I’ve been a regular customer here before the land of time, but today I went in and the older lady that is the server yelled at me as I was looking at the menu “can’t I get fricken break to breath” I said sorry I was just looking at the menu not at all rushing to order as I was undecided she apologized and continued to gossip to me about the other staff so I just told her to have that I hope she has a better day and that I will get food from somewhere else I will no longer be ordering from her at all really don’t appreciate the harsh treatment I order from here about 4-5 times a week so just lost a good customer due to unethical customer service and poor behaviour bye bye and so long Hookseys I would give 10 stars down
Update Oct 29,2023: we decided to try it Hooksey’s again a few months ago and continue to do so… they have completely up’d their game. Fish n Chips are excellent, souvlaki is excellent, our son loves the chicken fingers and poutine and the Greek salad is very good. Portions are all generous and the price point is reasonable by current standards. As a local family restaurant it is consistently very good.
Old review: Hadn't had Hooksey's in a few months.it was our go-to for fish n chips since moving to Whitby 13 years ago. I placed our usual order. My wife likes 2 Haddock and a small Greek salad. My son gets Chicken fingers, no fries and a Greek side salad and a Poutine. I get a single Halibut and Chips. I placed the order and went through it 3 times with the gentleman on the phone since it is specific. I picked up the order and when I arrived home there was no Poutine in the bags, a small Greek and large Greek salad when I requested two small salads. The chicken fingers came with fries that we didn't want. I called and informed them that I didn't get the Poutine I ordered so I went back and got it. They provided another salad as a token which I really didn't want since I already had and paid for more than I had ordered. So now that we had what we wanted plus more than we could use we started to eat. My son said the Chicken fingers and Poutine were good. My wife found the Haddock good - she takes all the batter off. My Halibut was smaller than I was accustomed to getting from Hooksey's and the batter was doughy, under cooked and thick in the middle and lacked the usual crispy crusty exterior. It was not the same. The Greek salad was not that good.they used romaine instead of iceberg - a Greek salad no-no. The onions were harsh ta Feta was not crumbled but in large chunks and the dressing was slathered on. My wife, son and I felt it wasn't very appealing. Overall it was a disappointing experience for $85. We weren't satisfied from the order the sent me home with to the overall quality of the food. Now it seems we'll be looking for another Fish n Chips restaurant.
Amazing fish batter, it was very nice and crispy and tasted so fresh! I love this place I come here every Friday just to get the fish and the fish is always perfect. I really recommend this place if you haven’t been here before.
Called ahead on Good Friday for Hallibut and Chips. Glad I called ahead. There was about 15 people in line but they called my name and I didn't have to wait. It was a hectic day for them but they were calm and professional!
Can't give less than a star? They need to figure out their Good Friday system. Not like it doesn't happen every year. I waited over 90 minutes. Got home and NO FRIES! Don't go on Good Friday or any day. I will never go back.
Hooksey’s… our favourite local breakfast/fish and chips joint. If you are not local to the area, it is easily missed but word of mouth reaches far and wide when you are a wholesomely good family spot! My family and I have been coming here for years. We love both the breakfast and the fish and chips! My most recent visit was for breakfast and my usual order is the Full of It sandwich. Other family members usually get eggs, bacon and peameal. The over easy eggs are cooked and plated perfectly. The pancakes (not pictured here) are fluffy and soft with no eggy flavour.
While we came here for breakfast today, we also love the fish and chips. The fish portions have to be the most generous I’ve ever encountered without excessive batter. The gravy is dark and delicious and perfect accompaniment to the chips. Be sure to also try their Greek salad… one of the best greek salads I’ve had. The dressing is creamy and so flavourful along with a generous mound of fresh, soft feta.
This is a family run business and owners are wonderful. We will continue to visit and have told many of our friends and family about this place.
A special thanks to Alex today for making me the best fish and chips ever. Fish was so crispy and cooked to perfection and the store also has a a lot more menu options plus the old classics. Other than the delicious food Alex’s hospitality and kindness stood out, really made me feel at home and comfortable, if I can give this place a 10 star I really would.
Love this place. This was the first time me and my family gone there … I love the fish and fries… Wow, it was really a good choice for fish… I really appreciate the staff for good customer service and I highly recommend this place. There is no doubt that I will be keep returning…
The food is amazing they have really good customer service especially AJ who helped me out, gave me good recommendations and was patient with me. The fish was really soft and cooked to perfection. Will definitely go back.
I came in last week for take out and I knew about this place for a while but I think they got new management and the whole place looks more modern now but still has that diner feel and the food is just less oily and tastes more fresh everything just taste better. Also a big thank you to AJ he gave me extra extra tartar sauce and was very polite and kind just like the rest of the wonderful staff there. I will be back more often the food is absolutely amazing so is the customer service.
This is my go to fish n chips in Whitby! Peter the owner is a top notch dude, works hard to bring you the best! Everything handmade and fresh as you can get!
Take out chips were stale. Halibut fish had an old smell. I dont know if the dine in experience will be different but another place in Whitby I will avoid.

You guys ran out of fish! You didn't answer your phone, so I drove all the way from Courtice to get fish-and-chips and you guys ran out. Could have answered your phone you would have saved me the drive.
Excellent value and very well-sized portions. We went for the haddock and chips with an extra piece of halibut. Delicious! With a side of gravy (yum!) we finished our meals in a flash. The service was awesome. Quickly served with the friendliness we all yearn for. We would have posted photos, but forgot to take them as we were drawn into our meals!
Quite pricey for just one battered fish and rest just fries. Fish was okay, very oily. Underneath the fish was a bed of fries. No lemon wedge. Tartar sauce came in packets, i was expecting homemade atleast for the price. Personally i wont be getting take out from here.
Really don’t understand the reviews to this place. The batter is over cooked on the outside and soft and mushy on the inside. There is so much batter on the fish that it doesn’t cook evenly. Also, they give you so much fish that once you get through the batter it’s just a mouth full of fish. Fish and chips should always be a balance. The chips are over fried and completely tasteless. Coleslaw is very very pungent. Overall it’s a 2/10 for me. I’ve had Duckworths all my life so this is a HUGE step down from that. I probably could’ve made this better at home with no knowledge of how to make it.
Today was the first time for me our waitress Savannah was amzing so happy and friendly and always making sure everything was good You are so lucky to have such friendly staff the cook did an amazing job! I will be back
My wife and her friends rave about Hooksey's breakfast so I wanted to try it. I was not disappointed! The food was fantastic, the service was excellent as well! My coffee was topped up without having to waive down a server. Definitely going to try the fish and chips (they looked amazing) Thank you, Tom
First time for breakfast today amazing service thanks Savannah you were the best server we have had hands down in all the places we have tried. We asked for our home fries on grill and no problem! The cook even came to table as he was concerned we had not ordered! Will be back for sure!
I don't like leaving bad reviews, especially for small businesses and during covid but have to on this occasion. Ordered haddock and chips and it was by far the worse fish I've had in a very long time and had to be thrown away after just two bites. It was either off, and badly off, or it wasn't haddock. I've been having fish and chips for over 30 years so its easy to spot the difference between cod, haddock and halibut. If it was indeed switched, I think that is terrible and unethical practice. My advise is for folk to check what it is they're getting.
Deserves no stars due to selling contaminated food and I eat only sealed food recenty So it was here that sold food with certain inhibitors today other take out I have payed for had deliberate contaminates. Maybe here was just negligence I should check my blood for what caused my current inhibition. Taco bell on thickson recently did the same thing. Durham region seems to hate me. Due to lagging in knowledge and intellegence. Since 5 they tried to keep me down. And own something they have no say in. Keeping me down has already turned the world against Canada. Due to who I am. And the marks on my hand in veins regular people get jealous of French indigenous.
Fish was generous portion and hot. Scallops we small but good. Fries ok. -1 for putting 450f deep fried things in styrofoam take out container which melted and I probably ate. Also, not sure why the napkin was inside the container, but it was of little use by the time I found it. No utensils also. Probably a much better dine in experience so trying not to be too negative.
My family and I have been coming to Hookseys for over a decade. The staff are amazingly friendly and personable, the food is always good, and there is something on the menu for whatever you’re feeling. No matter how busy they get they will always take the time to catch up with you and make sure you’re well taken care of. Thanks guys!
Hookseys offers the absolute BEST fish and chips. Family run business, very clean, friendly and quick service. You will not be disappointed. The fish is a thick piece of halibut, battered perfectly. The chips are homemade not the frozen kind. Would not go anywhere else but here for fish and chips. Try them, you will be HOOKED.
Fish A+ Chips C-. The cook in the back had his mask pulled down, below his nose, the whole time. The cashier touched her mask and face at least 10 times while using the cash register. But the halibut is fantastic!
Best fish and chips in town! The dressing on the Greek salad is amazing and I always get a Greek salad with everything I order from here. Staff are polite and friendly, and food is made pretty quickly, even when they are busy.
We have been looking for a good Fish and Chip place for years in Whitby. Glad we stumbled across Hooksey's. Fast and friendly service. Amazing food. Fair prices. Overall excellent experience!
Every Tuesday around 11 am for the past 3 years or so 3 Buddies and myself go to Hooksey's for breakfast / brunch. The toasted western is my favorite. Extremely tasty. It is the biggest western sandwich I have ever had definitely tasty and well worth the price. The service has been great with a very friendly staff. Their bacon and eggs are also great. This is a great local restaurant and we definitely recommend it.
The food is fantastic and comes out very quickly. The staff is very friendly and hard working. Would recommend this place if your in the mood for some fish and chips or the burger.
I am a long haul truck driver, i called into the place to find out when they closed and was told 7: 30pm. The young lady i spoke to said how long will you be? I said 1hr 20 mins, she asked what would like to order we can wait. I ordered the food picked it up and asked Peter where the nearest truck stop was. There was customs in the restaurant also and they all gave directions and a hand drawen map. I grabbed my food and left, got parked at the dinner/truckstop and just started to eat my food which was fantastic by the way thanks Peter. My phone rang and here it is Peter checking in to see i didnt get lost. Now this is customer service at its finest thank you so much much appreciated, this is a great place for food and great people. Highly recommended to stop in and eat.
Food is great. However when you call. No one answers and amn automated messages comes on telling you their mail box is not set up? This is a business Great food. But dont try to call in a order
