki after deep fry).

My favorite skewer is the mé maki, which is thin sliced pork belly wrapped around garlic scapes, salted and grilled until the pork belly is lightly charred, with a delicious smoke flavor from the fat drilling on charcoal- perfectly tender garlic scapes. Close second would be the sea salt chicken hearts- nothing seats up like a delicious chicken heart- perfect marbling and texture. The only thing that would make it better is dry brining the hearts- salt a day ahead and the moisture balance will allow for a deeper crispness the next day. This may be a tradition, either way what they serve is magnificent and delicious.

The chicken skin sounded delicious, and I would order that next time- I did order the horumon, pork intestine, which wasn’t as crispy as I expected from previous experiences with pork intestine- but it was still delicious, with a texture similar to chewier pork belly. That reminds me- the pork belly skewer is probably tied with second place for my favorite skewer- so crispy and delicious.

Order the jellyfish salad! Taste profile similar to seaweed salad since the sauce is identical- sesame, mirin, soy. Super delicious.

Can’t wait to go back.

Pro tip- if you can’t get into the one on denman, there’s another one further south, I think on main st. Don’t not go!

Also for those who go for the first time, the little cup on the side is the repository for your used skewers! Put them in there, not the pen. I did that.

Love the food here. The only draw back is that we had a 1.5 hour time limit. Make a reservation or you won't get in.

Zakkushi is a yakitori (Japanese BBQ) restaurant. It offers a variety of grilled meats and veggies, in a variety of flavours and textures. It also offers an assortment of other Japanese dishes such as ramen, donburi, and popular appetizers like takoyaki and gyoza.

For one month I have been searching for the best yakitori place in Vancouver, a friend suggested we try Zakkushi. This was a total surprise! Upon entering the establishment, it feels like the izakaya's in Japan! It got me excited they have a vast variety of yakitori available, they also have my favorite drink. Calpico sour! ️ ready your wallet as it is quite expensive but trust me it is all worth it since they cook it the authentic way and if you miss Japan, I suggest you try this place. Btw, make sure you have reservations they are busy always. But you have 2 locations to choose from, Denman st.or Main st.

I had a wonderful time at Zakkushi and will absolutely recommend anyone to check it out and enjoy with no abandon.

My personal recommendations are: Chicken skin skewers, pork wrapped quail egg skewers, ankimo (monkfish liver in sauce- think fois gras), any of their desserts, and any of their housemade cocktails/sodas.

I traveled with an unfortunately large group and we struggled to find a place to eat. Thankfully Zakkushi was more than accommodating and happened to be able to sit us close by to each other.

Delicious and always a fun place for grilled food on sticks and drinks. Wonderful flavours and friendly, attentive service. Reservations a must, and seating time limit adhered to. Luckily there are no shortages of other places to go in the West End should you choose to take the party elsewhere.

Can get pricey but totally worth it. Staff is just amazing, accommodating and attentive. Food taste B O M B!

After a long day at work dealing sh—, it’s THE place to have a beer with a friend and rant it out!
Their Yakitoris are great, chicken skins is a must-order, beef tongues and… and maybe I should keep some to myself in case they ran out. Again.

Great decor, brings back some nice memories from when I lived in Japan. The beef tongue skewers were great, but otherwise I feel like the food was on the expensive side.

Very pricey for what you get, and for my taste the food was just ok. There are better places for cheaper if you want a yakitori fix.

Fantastic skewers and delicious cocktails. The vibe here is great, reminiscent of an actual bustling Japanese Izakaya in late-night Tokyo. Just a bit pricy but the quality of food and service reflects that.

The food was delicious, but I wonder if I should pay that much. I don't think I'll visit the restaurant again. It's too expensive. Especially, sea food is ridiculously expensive. Don't order sea food here. This restaurant seems to be quite overrated.

Excellent food and service. Went there to celebrate a friend's birthday. They made it extra special for our birthday boy by turning off all the lights, playing and singing birthday song, and bringing out the birthday cake with the candles lit. Got everyone at the restaurant hyped up. It was a great experience.

Authentic Japanese run restaurant that always delivers great taste. You won't be disappointed. Price runs a bit steep but worth the experience and the variety of menu.

Friendly staff. This place offer mainly meat of course but they also have vegetarian/vegan options. I loved their eringi mushrooms, as well as the daikon oden. They were tasty. Our server was also very helpful and answered all our questions.

Authentic Japanese cuisine and ambiance. Went there for late night appetizers and drinks. Great selection of true Japanese finger food and sakés. They also have a decent handful of Japanese beer. The service was courteous and nice. Is drop in again of I'm ever hungry in that part of town.

Wonderful food and service. Amazing selection of food (though on the pricey side). Particular highlights include the Wagyu short rib, giant scallop, and garlic prawn. The dessert is also a must try, the matcha parfait and mochi ice cream were delicious.

Service was excellent, but be sure to book a reservation well in advance. Space is limited. You get what you pay for, and this place is premium. Definitely coming back.

The closest thing to my neighborhood yakitori spot in Nakano as you'll get this side of the Pacific. 100% will return.

First time trying this location in Vancouver. Walked in at 5pm with no reservations. We were able to get a table for 5 right away! The skewers are my favorite especially the chicken balls! Kid friendly as my kids were given kids tableware. Will definately come back again. Not picture here: karrage

Loved the two grape flavored drinks we got here. Everything was delicious. Small portions but there is a variety of things you can try! The duck and the takoyaki is a must try. As well as the beef tongues on the skewer. If you're a big eater like me be ready to dish out the money!

Tried this restaurant zakkushi on Calton in Toronto. They have the same menu, same price and same quality! Each skew is made with so much care and attention to details! Really amazing! My favorite today is the spot prawn sashimi. So fresh!

Great for late night snacks (or a meal!). Reasonable priced and delicious and unique flavours. I love how you can see them grill it fresh so near you. Love the atmosphere.

If you love Japanese yakitori, I’d definitely recommend a visit to this specialized skewer shop.

Great hidden spot. A gem on Denman, feels like I'm in the alleyways of Osaka on a hot summer day.

A small but buzzing izakaya.there were barricades between tables to separate diners.

The teppan gyoza was really interesting as it came on the hot plate. The blue fin tuna sashimi was $22 for 6 pieces and was a good portion for 3 of us. Additionally, we ordered the oden set (not pictured), a pitcher of asahi, 2 pints of sapporo, 3 sets of the skewer sets, a LOT more skewers (chicken liver, gizzard, beef tongue, scallops), takowasabi, dorayaki with matcha, mochi with vanilla ice cream. At the end of this we were so full, with the total amounting to almost $190 before tips.must orders: try the skewer set, Scallop skewer is a must order!

This was my first time visit and we spend wonderful time! Amazing food and greatest costumer service!

The service is always top notch, very friendly servers always making sure we have what we needed. Food quality is also very consistent and is always my go to when I have to show guests a good time at a cozy and hip atmosphere

We came here while travelling in Vancouver and were so delighted by the whole experience. Even though in Toronto we also have a Zakkushi restaurant but the experience here was exceptional unlike any other Japanese grill restaurant. From the service to delicious food, and of course, the surprise secret menu and a final special dessert which ended the evening on a high note.
The atmosphere was also great; it was cosy, friendly and gave us a truly warm feeling on a regular Monday evening. Our servers were professional and truly helpful - especially Saori, what a wonderful Japanese girl who made our evening truly special!

The quality of the food is very fresh, the vibe is very enjoyable and the staffs are surprisingly kind too. It’s not too loud nor too quiet. We didn’t expect to fully fill our hunger since it’s an yakitori bar, but it was fulfilling:)

Excellent yakitori. Really tasty beef, especially the Canadian rib-eye with yuzu pepper paste. Great atmosphere, open late, quality electro-swing.
