Captain George's Fish & Chips

Very delicious their Halibut is, last time we ate. I wish I had some now.

A few weeks back, we got there 6: 30ish b4 7 pm (2 others lucked out as well), they had already closed!

If you say you're open till 7pm, ppl are expecting that.

If you dont want to bother, you gotta change your hrs.

You really couldn't pay me to eat at this establishment again. Our server treated us very poorly from the moment my husband, myself and son came in through that door, like we were cutting into her valuable time on her phone behind the counter. She served us water in tiny kids cups after I had asked for ice in it, and both times I asked. I never received. Asking for a refill is like asking the world of her. Understandable if it was a busy location but given there was only ONE other table, I don’t think there’s any excuse at all.

Not only was her service terrible, the plate she served was a little insulting considering the price everything cost. There was maybe enough fries to feed a very young toddler, and the fish did look huge but only to see it was all batter and barely any fish at all. I took one bite and it tasted it was cooked in very old oil that should have been replaced ages ago. I also ordered the Greek salad, but I can’t say it was fresh or appetizing either.

After asking our server if this is typically how the food comes out (really was hoping for redemption in this moment) she said yes, and of course I had to say something about the quality and quantity of the food. Her response was ok and gave me the bill. Which we still paid full price.

If you’re looking for fish and chips I would avoid this place and go else where as theres MUCH better places. Very disappointed and hope the owner can rectify this major concern. Also major word of advice, higher new and FRIENDLY HARD WORKING STAFF. I don’t think anyone wants to pay someone to sit and do nothing on their phone….

I was in Welland and my buddy Tony and we ordered fish and chips.they were ok and small but he told me about this place in Barrie. Fish was bigger and better. I'm coming back! And a better price!

Stopped in after a long drive and the young lady working was so sweet. Best fries I've had in a long long time. The fish was so crispy and soft in the middle. The perfect meal

The fish was very good, the fries were great, large portions.the only thing is you should have homemade tartar sauce, those little packages of tartar sauce aren't that great.

I can’t believe I spent $4.65 for that wee container of coleslaw? Seriously? When you’re paying $20 plus for a piece of fish and fries … Ridiculous

Greasey and overcooked.
Clearly fry their fish and chips together, in defiance of all good sense, ruining the flavour of both.

Purchased a family pac of Halibut and chips and found the fish pieces getting smaller and also the past order fish tasted like cod/haddock not halibut, when I contacted the store they mentioned they changed there supplier of fish, regardless of your supplier the taste is the taste you can tell the difference. Don't try and pass off a cheaper fish for a more expensive price. They were not willing to resolve the issue. Not going back better quality at Danny’s and Halibut house. Customer service and quality here has gone down hill.

Food isn’t the same as it was when we use to go. Halibut tasted off, was chewy and has a light brown colour to it. Called and talked to a younger lady who did say she was sorry, but didn’t do anything about it. She did mention there fish supplier has changed?

This is a really lovely spot clean and spacious with good service. The Server was very nice: She was always checking on us making sure we were OK the food was OK. The food was excellent and arrived at the table in a very timely manner. I will definitely be going there again in the future.

Update, it appears that Captain George has cut two ounces off of the typical portion size. It really changes the value of the meal. Even though it is less it is now a little harder to swallow than when it was bigger portions.

Halibut tastes good but the portion is small and SUPER thin. I ordered 4 pieces of halibut and I feel like its not equivalent to two pieces of any other place in Barrie in size. Keep in mind when you order that one piece will not serve one person and you might enjoy it.

Arrived according to the time stated by the restaurant, and my order was just finished. I ordered four slices of fish and they all tasted good. Next time I take the 400 highway and pass by this restaurant, I will come again. Very convenient to order food on high speed.

Use to come here all the time with our family to dine/takeout at least once a month. Use to be a lively place, fast service, very friendly and affordable prices. With all that being said me and my family won’t be back again. We placed and order and not only did the server forget items in my order “pop/gravy/condiments” but the fish portion sizes where thinly cut/small, dry and had a orange colour to it? Called and spoke to a young lady who told me they got a new cook and manager, and that’s how the fish is now. Wont be back.

First time going here.fish was good size good taste and not greasy staff was friendly and polite

They were much better when they first opened The last time we went the fish was so small and they said it was because they were almost out of fish and said sorry. Tonight we went back to give them another try and they sane thing. 2 orders 1 piece with fries, the other piece with salad. The fish both pieces totalled the size of a piece of bread. It was mostly batter. The fish was paper thin. It cost almost 30 bucks. Complete waste of money. We will never go back.

I was in around the beginning of November. The Fry-guy, Curtis came out to visit me while I was eating. Not only does he have a 10/10 name this guy is a fish frying master. If all of my internal organs were to be replaced entirely with Curtis-fried fish, that would be a happy and peaceful way to go. This guy deserves a pizza, a take home fish and unconditional praise. I will be returning when I visit Barrie in December.

Ordered dinner with Gravy, which was paid for. Upon calling to let them know it was not in the bag, they explained I could come back or be put in book to get free gravy next visit. Not sure how it's free when I already paid for it. Also no utensils in the bag for fish, yet when I asked she explained " I asked if you wanted any condiments". I think she should look up the definition of condiments.
Will never go Back. Be warned.

It is fish and chips (and oil) - ventilation would improve your stay and prevent you from smelling greasy.

Food is delicious and big portions:) I'm not the type of person to go out of my way to get fish n chips because I was spoiled from being in the East coast too long but this is comparable.

Stopped in for lunch while my car was being repaired and was very pleased. Tasty moist fish and large portions. Very nice staff as well.

So my wife orders two halibuts awhile back from this place. Not only did they charge her more, explaining theres a shortage of halibut, but they give her fish half the size. Not to mention cold and hard fries.lost $44 for wasting my time at this place. Overpriced, Garbage.please have some pride and offer a good product especially when your charging that amount. Last time I'll buy from Captain Geroges.

Great food and service, the coleslaw was great and flavourful.

The batter was crispy and fresh too.

Not only was the food way over priced but the wait time was horrible we were told 15 minutes I've been sitting here for 45 minutes past the 15 minute mark I've seen people go in after me and leave with their food I would never recommend this place to anybody you give someone a time to be there to pick up their food you don't make them wait 45 minutes to an hour longer

I ordered 2 halibut and chips. The fish portion was a little on the smaller size, decent amount of fries. The fish and chips were good, fries seemed fresh cut. Service was great, the host/server/cashier was very friendly and nice. The main reason for the 3 stars is price. $32. XX for 2 fish and chips I'd expect a larger portion of fish.

Solid 4 star fish and chips foresure. A little pricey but it is good food. Wish the portion size was a little bigger. Then it would be a five star.

This is a great place to get fish and chips. The food is very good and the service is quite quick especially for take out orders. I would say my only critique is that the price is just a bit high.

Honestly this place hands down the best fish in town.staff is great to have a friendly conversation with.try the scallops!

Great thick fish, great thick fries (when eaten hot), gravy was ADDICTIVE. Unfortunately they were out of Caesar dressing and I ended up with garden salad which I don't eat.
Will go again. Will recommend.

Fantastic food, generous portions, and top notch service. Great fries and best of all, fresh oil. Always quality. The lunch special is my preferred order.

Very good fish’s and chips! We just got back from Vancouver and I was impressed this place was the same level as ocean coast eateries. Well done! Girls at the cash were very nice and friendly too!

Great tasting not too oily, chips are a good portion fried just right. Dont have to pay for tartar sauce like some places in Guelph. A gem in Barrie.

ALMOST ate there. Arrived 20 minutes before close while dining inside was an option. Was told "we're closing soon; take out only. NOT impressed.

Seems like this location knows how to cook battered fish. I don't know what they do, but they do it better than their other locations in Aurora.

Ordered thru skip if I wanted a frozen burger patties I would of made it myself and nothing on it no lettuse tomato ketchup mustard relish and soggie fries first time ordering from there and the last time

Great place.really enjoyed my lunch we were served by Tessa who was very friendly and always smiling and always checking if we need anything.
Our food came on time and fresh along with the salad.
We ordered gravy with the fries and was to really good.

Absolutely fantastic fish n chips! My fiance and I have tried many places in town but this place takes the cake! We have not eaten in house only pick up but was always ready when they said it would be and was tasty as hell fries are great nice gravey and wonderful batter I would definitely recommend!

Went for a drive up north, searched for fish&chips, ended up going there. Place was very clean, and the service was amazing. Our waitress was so kind and knowledgeable 'Tessa'
The fish and chips was so good, everything we ate was very fresh and tasty. Definitely worth it.

Has improved greatly from my last review. Portions were way more acceptable, fish cooked to perfection and fries seemed fresh cut and cooked just right. Excellent alternative for south end of Barrie.

Absolutely outstanding! Amazing food and the service is impeccable! Portion size was exactly what we needed. A big thanks to the staff for gravy! I will be seeing them soon I'm sure!

Deffiantly recommend this place. Food was amazing and good portions. Amazing customer service and they gave me extra tartar sauce just like i asked for free of charge. Will be getting from this place again. Was delivered with doordash and they did a great job too.

Finally got around to this place for the Lunch Special. Its was a good price and big portion. The batter on the Hadock was really nice and different from others. A lot of fish places in that end of town, after trying all several times this is our favorite and a must try!

Amazing service, had the cod massive piece worth the prices, chickens strips were nice and moist on the inside. Would give more stars if possible.

Great place for fish & chips other seafood things available. Prices cheaper before 4pm but well worth the money only open till 8. Parking available

Before I tried Captain George's I read some on line comments and many said the portions were small and overpriced but I tried them anyway.
The portions where anything but small and the prices well in line with other GOOD fish and chip outlets in Toronto and Barrie.
I can honestly say that Captain George's fish and chips are some of the best I have had anywhere.
There staff are friendly and service was fast
I love fish and chips but have never found anywhere in Barrie which could meet my expectations since I move from Toronto. I now have a dependable
source for my F&C fix

The waiter was very pleasant and helpful, fish and chips were brought quickly and very fresh. Great out of the way fish and chips without huge busy crowds. Definitely on my list of restaurants to visit again.

Of the Captain George's franchises. The food at this location is my favourite, The Halibut, Chips and Coleslaw special for 2 is more than enough for for 2 diners. We ordered a side salad also, but didn't need to.

Went on family day and not happy hair in the coleslaw and ordered grilled fish witch tasted like it was boild. They offerd to but the fish back on the grill yuck. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Be ware. As about to leave another customer hade something in there water.

Great lunch special offered Monday to Friday. Haddock fish and chips coleslaw and gravy for under $10 great deal and good food!

I think this is the best fish and chips in barrie. Fresh healthy portion sizes, good real fresh cut fries, housemade tarter and coleslaw. What else could you possibly want in a fish and chip shop.

Expensive, not quite the bang for your buck. For 1 piece halibut and chips you can pay the same amount elsewhere and get 3-5 large pieces of halibut and a basket of chips. (costing the exact same) I'm born English and I can tell you from experience. You get an entire fish and chip meal with the price of $10. Not over $20. The food quality may be good, but portion not so much!
